Sms replacement with no internet? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a SMS replacement app (like Gosms pro or handcent or chomp) that does NOT have a "full internet access" privilege? I found "SMS classic view" but that's not really a viable replacement.

and how do you suppose the app to send it's messages if it isn't allowed to use the internet?

SMS does not use internet.

I don't know any, but you could use a firewall to block the internet access of your SMS app.

SMS don't need internet, but SMS replacements do.

Thanks for answering and sorry, I wasn't entirely clear. My stock (Sony Ericsson Neo) sms application kinda sucks so I'm looking for a faster alternative.
I just want to send regular SMS - that doesn't need internet. What I don't like is that most of these sms replacement apps can both read my contacts and access internet. I understand the "read contacts" and "read sms" and similar permissions but internet is not needed.
My phone is not rooted so I can't use firewall.

For additional features, maybe, but why would they need it for just sending and receiving SMS messages?

I don't think there are any alternatives out there that don't use internet. Most of the more popular ones probably use it for themes mainly I'd say.

Paranoia mode ENGAGED.

You sound like a prime candidate for LBE Privacy. You can specify exactly what permissions each individual app has, so you could use any SMS app you like and just turn off internet access. If the app still works, win!

There are very few options for few. It's very possible that there's an SMS app that doesn't need internet but it must be hard to find.
Here are your options,
LBE Privacy Guard like mentioned by John. (Similar to UAC in Win7)
DroidWall or any firewall.
CM7.1 (Supports denying permissions to apps.)
PermBlocker.
Of course, all above options require you to be rooted.
There's an alternative if you don't have root or you don't want to root.
You must first download the app to phone or PC and obtain the apk file. Then, you can get an apk editor and modify the manifest xml to omit the internet access. Afterwards, you can install the modified apk.

LBE needs root I think.

Paranoia mode indeed! That about sums it up
Thanks john and specially nibras for detailed answer, I now have at least 2 options..

I'm also in paranoia mode since I discovered that each time I start 'GO SMS' it connects to .cn servers...
But:
- I've seen the LBE needs full internet access why ?!?!

Notification service to send notifications to desktop

I work as a software developer and for the better part of my day I'm looking at my work screen and my phone is on silent. Because of this I miss SMS's and missed call notifications sometimes for hours. I have been looking for an app that allows me to push some, if not all, notifications raised by my phone to my desktop.
I tried growl but that requires a local web server which I cannot obviously run at work. I also do not have access to my work network from my phone because wifi is restricted. So I need a solution that sends these notifications over the web.
Is there an app or a service that can push notifications from android to my desktop?
MightyText might be the app you are looking for.

Thanks, didn't realize mighty app also gave missed call notifications. Is there any other app that gives me native windows notifications?
MightyText fits my needs. Havent tried any other such app.
Android Desktop Notifications.
You can even choose which app notifications you want to be forwarded to the pc. However, for SMS and missed call notifications only, Mightytext is the best. Good luck

[Q] how do i replace the stock sms app with go sms pro?

i want to replace the stock sms app on my k900 with go sms pro. how do i do this? i've already checked in the go sms app that it be the default messaging app but i still get double sms notifications and the stock sms app is still active. i can't find anything in the system or messaging settings that would normally turn off the notifications for the stock sms app just like in my past htc's and xperias.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
In the messaging setting you can turn off auto message checking and popup windows and notifications. I haven't tried but I think that should work. Goodluck

i already did all of that but still i get double notifications and messages. it seems that the system still prioritizes the stock sms app over a 3rd party one despite having the 3rd party app be explicitly the default SMS app. i've had partial success with textra. i still get notifications from the stock sms app but at least not a double message and i could just ignore the unopened text messages from the stock app until i have to open them at a later time. but i still wish there was a way of totally replacing the stock sms app. this app seems to be bundled/attached to the dialer and contacts app instead of it being separate and only able to "talk" to the dialer and contacts app. seems lenovo doesn't want the user to install any other app that tries to replace the ones that lenovo put in place. for shame in this.
in any case, this'll be my first AND last lenovo phone. i've been badly burned by this very simple yet intolerable (for me) experience. i think this goes against the android ethos of being "open" considering it's a "goolge" android OS.
can this problem be solved by rooting the phone?
No. The only way is to hard remove the app from the system/app folder. But you will be doing that on your own and at your own risk. It's not recommended..

