[Discussion] CyanogenMod7 - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

THREAD RULES: We DO NOT ask for ETA or release dates in this thread!
So it seems like everybody goes crazy when it comes to the porting of CM7. But why?
I got my hands on a SGS2 with CM7 installed. Tried it, experienced it a little. From what I experienced the CM7 wasnt something that special. I asked the owner of the phone what he though of the ROM. To my surprise he said "it's just a ROM". He also mentioned that the stock ROM was smoother.
So now I'm wondering, why all the fuzz? What are you expecting from CM7? What makes it so special and so popular?
I'm pretty sure that a lot of people who craves for the porting of CM7 has no clue of this.
(off topic: tbh, i'd rather prefer MIUI.)
edit: for the interface

My sister's Backflip has CyanogenMod 7 installed with 2.3.3 (Not even Froyo is released in Asia-Pacific regions) , it allows her to have OC/UV kernels from 600Mhz to 748Mhz . Her phone is wayyyyy less laggier than stock .(the difference is obviously obvious)

I'm not really good on those areas but arent you able to do that using SetCPU?

he said using oc/uv.. his sister device only support 600mhz by default, but because she uses custom oc/uv kernel, she can achieve 748mhz with help of setcpu. it depends on clock stepping that were supported by kernel, not by setcpu. setcpu only help to configure those clock stepping

Oh, never knew about that. From my use of SGA 800mhz is doing alright.
And as I mentioned, not really good at those areas so I didnt even know that "oc/uv" was overclock and undervolt xD

Some bugs fixed are gonna be fixed in CM. Camera quality should be bit better. Theme engine is built into ROM, so there will be much more themes for SGA. Im also excited about haptic feedback (not sure about this one).
And much more...

What i wish most for, is fix for SoD...

I'm not really excited for cyanogenmod, but for MIUI. I want it so bad!

MiUi is cyanogen based, if I'm not wrong.
First off I'm sure in cm there will be accurate battery reporting. No ****ty jumps in percentage.
Second, if CM is under way I believe developers will include uv, through kernels or modules. Overclocking though, may not be necessary.
Other than that the rom has so many tweaks. Over time and development CM will make our original firmware outmoded because it WILL get smoother.

Speed, stability, power, eyecandy, etc, etc.
But most of all; bugfixes and much more stability compared to stock firmware, as it is said that CM7 is build from the ground up so in my eyes it won't or even can't have the flaws that stock has.
Hey, it's only my opinion.

i think it`s only way to forget about SODs

Cyanogen is popular for a few reasons. It incoporates most worthwhile mods and runs normaly as well if not better than stock. Plus for me on a personal view it will help to get miui for sga.

You gave me a reason to wait for CM7 (Y)

hahaha..if you want to know..CM is a special ROM I guess, more unlock option on kernel than stock ROM, so I can say CM is a very customizing ROM.
for a prove, u can use an app called Tasker, on that app u can get more customized settings if u using CM.

How do you define perfect? A fully functional firmware or a speedy ROM?

I have always been confused by members who complain about the official SE firmware and the SE devs being completely incompetent and slow, when all of the custom ROMs have insufficiencies of their own and the devs are considered Gods. Especially, when our devs haven't brought us any of the major implementations themselves, like fully functional camera, 60 fps cap, 16mil colors, or multitouch.
No offense to our devs, because they have limitations by bootloader, but the problem isn't just bootloader, it's having someone who can create all the drivers, which was the case before bypass.
What is important to you? Fully functional or speed? Which bugs are major? A little lag on timescape or rebooting, or a touchscreen that freezes or becomes partially unresponsive?

It's a Question, dumby. How about an actual opinion rather than playing moderator?
Many people have questions about the differences between custom ROMs and official firmware.
What about fully functional AND fast? try wolfbreak's rom
Jokes aside, remember that SE gave up on x10 updates before going back on their decision and giving us gingerbread. And honestly, only the 2.3 custom roms don't have fully working cameras, Froyo is pretty much complete and has been my daily rom for many months now, i can't thank SE for that.

