[Q] unlocked my evo 3d via htc method... screwed or not? That is the question... - HTC EVO 3D

How do I achieve s-off? Can I revese HTC unlock method? Is there a thread or answer available? I'm not a complete noob at rooting but got excited and didn't read thoroughly before committing to the HTC process. Started sifting through threads and haven't discovered an answer yet... Please help

I've been trying to sift through them as well just out of curiosity. Here is what I have gleaned from all of the threads on this subject:
1) Unless you previously had s-off through revolutionary, the HTC method will not give you or currently allow you to get s-off
2) Although the HTC method does unlock the boot loader, other things are still locked preventing you from flashing a custom recovery.
3) Currently there is no way to root or get super user access once you've applied the HTC method
4) Currently there is no way to undo the HTC method.
Probably not what you wanted to hear but that is my understanding as it is currently. That doesn't mean that a Dev won't figure out how to allow you to do those things in the next few days or weeks. You'll just have to keep checking.

Thank you, maybe ill just "lose" my phone and get it replaced

I would wait a week or so. Someone will probably figure it out.

Try this thread. Apparently this version of CWM recovery will work with the 1.50 hboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225812

I think if you search other threads you'll see that it only works if you have previously had s-off.

There you go! That didn't take long at all. Now you don't have to "lose" your phone.

thank you
I really appreciate the info... I'll check it out tonight and let you all know how it goes. This is my absolute favorite forum bar none. By the way, I was being facetious when I made the statement about "losing" my phone... laugh every once in a while! I did when I basically noobed my own phone.

Anyways my question is...
Is it Possible yet to Fully Root the Evo 3D? And if so, is it also Possible to Install a Custom Recovery like ClockworkMod?
Thanx in Advance!

Root is available. Head to the development section to learn how to root and flash a recovery.

you don't need to flash any of the ROMs if you dont like them. I would root in case HTC/sprint sends a forced update. Might as well right?

Come to the Dark Side lol..... We have full root & s-off. 2 Recovery's to choose from (clockwork & Team Win Recovery Project), kernels/overclocking, and modified stock roms popping up daily. Aosp is still a little ways out, but there's still plenty to do, while we wait.

This is probably a super noob question, but I haven't quite gotten into the 3VO development scene yet. I keep hearing that the bootloader is yet to be unlocked, but people are talking about a permanent root already?
Can someone explain to me the difference between temp root and permanent root? I know the difference between temporary and permanent, but how does it apply to rooting your 3VO? Also, how does a locked boot loader affect us and why do we want it unlocked? Last thing, what is S-off? Thanks!

Permanent root means S-off and a few other things. People are talking about HTC when they speak of unlocking bootloaders. If you root your phone through AlphaREV, your phone will be permanently rooted.

Permanent root is only available via an unlocked bootloader, because of the write protection on the phone. Fortunately for the community a combined effort between Alpharev & Unrevoked, resulted in the bootloaders being unlocked Friday evening. While HTC did say that they would unlock the loaders, the "Revolution" tool is the reccomended way to proceed as there's no way to say what sort of stipulations HTC might incorporate. Check one of the many S-Off threads in the developement section or pm me if you need a more detailed answer.

Question about the latest update from HTC/Sprint and unlock

Hello,
Last week there was an update for the phone which brought it to 2.3.4. Is it unlocked now? Do I still have to do the s-off thing to install new roms?
I'm new to the android mod stuff so don't worry about insulting my knowledge as I have much to learn about android. I've never performed a custom rom install on my android phones (only WM phones).

No its not unlocked and it still has S-On. If you took the update your going to have to use the HTC method of getting S-Off. Unless there's another method that i haven't heard of. This was the first android phone I ever owned and ever rooted and i have to say if was pretty easy after hours of reading over and over the how to root guide . The hardest part of rooting was "finding" a working Parallel Desktop and working version of windows 7 for my brother's Mac from the Internet.

Revolutionary is a tool that was developed by Alpharev and Unrevoked. It will set your phone to S-off (security off). With S-off, your phone is fully unlocked and you have full r/w access to all partitions (you can flash kernels, radios etc). HTC's unlock method does not give you S-off. It 'unlocks' the bootloader, while it remains S-on (security on). That is a half ass unlock. It will still allow you to flash a custom recovery, which you will then be able to use to flash roms. However, as I understand it, you can only write to the system partition. That means you can't flash radios, kernels, etc. You can only flash roms. Basically, HTC's unlock is not a full unlock, you are limited to what you can flash. Revolutionary will give you a full unlock with no restrictions, you can do whatever you want.
Revolutionary isn't updated to work with the latest OTA update yet (hboot 1.5), but it's being worked on. Those guys are really good, and I'd think that they will have their tool updated to work with the latest hboot at some point in the not so far future (speculation). As knowledge suggested, if I were you I would definitely wait for revolutionary to be updated, instead of going with HTC's half assed unlock method.
Thanks for the detailed reply. I have much to learn and appreciate the info! I'm not sure what I'll be looking for - about the only thing I know I want is tethering. If someone can make it less likely to drop calls that would be HUGE.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I could gather, from the Android forums besides researching here. Revolutionary is not doing an update for Hboot 1.50.... But also was said possibly figuring a way to downgrade the hboot. Either way I hope something is done, because I do not want to take HTC unlock method. I was unfortunate n already had the update when I purchased the phone. So Im gonna just sit here and wait..

