[Q] US Govt. won't allow you to purchase TP apps at HP - TouchPad General

US Government is stopping HP from allowing you to purchase applications
Hi all,
The thread title is what I see everytime I click on the purchase button for any application in the touchpad. I am first time webOS user with my email address, bought in UK in Staples as well as registration process choosing UK as my country.
Am I the only one seeing such a message pop up? HP is taking its sweet time explaining to me why this is happening and also when it will be resolved.
Its beyond a joke now.

Just finished a call to HP, its a waiting game now for this to be sorted. Shocking experience.

Dont know what you are talking about :/

You say that you set the UK as your country on the device, but what country are you actually in? The US has laws restricting the export of software to certain countries, and it's unlikely HP will be able to do anything about this.

Set your region to US , download the apps, then switch region back to UK.

In essence, there's nothing wrong.

so, if you are in the UK and you set as UK you can't buy apps?
if so... i'll probably set my region as US and do as below...

Huh, care to elaborate please as to not being able to purchase apps is all dandy

Export licenses, taxes, etc. Unlikely to be fixable.

Have you tried restarting the device after changing the region setting? Also, did you create a new profile (with a new email address) when you changed region to the US?

I'm in the UK, with a UK-registered TP, and it's working fine. A few missing apps (Kindle, etc) but nothing that can't be fixed by finding the IPK...

I just changed region without the other details. The hassle of doing all that for it to also fail or to work n then revert back to my UK profile for more pronlems, will be too much for me to handle. Its such a small matter for HP to resolve but its taking about a week.

Change languaje of HTC Hermes/SoftBank X01HT

I want to know is there is a possibility to Flash the HTC Hermes of Softbank:
http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/product/3g/x01ht/index.html
And change JAPANESE the ROM to English (or Spanish) one.
Thanks!

Beware the X01HT from SoftBAnk uses Bootloader 1.06. Basically that means that flashing it is impossible unless a fix for the bootloader issue is found. I just found out that I am stuck with Japanese now too

I had plans to go this afternoon to buy one What is this problem? I was looking in the forum but I couldn't find anything about it
The problem is that with Bootloader 1.04 the update software did not check the vendor ID of the Hermes. That meant that you could update a e.g. Cingular model with a T1 ROM or use a ROM with a different language.
Hermes that have Bootloader 1.06 (like the SoftBank X01HT) nocw ckeck that ID and won't let you update with a ROM from a different vendor....
Before you buy it, you can check mine if you are in Tokyo....
Yes, I'm living in Tokyo
So, is not possible to flash it Is there any post that speak about if they're researching to fix this issue?
Anyway, I don't speak many NIHONGO. Do you know any way to make it work in English (or almost English) ??
Other thing. I read in the Web that this model can't handle MMS. I imagine that it's because they didn't put a MMS program there. Could you make MMS work in your model?
Thanks for all!
Sesaru
Sorry for my late response here - I'd say currently there is no (easy) way to use a different ROM of the SoftBank model. I wil require somebody to come up with a solution for that, but that may take time. I'll go to the SoftBank store on the weekend to see if they plan to come up with an English model.
Right now, the unit will work in Japanese and Japanese only, no way you can get it to work in English as far as I can say at the moment.
MMS also does not work, so you are restricted to SMS. I am myself contemplating taking it back (I made an arrangement with the SoftBank people last Saturday to try how far I can get...) and get me a unit form Singapore.
So, if you are not comfortable with the restrictions, I'd rather advise to wait with the purchase. Let's see how DoCoMo will handle this...
Some more points:
You cannot use it currently as a wireless modem for your laptop (that's disabled)
There is no MSN chat on the unit (disabled too)
Outlook is fully restricted to SMS, I could not get pop or imap access to any other mail account to work.
I had the opportunity right now to compare a frirends DOPOD variation - he bought in Singapore. e uses it while visiting here utilizing his Singapore SIM roaming. On his, all functions work, including wireless modem, etc.
In my opinion, SoftBank did a great job in crippling the X01HT to the extent that it is less functional than an odinary Japanese 3G phone. My best advise is to buy a unlocked in Singapore or Taiwan. Alternatives on the Japanese market are the Wilcom units (but agreed, they are big and ugly compared to the sleek X01HT)
Hope that helps...

That's impossible. Softbank is removing all the staff for gaijins that Vodafone put here. For example, now WAP (Yahoo! Keitai) don't have any in English (I used the "last train" opcion a lot in the past).

You can still get that - on you phone, start the browser, the second left icon on the top and you are back on the old page where you can find the 'English' link at the botoom. But I agree, SoftBank is a huge step away from opening Japan to the West....
I probably have the chance to travel to Singapore within the next 3 weeks and will check the price there. I got friends in Singapore as well as in Taiwan and China who could ship the unit to me...
Hi!

