Intermittent shutdown? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I am having a strange issue with my GS2.
Every other day (it's been like this since the beggining) my phone has been shutting down by itself. When this happens I have to power it on. It will then happen again after one or two times and be okay after.
I reflashed, same issue.
Anybody else has similar symptoms ?
edit:
Running Cog 1.42 with the provided kernel
KG6 modem, flashed by myself after I flashed KH3 and didnt like it.
Had similar symptoms before when I was on Leomar Revolution.

hmmm...
have you ever seen such a shutdown? any error messages or fc's before?
or, maybe a stupid question: empty battery?
if you have this problem on every rom you tried (stock also?), perhaps it's a
hardware fault?
also you can try logcat to trace down the reason...

^ Thanks for the reply.
What command should I input to logcat ?

install alogcat from the market, or (if you have an adb connection set up) just use adb logcat from your pc shell.
see http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/logcat.html for details.
the problem is, your shutdowns occur without warning, so maybe you would have to use "adb bugreport" to get informations from "before" the shutdown. bugreport issues tons of data though, so you would have to search a bit...

Some of my friends had the same issue. Phone kept shutting down. They put a piece of parper/card between the battery door and the battery. Phone hasnt shut down ever since

So you suggest that there's enough space between the case and the back of the battery for it to move?
I doubt it. Everything in this device is tucked in really tight! No.room for moving parts or w/e.

[Q] Strange Restarts

Hey,
My SGSII is on the KE7 stock and rooted by CF-Root 3.7. My device sometimes restarts completely on itself and sometimes android restarts only. This is so annoying and I've searched a lot in the forums but I couldn't find what is the problem exactly and how can I solve that.
Thanks in advance.
Check and clean the battery contacts, there is another thread about this problem. It seems to only effect a few devices.

I think it's related to software problem, because sometimes android only restarts.
Can you give me link another thread about this?
Happened to me a couple of times too and sometimes while playing some games. I hope 2.3.4 would fix this

I had about 5-6 times complete restarts (seeing GT-I9100 boot splash) and about 7-8 times android restarts since yesterday.
Ive been getting the same issue. Ive found a thread and people have found it to be a wifi issue. Try WIFI Manager from the market, it seems to have sorted mine out for the moment. Its a strange one ill tell ya.

Even when I'm not using wifi (it is off), I had restart.
Anybody have this issue with KE8 ?
I have these restarts too, and i can reproduce them. If i put on some music with the build in player it reboots, sometimes at the 1st song sometimes at the 4th its a bit random.
I also have this reboot issue if i want to upload a picture of 4MB or more with twitter.
Tael take a look at this thread over hear:
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/4954-Random-Restarts-on-New-SG2
It sucks big time considering that I'm merely 3 weeks away from mine! :-(
Hope someone could come up with a fix soon!
I wonder if all the handsets are affected...
How weird is this. As i posted my reply i had a callout to a job. As i was on the phone to the BT Tech Guy my phone went blank and would not wake up. After the call it would not boot. i had to reinsert the battery. This is not good imo.
Im now thinking of returning this phone as its more trouble than its worth
Here's another thread I just found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062065
They seem to suggest that a downgrade fixed their problem.
What im going to do is install the stock firmware without data ect.
See how its goes then maybe if that dosent work send its away to phone heaven. Or install cm7 when its available .

The whole firmware just like he mentioned in the other thread.
PS: Check out BMC sometime, will ya?
Until recently its been fine, but over the past 1 and a half weeks, I've had 1 full restart and numerous android restarts.
I found that getting a new sim card solved it for me.

[Q]My s2 powered off it self

the phone powered off it self until i pressed the power button to turn on again. i noticed this often happened when i put in my pocket for a while. but when i put it on table over night it didn't happen.
roms that i tried that had the same problem:
batista 3.7++
lightening 3+,6+
cognition 1.4+
apps that i tried uninstalled but no avail:
-setcpu
-daemon control(batista rom)
-juice defender
is it due to motherboard issue? appreciate your advice. thanks.
have u tired wiping data and dalvik cache before installing any rom?

