[Q] where is the splash image located? - HTC EVO 3D

What's the directory/name of the splash image (not boot animation, b4 that)? Is it possible to just use es file explorer and replace that file to change splashes?

Does that mean renaming it to PC86IMG or whatever and flashing via hboot?

Yes. That is the only way to do it. And it will stay that image no matter what rom/kernel you flash until you change it thru bootloader again.

to more directly answer this question, the splash image is located in a special portion of internal memory. it is not directly accessible from normal android mode or from recovery mode, at least as far as anybody as found.
the only known method of access to this restricted portion of dedicated internal memory which holds the splash image is thru fastboot mode and the fastboot binary.
on other older devices, like the samsung moment, the splash image was/is stored on internal memory in a dedicated partition, but it was write accessible from android mode and recovery mode. this made it much easier to modify and change which facilitated the ability for an android app, Flash Image GUI, I created to help thru this process.
unfortunately there haven't been anyways found yet to access the splash image on the evo 3d other than thru fastboot. i do think it would be great if there was a way found one day!
hope that helps add some clarity!

is it pC86img or pG86img? Every thread i review seems to have something different.
Also, I can confirm paste new hTC_bootanimation.zip over the original doesnt work. I did a NAND and tried it when i made my boot animation (death of megatron/birth of galvatron FTW) and now it displays the HTC logo but just the initial still frame.
Why are so many things you flash or load through bootloader named PG/PC86IMG lol. I've always been hesitant on account of that. Does bootloader look inside the zip and place it in the appropriate slot based on name or something?
Thanks!

Short answer: Yes. The bootloader looks for specific file names inside of the .zip file to know which partition to flash them too.
Longer answer: HTC designed the bootloader/fastboot/radio to have the most write access to the internal partitions. Recovery and normal android mode also have write access (unlocked bootloader, custom recovery needed, etc) but the bootloader/radio/fastboot have the most access.
Since the bootloader/radio/fastboot have the most access to the internal partitions, it is sometimes regarded as the best way to flash certain partitions of the phone and hence why there are so many different .zip files available!
Hope that helps!

@JoeyKrim:
Thanks. I was familiar with PG86IMG and its options and assumed PC was just a typo. I only seen PC on splash screen how to posts and assumed it was wrong...or i misunderstood since everything flashed through hboot seems to be named PG86IMG (i think even the 4G was that way..been a while). I'm trying to learn more with this phone so I've been reading up a lot. Many smart people on this forum so it only makes sense. I like to know as much as I can about what is really going on behind the scenes before I take any action...just seems logical. Trying to graduate from a mere flash-a-holic =-)
So the take away here is that anything flashed via fastboot/hboot is PG86IMG.zip and hboot/fastboot is smart enough to look at the folder structure within the zip and fine the appropriate partition to write to without user intervention. Good to know. I've done many things with my phone but I usually tried to leave hboot/fastboot alone due to my lack of understanding.
Sidenote: I love your projects. Thanks for all the hard work

I think the EVO bootloader used files named PC36IMG.zip. It is up to HTC. They can program the bootloader to use files named whatever they want.
the way to determine the file name the bootloader is searching for: when first booting into the bootloader it will print out on the screen (sometimes quickly) the file names it is searching for. these names will be the correct names as they are hard coded into the bootloader and very rarely change.
appreciate the support and hope the above helps provide more detail! good luck on your progression and feel free to ask questions as they come!

@Joey: Thanks again for the insight man!
@OP: Sorry for taking the thread into a little tangent. Hopfully it helped provide more detail for some of those looking deeper into the process.

no, splash can't be overwritten on hboot 1.5 sadly, and you wouldn't brick if you flashed, it just wouldn't apply the image.

Maybe soff will come soon now that GSM e3d got hboot downgrade and soff then problem solved splash for all =-)

^by the way...
all of this, one of the reasons why i am not a flashoholic when it comes to the splash screen. if something goes wrong, you get a bad download, etc., you can brick the device. i don't justify the risk for an image that simply appears for merely 3 or 4 seconds at boot up.

An issue I've come across.

