[Q] New Yorker Galaxy Tab Edition - myTouch 4G Themes and Apps

Hi all,
The New Yorker magazine has a Galaxy Tab edition of their app and I was wondering if there's ANY way to get this app for an Android phone. Surely there must be an .apk somewhere?
Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I'd been looking for the APK, too. I found it last night and installed it on my ViewSonic G Tab (w/Vegan Gingerbread) and after a bunch of application errors, finally got it to work. I loaded the onto my Droid 3, but haven't gotten it to work.
It is a laborious processes with multiple downloads and registrations.
Go to www'nextissue'com/instruction'html# (replace ' with . - I'm not permitted to post outside links yet) At the bottom of the instruction page is a "Try downloading again" link that will start the download of the Next Issue (NI) apk.
Once you get the Next Issue app installed, you'll have to create an NI account.
With that installed go to the NI Store inside the app and click on The New Yorker (TNY) sample issue. In the new window, select the "Digital Upgrade" button.
You'll then have to enter your subscription information from your TNY mailing label. Once that is verified by NI, you'll be prompted to download the TNY/NI app.
After the TNY/NI app is installed you may have to input your NI login information again.
Then, the TNY issue has to be downloaded on to your device via the TNY/NI app.
When the download is done, you should be able to enjoy TNY on your phone/tablet.
Hope that helps.

Ok, so essentially, I'll still need a digital subscription. I wish there was a way to know it would work with my mytouch4g before paying for a whole year subscription.

there are sample issues to download and preview, though you may have to enter credit card info for the sample -- says you won't be charged if you cancel w/in 30 days.
try to download the apps, of you get that far and everything is working, then the magazines will probably work.
It seems like some print/mail subscriptions include the free digital subscription and others are additional $. I have print subscriptions for New Yorker, People and Esquire. After I entered my subscription numbers, only Esquire asked for payment info.
The New Yorker is working well on my tablet. The site says it's "optimized" for the Samsung Galaxy and Moto Xoom. People had a video that wouldn't play inside one of the articles so it may be that some features won't work on "non-optimized" devices.

Well, what I'm hoping for is to be able to pay to read it on my mytouch 4g and on my CM7 Nook color.

Does anyone have the apk for this? I tried to install TNY on my xoom using the NI Store and couldn't find the app listed. Their support folks then told me that it has only been released for the lower resolution devices so far.

[Q] WSJ Android tablet app

I am using Nook Color to load apk files. I wanted to get the WSJ Android tablet app, http://online.wsj.com/public/page/tablet.html?mod=WSJ_footer.
It is a free app but I do not have Market access. could someone upload the apk file for the WSJ Android tablet app?
I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
i am not seeing that app available on market.
Someone with a Samsung galaxy tablet would see it only. i tried one at a verizon store. Same goes for nytimes tablet app
I see 2 WSJ apps on my galaxy S phone... but people are saying its just a "Short cut" i doubt thats what you're looking for
I'm not sure if this one is the one you are looking for:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9641665/stacktrace.android.news.wsj.lite_1.apk
Only someone with Galaxy Tab can see the Android Tablet app. It would be the official WSJ app (not the app lite) version. Thanks all for your effort so far. The app can only be seen with Galaxy Tab or other official Android tablet.
We should get more Galaxy Tab apps for the NC.
masking
Is there an app like the eris market fix that could mask your phone temporarily of course as a gtab? I would love hte NYT tablet version (though I am sure both will probably come out next year in the BN app store.

NYTimes Tablet app is on the market, I just downloaded it
Nice!
That's great. Do you mind posting the nytimes app? I cannot access it on my Eris.
I'd really like this as well, and the NY Times tablet app!
also want WSJ android tablet app
does anybody have the WSJ (official) apk or know how to make our Nook's Market app think that we are using a tablet rather than a phone? The WSJ app only shows up for tablets.
Thanks all.
WSJ app only works on Samsung Tab
Wall Street Reader (lite) is only limited access; WSR (full) is available for purchase but then you also need the WSJ online paid subscription as well.
On Nook Color of you go here http://mobile2.wsj.com/device/index.php you get the mobile lay out. It doesn't look like the iPad app interface due to the B&N wsj offering but its pretty good.
Note: you must set the browser to "mobile" mode vs. "desktop" in setting for it to work appropriately. Otherwise, in desktop mode, it sends you to the main WSJ page.
Enjoy.
Cheers m8s!
edit: NYTimes app works great outta the box.
Official WSJ app
I am speaking about the Official WSJ app (not from Stacktrace as you mentioned in your post).
The official WSJ app is at https://market.android.com/details?id=wsj.reader_1
The app is free and does require a subscription to get the full content.

Looks like it requires Froyo...could that be the reason you don't see it? Also comments on this link claim logins are still required. Haven't tried it myself.