There are ZERO 2.2+ ROMS that are fully functional. PERIOD.
Why do xda fanboys seem to think different?
If SE released a ROM that didn't have a fully functional camera, xda members would lose it.

I know what your going to say to me, your thinking I'm jumping down your throat etc but you've answered your own question there. Repair with seus then root and optimise with flashtool. That way your phone will be fully functional and fast with the benefits from JIT etc. Hope this helps out
Edit,
Why not try out ericks 2.1 rom which is extremely fast, like gingerbread speeds and literally everything works. Want teether then grab barnacle for free off the market. This rom has been my daily for perhaps a week or two at a guess but you won't be disappointed with broken features etc. Trust me really worth a shot trying it out

If you or any other moron suggests that speed is the number one customer concern of software, you are STUPID.

No, check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941745 fully functional and possibly the fastest rom out there. Camera and video recording work 100% perfect. It's a custom rom, it all works, its fast and i wish you try it out before accusing me of being a liar.
Edit

The reason Erick's rom is so speedy is that many features(which most people do not use) are disabled. Once you add them on again, the speed is comparable to stock firmware. I would say that is the closest 'custom rom' to being fully functional.
All the 2.2+ roms, while very nice and speedy, often have things that don't work.. like camera, and all of them suffer from poor battery life. A big gripe for me is the wifi disconnect issue with all 2.2 and above custom roms. I find it hard to believe that most people would prefer speed over functionality.
I've tried most of the roms out there in my year with the x10, and I always found myself coming back to stock.
And now with the arc, I don't have a choice There are no custom roms for bootloader locked arcs

[Q] Best ROM and Best Kernel?

Hiya! Okay, I'm quite experienced with Android now, and I know this is a noobs question, and possibly frowned upon, but I was wondering what the best Kernel and ROM for my X10 is?
I previously used an X8 with CM7 (2.3.4) v.138 HACKDROID, and I pretty much want the same awesomeness on my X10 but better. There are a load here, and the Master Thread doesn't have any recommendations like the X8 Master Thread (which recommends HACKDROID).
I just need a few pointers and I won't post a noob question again. This is all I pretty much need to know.
Thanks
DM
If your into Cyanogen, check out CM7-ZMOD, butter smooth. If you want a more Sony Ericsson feel, check out Wolfs 2.3.3 rom. Again, butter smooth.
There is not really any kernel options at the moment. SE hasn't released the sources yet.

Thanks. Yeah, its just like Hackdroid I found a 'Power to The People' Kernel by DoomLord, but it seems to turn off my signal, wifi and the USB cannot be recognised at all?
Only two quams with the ROM is lack of Governers - Not unless this Smartass one is good enough?? And the Volume in general is far too low.
Wish there was a Kernel to improve the ability even further. It's got the potential.
if you want a fast, reliable rom then j's cm7 j004 with doomlord's custom kernel can't be beat. until se release sources for gingerbread. this is the best custom setup around... in my opinion...

As I stated, I'm no expert, in fact, I could even be completely incorrect. I have however read other peoples responses to similar questions about SE releasing their kernel sources. They state that the Linux kernel sources, which are licenced under the GPL, must be disclosed within a certain period of time, which I believe to be 15 days.
Apologies for my somewhat limited knowledge about such licenses.

Even the new Achotjan CM7 released... Just checked it now. Looks pretty awesome. I'd say try ZMOD one or The Achotjan CM7 if you are a Cynogen fan. I was using Wolf's 2.3.3 for almost two weeks now and I'd say thats the best if you dont want to use Cynogen ROM... Cheers
I'm going to give Wolf's a shot, but I really enjoyed ZMOD's, but it could be better. The HTC Mod keyboard doesn't work on it sadly. I've just resorted to using thumb keyboard, its pretty good actually
Went back to ZMOD. It's amazing. Plus, the new kernels are making it a better experience now. Its running like lightning now. And the battery has improved too. Doomlords kernel is amazing

No you don't have to update your kernel, and no you don't have to wipe anything. The custom kernel is optional. I'm using stock kernel on 4.0.2.1 and its extremely snappy. I'm going to update to 4.0.3 tonight.

