[Q] Android without gmail ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there
I am on Android since about 2 months, using a HTC Desire S. As I am allergic with Sense, I direclty installed a custom rom, from wich I deleted useless applications to me.
This is when I figured out that deleting Gmail will prevent the calendar to work ("You have no calendars").
So I got connected to my Gmail account from the web (created especially to access the android market), and I noted that my calendar were syncronized, and worst, that all my contacts from the phone were there too.
I am not quite parano, but I'd like to know if there is a way to keep the calendar and contacts only on the phone.
Autosync is disabled on my phone, but it had probably been enabled on the early days, so would disabling the auo sync prevent FOREVER my calendar and contacts to be uploaded to gmail, and manly, is it possible to use the calendar without installing the gmail apk ?
Thank you

Can't tell you about what the sync is doing, because I honestly do not care, so I haven't looked into it, BUT what I can tell you is that the calendar works beautifully eventhough I don't have GMail installed.

Thanks for your information
Well then...
I found somethin' about these apks :
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
But I did not delete them, I can find them on my /system/app/ folder, when I tried to install them it asked me if want to replace it, I said Yes but then I have the report with the green check (as a good thing happened), but next to it it's writtent "Application not installed"...
Well it did nothing I think but this doesn't seem to be my issue, as they are already there.

OK,
What I had to do, is simply go in the "account & sync settings" menu, click on my gmail account (synced off) and then launch a calendar sync...
So this is a force go, if you want to use calendar, you need to sync it at least once.
Quite fair but could be better, even Bada needs a Samsung account to use the store since Bada 2.0...

Google calendar doesn't sync

I can't work out why, but stuff added to my google Calendar on my phone, doesn't sync to my online google calendar.
Stuff added online, shows up on my phone's calendar with a red marker when you open the calendar. But stuff added on the phone, doesn't show up online! When you add something using the monthly widget, it shows up with a blue marker, and doesn't seem to upload to google. This is really annoying, and no amount of going in to Data sync settings and forcing synchronisaition seems to fix it. Somewhere, I must have set up something wrong, I assume, but can anyone tell me where..?
OK,
So I 've managed to figure out that there are multiple calendars on the Hero. One must be the google online one, and the other must be the phone one. Both are called "My calendar". I can't find a way of deleting the phone one, or changing its name, or just using the online one as default, but I have gone on to the website and changed the name of the online one to something different. This now means I can identify the differences between them, and put stuff on my online calendar easily from my phone.
But can anyone tell me how I can move appointments between calendars? Or delete the phone only calendar altogether? I have no need for it, if I have an online calendar!!
On mine one is called "my calendar" and the other is my google email login name. Seems like my calendar is local to the phone whereas the "other" is the online calendar which could be shared with others.
Don't know yet how to move between the two or how to delete the local one. Mine always defaults to the online one so I just never change it.

Hello everybody,
I am having the exact same issue on a non-rooted HTC Magic (32A). The problem must have occured because I did not directly sign on my gmail account during the setup wizard, but did that later on.
As a result, a "my calendar" cal was created and was made the phone's default one. Later on, I did sign to gmail and, as a result, obtained access to my google calendars. However, the "my calendar" account remains there and I have not been able to remove it from the list of calendar accounts. To make things worse, selecting to create a new calendar event preselects "my calendar" instead of my own gmail calendar.
Of course I can always return the phone to factory defaults, but that would mean that I'd have to reinstall my applications, do a zillion of tuneups etc etc. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish the same thing? Or a workaround to preselect my own gmail calendar as the default one?
Thanks in advance for any info provided.

EDIT: I am not really sure whether signing directly at the first setup wizard execution avoid the creation of "my calendar" altogether, OR it just creates it but sets the gmail calendar as the default.... Can anyone who has directly provided his/her gmail account during the initial setup wizard, confirm whether:
(a) a local "my calendar" calendar exists (or not) and
(b) which calendar is the default one, when a new calendar event is created

Yes, the local "my calendar" still exists.
When I create a new event, it uses whichever calendar I selected the last time I created an event.
In my case, my google calendar is labelled with my full name, and the HTC one is "my calendar", so it's easy...