WSJ apk works on CM7!!!
I've spend that last 2 morning reading the WSJ on CM7 using the official WSJ apk. It looks amazing!
WSJ
How did you get the WSJ to register your email on the nook color? I have downloaded the ap (the tablet app - same UI as on the IPAD). Its a great UI but unfortunately on the NC I cant get past the registration page.

It shows up on mine. I've changed a number of things in my /system/build.prop. Since this app shows up for the Galaxy Tab, I don't think it's related to any of the Honeycomb preview changes. I suspect the following change will do it.
Change the line:
ro.build.characteristics=default
to:
ro.build.characteristics=tablet
If you don't have that line, add it after the ro.build.fingerprint=BLAHBLAHBLAH line on your device.
Good luck. You may have to clear your Market cache and the data for Google Services Framework and reboot afterwards.
EDIT:
Nevermind, tried on my Nexus One just adding that one line, and it wasn't enough. Looks like you'll have to spoof being a Galaxy Tab or a Xoom in addition.
I simply downloaded it from the website listed 4 posts up, from my nookcolor in DolphinHD, by clicking on the "Download app" button, which forced me to sign into my google account from there. I also needed to create a (free) user account, verify it via the sent email, and voila.. working WSJ app.
Thanks!

[App] Amazon Instant Video (FWIW)

I've been playing with my new Kindle Fire, trying to find apps I can side load onto it. I didn't see this posted here or in the market, so I pulled the Amazon Video player that came packaged with it. Requires:
1. Unrooted device
2. Amazon account (Prime membership if you want free stuff)
3. Wi-Fi connection
A few notes:
-You can use OTA Rootkeeper to temporarily unroot. Haven't personally done this because I'm on CM7 and lazy.
-Since it's not designed for our phones the layout is a little funky.
-For Amazon logins: Select a free video and purchase it. After that you should get a login screen.
-Works on some tablets too.
I realize this has some limited uses, but I figured others may be interested in checking it out. Maybe someone can even figure out how to get around the root/wi-fi bottlenecks?
And yes, I know you can just use desktop mode and log in to the site via a browser.
Have fun!
Cool thanks... I'm a prime member, so I'll give it a try when I get me Asus Transformer Prime in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the .apk though.

[Q] App not availiable on tablet

Am I missing something here? App is not compatible with some of your devices.
Htc Evo- check
Transformer Tablet- no check
I need to understand the developer side of this coin. I have been trying to persuade Jawbone to update their android app "Jawbone Companion" to support my tablet. I don't know, but I assume their would be a publisher option in Google Play to add or delete supported devices so that they cannot be installed on those from the Play store. For example, I had to go to the website to find the app because search shows no results on the tablet.
It's a bluetooth headset. It supports 2.1+edr. App supported on Android OS 4.0, OS 2.3 and select OS 2.2 phones. Transformer tf300 has bluetooth. It supports 3.0+edr. It has ICS and is certainly more capable than a 2.2 phone.
Sooo the only difference I see from this side is a bigger screen. I have emailed at least 3 app makers that I use frequently and they just keep saying it's not tablet supported. So do they just have to add devices to some file that cross checks with Google Play or is the code for my tablet so drastically different that they would have to write a whole new app for tablets?
A technical explanation link of the whole developer process regarding this would be nice.
Update to OP
I have found a method of downloading apk files in the Chrome browser with the APK Downloader extension. It only works with Chrome and I logged into my wife's account, did a quick search for my apps in question, then proceeded to download them to pc by making play think it was sending the apk to my wife's "supported" phone. Then I manually transferred the apks to my "unsupported" tablet where they are now running fine, no errors and no resolution problems.
I have emailed the developers of these apps and they have blown me off by saying that tablets in general are not supported, I emailed them all back telling them their apps were working fine and I didn't understand why they couldn't have allowed me to just download it the easy way.
So are they just being lazy? This just reinforces my reasoning that the phone and tablet are about the same and don't require any more coding than any other app that has problems on certain phones. Seems to me as long as the resolution is high enough and it allows auto rotation that any phone app should run on a tablet, and I don't see why they all keep telling me apps are not supported.
Until then I guess I'll just get my apps the way I described.
yap the apkdownloader would be the way i recomended to you =)
dunno why they dont support tablets
in some cases u dont have to understand them
feel lucky u find a way to make it work

CW Network app?

Hi everyone. CW Network recently released a new VOD app for Apple TV, Roku, and Xbox, and Fire TV... but not Android TV. Someone on Reddit was kind enough to rip the Fire TV apk and post it for people to try, but there are a couple of issues. One is the Amazon ownership check (which doesn't seem to allow it to run even if you have the CW app on Amazon's app store), and the other is a strange error message about network connectivity. Could anybody take a look at it and see if it can be hacked to work on the Shield?
Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/556f46/heres_firetv_cw_app_shows_on_leanback_launcher/
APK download:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/gkokbqq27s4vaxv/The_CW_com.cw.tv.android_1.0.0_106.apk
..
The guy who ripped it says that the leanback intent was already in place.