Maybe I'm just terrible at searching, but I've looked on this site, Google, and some other Android site, but haven't found an answer that works. Basically I regret rooting my phone... but that isn't the whole issue...
So I rooted yesterday. I have an HTC Evo 3d GSM HBOOT 1.49.0008 (berfore my root). I got ROM Manager and made a backup of my rom giving it a custom name. From here I went and downloaded High ROM 3D v1.1.
I decided I didn't like that rom so I tryed to restore my backup rom... md5 mismatch... or some crap like that. I tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976453
I kept getting "invalid command" or some crap like that...
All I want right now is to somehow go back to my factory settings un-rooted... Is this possible, or am I screwed?
Hopefully I'm not making a duplicate thread... If I am I'm sorry, I honestly did search for a good couple hours.
Thanks for any help!
if yu are trying to get back to stock download an ruu file if its the "exe file then make sure to relock phone first or it wont work"; and if its the flashable zip just super wipe and install via recoveryhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334473

Search isn't everyone's friend, its not mine. You need to run an ruu.exe, I don't know where to find a gsm one, I'm cdma. But I've gone back to stock a few times, just relock the device and run the ruu from unlit and you should be good.
@jwolf1: That says CDMA. MY Evo 3d is GSM.
@xcpefrmreality: I'm still really new to all this. What is an ruu.exe? What is unlit? I'll see if I can find out anything in the mean time!

If that ruu is a .exe file then you need to go to hboot, relock, run ruu.exe from the computer while still in hboot. If its a .zip then you'll have to extract the images and flash them one at a time from fastboot.
Okay! Sweet! Once I can actually download the file I'll do that!
Once I finish installing the file will I still be rooted?
Will it be safe to do a factory reset at that time?
I just wanna start from a clean slate.
Somewhat of an off topic question... but... Is it safe to delete EVERYTHING off my SD card? Because I know that there is alot of junk that has been left over from random apps haha!

No you won't be rooted after an ruu.
Yes, its safe to factory reset, but the ruu will do that for you.
Yes, its safe to wipe the sd, just do it before you run the ruu.

You could do it after the ruu but it'll erase android secure folder and a couple of others that the ruu puts on there. It'll just have to rebuild those folders when you reboot.

It was doing that to me the other night, I tried the download from my phone and it worked.
I managed to get a slot!
The file I'm downloading is an .exe.
Will I need to have USB debugging enabled, and fastboot disabled to do this? I'll also need to have disk mode enabled correct?
I read something about a PG86IMG.zip file. Will I need that too?

I believe you need USB debugging to do adb commands. Turn it on just in case. You're getting the .exe so just hold volume down and power with the phone off, select fastboot, plug in USB to phone and comp, type fastboot OEM lock, it should reboot you back to hboot and it'll say relocked with a security warning under the word relocked, don't reboot. Now just start the ruu.exe in windows and follow the prompts. That's it.
Edit.... Just re read the op and noticed your hboot version. I guess you used revolutionary and not htcdev. I'm not sure about how to s-on, so the fastboot OEM lock probably won't work. Maybe someone that knows about that will chime in.

[S-OFF ONLY!][DEV][USER]Flashing Splash Screens via Recovery

Special thanks to nolimitzr2 for testing!
Info:
The splash screen is stored as its own partition like a boot image. The splash screen is located at mmcblk0p14. This means that we can use the executable dd to modify the splash screen from recovery. This is S-OFF only!
What is new about this?
Right now, the splash screen needs to be flashed via PH98IMG.zip or fastboot. This isn't quite as convenient as flashing via recovery. With this, you could store several that you enjoy on your SD card and quickly swap between them via recovery rather than loading up a new PH98IMG.zip or fastboot whenever you want to switch.
How to use:
1. Download template zip file.
2. Put the splash screen you want named splash1.img in the splash folder in the zip file. Use 7zip to drag and drop it in.
3. Flash in recovery.
I nor anyone else are responsible for damage to your device.
edit: also to rom devs, please don't abuse this and brand everyone's phone to your rom if they don't want it.

Anything is possible, but it is likely a bad flash would just yield a bad looking splash screen. However if it was having trouble booting because of it, you could likely get into hboot to reflash one via hboot since the splash doesn't load before directly booting to hboot.