I'm running Wolf's 4.0.3 with Stock Kernel and Undervolt Addon, running very smoothly. Juice plotter tells me 51 hours of battery after calibration and a two days running. Best ROM I've used!
I know this thread is old , but since now there are new kernels to choose from, there are certainly new answers for this thread...
So, what's the best ROM / kernel combo for you guys?

[Q] Which GB ROM?

Hello,
I have got the itch to try a GB ROM again. I'm currently running Project V and it's great, but i want some change. I tried CM7 RC1 when it first came out and couldn't deal with the horrible battery life. But I figure it's been quite a while so things may have improved since then. What would be everyone's suggestion on the best one? I don't like crazy themes or anything. I'm just looking for a stock GB look with decent battery life and stability. Thanks in advance!
I want to know this too!

Calm down now, it's nothing personal. I'm sure it runs just fine. I just like the stock GB look.
The cm7 have drastically improved battery is on part with most other GB roms. I personally love Miui revamped LE it is incredibly fast and the developers are extremely active in the forum. Along with that they update the ROM every Friday and you always think there is no way it can get better but somehow they always seem to exceed expectations

Biffmod
I personally find Simply Honey to be a bit much as well (no offense explodingboy, just not to my taste). So, leaning toward a stock-ish ROM, I recommend Biffmod Vibrant. It's basically CM7, but with a bunch of tweaks to fix the common complaints and a stock look. Here are the changes:
Features:
*Mix of AOSP/cm7 - 2.3.5
*black launcher2
*black camera
*notification widgets
*overclock capable kernel (1.7ghz)
*voodoo color and sound
*BLN/LED Notifications (on by default, the BLN app is not compatible)
*Ricktips
*glitch kernel HL thanks TK-Glitch

I've been using it ever since I switched from my HD2 to the Vibrant, and it's a dream. The only issue I've encountered is a "problem" with the overclocking: the kernel says it can go up to 1.7Ghz, but in my experience it tops out at about 1.4Ghz before the phone starts to freeze up. Other than that, like I said, it's great—I fully recommend it.

I just wanted to chime in, I've tried your rom before and it was fantastic (in fact, i think it was the first one to have bln fixed when all the other roms had broken bln). However, I was past my honeycomb theme phase and is looking for a more stock gb (or close to it) look now. I constantly search for themes for your rom that can make it look like stock but to no avail I think if you added a stock theme zip, you will be able to increase your user base by quite a significant amount of people.
It's great--I easily go a whole day with moderate to heavy Wifi usage (I don't have data) without having to plugin.

I ended up flashing Biffmod last night. It is amazing so far. So smooth and I haven't had a single issue yet. I also ended up flashing the newest Bali Kernel and have it UV'ed quite substantially. We'll see how it does on battery.
Thanks for the advice.
I personally prefer CM7 or Bionix 1.3.1
Every GB rom I've tried has not had a working GPS. I travel for a living so I need this to work. I have since gone back to 2.2 so my GPS works but out of curiosity, is there a GB rom/kernel that supports reliable GPS functionality?
I could be wrong but I think some of the gps work. GPS worked fine for me on Simply Honey 5.0, which I loved. I liked the themeing, especially the pink theme made to go with it!! I just decided to give Trigger (GB not Froyo) a try and I am equally happy with it. GPS isn't a huge issue for me, but I noticed on Trigger I get locks but they are not accurate, usually within 100ft. I also haven't tweaked any of the settings or tried any of the fixes. There are lots of great GB roms out there...just play around and see what suits you best. My Vibrant has always had great gps I've read that some GPS just don't work well on Vibrants.
I personally really like the AOSP GB Roms, Trigger, CM7 and MIUI are all great... have not tried Biffmod yet, but I intend to sometime.
Kernel-wise, I really like Glitch V11 HL
No problem!