Coded from a Clover Trail+ Machine!
Found a simpler solution it's almost stupid. It was staring at me the whole time. Went to settings>apps>contact manager. Unchecked notifications then pushed force stop and then disable. Replacd my dialer/contact manager with go contacts ex. Now, I'm happy. Didn't have to go through the mess of rooting and flashing a custom rom.

Try add new contact. Works? Probably no. If you want add new contact, you must enable contact manager again and disable after adding. A little uncomfortable. Do not delete contact manager (ideafriend) from system/app!
ist for dialer, contacts, SMS messaging and call log. The unfortunate solution. unfortunately.

it's quite the opposite everything's working fine. go contacts replaced the stock contacts manager flawlessly. i already added 2 contacts and edited more than half a dozen old ones. received and made phone calls without a hitch. like the old lenovo contacts manager never existed in the 1st place! now i can use my k900 with much more tolerance until i could to sell it ASAP and get me back to an xperia.

Interesting. When I unchecked Show notifications, press the Force Stop and Disable in Settings / Apps / All, calling through third-party application goes normally (tested to Go contacts and Ex dialer), but using these applications not join a new contact, I can not edit an existing contact. It just goes through the built-in Contact Manager. The same if I add a contact via SMS third-party application (for example Go SMS Pro).
Really? Hasn't happened to me yet (unable to edit) I'm using go contacts pro as my dialer and contact manager. Like i said before, i added and edited contacts without problems. Hmmm...

What specific functions to which are you referring? I use Hangouts and I can reply to text messages, using Gear Notification Extender.
I use an app called MySMS to sync SMS/MMS messages between my Mac, PC, and iPad. The Android app requires it to be the default messaging app for full functionality. If I set it as default, and attempt to send an SMS through the watch, I get a message saying it cannot send because the Messages app on the phone must be the default.
You can still send text from the watch using Messages if you don't make it default. When the watch asks to change the default app, I choose "Cancel" and it still goes to the next screen. I create new text that way without issues.
Does that work only for sending with the watch's number or for when it's connected via bluetooth or remotely to the phone as well?
Frankly I haven't tried the remote connection. If I sent a text with Bluetooth, it uses my phone's number.

Question List of applications that can be uninstalled with adb commands

Can we post here the list of safe apps to uninstall with ADB commands?
I just downloaded APK Extractor from the Play Store - I looked for any logos of the apps I would never use and removed them. I can't list every single one as they're all gone now. I only had an issue uninstalling the SMS messaging app. Had to reinstall that one as the system automatically defaults to it. Without it installed, I wasn't getting any texts coming through. Lame!
Great info !
Then uninstal chinese apps is easy and without risk with Apk Extractor ?
Only keep the original sms app and choose an other that we choice for Message (for me it's Signal).

I don't think any messaging apps will work (Google Messages, Signal, etc.) because the Chinese ROM will force default to Oppo Messaging as soon as you receive an SMS/MMS.

How do you mean Oppo forces the official app Mail? It doesn't for me?
I've been using Blackberry Inbox for mail, and it works great and it is the default mail app on my Find N. I've actually uninstalled the official app (just using the normal app uninstall, not adb). So it doesn't force a different mail app for me, and in fact the official mail app is no longer on the phone.
I try now to uninstal official app Mail but in default app for mail it was already AquaMail but no notification for AquaMail ...

I must admit, I have notifications turned off for Blackberry Inbox, as I find mail notifications annoying (as I get too many), and I check my mail regularly anyhow. But you should get mail notifications if you make sure that AquaMail is one of the 5 apps you allow to auto startup, allow it to run in the background, and you turn off battery optimization for the app. Another tip would be to pin the app in task view so that when the memory is cleaned it stays in memory.

