Wifi Sharing + Battery Loss + OSX - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, so I've already read the threads about Wifi Sharing dominating the SGS2's battery and it seems like updating the firmware of the phone somehow fixes this.
So heres my problem: I'm on OSX and I can't use Samsung Kies. I can actually use Kies AIR but I can't seem to figure out how to update the firmware.
Apparently my firmware is "KG2" so I'm wondering how I could update my firmware without access to a windows machine. In case I'm already on the latest firmware (which seems logical since I just bought the phone like a week ago), is there any way to stop Wifi Sharing from starting every time I enable Wifi?
I would really appreciate a solution that didn't involve Rooting.
Thank's a bunch guys!

i am afraid without root you wont be able to acces or disable any system file mate.
the only way is rooting (or wait ages for update - oficialone) - if you arent sure what to do ask and u will get help. there are more apps that may produce high battery drain from stock.

So is my version the latest? Also, Why would this be fixed in a previous version but then back again in a latest?

i am running KH3 that is the latest firmware i know. KG2 can be the latest released by your network provider. so if u wanna keep the phone with the latest u can upgrade with ODIN or once u will flash CWM - clockworkmode u can do so with it. but u will need to root the phone ofc.
but KG2 is not the latest for unlocked simfree phone.
wifi sharing is a high battery drainer - and i have removed that form my phone also togheter with the samsung HUBS and a bit more. and i am getting more then double out of my phone compared to stock i was running before mate.

I see. Thanks for the replies!

what exactly did you remove as i see 3 thing relating to wifi sharing

[Q] How do I get 2.3.4 without rooting

I don't want to look so dumb asking this, I've seen all the instructions to root and upgrade, just don't want to do it this way (I'm afraid I'll mess something up), but I've seen some comments on doing this via Kies air. I connected with Kies air and I don't see any options to upgrade. If anyone has the patience to show or explain it to me, I will really appretiate it.
My SGS2 is unlocked, I live In Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, running Gingerbread 2.3.3 and it works really good, but I want he upgrade for the fixes that it brings, specially the battery life fix. Also tried to register with the Samsung's "Check for update", where they ask you to register and, in my case, it says "invalid email address", I try the 4 different ones I have numerous times having the same result, I don't know if this will cause not to get the update.
Thx in advanced,
Guillermo
Without rooting you say?
emm...
Oh I know! Buy a Nexus S!
kies air is a way of accessing data on your phone wirelessly, you need to download samsung kies from the site.
it is a standalone piece of software that allows you to backup and most importantly update firmware!

You don't need to root to flash.
Use odin to flash a 2.3.4 stock rom. Although it's almost the same procedure as rooting
to make the the wording clear: Rooting means to get access to your root-directory and it gives you some admin rights you don't have on a "non-rooted phone".
Flashing is just the action of transferring firmware(the software which gives you a user-interface (GUI) to your phone on top of the hardware). This means, you can FLASH a soft/firmware with or without rooting or beeing rooted at the first place.
To do this you need a management/flashing software. Here at this forum "ODIN" is ver common. There are other tools to do this including hardware supported boards with ROM modules/burners(as used by the service centers).
For you this all means: forget all about rooting; just flash the firmware, which you prefer to have on your phone. There are many helpfiles on this forum for doing so.
Good luck

[Q] Running slow after 2.3.3 kies update

Ok so I decided to wait for the official uk update to gingerbread through kies to see what it was like. However so far I think the phone was faster on 2.2.1, after the update it just feels really laggy. So what should I do to get the phone running smooth and quicker??
I have tried a couple of task killers but most seem to work for a second then the apps start running again. Should I consider flashing to a custom rom instead, or can I go back to 2.2.1 without flashing??
Either way so far I have found no real improvement in the official 2.3.3 update, if anything its worse.
Any advice would be great, thanks
Froyo better than gingerbread
got to agree with v28,since official update the lock screen takes ages to get to the unlock slide screen, cant send texts with 3g enabled, all screens seem slower than before & battery life seems worse.Has anybody seen an improvement since the upgrade, also does anybody know how to go back to froyo.or is the unofficial kpn/kph better....OR can the guys at cyanogen hurry up
In my opinion, Samsung Official 2.3.4 Gingerbread update is much better than its earlier (OLD) releases.

The unofficial kpn/kph is better
a little advice, any task killer is unnesessary on android. if stability/speed/improvement is what u want, task killer wouldnt do any good. infact it make things worse. dont treat linux like windows
Ok so as 2.3.4 is not an official update in the uk yet thats not an option. So if I do flash then what rom is best? Has the least bugs and isn't going to leave me with no wi-fi or camera?
Also what should you use to stop all these background memory munching things if not a task killer??
thanks
theres no such thing as "the best rom". its based on ur preference really.
as i said before, dont treat linux like windows
android has its own way of managing task/resource. using task killer would interfere with that behavior resulting in much problem. if u that worried about those background running process, use titanium backup to freeze them
Ok thanks i'll give it a try. Sorry for all the questions just new to all this and the phone's performance seems to have got worse with uk official update.
thanks again
Also does the phone have to be rooted to use titanium, if so how do I root 2.3.3? And if I'm rooting should I just flash it at the same time? Any recommended roms?
thanks