And you connected to google services right at the initial setup wizard, without skipping it? There goes the theory then...

I'm on a HTC Magic and no matter which calendar I select during event creation, the next event will again default to "my calendar". Are you on Hero? Other?

I can see the google calendar and I can create events there or view the synced ones. Everything works perfectly there. I just can't make my own Google calendar the default

Apols, didn't say: yes, I have a Hero.
On the Hero, it's remembered next time. at least it is for me.

Calendar still does not sync
In spite of using the option to enter my calendar dates with my google account my Hero still will not upload dates to my google calendar. Google calendar does sync down to my Hero however. Is this something I'm doing wrong or is this a known problem?
works fine for me; the only issue is to ensure you're adding the event to the correct calendar, i.e. the Google one, not an Outlook one, or the local Hero one, with the latter being the default.
after I realised that, it's always worked for me.
yeah still not working. Very odd indeed.
Is it still a problem after installing the new ROM?
For me at least.
HOORAY!
Can confirm the problem - at least for my phone and several other Orange users...
As explained before, for each event you create, the calendar must be set to your google calendar (which you set up on installing the phone for the 1st time, or via settings).
Also, you must ensure that Orange haven't (in their infinite wisdom) set up a under 18 child protection thing on your account, because for some reason this stops the calendar on your Hero uploading data to Google!
I've switched this off and can now add (and delete) data on my Hero which syncs to my Google calendar with ease.
Another solution I have come across.
If you are using HTC ONE-x or similar, this could also be with any phone - your HTC will have it's own calendar + Google has its own as well. I have always used the HTC one, but this time I thought I will give the Google calendar a go. This is when the problems started, as I didnt like the Google Calendar and went back to the HTC, and every event I added on it - even though syncs with the Google calendar on the phone, it does not sync with Gmail online calendar.
So, I then added an event on my phone into the Google Calendar app and it synced. Now I am just coping all the events one by one from HTC calendar to Google. A bit annoying, but at least everything syncs.
Can't even switch the Google Calendar app off, as it deleted all the calendars from both HTC and Google.

Gaxaly S ii sync issue with google

Hi,
I am using the calender that came on my Samsung Galazy S 2. It worked fine for a few days. I transfered my paper diary onto the phone diary and syncd it with my google account and my facebook. First I had trouble with the facebook sync as, even though I had 'hide delined events' ticked it would not do so. This meant I just unchecked facebook in the 'Calenders' section and had nothing showing from facebook at all as my whole diary was spammed up with things I didn;t want in there I was not going to and could not get rid off. This fustrated me, but I put in things I wanted to go to maually and I thought it would be fine.
The real trouble started randomly one night when I went to look at my calender and everything had gone! I mean every event in the whole calender. I went online and checked and it was all on the online google calender. I re syncd my phone with google and it seemed to be ok, however it hadn't added all the events, some I had in 2012, such as holiday dates, had not been addded despite them being on google fine. So I re syncd to see if this would add the missing dates, however it just removed every event again!
I system restored the phone and tried starting again from scratch. We re syncd the phone and it did the whole thing over again. Also when we go into 'Settings' 'Calenders' it only shows 'my calender' and no google at all now.
What is going on! I am getting really fustrated as one of the main things I wanted to use my phone for was the calender fuction with the handy screen widgets. I have lost appointments that people have booked because of this (thankfully I keep a paper diary still out of fear of 'not being able to trust technology! haha :S)
Please any help would be greatly appreiciated as it's fustrating me to the point of taking the phone back to the shop and everything else with it is fine. I did ask in the shop for another question relating to the in phone fuctions and they were no help so I can't just go and ask them
Thank you in advance for any help,
Abbi
Program and version you use to access Google Calendar (e.g. Internet Explorer 7 or Outlook 2003): stock calender on galaxy s2. Have tried also jorte calender with the same problems.
Any Sync software you're using or have used (e.g. Google Calendar Sync): google calender sync, ical(but hadnt transfer it onto the phone)
If you're using the non-Apps version of Google Calendar (accessing from google.com/calendar/render) or you're on Google Apps: using the google online where all my diary dates have been stored.
If you have any Labs (and which ones) or Offline enabled: none
sorry for any bad grammer, spelling, written in an angry hurry!
Did you have any luck getting to the bottom of this?
My S2 has seemingly stopped syncing with Google calendar too. God knows why, I've installed various apps and updated the software via Kies recently....