I haven't tried as I'm fine using the stock SMS/MMS app, as I don't use SMS/MMS much (mostly Whatsapp/Wechat/Telegram, etc. these days). As I've said somewhere else, I usually try not to fight a new phone, but work with it, and the stock messages app works quite well, and has nice features like tap to fill when you receive a auth code, etc.
There is a setting to change the default messaging app; but others have had problems trying to use another messaging app or dialer/phone app as default (I assume did try setting the default to something else) and apparently it resets to the system default? Worth a go though.
Failing that, you could probably get it working using the same method that the community got the Nova Launcher working (combination of adb and tasker) -
Nova Launcher lock rotation brave toggle desktop-mode (Using Tasker)
Using Tasker to change the default launcher for OPPO FIND N, by canceling Oppo's method to enforce their launcher. -- Requirements 1- Tasker (paid ~3$). --- Autoinput (2$), for Brave desktop/phone mode auto switiching. 2- Launcher of your...

Again, sorry I haven't tried that, as I don't use group SMS/MMS messaging; I use Whatsapp/Wechat/Telegram for that type of group messaging. In the UK MMS messages are usually an additional (sometimes expensive) cost, and so it has never really taken off here as far as I'm aware; and everyone I know uses Whatsapp, etc. for that kind of thing.
I ended up disable-user the following apks :
package:com.coloros.karaoke
package:com.heytap.music
package:com.iflytek.speechsuite
package:com.coloros.weather.service
package:com.oplus.apprecover
package:com.oplus.pay

package:com.heytap.reader
package:com.coloros.oshare

package:com.nearme.instant.platform
package:com.coloros.floatassistant
package:com.coloros.childrenspace

package:com.coloros.remoteguardservice
and uninstalled following:
com.heytap.cloud
com.finshell.wallet
cn.wps.moffice.lite
com.oppo.store
com.baidu.input_oppo
com.opos.ads
com.coloros.assistantscreen
com.heytap.browser
com.heytap.pictorial
com.heytap.smarthome
com.coloros.favorite
com.oplus.safecenter
The preinstalled music, video, reader, wallet and browser are pretty much just adware, get rid of them as quick as possible
These security apk are forcing you to input oppo account password to install apk, but please keep in mind, disable or uninstall them all-together: com.oplus.vip(yes it's related to apk installation), com.oplus.appdetail, com.coloros.securityguard, com.coloros.phonemanager, they are calling each-other when you install apps, by just removing some of them, you are risking breaking apk installer functionality, but I've tested after get ride of them, all non-sense just disappeared
And I personally will never use it's build-in password manager, voice assistant, float ball navigator, cloud service, file manager and baidu input so I disabled them, keep those you want
One thing, adb can't disable or uninstall built-in app store, and in some situation, I use it to install some Chinese specific apps.

You don't delete them in the app. You have to delete them using a command prompt on your PC. The app just tells you the package name of each app so you know what to delete.

Can't receive authentication txt messages

My wife's s21 recently (one or two months) stopped receiving verification text messages from banks/SS etc. When the target phone number is changed to MY phone the messages come through just fine. We are both on AT&T and have the latest Samsung software (mine is a Note 20). We've made sure that there are no blocked numbers in her contacts.
Is there a SIM based setting that can cause this?
Can the carrier block MMS on her line from commercial sources? She can receive MMS from personal contacts.
We've been through the Samsung/AT&T tech support gauntlet but so far have not found the right person to help.
Try installing The Google - developed Messages app on the problem phone and making it the default SMS client.

Well I tried the Google Messages App and still had the same difficulty
I've had trouble using Google Message's "Chat features", also known as Rich Communication Services (RCS), when my virtual private network (VPN) is active. If I stop or pause using the VPN then RCS seems to work. But with my VPN active the "Status" under Chat features shows "Connecting...". Given the choice between VPN and RCS, I've decided VPN is more useful. So I turn off "Enable chat features."
Try searching using term "Android" "RCS" and "VPN" and you may hit some useful links to read. If you do not use a VPN then you can probably ignore my entire posting.
I just want to be sure: have you made sure that you have made the Google Messages app the default client?
Go into the App Info for Messages.
And then tap on "Messaging app"
Be sure that you have selected the correct icon. (For some dumb reason there is no text to identify the names or developers of the respective messaging apps.)