It's not a kernel issue. It's just that your vibrant cant handle the overclock as all devices overclock and undervolt differently

[Q] New owner, what is the best ROM available?

Which ROM out there has the best support and the least flaws? I know none will be perfect but I would like a ROM that is fast, stable, and has optimal battery life. I know i could use the V6 Supercharger to make a ROM faster but I would like to know what ROM you guys recommend? Thanks
For the 10 billionth time: It's really up to you to figure this out. Considering that there's only 4 custom ROMs available (for the 7510), I think you are capable of doing the research yourself.

check out the dev. forums, do a little research. If your asking you shouldn't be flashing roms really. All v6 supercharger does in most cases is mess things up
So avoid flashing supercharger? It doesn't take a computer genius to flash a ROM, I just don't have the time to flash every ROM and mess with it, thanks for the positive responses though.

I have yet to see any real proof that the supercharger script actually makes this thing better. I have flashed and run all of the different ROMs, and its really up to you as far as look and feel are concerned.
As far as support goes, I will say that Task and Phantom has been great in keeping us bug free, but I have not interacted with the other devs as much, and so I won't knock their Roms because I can't say what their level of support is.
Happy Flashing
Overcome is good too
I will say that I like both in Paris and Overcome. In Paris has a custom theme which I'm not fond of but you can install the touchwiz theme over it if you prefer. I like Overcome because it is the stock honeycomb theme.
It's really a rather personal choice so you do have to try more than one to decide.

[Q] [Considering buying] Some specific questions...

I'm really interested on the Motorola Atrix (non-AT&T's), so I've been doing some research here on XDA and other places and it seems a really good device to buy.
It has official ClockworkMod recovery (regular and touch), official CyanogenMod 7.2, a great community behind it, coming ICS to the AT&T's version (which would be useful to get some proper libs for CM9 and perhaps CM10) and the benchmark results are fairly good.
But there are some questions that remain unanswered.
I looked for videos on YouTube of the CyanogenMod 7.2 on the Atrix to evaluate the experience and smoothness, but they are all old (early in the days of unofficial builds). Also, most of them have 1.4, 1.45 or 1.5 GHz of CPU clock.
I'm interested to know how it performs with a recent official CyanogenMod 7.2 and its stock kernel at default 1 GHz of CPU clock (again, both experience and smoothnes). The stock CM kernel is 2.6.32, right?
I appreciate any feedback you guys can give me. Thanks again! :good:
Me use 20120701
Change kernel ( last CM7 faux )
Work very well.
Battery life is good.
Now using 20120708

Sory for bad english.

Hey
I own an ATT Atrix 4G device which runs on the official stable cm7.2.
I never over/under clock my device because i hate doing that..
Its is very smooth, very quick and responsive. No lag at all.
Also there are better launchers (i.e. the touchwiz launcher) which are way more responsive then stock ADW and have absolutely no startup lag.
So long story short, it is a great device, I love it and i would suggest so buying it.
Sorry for my bad English, Nathan.
I'd invest in a different phone that doesn't overheat and doesn't lag as much as the atrix.
lags? what kind of lags? I am using official CM7 with stock kernel and it's orrery stable and fast. but sometimes I wanna go to back to blur ROM for webtop, this is one of the best features.
Thanks everyone for your answers! :good:
One more question: I found the device folder of the official CyanogenMod, but I can't find the kernel sources of the official CyanogenMod. I only found these sources, but they are not on the CyanogenMod's github. Could someone tell me where to find the official kernel sources?
As always, thanks in advance! :good:

Thanks, but I'm looking for the kernel's source code.
I sugest TWRP instead of clockworck, has a better interface.
This phone is pretty reliable, but i would get a Galaxy Nexus For 350 from the Playstore.

I can't complain about my good old Atrix, but I have to admit that Nexus is possibly the future of Google.