[Q] Rezound Stuck At Lock Screen

Hi,
I am new here and this is my first post so forgive me if starting a new thread for this topic was wrong but I found my own situation slightly different from the others here who had the same problem.
I have a gsm unlocked rezound and was trying to get rid of the unknown sim error message at lock screen. I followed the steps mentioned on this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882355. I rooted the phone, downloaded the apk. Deleted the .odex file and replaced the existing apk with the downloaded one and rebooted. Now, I am stuck at the lock screen with no icons. But for the other people who faced similiar issue, they were able to open the home screen. I can't. I can see pop ups for sms/mail. I get ring when a call comes in but I cant pick. I tried hard reset. Tried booting without sim/sd card. Still no luck. I tried connecting the phone to my pc but now my pc wont recognise the phone when its connected. I can see icon on top of the phone which says USB connected and I also see sync icon, but it will not go any further. I dont know how to get into the phone's menu now.
I may have bitten more than I can chew, silly me :crying:
If you guys can help me in any way, I would appreciate that a lot.
OS : 4.0.3 ICS Running HTC Sense 3.6.
A quick fix:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017932
Flash my debloater, choosing the Sense option(will be brought to a widget removal screen if you don' use them all) & AOSP lockscreen. Disadvantage to that though, you will have to unlock to see the caller id when it rings.

Thank you for the quick response. I have downloaded the file. I know this sounds stupid but I am a real rookie. I don't know how to do the flashing or how to get to the AOSP lock screen. If you could guide me through the process or maybe give me a link where I can learn it myself, it would be great.
Essentially since you already have rooted, you will(should) also have a custom recovery (TWRP, AmonRa, CWM). Install it as you would a regular rom but without any wipes until after flash of the zip. Dependent on which recovery you will want to look up their FAQ/QnA on how to wipe dalvik/cache.
Once you get inside the script, you will see what I meant by "Choose Sense & AOSP Lockscreen".

Yes the phone was rooted, but I used a rooting software from google apps from the phone. After I downloaded that app, it rooted the phone and brought in an extra icon. I remember it as SU root something, but I didnt do it from the pc. So I dont have any recovery on the pc. I used to sync the phone with htc sync. Unfortunately, right now, my pc wont recognise the phone. I tried root explorer for android from pc, it wont recognise the device. HTC sync too will not. But my phone seems to know when a USB is connected, it brings the usb icon on top but thats about it. ((
Ok, best suggestion at this point is to follow the instruction in the OP for installing TWRP in the Rezound development section.

Thank you for the help buddy. I am glad you said its not. I dont know what I would have done if it had. This is my first android phone and I took it a week back. I was beginning to miss my iPhone . Unfortunately the link you provided wont help me because I have no way of restarting phone other than by removing battery. Even when in fastboot, the pc does not recognise the device even when device shows fastboot usb. I doubt if I can get past step 1 in that link.
I found that I am on Vigor H Boot 2.27.000 and Radio 2.22.10.0803r with S-ON. I tried to turn S-Off after reading and educating myself on android from this forum till now. But even to S-Off, I need to be able to enable USB in debug mode which I am not able to. Any suggestions ?

hi,
I took the phone to a couple of places to check if it can be fixed, No one was able to fix it thus far, Any other advice or suggestions to fix this would be great. Any admins/mods have something to add ? Please, I am desperate to fix this phone. Anyway of doing this ?
Have you tried flashing a different rom?

From what they posted, somehow they don't have a custom recovery even though they are rooted?
Can you put a PH98IMG.zip file of a recovery (either Amon Ra or TWRP) on your SD card and flash it in hboot? Then flash a custom ROM the same way from recovery.
You can take the SD card out and mount it on your pc and use your pc to copy over the recovery PH98IMG.zip file.
And oh yeah, I see what Obaterista... was saying. You should be able to flash the latest RUU from hboot. Here's a link for it:

Are you trying with the stock ROM ? If ure saving stock ROM as PH98IMG.zip, then try PH98IMG without the .zip typed in.

