SGS2 & AT&T Medianet Plan after SGS2 US Launch - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Just ordered up an unlocked SGS2 and can't wait for it to arrive.
I've been reading on the forums here and it seems that the SGS2 will work with an AT&T Medianet plan ($10 or $15/mo)... (Maybe without HSPA+, but that's OK... I'll just be happy to have the SGS2 )
Now that AT&T has announced the SGS2 for the US market... Will unlocked (grey market) versions of the SGS2 continue to work with Medianet data plans?

I don't think anyone here can give you a clear answer until the phone comes out.
People that bought unlocked Xperia X10s did get bumped to the smartphone plans when at&t released the X10, let's hope that isn't the case for this phone.

I'm going to guess it will be fine.. Reason is:
With the original Galaxy S, the "i9000" from bell worked fine, because AT&T's version was called the "Captivate". As far as I know the Rogers Captivate was recognized by AT&T because it was the same device. Since AT&T has a name, "Attain" I don't think that qualifies as any of the Unlocked International versions.
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought AT&T had some exclusivity with the X10 which I think is why they had all the info, like with the Dell Streak.
Again, just a semi-educated guess.

The ATT device has no name other than Galaxy SII

The model number for AT&T's variant is SGH-i927 vs. GT-i9100 for the international version. In order for AT&T to track international SGS2's Samsung would have to provide them with the IMEI numbers for every phone they've sold worldwide. I'd guess that's very unlikely to happen.

Thanks barry, this is the more logical version of what I was trying to say but I couldn't find info on whether the model number was different.

I don't know that the model number matters. I think it is the IMEI. If the IMEI of the SGH-i927 is very similar to that of the GT-i9100, then AT&Ts system may catch it.

Stop thinking so hard about it. The answer is NO.
Its a completely different model phone.
The only 2 phones that got caught was dell streak and nexus s because they used the same unlocked model.
I've been running unlocked phones for 5-6 years with no issues.
And hspa + will work also

"And hspa + will work also"
Does this mean you can get hspa+ on MediaNet plan?
I thought the consensus on the forum is that you can get (fake)4G only when you are on 4G data plan with appropriate APN settings.

Everyone's on different 3G plans. I'm on the data for non-Smartphones plan and get HSPA+ speeds. I've hit 8MB down when I'm traveling.

Try setting APN to 4G configuration and remove 'standard' APN. You will lose data connection if you do not have 4G SOC on your account. I think what happens is that phone connects to the tower with HSPA+ however the actual speed is capped by the gateway. I wonder if disabling HSPA and using 3G only will decrease actual speed.

I think all 4g is fake but thats another issue.
Whatever is available in your area, you will get. I get hspa+ in my area but its only about 6-8mb download.

Ya, pretty much what BarryH_GEG said.
I am on the non-smartphone data plan too. $10 / month unlimited data. I've hit 6mb downloads, but my average is around 3.5 to 4.5mb.

Ok so the $10 unlimited data is with $20 unlimited messaging correct? Since I don't need messaging I'm on the $15 unlimited data plan. Just want to make sure I'm on the right plan

Correct the medianet is $10/mo, but you have to have unl txt for $20/mo =$30/mo for unl data & text.
I alsk have the unl data for non-smartphones, aka medianet and I hit data downs if almost 8Mbps sometimes. You'll be fine op on the medianet plan, getting great HSPA+ speeds and saving money.

Just get a non-smartphone and customize the plan to however you want, while asking for the Medianet plan. After that just put the sim card into your imported sgs2 and your done.

AT&T Branded Atrix-Need IMEI

So I have a SGS II, and am currently on the iPhone unlimited data plan. In order to switch to a 4G unlimited plan, AT&T said I need an AT&T 4G phone's IMEI so I was wondering if anyone would be willing to send me their IMEI so I can get this faster data plan? Please and thank you!
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
Eh... it isn't any faster? At least not from when I had mine swapped over. The label, which is all that it is, doesn't seem to affect much of anything.
And I can assure you that no one is going to fork over their IMEI for you to give to AT&T.
It's not real 4G and it's no faster than being on the iPhone unlimited plan.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
IPhone and atrix will never reach 4g speeds. We are capped at 14 or 16mbps I believe... which I assure you att will not reach for atleast 2 years or better. If at all lol

well damn i hear mixed stories everywhere... whatever i can live with 3G until AT&T lights up that damn LTE network.
dude... no one is going to give their IMEI out. that's like giving out your car's VIN and registration for loan. their faux-G is on the exact same network you're running off for 3G.
an unlimited 4g plan doesnt exhist with att. i just got off the phone with them and they said that if i want 4g data. i have to drop my 3g unlimited plan and get the 4gb plan.
also. my unlimited data was shown in their system as an iphone unlimited olan. a customer service rep changed it to an " original smart phone data plan" and i lost my voicemail and my data didnt work for S**T!
I also agree with everyone here, no one will give you the imei off their device.

