[Q] Looking for apps - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I'm currently looking for an apps that does the following. It connect to the computer via Bluetooth. When you are in range, it unlock your computer. When you are too far (out of reach of bluetooth for exemple), it lock down the computer. I've saw a little gadget that does that, but it would be great to have that on android.
thanks

You don't need an app to do that. Download BTProx on your computer, pair it with your phone's bluetooth, and when you're out of range it will lock down, or for example launch a program that will clean your computer while you're at work or school

I'll try that, thanks.

+1 for BTProx... Works Great!

work nice, thing it'S missing though is to unlock the computer when you are in range. Think you know of a way of doing that?
Thanks

Internet Sharing with a Mac? USB and/or BT

Hello all, I have the xv6800, dcd rom 3.3.4 and activesync and internet sharing setup on Windows just fine. However, I have recently gotten a MAC, and I have not been able to get the internet sharing to work via BT or USB. I can understand BT cause I was never able to get it set up on windows either. I don't mind the USB connection, it's alwasy been more stable and a snap to set up with the ROM. However I can't get it working on the MAC. Is there a driver or app that needs to be installed on the mac side? The only think I remember doing on the WIN side is installing the modem driver.
On Mac, I have installed Missing Sync installed and I have been able to attach and sync my winmo phone without issue, so I know I have connection. but I cannot get the internet sharing to work. I checked out the verizon site and they state that they do not make a modem driver for the mac os.
I should also mention that I have winXP set up on the mac thru VMware, but I have been unsuccessful getting this to work the way my original windows laptop is setup. I dont want to set it up that way anyway if I can avoid it.
I am curious if anyone has this working via USB?? I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I couldn't find anything related and certainly not specific to this ROM.
I did find this, http://www.keithtastic.com/post/3997...-to-sprint-htc, but it states to buy an app called USB Modem program from www.mobile-stream.com. but wouldnt the ISC app on the dcd rom provid the same functionality?
Thanks for any/all help

then just use internet sharing form the phone as normal?
no offense but that didnt help at all. I can connect my phone via BT themac sees it, but all I can do is browse device. I need to set up a connection with my phone to the mac and get online via my phone. I dont careif its bluetooth or not. I have the new macbook btw, if it matters
goon55: Like you, I always used a VM workaround to tether back when I had a Mac. I haven't tried this, but I've heard Syncmate allows Internet Sharing on Mac systems. Good luck!
I have no issues connecting my macbook for my 6800.
After you set it up like the other poster told you to, you should have a phone icon next to the bluetooth icon at the top right of the screen. click the phone icon then "connect bluetooth".

also when setting up the BT relationship, make sure you select the network services (i believe, there are one or two services you can check)...on the phone make sure you start BT and internet sharing (with BT selected) and when you go to the BT menu on the mac, your phone name should be under "devices", expand your phone name and select connect to network.
just trying to clarify a bit.
i had it
i had bt working for a bit and then was disconnected abruptly.
after deleting the profiles of the pairings on both the titan and the mac, it still wont share the connection although the phone will be connected in bt system prefrence pane, (where you select devices).
when it worked, i would select the phone in the device select, and underneath clicking on the gear to a menu option to 'connect to network'
it worked that wayfor 3 mins.
also, when i configure the device, if i set the phone to internet share while the mac is discovering the services, i get two options to select instead of just one:
access the internet
use device as network port.
edit: got it, apple talk active
best software you can use is http://www.wmwifirouter.com/ it works over BT or wifi and uses your phone's regular data access address which means you don't get tethering charges. NOTE I use the free version, and I have tried the tiral and although it does work, my mogul does not seem to like it and has little quirks after I install it (wifi turns on when I reset even if the switch is off, I don't why but its there).
Hi everyone, I've been trying to use my Windows Mobile phone as a modem for the Macbook, but so far I only see people being able to connect via BT. Problem with that for me is that BT drains both my laptop and phone battery quicker, so I'm trying to find a solution to connect via USB instead. Has anyone been able to surf on their Mac using their Windows Mobile phone as a modem via USB cable?
What you want is Mobile Stream USB Modem for Windows. Windows here being Windows Mobile, it works with my Mac.
Once you set it up, your phone is seen as a USB Modem and you dial from the Mac to this port. There is a free trial, take time to test it, read the forums, I had some initial issues to get it work right, but now it is good, I ended up purchasing it.
Tried BT sharing too, but too instable and drops. Tried the WiFi sharing, but eats battery...
Only downside: as you dial the data modem, it will fail if it is already in use (background email checking on your phone...). I have to disconnect the data connection on the phone to be able to dial from the Mac, otherwise it reports Port Busy.
Thanks for the recommendation, will try it out. Any other solutions in the meantime to connect and share the Internet connection from my Windows Mobile phone to Mac via USB?
I had the same problem, and tried everything recommended in the thread - no dice. I ended up just installing WMWifiRouter and that works like a champ.
http://networkjew.com/2009/03/30/tether-windows-mobile-phone-mac/
This is for cingular, but I'm sure this can be attempted no matter what the provider.
I've been looking for a solution as well, and have yet to find one for USB Internet Sharing on a Mac. I currently just use Bluetooth with an external charger on the phone and laptop since it'll eat the battery of both quickly.

