[Q] How to do system update when rooted - HTC EVO 3D

My evo 3d is rooted and is running viper rom with rc mix kernel. It wants me to do the system update but i am not sure how to go about this process. Do i just do the update, lose root, and then reroot using the new method? Do i have to unroot first? Do i just do a factory data reset? This is my first android phone so I am new to all of this considering i owned an iphone before. Any help would be appreciated.

It's all good. You just need to wait a little. Basically the rom developers will take that system update and use it as a base. This takes time due to the fact that they need to ensure all of their features they have implemented still work. Also some developers wait to update until other kernel developers have a stable kernel that works with their rom. Long story short, just wait and flash your own updates.

Also, to add something, you don't actually have to wait if you have s-off. I didn't. I didn't even flash a rooted ROM. Basically, I flashed a stock recovery image, updated my phone just like normal, flashed teamwin recovery, installed su through teamwin recovery, and then rebooted my phone. I have root, s-off, and the most up to software/hboot/everything that came in the update. For more info check out these links.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...ate-if-youve-unrevoked-forever-heres-how.html

I would flash the deodexed root rom from Haus http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223979 then the All 2.08.651.2 Firmware Minus hBoot from the bootloader, then I would flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224659 because RCMix won't work after the update
And to clear out the notification, go to Menu>Settings>System updates>HTC software updates>Uncheck Scheduled check

Thanks everyone

So I flash that ROM first (I watched the video) and then I install that kernel which can later be flashed over using another kernel if I want to overclock again

Yep, hopefully 2.3.4 kernels will be out soon so we can OC and get better battery life

It's a clear now perfect

Htc evo 4g lte UPDATE to 1.22.651.3 710RD

Can anyone help me. I was rooted using the method with Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, not really a full root if anyone knows, anyways i was able to have it rooted installed all my apps like Droid wall, Titanium Backup etc.. Now a couple of days ago a software update from Sprint came in and updated to this 1.22.651.3 710RD...
Am i correct to understand that I can not fully root this now? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
If you accepted the ota update, then you can still unlock through HTC dev and still flash roms. But with the update, cannot obtain s-off.
Yes updated to 1.22.651.3 710RD
I thought so I did do the OTA update and should have known better. I hope someone will come out with a way to have S-OFF. Thanks jdcasino

Can anybody explain how to flash a Rom using my computer after HTC dev unlock and not being rooted?
Thanks in advance for any info!

By the way I'm on the new OTA and I heard conflicting sides. Some say you can install Roms by flashing through your computer even though you're not rooted (but have done the HTC dev unlock), some say you can't. Also is there a way to root the EVO LTE with the OTA? I've tried the methods that say it'll work but it keeps saying permission denied. :'(

NEVER ACCEPT AN OTA IF YOU ARE ROOTED,OR EVER PLAN ON ROOTING!
Thats rule #1 of being a rooted user.
End of story. I dont know how these threads keep popping up.

HTc DEV unlock = root for all practical purposes. You just slap on Twrp and flash a rooted ROM.
However, since you accepted the OTA you are now severly limited even with an unlocked bootloader. See the first part of my post.
I actually wasn't rooted or unlocked when i took the ota. I was happy with the speed of the new evo so i didn't think i would need to overclock it like every other device i owned thus no need to root. I took the ota cuz i had major issues with my wifi and that's a huge deal to me since 3g blows so bad in my area that my browser times out..... long story. Sorry. Now i just want to customize. So sorry if this is a repetitive question, but can i use adb shell to flash a rom? If so, does anybody have a step by step? I've always just used clockwork mod in the past so i am new to adb.
Recap:
have the OTA
not rooted
HTC DEV unlocked.

Ok thanks, I'll try again. Couldn't get it to install before but I'll try again. The computer recognized my phone but wouldn't communicate with it after that. Drivers are updated, restarted computer no dice. I'll try again though.
Ok so I flashed twrp image through fast boot, said it worked but I don't see any effect. Tried to boot into recovery and nothing but the stock recovery. Any ideas?

Try rebooting your phone.. I had the same thing happen but after a second full reboot than it would boot into twrp

Sounds like regawmod, you need to reboot manually as aoo as it says rebooting. It would probably be easier to unlock manually.a lot of people seem to have trouble. It will probably be updated soon but its been a problem for the last two updates.

EVO 3D CDMA ICS OTA and just UNLOCKED

Hello,
I installed the ICS OTA on my EVO 3D, i then went to htcdev and unlocked my phone. How do i gain root access from here? All this googling is giving me a headache lol. I keep finding so many different ways but it all seems a little confusing. Am i able to install a custom recovery then flash SU without flashing another rom? if so how? or do i have to lose everything and start over again? I miss good ol' unrevoked lol.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
This is the reason there are stickies at the top of every forum.