Not true. I had the unlimited 3G iphone plan and got my atrix with my 2 year upgrade. As long as you don't change any features of the plan, you are grandfathered into said plan, and mine runs at ATT's 4G speeds.

From when I had to deal with this for my father, the current unlimited (3G) does let you grandfather currently at their "Current" 4G speed.. the HSPDA+ ... however, when they launch their "True" 4G network, all current Unlimited plans will not carry over and you can only have the unlimited data with the H+.. if you want to switch to the true 4G, they are going to make you drop the unlimited that you currently have and go with the 2gb or 4gb which ever it will be.. duno if the are going to have unlimited or not.. they didnt really say.. but that is what the ATT person had explained to me when tried to get my fathers unlimited grandfather back on..

this is what kinda what they told me but did not include the info about running 4g speeds now until they get the true 4g. however i was told if i wanted those speeds. i would have to drop unlimited. also i was informed they have no intention of having a 4g unlimited plan even if you are already grandfathered in. they have dropped unlimited data period!
and to respond to post above yours..... my xperia x10 has faster uploads and downloads then this atrix does. responds better, has brighter display. my xperia is running a custom 2.2.1 running at 998mhz high and low. while my atrix is overclocked to 1.3ghz. so i dont believe the hype that this phone is that great. almost thinking i should have stayed with the inspire and only for the larger screen size. it lacked compared to my xperia as well.
Well, lets look at what's wrong here, and whats
"Right"....
1: you have a SGS II.(RIGHT)
2: Its a "4G phone ("RIGHT")
3: Its for tmobile (right)
4:you will never get 4g speeds from at&t with a tmobile phone (RIGHT!!!!)
5: NO ONE WILL GIVE YOU THEIR IMEI NUMBER(right, I hope)
If you have two devices on the same network, both identifying them selves as the same device, one will be shut off. I had a similar issue with 2phones previously.I had a simcard in phone one. With out powering off the device, I put it into the second phone and powered it on. People were sending me texts and calling me all day. Some text Wendy to phone one and some to phone two. My phone calls would only last for 3 seconds MAX.
Now, with that being said, if you want 4g speeds on your sgs 2, go get a fancy mobile hotspot, and Cary that with you too. Until then,
GO AWAY TROLL.
I don't even have the atrix yet and want to donkey punch you through your computer/phone screen...... troll

LTE Test?

Just picked up a note on ebay, excited to get it. However since I live in what is only the 5th largest city in the US, ATT obviously sees no reason to have LTE here. Anyone have any ideas of how I would check if LTE is working? If I have ATT insurance will it cover this phone?
In unrelated note are ICS roms pretty stable? I'd prefer to jump to that but am not an early rom adopter.
If its an ATT phone you bought off Ebay then it should just work, the only way you can see if its even an option is to go into your mobile networks settings and switch it to GSM/HSPA/LTE mode, (probably better for you to switch it to GSM/HSPA until you do have an LTE area.
If you bought the International phone, I don't think LTE is even an option (from what i've read).
As for warranty related questions I couldn't help ya with that.
If it's an AT&T phone it says (edit)4GLTE on GB on the status bar when you are connected to an LTE network.
For warranty information I would contact AT&T. I'm about to drop my warranty through AT&T and go somewhere else because $10 a month and then a $200 deductible for the phone is crappy (I didn't realize this until after I got the insurance when purchasing the phone because I was too excited just to get the phone). Some other places (still reading reviews) offer you to pay a one time fee for however many years and then the dedictible, which is not $200.

I believe he's referring to the grand City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia.
There is no way to test LTE without being in an LTE area, but there a few locations a couple hours North and South on 95 if you really want to know if it's working.
With the AT&T Note, you have to have the newest generation SIM card otherwise you won't get HSPA data either.

Your SIM card needs to have LTE provisioning enabled on it for it to authenticate with the LTE network properly (allowing you to use it). Might be easier to go to a local AT&T store and have them give you a new SIM and make sure they enable LTE on your data plan for that particular SIM.