Outch, this is expensive, considering that I got mine here as an update deal for my old mobile for something around $150-US... so I should not worry about the restrictions too much... ;-) I now managed to get Gmail up and running in mobile Outlook, so the SoftBank model becomes more and more practical.
What I still do not understand is why they disabled using it as a modem - that is really the single biggest drawback for me. The modem applet is simply not there and without it, dialup from my laptop via Blootooth does not work. It works fine with the same SIM in a Vodafone 3G phone, so I conclude it must e the missing modem app...
BTW, as an anectode - I recall the street price I saw in Taipei 3 weeks ago must have been somewhere near US-$ 400.--
Thanks for the link though!

Softbank X01HT and DoCoMo HTCz. Difference?

Hi. First let me say I'm glad I found this site, and the info about unlocking the Softbank X01HT. Because of this I decided to get one.
Secondly. The problem is they are completely sold out no matter where I look.
Currently I use a Symbian UIQ Motorola M1000 (A1000) with Docomo and Mopera for push e-mail.
I have noticed it's possible to get hold of a Softbank X01HT for about 48,000JPY off Yahoo auctions, so I'm considering getting one that way just to try it out. But whether I try it with Docomo or get a contract with Softbank is the problem. Even though the hardware should be the same, there seem to be a couple of major differences.
Docomo:
Docomo provides push e-mail and WiFi hotspots via Mopera.net to the HTCz
Docomo sells only 1 phone which is advertised as using HSDPA, and it is *NOT* the HTCz, in fact HSDPA is not mentioned on any of the literature surrounding the HTCz, including HTCs own site at japan.htc.com
Softbank:
Softbank tells me that the HTCz does *not* have push e-mail capability.
Now if I'm going to replace the software anyway how can they be different?
Does anyone know if you *can* use push e-mail (via mopera.net, for example) with a Softbank contract, or if you *can* use HSDPA with a docomo contract using the rebranded Hermes?
I would like to use BOTH! Battery life sucks if the phone has to go and check for e-mail every 5 minutes.

HSDPA is not enabled on docomo rom. you can enable it by using fit4cat Hermes Tweaker but i hear that it doesn't work on docomo network.

softbank doesn't provide push email services but that doesn't mean that you can't use push email with using softbank. you can use 3rd party who provides the push email service. search the threads about those in this forum. for an example, read this thread.

you can't access mopera with the softbank contract but you can run push email with using softbank as mentioned in above. if you insist on mopera, you need to have docomo usim with htc z. flashing docomo rom on whichever hermes may work but i am not sure as i have never tried that. i have docomo usim but mopera push email does not work on my wwe rom and i haven't found any workaround yet. if you want to use HSDPA, you need softbank.

if you want to use both, you may want to use softbank with a 3rd party push email service. with all that said, i don't recommend to those who don't want to use japanese rom going for softbank for now. they will be changing the ap id/password soon and you need their new rom only in japanese until someone cracks the new rom for the password. read this.

and... i don't believe running push email on hsdpa will save the battery life. i do that myself and the battery only lasted for about 10 to 12 hours. i now have an extended battery of 3000mah to get through the day without charging.
Thanks for your reply. I had seen the revelation about sofbank's new lockout policy. I may wait a bit to see how that pans out before taking the plunge. Either that or it's a good incentive to hurry up with my kanji study!

What IS actually this lockout policy? Seems they pulled out all X01HTs from sale these days (They said sold out)... I was trying to buy one for whole week, checked 12 different stores (Tokyo area), nowhere to be found! If anybody knows where to buy it, and share this info I'm buying pack of any beer, not kidding!
At one of the big shops in Shibuya, they mentioned something about ongoing 'softo' change that is taking place, and they also said that X01HT should be available again in one or two weeks!?!
I suspect the softo change is just to update their ROM and make it un-unlockable.. you can always buy one from yahoo auctions if you can dish out some spare cash (35,000~45,000yen?)

that should be true. they've been holding off selling x01ht because of the rom update and that was the reason why the stock was scarce recently. i also heard that they could start selling them with the new rom loaded like from today.

i tried this myself but it couldn't really solve the issue with using docomo usim. it kills that annoying screen once when booting up and the device becomes operable, but that screen comes up again every now and then even when i'm in the middle of typing something. if you are using it as a pda with no usim in it, that screen won't come up again once it's killed.
i heard that imei-check in the uk has a solution to this.

anyone interested in exchanging your Athena with me in English version

I know many people having problem in flashing the unit into different language.
If we couldn't do it due to CID lock.
Why not just swap our phone directly.
I base in West London. If anyone want to swap my AMEO in English version with his/her Chinese version. Please let me know.
My device is brand new from T-mobile and bound to T-mobile network currently. Of course, you can unlock it later on.
How you will flash it after exhange?

It sounds to me like the power button is faulty. I would exchange it with T-mobile - all you need is the box and to be able to show them the fault and they will swap it for you in any T-mobile store which has stock (which isn't many).

2.1 update options in new zealand?