2.3.3 updateHi
Hi Im just curious as to what the official update for uk is i.e what number kpn kph ??,as i dont seem to be able to get an update,,when using kies on 2.2.1 i still get the no software update message meaning im on the latest,,although goin by your comments maybe im not missing anything special anyway,,also can anyone recomend which of the updates on samfirmware would be best for me in britain,,
thanks in advance
cheers Norrie
So far I would say stick with 2.2.1 untill they improve the current 2.3.3. My phone is saying PDA:KPN PHONE:KP6 CSC:KP1 (CPW) Baseband S5830XWKP6. I had a problem getting the update also, found I had to reinstall kies of samsung website under software for galaxy ace. I also had to change norton antivirus to full permission for samsung update.
Hope this helps, but all I have seen is change in battery icon at the top and the phone running much slower.
much slower is u just use stock, try custom rom. maybe u will be surprise
btw i also need to say this, kies is crap odin is far better in any way by miles
Decided to stick with stock rom in the end(as unsure which custom rom to choose) and hope for an update from samsung. Have factory reset the phone and just turning background data on and off as I need it. Also no longer using a task killer just samsungs own programme monitor. Still lags on unlock but deffinatly running better.
Not finding it quicker like some others are on about though

[Q] software update not available in kies?

hello!
I have a little problem with my phone/kies. so I wanted to upgrade my OS to ICS (it says ICS is available on the gsm arena website, can't link) after hours of trying to make it connect (turns out USB debugging had to be off) I found out that apparently there is no software update available. screenshot:
OK, I can't post pictures yet, so type the imgur website and add /TsfuB.png if you want to see a screenshot.
it's rooted, and the only other weird thing is that upon booting, there is always a yellow warning triangle on the first screen, since I bought it, before root or anything. I got it "1.5 handed" (someone got it from an "unwanted upgrade", like a reward you get from a company with points and such, didn't want it, and sold it quite cheaply with it only having been turned on once. the battery was still in it's packaging)
I also have some experience from upgrading ROMs the hard way, with my Toshiba folio 100, but I'm a little more scared with this phone, witch is actually useful with its stock ROM.
current android version according to settings menu: 2.3.4. is this the latest release you can upgrade from Kies?
I hope I have provided enough info
thanks in advance!
Read the stikies guides for using Odin to flash the stock ROM. you will learn every thing to fix your phone in 1 hour max.

thanks, but is there no way to do it with Kies? I'd prefer to use that, but if it's really necessary, I'll use Odin.

depends of the firmware you have on that phone is correct for your region and you say upon booting you have to yellow triangle means the user has flashed something already on it as you have root already guessing it has a insecure kernel or CF Root kernel if want to flash stock roms check out Intratech thread here and if you want a custom stock rom for ics go here and use neats all is stock with root and no fancy stuff done click here!!
hope this helps p.s also kies is **** only use it to add usb drivers then remove it more hassle then its worth and can cause issues with odin

Are they saying an upgrade for your individual phone ????
Check your phone provider has upgraded to ICS ..
Kies failing then if the firmware is on the server use CHECKFUS to download and install .
Not on the server then your phone has not yet been upgraded ,

the phone was not rooted when I got it, and I'm not sure about a custom ROM, it looks normal.
also, I live in South Africa, and apparently you need a separate ROM for that. all I found for south Africa under officials ROMs is the following:
XWKF3
Firmware info
PDA:XWKF3
PHONE: XXKE7
I have no idea what those seemingly random capital letters and numbers mean. it doesn't give the android version, so...

[Q] Just got an OTA for spanish 4.1.2

Hey guys, I just did an OTA sw update (spanish official 4.1.2 rom, rooted & no other modifications).
Since it didn't contain any useful info other than it's a software upgrade, I'm confused about it. What did they upgrade for me? Was it rom related? I haven't noticed anything different about it so far.
Any info about it is welcome.

That 22 mb update will get you to LSD.
Thanks for the info!
Btw, just found out that the OTA has in fact failed, so I tried doing the upgrade via Kies. It went well, except for the fact the root has been removed by the update and I had to re-root. Also, the CWM I flashed a few days ago was gone too (but I used stock rom to root).
The changes I have seen with this update is only that my kernel now has a new build date (31. jan 2013).
can you post a review or comparison with your old rom (I assume it was LS8),

Well, I can't really post anything useful, since I was looking for "the perfect rom" from the moment 4.1.2 official appeared. Before that, I was on 4.0.4 official. The only real thing I've noticed (between this and all other roms I've tried out) is that I have a bit high battery drains if I keep WiFi turned on while at my office. I've figured it's something about the router itself (never use Apple made routers!), so I "fixed" it by not using WiFi at work.
Sorry for not being more informative, haven't really done any elaborate testing apart from noticing obvious things like battery drains. The only thing I can say for sure is - 4.1.2 >>> 4.0.4 and 4.1.2 official >>> custom roms for me.

I need advices on update to Android 4.3

Hello, I am receiving an official update on my S3 device by ota, It says the amount of 419.04MB. I suppose it is Android 4.3.
But this update is recomended? Does it have any problem, or lag, or Samsung fixed it on the update?
Please tell me if it is correct to update my mobile or not.
Regards and thanks to all of you.
For me it lagged extreme!
Device: Samsung Galaxy S3
ROM: CyanogenMod 11 (Temasek Unofficial V36 )
Kernel: Boeffla-Kernel-CM11-2.1-Beta9-
Version UGML4 is fine, a slight lag on waking from deep sleep but battery life is excellent.

Update your phone via a "SMART TERMINAL" or KIES.
I updated via OTA when I got home. The update went smooth... but the phone got awful slow/laggy/terrible.
A few days passed and I found a Samsung shop. Went in and saw an "update terminal."
After it finished, the phone was buttery smooth again.
Please note, that encryption will be MUCH SLOWER. So you cannot use it encrypted anymore. At least not like you used it. It will lag, it will stutter, all the crap you can imagine. Lucky I have insurance and I use a powerful password. So even if I get robbed I can reset the phone from home and get a new phone for cheap.
But yeah, I do miss the encryption feature, I felt safer that way. But it just got way too slow.
I even took the phone back to Samsung as in warranty repair, but they told me the policy says they can't downgrade so they just pushed up the 4.3 rom all over again. Meh.