[Q] Roaming on AT&T

I've noticed that when I enter a T-Mobile 'dead zone' with my T-Mobile Amaze, it doesn't roam to other service providers despite enabling the roaming option.
My previous T-Mobile phones would allow roaming to AT&T, including data roaming, provided that I was in an AT&T service area, but apparently the specific SIM card provided with the Amaze does not allow roaming to AT&T. I even tried to force roam to the specific carrier, and a notification pops up saying that the SIM card does not allow connections to this network.
I find it strange that I was able to roam on AT&T before on my previous phones (such as the G1), but now I am not able to do so.
Any insight to this? I doubt that SIM unlocking the device would fix this. Maybe it would?
I know this isnt allowed on amaze custom roms because of its prelocked I tried myself with friends sim it worked once I used there sim for at&t.

I've noticed that the older T-Mobile SIM cards were able to roam (especially on the AT&T network) but it appears that the newer ones prevent that capability.
if y'all aren't able to roam with your Amaze ya need to contact TMO. I'm a long haul trucker (border-to-border mostly east of the I-35 corridor) and I have no problems connecting to other networks when outside of a TMO coverage area including connecting to AT&T (huge areas in rural OH and WV) even connecting and getting 3G speeds on AT&T's net.

Same! When I visit my parental units in NE Ohio I roam on AT$T almost constantly with my amaze. Usually what I have to do is enable/disable airplane mode and it will connect automatically. (You can't just manually select AT$T, it has to be done automatically by the phone, otherwise you'll get a registration error)
Hope this helps! Otherwise you should just call TMO and complain.
Does roaming charge you extra on your bill? And do you notice data speed differences while on other networks? That's my noob question for the week.

In 8 years I've never been charged and I drive all over the country. Some of the towers won't let me go over 2G and some let me on at a slow 3G (I have noticed their 3G isn't as fast as ours)
For calling and texting? No charge at all. Just your normal limits on minutes, etc. As for data, they implemented a policy that depends on how much data you have. I get 2gb of 4g, and for my plan I get 50mb of data roaming, after that they cut you off from using data while roaming. You will still be able to do calling/texting however, and you will/should not be charged for roaming within the country under any circumstances.
Oh, and... BAM!

Did that. It didn't change anything. I did it several times. Strange...
But yeah, I noticed that from what he said, I can't just select other provider.

Yeah I'm on the same boat. Anyone know how I can test my roaming? I remember there used to be an app for cdma devices a while back.

Hmmm. So just to see for myself I threw my T-Mobile sim card into my old SIM/BL-unlocked Sony Xperia Play 4G from AT&T, and look what I did. Turns out it really is the sim card blocking access. It seems Tmo only lets you roam when they see fit, as in, you can't "choose" AT&T's network, it just becomes available if your Tmo network is unavailable for a length of time. I think. Maybe.

I'm wondering. Is your T-Mobile's SIM card a WiFi calling capable SIM card? I'm suspecting that the newer cards do block access. When I had the old (non WiFi calling capable SIM card) on my G1, I could choose which carrier I wanted to use, including AT&T if I wanted to roam. This was nice, as sometimes I'm in a location where T-Mobile has like 1 bar of GPRS/edge service, and the AT&T would have several bars of 3G service.

Yes, I have WiFi calling through my sim card. It doesn't charge me minutes ^_^ I wonder why they would do that, though. Very odd.

[Q] Best ATT Radio for Straight Talk?

I'm using CM7 (Neutrino's 2.8) and just switched from AT&T to straight talk to save half on my bill. Just curious if there are other straight talk users running CM7 and which radios you have used that provide the fastest data speeds?
I was using ATT radios N_01.77.30P and also tried N_01.100.00R and I'm getting about 2.5 / 1 mbps down/up.

It is also a question of what they have in place at the tower. Sounds like they have dual t1 (1544 x 2).

Thanks, but how did you figure that out? How can I know which towers near me have which equipment?

You can only guess, based on your test result, time of day and signal strength. Another useful measure is latency (ms). This gives a hint on the robustness and or congestion of the connection. Sub 100 ms is excellent. 500 ms and above is very poor.

I'm also interested in different radios for use with straight talk.
I'm using neutrino as well and have been getting horrible (IMO) speeds. Maybe its just because I am not getting H+ (hspa+) speeds on straight talk? I currently only get regular H (hspa). Do you have the same problem?
My speeds are attached.

Yes I do have the same problem and I haven't seen H+ on my phone. But can you even get H+ on the Atrix 4G? According to this, you can't.
From what I read, Straight Talk is compatible with HSPA+,

H+ symbol is rom specific. The absence of the symbol does not mean you are not getting hspa+. Check your mobile network type under About Phone. Also look at the Android service menu (Dial *#*#4636#*#*).