Hi everyone,
I've got a gsm hero which is exactly as i bought it from an importer here in nz and i'd like to know what my options are for getting 2.1 on it?
baseband version 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22
build number 2.73.710.61
Running on vodafone NZ.
I suspect the phone was imported from Australia because the manual that came on the sd card was from australia but i can't be sure.
I've had a look around the forums but can't find any roms with the same build number as mine. so i'm not sure about using the wwe roms.
btw, I don't really care about rooting.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, if more details are needed just let me know
Thanks
I'm not sure but you can give this a try: set the date to July 10, 2010 then connect via wifi. That's what I did on my Asian Hero and it worked. Now I have 2.1
Also make sure that checking for firmwares is enabled in your setting.
im also from nz (and know two others with heros) and havent had any luck yet with the date tricks.

You need to find out what region your hero comes from.. check their htc support section to see if there are any downloadable updates you need to apply (sounds like there is) then once you have done that try the date trick again.
Sent from my HTC Hero

Which carrier would you Kiwis recommend for use in NZ? I'm more interested in data than phone calls.
How long will you be here?
5 months 2 days!
There are very few options sadly, Vodafone NZ and Orcon (depending on your model of Hero you may be able to use Telecom NZ). I am currently on Vodafone NZ which have prepaid and post paid plans. No matter which plan you go on you can add 100mb for $10. Their "smartphone" specific plans can be found here but as you are only coming for a few months then it doesn't make sense. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/shop/plansOnAccount.jsp;ATG_SESSION_ID=pHs1MPnXQbn2zZJgplJjSvHbvtyHcQcTwy1wpPnpyv0d2NghpS4h!1018025480!2040597205?plantype=mobile&billingMethod=onAccount&planSegment=consumer&productGroupItemId=grp74400002&menuKey=mnit1400020
Your best bet may be to go with Orcon (they piggyback on Vodafone network anyway). Their prices are here http://www.orcon.net.nz/mobile/plans
Personally I'm on Vodafone and have a $30 + $10 (for 100mb) plan as i am near WiFi 90% of the time.
Let me know if you need anything else, like APN details and the like as the people in the stores don't know much at all!!
A brilliant, helpful reply thanks!

[Q] UK Titan - no US region settings

Hey everyone, sorry if this has cropped up previously but I've searched to no avail and no one from Microsoft has an answer either.
I've got a new HTC Titan sitting here, completely unused. I won it at the Windows Phone Inner Circle event in Denver weeks before the device's US launch, but I still haven't switched over. This is because the device is a UK phone. The phone does not appear to have any US settings at all, is unlocked, and even comes with a UK plug instead of a US one. Presumably, this is because I won the device before the US version was ready for release.
The issue is that even when I switch my region settings over to "English (US)", nothing actually changes on the phone when it restarts...everything is still English (UK). For example, "synchronising", "favourites", "colour", etc. At first I thought that this wasn't a big deal, but it might be if other region settings persist. So I have three related questions that I'd love to find out:
If/when a custom bootloader is released for the Titan, can I use it to flash a US ROM to my device?
I have to switch carriers to AT&T in order to fully use the Titan (hence my hesitation), but will bringing the phone to AT&T and letting them activate it have a chance of loading US settings onto the phone? I know that will load AT&T app marketplace options, which is why I was curious.
Most importantly, even if none of this can possibly change, will I at all be restricted by UK region restrictions for Zune, Marketplace, etc.? I have a US-based Zune and WLID account, but this is my main concern because of the phone's region.
If anyone can share some insights on this, I'd really appreciate it.

1. US ROM must be considered. Because the AT&T version Does use the different Chips for different Radio version. It might get the phone bricked. The Goldcard tecnique is not available on Titan, so Official AT&T Rom to flash on the phone is nearly impossible. It need to be done by 3rd party.
2. No. Your Live ID will determine which content you can access. Don't ask why people at Asia can still submit and buys apps that are for US only.
3. The region of the phone could be changed, but not the agent inside. So, don't be surprise that you have the English voice comeout from Tellme and Turn-by-Turn navigation from Bing maps doesn't work at US. You can change, the Region Format, System Locale and Browser &Search Language to English (United States) but it can't change the fact, that this phone is built for Europe user. I will ask HTC if they can bring the custom language pack (if possible) to Windows Phone. I am still talking to HTC Tech Support about this.
I contacted HTC Support several times and they didn't give me any solution (apart from doing a deadly mistake of telling me to search the Android Market for an application :S)!!
I'm still hoping we find a different ROM to flash. Is there an Australian version maybe floating around? I'm dying to use voice navigation and Tellme (which doesn't understand anything when set to English UK).
Thanks for the replies...starting to think maybe I should just sell the thing and use the money to buy a US Titan - especially due to the points about navigation and TellMe. Of course, I'd probably want to sell it to someone in the UK so no one else has region problems. Maybe I'll start looking into that.
In the meantime, if any encouraging news pops up about this, let me know