[Q] regarding syncing contacts.

ok, i'm not normally one to have trouble with issues such as these, but this is my first android phone (htc evo 3d) and when i first got it on launch date, i manually entered all my contacts from my old phone to my new one. well i recently went through the root process and read that if you had your gmail account as the primary google account, that you wouldnt have to worry about your contacts anymore, after a wipe or changing to a new phone.
well after root i let the phone do all the gmail syncing after enabling it, and my contacts are still not there. i am having trouble getting into an option that will let me view or add or edit contacts from google. i go into accounts and sync, click my google account but all it will let me do is enable or disable the syncing of contacts. can someone give me a brief rundown of exactly how this works? and are my contacts all gone?
It works pretty much the way you described it; once you have the contacts in your phone you sync and they all get saved to your default gmail account. Then when/if you decide to wipe, you run sync again and they'll be uploaded to your phone.
This is what I'd do if I were you;
- Open gmail -> contacts and check if they are actually there.
- If your contacts are there, then maybe you don't have them set to shown in your phone display options under contacts.
thanks for the quick reply. when you say to open gmail, do you mean through the accounts and sync settings menu? or the gmail app? when i go through the accounts and sync, i just get the option of turning the syncing for each category (i.e. contacts, weather, news) on or off, i cant actually go into each one to see what they are comprised of. i feel pretty dumb not being able to figure this out, but i had over 100 peoples numbers and information on my contacts before i wiped and rooted my phone, so i'm willing to accept sounding like a noob in hopes of possibly getting them back.
thanks again in advance.
No problem at all No, I meant open it on your computer (http://www.google.com/contacts) and see if there are any in there.
Regarding display options; I don't know which phone you're using, but you get there by opening Contacts -> Display Options on my LG (http://www.shrani.si/f/30/1s/1KBZD0Ot/screenshot-1314442655693.png a screenshot of how it might look like if it's of any help)

[Q] How do I enable/restore calender again when disabling it deleted it?

I seem to have deleted my Google calender (or some part of it) from my android (specs below). I can’t seem to be able to restore it.
I had problems syncing a new calender and was trying to clear all cache etc in order to get it to sync. I went into Settings --> applications --> All --> ‘Calendar’ (I’ve always had two of those, so I took the one with data in it, the other always stands on 0.0B).
I cleared the data, force stopped it and then I pushed Disable. The button went from disable to enable and I restarted my phone thinking I could enable it after restart. After reboot the calendar had disappeared. Meaning: no icon in the ‘applications’ screen, when I go into the settings menu I only have one post named ‘calendar’ (the empty one). Calendar Storage still has content though and when I use widgets they seem to be able to access and sync to my main Google calender. When I use ‘month’ view I can see the different events I have in my calendar but I can’t edit anything from my phone. As soon as I try to actually access it I get the message ‘Unfortunately, TwLauncher has stopped’.
How do I restore, or enable the Calender again? I find it really disturbing that I don’t have a calender icon in ‘application’ anymore and that it seems to have completely disappeared.
I’ve tried clearing data, experimenting with the sync option and rebooting several times. I just can’t seem to get any results though. And I can't find it on play so I can't re-install it. Any insight on this?

First check via Google mail/calendar if u see ur appointments...
If u don't see it there, they wasn't saved it Google account and so just local, which u delete (no restore)
If u see them there, just delete and reactivate ur Google account on ur phone.

Might have worked had it been a sync problem only (my calendar is intact on the web). This however is a problem of the built-in calendar app disappearing. I removed the account and installed it again but the calendar did not appear.
I'm starting to think that factory reset is the only viable option.