NO, They just added support for more devices. A few days ago only EVO 3d & the EU Sensation were supported, but now there are a few more on that list.
I figured.....lol
Honestly, even after reading that. Im still going to hold out to see if an unofficial method comes out. I think its just to early in the game to just throw in the towel, and take HTC unlocking method.
Like knowledge651 recommended, just wait.. and hope for the best, anything is still possible..
I was just curious, if possibly someone else knew more information about the matter.
EVO3D
Could someone explain why the revolutionary method is better than the HTC method? I've never done any thing other than stock as this is my first android so I'd like to understand why some are waiting.
2 reasons, one revolution WORKS, period. Complete s-off and root. Htc...limited unlocking. Two, you need to register serial number with htc.
To all thinking about upgrading to the new ota
Don't take ota.......do not.

Question about the installation method for honeycomb

How long do you guys think it will be before there is a method as simple as just flashing a honeycomb rom without having to do the method in the development section?
I really want honeycomb but i'm not sure the risk of bricking is worth it. i LOVE my flyer and would be devastated if i bricked it!
Just curious as to what you guys think.

this up to HTC and does have nothing to do with what is going on here. true that the procedure is quiet difficult, but not impossible. if you addicted same me , sure you're not gonna wait till HTC will come with their release. it's up to you which method are you going to choice.....

Whatever method is used, it will still likely require the flashing of the HC HBoot and radio, so your risk of brickage is probably about the same regardless.

Think what trips most people up is the usage of adb. I was having problems with my laptop recognizing my flyer when I was I hboot, so I couldn't get past the 1st step. :/ I only had a short time to mess with before I had to leave on business. My question is, I've flashed radios, kernels and tons on my Incredible and Thunderbolt, without using adb... I'm assuming that the same could be done, if the files were named correctly? (Pimgblah)
Well I would say I'm very familiar with adb, but I was still reluctant. (i went ahead and did it anyway ) and I'm incredibly glad I did. But answering your question, you don't only use adb in the guide. You also use fastboot. So I'm sure there is some difference there or something (i'm no expert) .

Yes. Look at this:

if you are htc dev unlock and doing this, u need to lock ur bootloader to install it, then unlock again after, make sure u have ur unlock_token
Sorry but it makes no sense to me that people are recommending the need to relock and then install this update. It can already be installed by those that are unlocked by downloading the version that nitsuj17 posted in the dev forums. This gives you all of the "benefits" of the update without having to relock. Plus, nitsuj17 is already working on a new version of Viper with the latest update.
Is the idea to get the new bootloader? To what advantage would that be (obviously it is to people that are not unlocked)?

need you ask!!!!!!!
haha this is why I LOVE this community!
you guys are awesome.
in the rezound forums, once I tested s-off (on my only personal device mind you, having to use a paper clip....) and once I got it, they were also making the tool for about 6 other phones, so before it got released ALL phones had to be tested, so it took a bit longer for it to come, and when I made like the splash thread, some people spammed me saying how I'm rubbing it in their faces, and that's completely not true. I mean, I must have rebooted my phone over 100 times with that paper clip, I also figured out for the team that the SD-card was the reason, so that saved a lot of time and hassle for them.
long story short, I sure as hell don't regret selling that brick of **** and buying this awesome phone with awesome people to share it with!
Since we are only waiting for a tool for just our phone (I think anyway) it shouldn't take nearly as long as that wait IMO, but again I don't know. But it is pretty cool that the exploit was found in a new update, usually they break the exploits not open them up lol.
big props to superdave for finding that otherwise this wouldn't of happened I don't think, or certainly not this fast anyway.

New DNA with Questions

I hope I posted this in the rigth section, if I didnt I appologize. So, I used to have an HTC Thunderbolt and yesterday I upgraded to the DNA and I love it. But I do have a few questions. See I want to root it, but I dont want to have to hassle with all the custom ROM stuff again. Plus all I really see a need for me is to have root access. Im still a little new to the rooting scene and just want to make sure I know what im doing before I do it. So here are my questions.
1) If I root will I still be able to install the OTA updates that come on my phone?
2) Are the two links above both rooting methods, just different ways of doing it?
3) If yes to 2, is there a current "best" way to root the DNA?
4) If I decide to un-root, is there a way to do that? (im sure there is and a guide even)
I think that is all the questions I have for now. Thank you very much and keep up the great work here.

Follow the first link you posted because in order to unlock the bootloader you need the super CID hack then after you do the super CID hack go to the htcdev.com page and follow those instructions and then either flash a rooted rom or the Subusybox.zip to get root
To un-root simply lock the bootloader and run the RUU file

Im still a little new to the rooting scene and just want to make sure I know what im doing before I do it. So here are my questions.
1) If I root will I still be able to install the OTA updates that come on my phone?
2) Are the two links above both rooting methods, just different ways of doing it?
3) If yes to 2, is there a current "best" way to root the DNA?
4) If I decide to un-root, is there a way to do that? (im sure there is and a guide even)
I think that is all the questions I have for now. Thank you very much and keep up the great work here.

1) In short, no. To get the ota you'll have to install the stock recovery, and maybe relock, etc, etc. The easiest way is just to flash a rom based off the ota
2)Yes, but the second links to a thread which then in turn links to the first thread you in posted. Just use the first link you posted
3)See #2
4)ruu and fastboot oem lock, if your s off then its a little more complicated, but you will be able to be 100% stock as opposed to 99%

Thank you guys very much for that info. I greatly appreciate it. One last question for now. I have seen the term "S-off" a few times, what exactly is that?

It means that the Security Flags have been turned OFF (S-OFF) and it allows you to write unsigned.img's and do other stuff to parts of the device that with Security ON you wouldn't be able too such as writing to the boot partition while in recovery, flash radios to the radio partition