So the this issue s only occurring when the phone is in your pocket and never when out of your pocket.
this happens to my Phone as well.. its kinda random...
sometimes when am listening to music and sometimes when its just on standby
for example it just restarted which reminded me to search for this error...
few days ago it was on standby and had shut itself down and the battery was completely drained after 5 hours without anything on.

yes, found it only happens when putting in my pocket. when charging over night or putting on my work desk, it didn't happen.
and yes, it happened few times when it turned off it self, it lost about 10% to 20% battery in just few minutes... the phone was warm when it happened. that was why i took out to check and found it already powered off..

thanks for your advice, will try stock rom then
Ya, do that... just to see what is going on.
More on the technical side, the screen needs minimum 500Mhz to get out of Sleep Mode. Some custom Rom's use a low voltage or "underclock" feature that reduces the power consumption but also the number of CPU steps. That is what makes your phone crash and reboot randomly.
Once you put the stock ROM, do a sdcard wipe (if you use one), just to be safe. It should take several hours, so do it over the night. Personally I would not use an external sdcard during the one week test, just be sure.
You could also have a RAM (hardware) issue, ya. But 99% of the time is related to software. Bad memory degrades fast so you will see your random reboots pop at a faster frequency. If you did all the above and still experience random reboots, run adb logcat to see what is going on at that specific moment. If you get error codes like:
Code:
code 1 (SEGV_MAPERR), fault addr 00000000
you are dealing with bad memory unfortunately and need to service your phone.

I also heard that some people had bad battery contacts on their S2. Clean them with some audio head tape cleaner and cotton swabs, than make sure the contacts are proper... it should eliminate this possibility. In a way, it makes sense since you move a lot with your phone in your pocket.

is there a guide on how to install Stock ROM back on? cant find any...
how can i root my sgs2...?
it also happened to my phone. so i brought it back to the store where i purchased it and told them that it was shutting down randomly when i put it in my pocket. after 15 days of waiting i called them for follow up because they told me it will take 7-10 working days. they told me that the phone never shut down in the service center. what can i do about it? i don't know how to flash or root. this is my first android phone.
I have finally found a solution... installed XXKH3 FW stock, not rooted yet, and installed an application from the android market called Load Monitor
Code:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.landak.loadmon
and enabled only Add Notifications, only notify high load, autostart and only screen on... seems to do the job, no battery drainage and most of all NO SOD (Sleep Of Death) or restarts anymore
If you still have problems try checkin wake lock from the options of the app...
Hope it helps

The phone did not rebooted in their store because they did not move it, you have a bad battery contact that can be fixed easy.

It could just be a bad battery. I'd suggest wiping and flashing back to stock. If the reboots continue, you can probably get AT&T to give you a replacement.
I'm getting the same problem as you. Before I started flashing (I'm still seeing the problem in AOKP, too), it was happening on the stock rom. I'm going to flash back to stock and see if that helps for me.
By the way, I think it's a hardware issue also. It seems like the reboots are more frequent when I'm holding the phone or when it is in my pocket, maybe the contacts in the battery are the problem? It happens if I just sit the phone on my desk also, so I know I'm not accidentally holding the power button
EDIT: 1
Okay, after flashing back to the stock rom, the problem persisted. I just picked my phone up and it turned of as soon as I lifted it. Have you noticed that lifting/touching is related also?

My problem was also hardware related... it seemed to stem from a wonky power button. I contacted ATT and in 15 hours, FedEx had my new phone at my door. Win.

Phone losing Network connection randomly during call

Well I had this phone for a month now, and it was fine all along until a couple days back, what happens is during a call randomly (once a day or so) the phone loses the network and the call gets disconnected, then it comes back after a few seconds. The 1st time this happened, it didn't come back and even switching to airplane mode didn't work, I had to reboot. Now I bought this phone used and I don't recall making any changes. I was on LPX modem initially then changed to kh3 so reverted back to lpx but the problem still persists. Even tried cleaning the sim card and contacts. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue or most likely a network issue? Considering it worked fine for almost a month.
Does this happen to some of y'all?

Hmmm, what you trying to say here? The network is at fault? This didn't happen on my earlier i9003. And this does happen once almost on a daily basis.
Had similar problem few times... disappeared after random rom changes. Also could be something with usb port (this broken bastard even changed my phone state to driving mode while conversating, in result my phone turned speaker on and was screaming to my ear in public places...) If it connects to network properly everytime after reboot I would say its hardware or software problem - that means, something that you could handle directly or indirectly.

Well now it just drops the network altogether only when there is an active call. It doesn't/hasn't happened to me while using data or anything like that, just that it drops the call along with mobile network and reconnects after like 5 seconds. Quite annoying this. What you have mentioned is some contact in your usb port (dirt etc) causing the phone to jump to driving mode. Were you having similar network issues?

Don't think it's hardware related... sunt started after flashing 4.0.4 .... did a full wipe and reinstalled lpw => speed mod => slim ics => siyah 3.3.3d hope everything is good. flashed this morning. will wait a few days
I've had the exact same problem, and can't ever recall it happenning on gingerbread, Only noticed it on CM9. Looks like an ICS sandwich bug, it talks to the hardware differently so this would explain why gingerbread doesn't seem to have this problem, If you still have these issues maybe try a gingerbread modem, and see how that goes. They are backwards compatiable with ICS.
Well I went a day without this happening to me on CM9, I'll try it out for another day or so to check.

[Q] Phone keeps shutting down

Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