Hmm but that's a bit much for just probs like this...
Hmm u checked the options in application > all > calendar and delete data again?
Then also checked if calendar sync is active (I think so but just an idea)
So last option before factory reset would be wiping the dalvik cache
If at all now luck... U can do it.
But would be really strange.
Much success ;-)

Lost Calendar Events
Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have a similar issue/problem
I was syncing and unsyncing with my samsung to google calendars, then the next day I checked, I realized all my events disappeared.
I did not erase anything yet all my events were gone.
I did notice that something was occurring during the period that I lost my data.
I saw that my default Samsung browser on my smart phone went on a refresh loop on google home page. This was an issue on googles end and was resolved eventually.
This was one of google's problems. There would be an issue with google recognizing me logging on the google home page and gmail. This lasted for a week. I wonder if that caused my data to disappear?
There are a few links below describing what happened. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Google, samsung+google, or syncing in general.
if I can recover my lost events that would be great!
It seems like a lot of them has to do with smartphones syncing, which is what I did. Even if there isn’t a solution or a recovery for this, it would be great to at least get an understanding as to why this happened (so i can avoid it in the future). I am currently storing everything local to my phone and havne’t experienced any loss of information. It’s quite disconcerting that if I did use google calendars, at any moment, all my events can go missing.

Restore a recent backup, that way the period of events lost will be minimal; only events entered/altered after the time of the backup, obviously (and you can then sync to Google if you like to bring that back up to date).
So far as recovering your lost events goes, I doubt Google will restore an individuals calendar events. Tho you might as well ask them, they might surprise you. That way you then simply restore them to your phone.
Failing that, unless you've got a copy of the db file containing the calendar events still on the phone, can't see how you'd get them back unfortunately.
As to why, I'd be asking Google. I've been keeping my phone/Google calendar synced a couple of times a day over the year and a bit I've had my SGS2 & never had a problem from their end (a couple very early doors caused by me when I had to reset my phone & I hadn't synced to Google before doing the reset).
Thanks Mistah. Unfortunately I didnt make any backups with TiBu or a nandroid at that time.
I've asked google and you are correct, they dont do event restores.
Yes definitely my main concern is why it happened at all? So it never happened to you?....hmmm..
im wondering if it was something on Google's part or something I did.
Before I realized my calendar disappeared, I unsynched and erased the profile on my device so it only had the local calendar, then i synced again.
I wonder if my erasing that profile on my samsung caused the calendar to delete. Or maybe it didn't register or save?
I can't 100% recall if I saved the events on google's calendar or my local. but if I stored on my local, shouldnt the data still be there even after my sync and unsync or google calendar?

Yep. If you remove the Google a/c from your phone completely, it deletes the events attached to that Google a/c in the calendar app. When you add it back, you'll have an empty calendar until you sync it from Google.
So essentially, what's seemed to have happened is you've done that with the a/c on your phone, for whatever reason your events @ Google's end have been nuked, so when you've re-added the a/c back on your phone & gone to sync it, there's been nothing there to sync back to the phone.
If you untick 'show [email protected]' in the calendar app settings (as opposed to removing the a/c outright), exit the app & restart the app you end up with an empty calendar, because it must have a Google a/c linked. If you retick 'show [email protected]' your events show again because simply unticking it doesn't delete anything.
Removing the a/c outright from the phone must purge the DB file(s) (?? I presume) on the phone.
That's the most logical explanation I can come up with given what happened/the order it happened in with your phone.

I just tried it again. I removed the account from my phone. then resynced it. All the info from the calendar is still there.
Currently i store everything locally and only view local calendar (as you've said, untick google calendar).
Also not sure if this matters, I'm not using google calendars, I'm using samsung's stock calendar planner.
I cant see how removing the account from ur handheld would erase all events from your calendar. Isn't removing the account just deciding not to sync with it?

ya, it was worth a shot to test out that theory.
back to square one i guess.
google is blaming on samsung's app causing the erase when syncing.