What you'll have to do is relock your boot loader, flash the RUU and then unlock again. From there you should be able to flash a recovery and flash a rom.

Thanks a tonne. That helped. I am back in the menu now. I am so grateful for ure help. But my problems dont seem to end just yet. Now, my htc sync wont detect the phone. The phone is relocked. I will try unlocking and see if it works, but is that the cause ?

[Q] Htc Evo 4g Lte boot animation/ splash screen

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and looking for some answers about my phone. I am NOT a tech guy, but I rooted my Sprint HTC Evo 4g LTE recently, because I wanted to use my 32 Gb SD card to partition off 4 Gb of memory and turn it into more RAM. Unfortunately, I could not figure out how to make that work (anyone know a current, up-to-date walk-through for that procedure, I would be grateful). But I am now interested in finding a way to cure my phone of the hideous stock splash screen and boot animation, without flashing a new ROM or whatever. Apparently, from what I can gather, the new 4g LTE's boot directly from the "boot image", so if you change out the SPC_bootanimation (for example), or rename it, when you reboot, it reboots from the boot image and not from the files that were altered. This sucks. There must be a workaround for this that does not involve a noob like me trying to mess around with flashing a new ROM. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys!
Check the Themes and Apps section
No luck

Could not find a post that addresses this particular issue. What I need is someone that knows what they are talking about to tell me if flashing a new ROM on my phone is the ONLY option, if I want to change/remove the stock boot animation/splash. I have tried several different methods, but no matter what I try, when I reboot all the file alterations I make are removed, as the boot image is used to mirror all "system" files.

There should be some boot ani zips in Themes and apps and most likely the reason they won't stay with the ani you pick is because HTC has made it harder to modify our phones by locking down the ability to write to system.
As for the splash screen you need to be S-OFF to change splash screens.
S-OFF will most likely fix the boot ani from changing also

Just so I am completely clear on the process of installing your boot animations -- I have a rooted (S-ON) HTC Evo 4g LTE, Hardware Version 0003, Software Version 3.16.651.3 71ORD, Android Version 4.1.1, HTC sense version 4+, HTC SDK API level 4.63, PRI Version 2.97_003, PRL version 25015 (I list all of this information because I am not really clear on what is relevant to this particular issue). Now, am I correct in my understanding that if I download the list of plug-ins you provided, and then download the animation zip file (and I am not clear exactly where I need to place this file after I download it), that is all there is to it? Do I need to download Cinema4d, or any other program to make this work? And how does this take care of the problem of the phone rebooting from the boot image and replacing the bootanimation.zip I install? Every time I install bootanimation.zip, when I reboot, all my work is erased with the original boot image. Does one of these plug-ins take care of this problem?
Thank you
Yo need to get s-off to do the changes that you want, since you are s-on and running 3.16 that prevents you from making any changes to the system, just Google about that issue and you should find lots of info about it, flar2 found a way to bypass that and and with his Kernels allowed the s-on users to do things like what you are trying to get done, go get s-off and you should be able to change anything you want on your phone without any issues, since you are on 3.16 look for moonshine in the original development thread for this phone... And... Good Luck!

OK, from what I can determine, the Moonshine procedure for S-Off on my HTC 3.16 is beyond my technical capabilities. I do not understand several of the steps involved in the walkthrough, so that probably means I should not be messing around with it. And if I understand this correctly, with the phone rooted with S-On, I will be unable to download any updates to firmware/software that HTC might release in the future. And in order to unroot my phone, I need to get S-off. So, I guess I will just suck it up and endure the hideous boot animation, since apparently I have no realistic option that does not involve jumping through absurdly elaborate technical hoops just to change my boot animation (which is exactly what HTC was counting on when they designed 3.16, I am assuming). And when the new updates come out for my phone, I will determine if they are worth learning the necessary technical expertise required to S-off my phone to unroot and download updates. If any of you experts find any of this to be inaccurate or otherwise incorrect, please feel free to educate me. I am a stranger in a strange land with all this android/Linux stuff -- my tech world has always revolved around Windows.
Thanks for all the help guys!
Moonshine is windows friendly as far as I know, you just have to use cmd as an administrator and its fully automated if you have the right drivers, just read the op and follow the instructions to the dot, you should be able to do it, don't be scared, there is nothing that you can break that someone in this forum can help you to fix! Good luck!