Use the computer's connection to internet

Hi!
Is there a way to connect to the internet using my computer's connection via USB?
That is:
Streak>USB>Computer>Internet
I don't want to use too much 3G data and my Wifi isn't strong enough to get a good signal in my room.
Cheers!
Back in my WindowsMobile days you could very easily. You had to install MS Active Sync on your PC, but then you could simply plug in the phone to the PC and have internet access there. I used that at work to run my personal PDA.
I don't know if there is similar for Android, yet. I hope so, as that would make me extremely happy.
That's exactly what happens to me.
My previous phone was a WindowsMobile (rubbish) and I used this feature quite frequently.
I hope I can do it with Android.
By the way, I'm using Ubuntu.

Connecting tablet to a paired phone through BT

I was wanting to try and send a file from my phone to the tablet using blue tooth file transfer. I was able to pair my tablet to my phone through blue tooth but it will not connect once the process is done. On both devices it gave the same message to allow paring and the same identification number. I hit allow pair and it does. After that nothing happens. I hit the settings icon next to the paring and it only gives an option to unpair or rename the cell phone/pair connection.
I'm thinking it is not properly setting up the profile for the connection. When I go into the setting for my headphones it lists the profile and the options for it; voice chat, media, etc. Is this part of the problems people are having with the BT connections? Is there a setting I need to turn on or off somewhere is the OS of the tablet?
I'm using a Mytouch4g slide phone and looked on the phone to see what options are given. Hitting the paired icon for the table only gives the option to delete it. On there my connection to my laptop for blue tooth gives the profile options for transfers etc. When I get home I will try connecting the tablet to my laptop and see if the profile gets created. If it works then it has to be something between my phone and the tablet.
Connecting two complex devices like a phone and a tablet isn't (generally) the same as plugging in a USB device, or plugging a phone into a PC. The two devices will never show up as removable storage or an extra hard drive. They won't even actually be connected most of the time. However if they are paired they will "look" for each other and share files back and forth if you initiate a transfer.
Try sending a file from one device to the other.
In any file explorer, select the file you want to share, select share, select blue tooth and then select the paired device. If the two devices are properly paired you will get a message on the receiving device asking you if you want to accept the file and if you hit OK the file will be sent over the blue tooth connection.
Try the app "bluetooth file transfer" to do it. It's what I had to use to push the file from my phone to tablet through bluetooth.
I have my EVO3D paired and it always says its not connected but paired. When i ask to transfer a file (song, pic, comic, movie, etc...) it pops up to ask if i want to accept it. I press yes and it works.
Sent from my EVO 3D w/ Tapatalk
I uninstalled that bluetooth file transfer app. Its buggy and doesn't seem to work. I just use the normal built in Bluetooth capabilities to transfer files, photos, movies, etc...works great. That one app is crap, IMO.

Must be user error. Took me all of 10 seconds to connect my thunderbolt and prime and start transferring a file.
It is not user error. I was again annoyed today that I couldn't get it work the first time and decided to tinker around again. Still same situation where it will pair and show the same security code on my phone and the tablet, sync/pair up, and that is it. After that it will not connect. It didn't matter if I tried to initiate the the connection from my phone or the tablet. But I did get a message on one attempt saying something to the effect of software preventing a connection.
I decided to try it with a coworkers phone and it was the same situation. It would discover the phone, pair, but not connect. That was another Android device. I then went to another who has an Iphone 3gs and got the same result. Except his phone gave the message saying the tablet is not supported. I'm going to try and include the picture in this post.
I tried a factory reset of the tablet thinking maybe there was something that went bonkers with the patches but that didn't work either. I'm not sure where the problem is. I've connected my phone to multiple bluetooth devices and no problems. I've only gotten the tablet to connect to my bluetooth headphones and that is it.
It would be nice to get the tablet to connect with my phone as I could then use bluetooth gps on it and do file transfers. I've tried the apps for doing such tasks and it won't sync up.

You don't need this app, bluetooth file sharing is built right into the Prime (and most Android devices).
Has anyone tried to use the usb to transfer huge file because to transer 400mb of info through bt would take a million years, I tired today to use the usb with my prime and evo and the tablet did not show me the file when I turned on the storage from the evo .
So right now had to take out the sd card which is anoying just wanted to know if anyone has been able to get this work.
What is strange is that I know the usb works fine since I have used my external harddrive and it works perfect. So I think there is something that has to do with the phone connection that it not tlakng to the tablet.

I had this problem while trying to BT connect my Transformer with my Wileyfox Swift, in order to test the "File-Go" beta App from Google. After many attempts I made some progress by simultaneously pressing pair on both machines. I was then able to share files via Bluetooth, although the "File-Go" App didn't allow BT transfer.