[A] Disable Google Contacts Sync & Force Store Locally in ICS

Reclaim your Contacts !
Actually turned out simpler to do than i initially thought it would be.
Enables "Keep Locally" ( keep_local ) option for adding new contacts instead of forced google account.
Prevents google from deleting all you contacts when you remove your account
Disables google contact sync
The offending package comes with gapps if you got google that way.
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk you will find it in /system/app/ (need root file explorer to see it though)
You can make this fix in 3 ways, the first may not need root but i cant test as my phone is rooted.
In Settings>App find it in the list of all installed apps, click it, click disable. (please someone tell me if they can do this without root)
Use a root file explorer such as "Root Browser", navigate to /system/app/ backup the app .apk to your sdcard for example, then delete it.
You can also try clicking the app .apk in "Root Browser" and choose uninstall, but i could get this to work.
Thats it ! , no need to reboot. Enjoy
(to test it worked, just navigate to Settings>Accounts>(your google account) and you will see there is no longer the option to sync contacts)
:highfive:
replacing it

:highfive:

What would be the thing to replace this with? It's important to have something as convenient as what we're replacing. You can export you contacts to a single .vcf file. This can then be bluetoothed over to your desktop, uploaded to a server or transferred by USB or sdcard but what we really want is something as convenient as Google Contacts which syncronises to a place/server that you control automatically and easily.
Not sure if there's an alternative app out there though for this?
There's Go Contacts, ContactMoney and alternative dialers but I don't think these have alternative sync methods.
I think I'd prefer something from the fDroid/homebrew/commandline way. Perhaps a SyncML solution, or just something that automates the process of exporting contacts, encrypting them with a basic password and uploading to dropbox or an email address.
i was thinking the same thing, like ftp/sftp backup. it could be done pretty easily but i may not be the person to do it , i havent looked around though and suspect there may already be something already that could do this...
btw, yes i love f-droid too and recommend everyone to install its repo browser app and check out whats on offer.

In f-droid you find funambol (syncML), LDAP Sync and aCal (CardDAV).
I don't use any of them (to lazy to set up a server) but with some effort you should be able to make contact-sync work for you.

I purged GoogelContactsSync and GoogleCalendarSync from my device.
For syncing I use SyncMate(free), which I found pretty convenient.
hotmail/corporate sync
This worked fabulously till i decide to use a Hotmail account (with the stock email app), from that moment on the problem reappeared, just instead of trying to store the contacts in gmail, it now tries to store in Hotmail/corporate account!!!!
Has Google hired all the stupid developers that Microsoft fired??? Microsoft is becoming famous for it ability to consider their clients stupid and the attitude: when-know-what-you-want-better-than-you, now Google seems to be going with the same mentality!
Any idea how to stop this on the hotmail account?
p.s. my only workaround was to use the Hotmail app instead of the stock email app, unfortunately the Hotmail app (Microsoft, remember?) thinks i will never need to see any email older than 30 days?!?!?! WTF???

I use MyPhoneExplorer - it syncs my local contacts to my Thunderbird and vice versa. It syncs calendar events too ... so eventually I've got a copy and it's all local. One thing it doesn't do is contacts photos, so I also use SuperBackup to make a copy on my SD card (this way I can get the pictures up quickly).
When contacts are in Thunderbird (I've created there an address book just for syncing the phone) I can re-arrange, edit, etc. and when syncing back the pictures are retained ... Then I do SuperBackup to have a copy of new phone book with pictures.
Regards,...

This little app will do the trick:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fjsoft.mylocalaccount
After you install it, go to Accounts and create one "MyLocalAccount". After that, all you have to do is to transfer your contacts from the Google account into the "Local contacts" account just created. You can do this with the built-in Export/Import contacts tool.
f . . k the google, they work for attack to our privacy only :\
Hi, i want to reverse this topic
sync google accounts
It's been a while since I've been through this, but unfortunately I have a similar problem. My problem is "Google account" in accounts and sync. But I can only select google photos when I click on the sync mark. No selection box for contacts. How can I fix that?
The device has clone s3 and ics 4.0.4 on it. The gapps packages available for this release also do not work. It does not synchronize people in any case. I cleaned the data from the applications, I deleted Accounts.db and reinstalled it.
Finally, I found the following lines for Accounts.xml and added it, but still there is no positive situation. What else can I do? Thank you.
Syncable = "true"> <authority id = "3" account = ".." type = "com.google" authority = "com.android.contacts"
<PeriodicSync period = "86400" />
</ Authority>