[Q] Stock RUU failed and won't work; basically locked out of phone. Can you help?

Hello. Never made a thread before and was really hoping I wouldn't have to or would find an answer elsewhere.
Since that didn't work out, here's my problem:
Background: Evo 3d, virgin mobile, unlocked bootloader, s-off, hboot was at 1.50, and I don't remember what the radio was at. I was running CM11 and was quite happy until two days ago when I stopped receiving texts! No clue why, just stopped. Hangouts, etc etc. Called VM and they had no idea why that was happening either. Tried switching roms, reinstalling backups, etc etc. Clean wipes and all. Then I saw someone said they had to [for some reason] reinstall everything stock and then they had messaging back. So that's what I set out to do.
In Between: Used the RUU that I'm fairly certain came with my phone. Everything was good, it erased everything, and "updated system" and signatures. It was almost finished when BAM, popped up with error 152 Image Update Error; right at the very end. Quite disappointing. Tried it multiple times again with the same result. Not sure what to do.
Current: Only screen I can see (looks like shortened bootloader screen) says "***locked***" at the top, hboot 1.57.0000, radio 1.06.00.126, then says openADSP-v02.6.0.2226.00.0217eMMc-boot
Also tried flashing the unlock_code.bin, and while it took it, it changed nothing. One screen I did see very briefly but cannot replicate said that everything was there except system. Not really sure how to take that or what to do. Any and all help would be helpful. As is it sits on the HTC screen with exclamation points in each corner. When unplugged from usb it gives me that above screen. Removing battering and restarting to bootloader still gives the same screen.
Did you run ruu through windows or pg86img.zip?

You can try this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4baafpgchgg4ef/ruu-PG86IMG.zip
Put that on the root of your SD card and rename to pg86img.zip
Make sure its the only one there
Boot to boot loader and accept updates
It may reboot itself to bootloader, if it asks to accept again then accept
When its done reboot your phone
Rename or remove the file when done
Hope that helps

So I have my phone working now. I think it was the RUU.exe that I was using. I downloaded a different one from here http://androidruu.com/Shooter/ after much googling. That finally restored it to original VM stock rom etc. I couldn't use your method of placing the zip onto the root of my SD because despite it being there, it wouldn't go through the normal search for the file. I would remove the battery, put it back in, use the button key combo to try and open to bootloader, and it would go but it would be the page with the status and then it would instantly go back to the black screen with HTC logo.
Thank you for your help though!
Also I'm not sure how useful exactly this will be for anyone else, but if you find yourself ruu'd and needing better files...
The hboot ENG 1.04 I got from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817513
ALL other downloads of that hboot did not work AT ALL.
I got the updated radio from here: http://androidforums.com/cdma-evo-3d-all-things-root/648902-radios-hboot-firmware-all-downloads.html
The hboots on that site however are stock and most likely won't run the custom roms as well, if at all, as 1.04.

Hey, that's my thread. Just curious what you mean by the hboots aren't helpful?
If there is a problem I'm unaware of, I'd be happy to know what it is so I can get it squared away.

I must apologize! I seem to have mis stated that; they are helpful with regards to them being the stock hboots. However in my particular case those stock hboots weren't for me. I'll edit that here in a sec, but if I was going back to full stock I'd definitely use your stock VM hboot and it would be helpful in that case. Hope that makes sense, no disrespect meant!

Thanks for clarifying that! I see what you meant now.
No worries, I didn't take offense or think you were disrespectful; I just wanted to make sure the downloads were working properly!
And for the record, the stock hboots will work just fine with custom roms. Hboot 1.50 for example will be compatible with the same selection of roms as JuopunutBear 1.50.5050. The difference is that JuopunutBear is patched and will allow for extra fastboot commands and allow them to be run on a locked bootloader.
The eng 1.04 hboot allows for extra fastboot commands that the stock hboot cannot. But you can boot any rom out there on the stock hboots. I've used stock 1.50 forever on this device.
