Hows the Galaxy S2 Flash Preformance? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking about picking up a Galaxy Note when it comes out. I notice that the Note and the S2 have similar processors so I was wonder how does the S2 perform when playing flash video?
Right now I have a Captivate which can only run flash at a disappointing 320p. I would love to run it at 720p on the Note... Maybe that's just a dream tho

I just played a 1080p flash video sample on my sgs2, no stuttering or lag, streaming off mobile data connection as well.
The note should be fine, the GPU in the sgs2 is very powerful anyway so it shouldn't have to much trouble with the extra resolution.

[Q] Galaxy s2 vs galaxy note?

Hi dear,
I'm going to get either Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Note.
The price difference between them is quite big..
GS2 is 730 NZD and Galaxy Note is 1199 NZD(as its just released?)
Do you think galaxy note has that much worthy?
What do think guys?
It depends whether you want a phone or a small tablet that can make calls. I've handled a prototype Note and it's not something you can comfortably use with one hand.

Oh is it?
But I do have iPad 2..
What I like from Galaxy Note is the high resolution display.
It Is awesome I gues.. As I was iPhone 4 user so I do care the density of the screen. It should be clear and crisp.
It's also an inch bigger, and uses PenTile matrix, both of which detract from the 1280x720 resolution's pixel density. So really, it's about a wash in terms of clarity compared to the 4.3" SGS2.
Then there's always the Galaxy Nexus, also 1280x720, but half an inch smaller than the Note. Sadly though, it's not running Exynos/Mali, but it does come with ICS and a guarantee of being at the head of the queue for updates and custom ROMs.

That's what I concerned.
Galaxy note and s2 will get ICS at some time in Q2 in 2011..
That's too late, right?
Galaxy note has better specs, but sgs2 is better for size for the main user

Galaxy Note are for users who 'CBF' carrying an eight-ten inch tablet, but still wants all the power and resolution necessary for web browsing and movie watching.
Galaxy S II will be intended for gamer (running on Full screen), who prefer web browsing on the go while making phone calls and sending text messages.
The Galaxy Note beats or matches in the SGS2 in everything. The only reason why someone should choose the SGS2 over the Note is because of the price and size.

But, galaxy note is a PHONE not only a device that can be necessary for web browsing and movie watching..
I feel playing game on my iPad is better than on galaxy s2 in terms of screen size though which means game on galaxy note will be much more fun than on galaxy s2.

The problem as mentioned above, Running standard android games on HD screen doesn't make it run FULL screen.
Yes galaxy note is a phone, but a 4.3 inch SGSII is already a humongous phone. A 5.6' phone doesn't make it ideal for making phone calls
Galaxy SII v Note
I'm stoked about the Note. I currently have a Galaxy S and S II. I was waiting for the Galaxy Tab 7.7, but the Note may do the job. I do design work and I am excited to use the stylus to cut and paste images, do simple drawings, etc.
The other thing I don't like about the S and SII is that when typing emails, I can only see about 1 or two lines of text that I'm typing. I think with the Note, you'll see more.
The biggest problem with the Note is the price. For me it's about $850 USD. That's just too much.
I am also considering buying a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. I swore I'd never go back to Verizon but the Nexus should have their 4 G as well as the 4G radios for AT&T and T-Mobile.
Samsung is so prolific at spitting out these phones that it's hard to choose. They even have a 4" screened model with a full QWERTY. Not too shabby!
hi, you could also wait foe the sgs2 lte hd, its gonna have a 4,65 inches display with super amoled plus hd display, 1.5 ghz cpu 1gb ram, 16gb onboard memory and so on its supossed to be available in december.
i've got the sgs2 international and can't be happier.
if you are using the sgs1 or 2 you could use nitrality to change de dpi from 240 to 182 and get more on screen space for wrintting emails and whatever you want, i did it and looks even better.
the note, is realy nice, played with it at ifa here in berlin, realy nice device, and if you wear a jacket always or most of the time it schouln't be a problem, but i would say is to big for jeans pockets, or maybe not, but it would big the risk to break it probably.
Im waitig for the 7.7

Thanks for the input. I don't think we'll see a Galaxy SII in the states with LTE anytime soon. AT&T and TMO just got their SIIs and neither is capable of LTE.
I think I'll most likely try the Verizon Nexus Prime because it will have (850/1700/1900/2100) 3g and Verizon Lte and then get the Galaxy S III next year. If cash permits, I'll get the Note too. If it had quad band 3g and Verizon LTE, I'd just buy the Note.