[Q] Z2 connect wireless to transfer data

Hi guys,
since I'm new to Sony Z* I don't actually know, what is the best way to transfer data to my internal/external sd cards?
I would like to not use cables to leave the docks closed.
So Bluetooth or Wifi would be the next options, while Bluetooth might be a bit slow for lage file transfers I guess.
So is there any easy way to transfer data between the Z2 and a pc ofer wifi? The best thing would be, if no third party software on the pc is required.

Try Airdroid, it's the best app AFAIK.
Note that because of a restriction introduced by Kitkat, wireless data transfer can not be done directly to the external SDcard. The Airdroid team is currently working to try to overcome this issue.

If you goto settings, Xperia Connectivity, USB Connectivity, you can pair your device with your computer (the phone will give you instructions), once the phone is paired with your computer you can simply goto the same menu, tap the name for your computer, and you will then be able to transfer files as if you had connected by USB in Media Transfer Mode all over wifi.

Thanks for mentioning. This will work great at my home I guess, but not at my office pc which is connected to a different wifi network.
I would have to open a Wifi Hotspot on my Z2 and let the PC connect to it to make it still work.

I don't think it matters which network you join, since the pairing is based on the MAC address on each device (An example would be you could still pair with your home computer even if your computer was connected to a different network) unless you're not allowed to have your phone connect to your work's wifi?

This has happened to me too but usually happens if the phone has gone to sleep after it has been connected already, I also think stamina mode blocks the connection while the phone is in sleep. Try turning the wifi off (remember to disconnect from the PC first) and back on and then reconnect but ensure the screen stays on/phone stays awake, once you've done your tasks disconnect from the pc, otherwise it'll eventually as I like to say "forget it's connected while still reporting it is connected".
If it's still not working, try re-pairing and after repeating the above tasks and it's still not working, check your router configuration and/or your pc's network connection settings including any firewalls.
Thats about the best information I can offer really so if it doesn't work after all that I'm not sure what else that can be done.

Yes, still working
But I prefer using Airdroid, it's much faster.
how to maximise transfer speed?
a question for networking gurus - i am currently on a 1 Gbps line. No doubt, international speeds will never reach that. However, tests to a local server do indicate that i can obtain around 400+ Mbps = around 50 MB/s (a very rough calculation, but for convenience let's just go with it)
However, i tried transferring a 1.5gb file using the xperia z2's wireless usb function, which indicated that around 17 minutes would be needed. that works out to only about 1.4 MB/s. If even a test connection through the internet can reach 50MB/s, why would a connection to my phone(right beside my comp) be only 1.4 MB/s ?
I'm sure the Z2 can handle faster speeds than that....would really be great if someone could give me a tip! thanks :highfive:

The Z2 isn't able to copy the content so fast on the SDcard. The I/O performance just isn't so great to handle 50MB/sec.

Thanks for the explanation! I was just looking for solution to this problem as file transfer has been extremely slow.
Does that mean buying a fast SD card is pure waste of money? :crying: I just paid $169 for the fastest SD I could find in store...

In my opinion yes. I barely notice any change between my slow Kingston Class 10 MicroSDXC card and my SanDisk Extreme.
Also benchmarks show there is little change. No need to overpay for fast cards unless you're going to use them in a PC card reader with USB3.0.

View and Control Nokia 8 from PC

Hi all,
Just bought my Nokia 8 the other day. Got it for AUD$499! from Harvey Norman - who was out of stock - but price matched by JB Hi-fi.
I was using a Samsung Note 4, which was doggone slow. Might be resetting that one and putting it up for sale - any potential takers?
My Note 4 used SideSync, which connected to by PC via USB cable. Sidesynced allowed me to see and control my Note4 on my PC. I can do everything on the phone from my PC - I liked sending texts and SMS for example.
There doesn't appear to be an equivalent for the Nokia 8. I have seen alot of mirroring apps that require screen casting, but none which allows connection via USB.
The question - what is the equivalent out there to SideSync (which is only compatible with Samsung phones. I've tried it and it does not work). I've enabled USB debugging. The Nokia 8 says SideSync keeps closing. I can see the phone from my PC as it's connected by USB - so I can see the files on the phone from my PC - but cannot see the phone's screen or do anything to the phone.
Thanks all.
Hi,
You could try AirDroid if you know, which it gives you the option to control the phone and send texts and many other things. The only thing which i don't know if it suits you, is that it syncs through the wifi network... You connect the phone to your wifi network, and from your pc you go to a link that the app gives you and scan the QR code and thats it...
Try it maybe it will do the job for you.

Thank you for responding. I really want a USB connection to the PC as going over the air through my companies WiFi I am sure will slow things down. I have looked at Apowermirror and they want you to pay to use it and it's UI is a bit clunky. There's also Wondershare Go, but there doesn't seem to be an app on the playstore for screen mirroring, though I did do this with my Note 4.
MyPhoneExplorer
Hello, give a try to My Phone Explorer. It's free and very straight forward I think. I used it without issues.
If you Google it you'll find a link from fjsoft, that's the right one.
Good luck.
Hello, i use Vyzor to cast the screen of my N8 on my PC by using the usb connection.
The application can be used as free but if you need some quality you will need the paid version.