I'll pull out my old Fire TV stick from storage and pull the apk this evening.
Edit:
Decided to try right away. The CW app was added to my amazon account and installed on my Fire Stick directly from Amazon. It still gave the connection error. There must be an issue with the app if the app is still giving a connection error on a Android device it was designed to be used on. I'm assuming CW will released an update to fix the problem soon enough. When they do, I can remove the amazon checks.

Weird, it works perfect on my Fire TV and Stick downloaded directly from Amazon. It doesn't work on any Android TV device though. I don't know how to crack the app. Someone needs to crack the app and see if he can get it working.
..
Would you be able to remove the checks on the PlayStation Vue Firetv app as well? I would love to be able to use it on my Shield.
Its not letting me post the link since I am a newer member but please let me know if you can do it and I'll DM you a download link.
Thanks!
..
Thanks for putting all this effort in. I'm away from home (and my Shield) this week, but I will try it when I get back.
Finally had the opportunity to try it. It no longer throws the ownership error, but still throws the connection error.
..
Cool. I'll keep an eye out for that, and I'll reply if I find anything regarding a new APK. Thanks!

Anything new happening on this front?
There are two network connections made at the initialization of the app. They are both going to Amazon WS. Both appear to have issues, probably because the User-Agent isn't a Fire TV UA, and the request that gets the license reports "android" from the Shield whereas the Fire version reports "amazonfire" on the posted data. Because of the differences, the license returns "invalid" on the JSON response.
If the responses that come back from the Fire stick were to come back to Shield, the app would function perfectly. I had changed the two URLs to my local webserver to return the good responses, and I could browse and watch episodes without issue. Beautiful picture.
With that, the app is very specifically blocking Android TV devices.
EDIT: Correction, the User-Agent is not used. It is just the "amazonfire", which is based on one piece of code. A small modification gets this working without needing to host the two response files.
Attached is an apk to try out.
** Edit: current version doesn't work anymore. Removing ***
That's awesome. I'll try this when I get home from work today. Would it be difficult to do this to the USA and Cartoon Network apps as well?
Seems to work awesome. I was able to watch an episode of the flash without issue
I took a look at USA Network and the Cartoon Network apps. The Amazon app for USA Network is a webapp, so it is unlikely to work without bigger modifications. Cartoon Network appears to have a few issues (title bar displays all the time, no leanback launcher banner icon, Amazon hooks). I'll take a look, but at least they have added casting support to the Cartoon Network Android app for now.
Thanks for posting The CW App, while the Content seems sparse, and not really my thing (DC Comic Universe), it does at least work, and thats something.

Anyone got the Disney+ App running on a device outside of the Netherlands?

Disney+ is on a free trial in the Netherlands right now, so just for fun and curiosity really, I grabbed the APK for the Disney+ app here...
https://apk.support/app/com.disney.disneyplus#per_area
and installed it on my Note 9, and fired up my VPN, connected to the Netherlands and attempted to launch the app.
I guess it must be doing some kind of region check on my phone at launch as it just stops. Visiting the Disney+ app page on the google play store via VPN informs me that the app is incompatible with all my devices even though I have two Nvidia Shields and my Samsung Note 9 as well as a few other android devices - it's definitely running on Shields in the Netherlands as they have been shown on various web sites.
Anyone know of any jiggery pokery we can try to get this thing running on our None-Netherland devices - because we can :silly::silly::silly:
Thanks.

The app you linked isn't complete. It's legit (I checked the SHA-1 hash against an installed, working version of the apk and the one from Google Play are the same).
If you use a VPN provider with an IP based out of the Netherlands & Aurora, you should be able to properly install the app on a rooted device.
SAI (which Aurora uses) allows you to install split/bundled apk or extract complete bundles to archive for later.
You can't login though. The app will give you an error if you try to proceed with signing up or try to enter an existing login. I don't know much more beyond that.

Yeah seems like Disney has their uber A-Game engaged for VPN blocking too - probably why they launched the beta in a smaller market, test the load balancing and the gate-keeping all at once.
get it to work with anything?
Did you check any other server? if its not working then you should go for another option like PureVPN or Cyberghost. They both are working fine.

How to install Disney + using the SAI app.
Hello everyone,
I searched for this but ddidn't find it. So forgive me if I missed it. Here is a link to get Disney + to work on a rooted android device.
https://youtu.be/SOdkuy9dZGs[/url]
There is a link in his description to all the files to download plus the SAI app. It was very easy and I've already watched two episodes of Star Wars Rebels so the app definately works. the Disney + app is split into three pieces then reassembled by SAI.
Good luck!!
?
This worked for me on my rooted Huawei Honor Note 8 !
I had Disney Plus on all my other devices but I could not get it on my rooted Huawei honor note 8 and now it works perfectly!
Thank you ?