Hi,
If you like to listen to Music on your phone, then please dont buy SGS2, it has a crappy Yamaha audio codec. Fankly I think that is the only disadvantage of SGS2.
I usually browse and listen to music, I find the music to be sub-par when compared to my Ipod.
Better go for a superphone with Wolfson Audio codec.
Check which audio codec is present in Galaxy Note or Go for Galaxy Nexus, I think it has Wolfson audio codec (as Nexus S had the same)...
Or one more option is the New Slim Motorola Droid Razr (7.1mm), which even below advantages :
- Check its audio codec, it must be wolfson I guess
- has a better battery (1780MAh)
- Higher resolution than SGS2 (540 x 960)
- Spash resistant
- Metal casing but still 127Gm
- Might not have the pink spot that SGS2 has.
- Might not have the yellow tint effect on screen that SGS2 has.
- hdmi port
- comes with 2.3.5 and guaranteed ICS support coming for this model
There are too many advantages that Droid Razr has over SGS2.
How crappy is Yamaha codec?
Is audio even throughout the spectrum?
Head over to anadtech for a detailed review of SGS2 audio performance... Below is the link:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4686/samsung-galaxy-s-2-international-review-the-best-redefined/13
He clearly says Yamaha audio codec is not a good audio codec (compared to Wolfson...), and wolfson is far better (which we find in SGS1, Nexus S....)
I am using SG-note.. For last few days ..
So fare i thing its kind of mini tablet.which works batter than all small tablet.. I think it will be unfaire to compare SG-note vs SGSII.
SGSII is the best smartphone for me ... Thanks to samsung ..
What can i say abt SG-note it just too smart phone..
I think you should go for SGNote.

Wait a few months after the note has been superseded by yet another Samsung device and you're be able to pick one up for a lot less, nothing wrong with the sgs2 and won't be out specced for some time, Blimey I remember the days when all PDAs had a stylus much better, that would be the only reason I would be interested in getting a note
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Just now checked in Engadget, Galaxy Note has the same Yamaha audio codec as SGS2.
If you are a audio freak or even a casual audio listener, I do not suggest going to SGS2 or Galaxy Note. Try either Galaxy Nexus or Moto Droid Razr.

[Q] Galaxy s2 vs galaxy nexus :future update, camera, screen

I know this have been discussed numerous times but i dig into different forums but i don't find what i need.
I want to know which is better between the two in performance. I know that galaxy nexus has lower specs but is optimized for ICS and galaxy s2 Have higher specs and will get ICS but i want to know who will perform better in the future OS (android 5.0,6.0 etc....) may be it is a rom or official one and will handle games smoothly?(
I had seen a video on youtube- a comparison between GS2 and GN on gaming. Asphalt 6 is the game and the GN is able to run the games a little smoother than GS2. knowing that gs2 has more powerful gpu how is that possible?
How well does the GN's camera compete with GS2's camera? is the difference really huge in quality and details with GS2?
Lastly, I know the GN's screen is HD but a pentile one and the s2 is not pentile. Does the screen in the GN is obviously better than GS2 (like on the picture and watching movie that on GN's screen difference with s2 is very noticeable?) or does the difference is not that noticeable unless you look at it very near?
i know it's a bit long but i will say thank you in advance for clarifying these to me.
Wait for Galaxy S3, its coming in May 3rd.
performance... i think when do you want more performance, you should choose galaxy nexus.

Reason?
Korean Galaxy s2 -Why did you choose GN even though it has a lower specs?
OK I'll take a minute. I have the Gnex and my wife the S2.
OK for sure the s2 has a bit faster CPU and gpu. But to be honest nobody notices the difference. Both are fast and smooth. I put aokp on my wife's s2 yesterday and it's fast as hell. Just like the Gnex. What really sucks is that the Gnex doesn't have a micro SD slot.
But the main difference and the biggest is the screen and the camera. The super AMOLED HD screen is absolutely amazing the colors and definition are the best. The camera from the s2 has 8MP but the fotos and videos from the Gnex are just better. Fotos and videos on the s2 just look a bit weak compared to the gnex .
And for the future I think that the Gnex will handle the updates just a bit better because of the plain vanilla

[Q] Possible to port Galaxy Note ROMs to Galaxy Player?

Aside from the fact that the note has slightly higher specs plus a mechanical button, aren't they nearly identical?
There are several ROMs in that section of the forums I would love to try but I don't have time to test nor do I want to brick my device. Although I could always restore from a CWM backup if that situation ever arises.