That article is more than a year old. Saying that, yes the atrix gets H+ speeds. I see it all the time on mine and here's my data speeds in my area on it. This is with att sim.
Hmmm wont let me insert the pic. My speeds are 5.98 down and 1.11 up

Thanks. Both the phone info and android service menu show HSPA and not HSPA+.
I don't think it's because of Straight Talk and the ROM thread states that people are getting H+. Any ideas what are the causes?

My Atrix came with the .30 radio. I've had no trouble with that radio but couldn't resist upgrading to .37. I really saw no real difference in my area, but as someone pointed out earlier it may be your area. I've read users upgrading like I did and it made a huge difference. I also read that users had better results using the .36 radio instead of .37. Your just going to have to experiment. By the way I'm on straight talk and using the Top Smart ROM.

Thanks for the note. What kind of speeds are you getting?
Does the android menu (either about phone or *#*#4636#*#*) show hspa+ or just hspa? In my case it's just HSPA, i'm not sure if it's a ROM limitation ...

I don't think you'll ever see the +. 3g is umts, H is hspa (that's hsdpa and hsupa) , the + comes in when the back haul (connection from tower to mother ship) has high capacity, eg from 1 x t1 (1544 mbps) vs n x t1 ( n x 1544 mbps). I could be wrong though. But I can tell you that hspa is capable of speeds that you would not have believed possible (fact). I'll run some tests and see if I can clarify further. Hope this helps.

My wife and I both have the Atrix 4g on Straight Talk. I'm not allowed to touch her phone so it's stock. She does get H+ and at times it's actually faster than my DSL. Upgrading to cable this week, but anyway yeah H+ with the Atrix on Straight Talk is real... at least that's what her phone says.
I did do 3 speed tests. 1st was 1523 down and 915 up, 2nd was 953 down and 121 up and 3rd was 2157 down and 1088 up. All done at my desk within 4 minutes so it varies.

The numbers are what it is all about and thanks for posting. And I do need to research the + piece and where does this elusive + come in. Judging by those numbers, the connection from the tower back to the home base aka "the internet" isn't worth writing home about. That's a single t1. If you were posting 4000+ download then that would that would be another conversation. But, that said, hspa is capable of far higher speeds, but the back haul has to be in place. The number that makes the biggest difference, believe it or not, is latency. Anything less that 250ms is great. If you are getting 700ms+ then you'll "feel" it in responsiveness. I'd take 100 ms at 1000kbps compared to 700ms at 4000kbps any day of the week.
Example below:
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2
Where I live in the sticks, I get 4g from the tower in the next county, but if I go into town (only a two stoplight town) the tower there is only capable of 2g. Yeah not even 3g, just one big E in my status bar. So I'm happy with the numbers I get at home even tho I mainly use Wi-Fi when home.

Verizon Note 2 on AIO Wireless - Can it be done?

If so what steps would be required to make the phone compatible?
It would work. You would just need to root your device and flash a ROM that has access to the APN settings so you would be able to get data and mma

Would LTE work with it after that?
ROM recommendations?
There are several different threads where this kind of thing is discussed. But to answer your question, no. AIO operates on atts network, the Verizon note 2 is not compatible with their lte band. Best you'd get is 3g.
What about a tmobile note 2?

Are you sure? The Note 2 should be hardware compatible with any U.S. carrier.

Technically it is hardware compatible, though not fully functional. AT&T and Verizon deliver their LTE on different parts of the spectrum. As someone pointed out above, they are different(unsupported) bands.

I believe the bands can be unlocked. The phone hardware is literally identical. It may require another carrier's radios and/or kernel. It may also be possible in the service menu.
I dont know about you but I have a verizon galaxy note 2.. I first went with t-mobile and didnt like it because all I got was 2g (ew) second I went with straight talk with there sim kit that comes with sim card or instructions for cdma. I now get 2.5gb data 3g & hspa+ (4g) and only pay $45 a month. Happy camper here.. the kit also comes with straight talk apn guide thay you copy onto your phone. The carrier name on the phone will not be straight talk.. it'll say home.

HSPA+ is not the same as LTE(HSPA+ is like faux 4G). Though, data speeds with HSPA+ will still be much faster than 3G. You should not have any problem connecting to HSPA+ with a verizon rom and kernel. I haven't tried it with any domestic carriers yet, but have with carriers outside of the US with no problems.

Basically, data is not throttled up to 2.5 gigs of usage, and after that you get bumped down to 2G speed.