Decide which recovery you want, and flash it through bootloader.
I understand that, thank you. And im not trying to be lazy, ive gone through 10 different pages of posts so far and just about everyone of them references not flashing ICS rom. So i just wanted to make sure i wasn't ahead of myself for already having the official ICS. But i also don't want to flash any roms if i don't have to. I just want to gain root access. So thank you for the tip. I will start looking for recoveries.
hey don't feel bad, i had 1.4 s-off and went to stock so to get the bug free official ics and am extremely let down - to put it mildly.
i too am nervous over bricking all over again and i wonder if better options are out since may.
i also feel the forum is more fragmented and evo3d specific deving seems to have slowed.
i sure would welcome a clear path to best root from here and best bug free ics jb sensev4 rom
or am i dreaming

Hey man, I figured it out!
after taking the ota from sprint, I went and unlocked my phone with htcdev, then flashed twrp recovery from the official site for the recovery, the only method that worked for me was using the adb method, after that I flashed su, the newest su kept failing so I flashed the 2.3.something version then I was able to flash the new 3.x su. All is well and I know have a stock rooted Ics.

New Rezound user

Hello everyone!
I recently purchased a Rezound and I want to jump into rooting/modding it. Im coming from the Samsung Fascinate, and that thing was super easy to root. I've searched the forums here but I just couldn't find a root guide. I want to flash Infection rom but I really don't know how to go about it. I don't know what this s-off and s-on business is about and I don't want to do anything to my phone without further research to prevent bricking my device. My software number reads: 3.14.605.13 710RD. I am running stock android 4.0.3. Could anyone please send me in the right direction to go about flashing custom roms on my new device? Thank you!

Thank you so much! i successfully installed infection rom and am using it with s-on buy flashing the boot.img after flashing the rom. i think i will stay away from s-off for now, but thank you again for your help
I was on the same OTA as you. Unlocked via HTCDev, flashed recovery in fast boot and superuser. From there you can flash ROMs while s-on. I went a step further using the unlimited.io website and got s-off.
If you stay s-on you need to have a computer to flash the boot.IMG from the ROM you want which is the kernel.

hey again guys, i just have a few questions.
Say if i were to want to flash a newer version of infection rom, would be okay to just wipe cache and dalvik then flash the newer version unless instructed by the dev to wipe everything? Also, since I am currently s-on, will i have to flash the boot.img everytime i flash a new custom rom or update infection rom?

I always wipe everything but yea you should be OK. If you change ROMs you have to flash the boot.img. I didn't stay son long so in not sure about updates. Try it if it doesn't boot then you have too.

I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37061598 its the unofficial port of cm 10.1, stang is awesome enough to build an update every fourth night. So we do flash an update zip on top of our first flash and so on
If its an update to the ROM you should just be able to flash on top of it and wipe cache\dalvik cache. the only time you need a complete full wipe is if the android version changes from 4.2.2 which android version doesn't change often OR if you start having major issues.
As far as flashing the boot.img in bootloader every update. You should ask the dev or an s-on person using the rom. I wouldn't know because I s-off'd my rezound within the first 2hours of having it

Actually, it depends on the ROM. I use EclipticRez and Snuzzo and Hawknest have it set up to create a PH98IMG file of the kernel you choose in setup, it puts in in a folder so all you have to do as s-on is navigate to it in recovery and flash. So no need for a computer.
I've had the phone since it came out and I'm still s-on. Doesn't bother me a bit.
I looked into S-off for the Rezound and I found Hasoon2000s all in one tool kit found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696394
I also read about how there no more support for windows OS for s-off. I'm not familiar with linux unfortunately (something i have to check off in my bucket list someday). Is there any way to achieve s-off while using windows?
I did the wire trick on windows 7, I search for a guide for you on xda. I'll edit the post if I found something
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612035 I found this. Its exactly what you need

[Q] [Help] Will I loose root+S-Off if I upgrade Android?

Hi!
Actually I have rooted my HTC Evo 3D that has a Swisscom Android 2.3.4 Firmware.
I was wondering, if I apply the updates that are available (Android 4.0.3), will I loose the root? (seems to be the case)
(I've just rooted my phone, I've kept the original ROM)
But more important will my device that is S-Off be S-On again?
Thanks for help and reply
If you use the ota or ruu you will lose root but if memory serves me you can't upgrade while unlocked anyways. There are upgrades on here that will allow you to keep root though. Search for the pg86img that captain throwback posted. Flash it. Update hboot to 1.58.58 wipe all partitions reboot recovery then flash ics ROM. Although not all ics roms require 1.58+ hboot. Read the op of the ROM you plan on flashing and it should state requirements. Aosp ics and jb use 1.5 and lower hboots.
Hope this helps.

You will not loose s off by upgrading/downgrading or running the ruu
If you run ruu...everything goes back to stock, you WILL stay s off. You will loose root though, so you'll need to install a recovery, and flash super user....you do not have to unlock boot loader again, since you're s off

[Q] Bootloader Unlocked, but have problems

Hi. I'm new to the HTC One family. I bought a used rooted unit on Swappa and flashed the Google Play Edition on the phone, which was great, until I installed an over-the-air update, which was unavoidable. I'm now running Android 4.3 Build # JWR66v.H10. When I go to Bootloader mode, it says the phone is unlocked and tampered. When I go to use superuser it tells me the phone is not rooted.
How do I get the bootloader to not be tampered? Do I need that to be fixed to root again? How do I re-root? I'd like to not receive these OTA updates as well, to avoid problems in the future.
All help and suggestions are appreciated!
just reflash SuperSU for your device and you should be rooted again, for the tampered i believe you have to flash the RUU to get that back to stock android and stock bootloader.

You can either go s-off to get rid of that or go back to full stock.
And ya just flash latest superSU and you should be rooted.