No. Don't try that lol I think "slightly higher specs" overlooks the fact that it's meant for a 1280 x 720 screen. Our galaxy can only output at 800 x 480 with a single core processor as opposed to a dual/quad (depending on version) processor. The two phones are not a like at all. Size of the phone doesn't constitute equality in software/hardware terms.
Thought so. At first I assumed the note was just the player with calling abilities. Thanks

Correct. The Samsung Galaxy Player 4/5 is basically a super-sized Galaxy S. There is actually on very minor differences between the two (the SGPs have much better overall performance for reasons).
I really hope Samsung decides to re-re-fresh the SGP line up with something that could turn heads... I mean throw SuperAMOLED on an Media player with a little higher resolution (maybe 720p) and I'd be sold asap.

Thinking of buying i9300... how's development?

I have an SGS2. I realize the SGS2 has been a pain to develop for because it has no Nexus brother with similar hardware (I'm not talking about the i9100G, the regular GT-i9100).
However, since it's the most popular Android phone in the world, and the Note shared the same hardware, and now the i9300 uses Exynos SOC again, I see that CM9 got up and running on the SGS3 surprisingly fast. I'm not sure where in dev they are, but it seems most of the major features are working. Would I be incorrect to say that SGS2 development helped a lot with preparing the SGS3?
If this is the case, would it be safe to say that jumping from SGS2 to SGS3 wouldn't be a big loss in terms of losing custom rom features. In particular I'm just concerned with CM9. The nicer screen and a notification LED are certainly very important to me.
If you like stock roms or flashing rom then you might get the the Nexus instead, its made for development purposes. The Nexus is way ahead of the S3 in roms availability, and I'm not talking about S3 roms that just rehash Samsung stock firmware. There is a CM10 preview (as of writing) and its running pretty stable.
On performance side, once you run Jelly Bean on Nexus compared to CM10 on the S3, there isn't really much of difference, the S3 might win in some instances. They both can handle 720p MKV videos smoothly. The S3 does have a more powerful GPU so if you mainly play games on your phone, then get an S3. Running FPSE emulator on the S3, I got up to 500frames per seconds in games, that's faster than my in PC. Also the S3 camera is so much better. But if software is your main objective than I'd say get the Nexus, unless you want the Samsung proprietary features.
I had to choose between keeping the Nexus or the S3 and I sold my Nexus, but I will most likely sell the S3 once the new Nexus phones arrive.
Buy sgs3 and flash cm10 to it, it's development goes very fast, one new build per day.
I quess that sgs3 cm9 has same features that on sgs2 cm9.

not much point in going nexus over my sgs2 except for software i figure, but the sgs3 is quad with much better battery life too.
i would certainly wait for a next generation nexus but we're still 4-5 months away... heh, and the past 2 Nexus phones seem to be the last of their era... the Nexus S was the same as a 6month old SGS1, and the GNex was about equal to an SGS2 except for the better screen.
Current development will stop Jelly Bean released soon by Samsung .
See XDA tomorrow .

What should I get? Galaxy S2 Plus or the S3 Mini

Okay I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this. If it isn't and I'm breaking some rules I can only apologize. Since this involves two phones I might post this in two places, also I've asked the same on other forums.
I'm in the market for my first smartphone and I'm on a budget, where I live phones are really expensive so the latest and greatest is out of the question! For example the Galaxy SIII is over 900 USD and no sensible person would spend that much on a phone.
There are two phones that I'm looking at that fit in my budget, the Galaxy S3 Mini and the Galaxy S2 Plus. And I ask the experts, what should I get?
What I'll be using it for other than calling people is text, emails, web browsing and Google Maps. Although it has to have a decent camera and I see the S2+ has the better camera.
I've done some research on my own and it seems that S2+ has better specs except for maybe the GPU. The S3 Mini has 1 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 NovaThor U8420 and has a Mali-400 GPU. The S2 Plus has a Dual-core 1.2 GHz Broadcom BC28155 and Broadcom VideoCore IV GPU. Not heard anything about the Broadcom chips so I don't know if it is better even if it's clocked higher.
I asked a similar question at another forum where I was recommended the S2+ because even though the S3 Mini has a better pixel density the S2+ screen looks sharper because it uses Super AMOLED Plus screen technology.
What do you say?
Go for the good old s2 (not plus) has a dual core 1.2 exynox pro and a mali-400 (?) Gpu. Has the S-Amoled plus panel and has jelly bean leak (but is super stable)

Ok, thanks. I'll put it there.
Depending on where you live in the world and what baseband your cell carrier uses, you should look into the chinese knock off phones.
They can look like any phone you want. S3 or even s4. They all cost around 200 usd but try to find one with an mtk589 quad core.
Fastcardtech.com sells them.
Or search HDC phones on youtube.
You can also find them on other sites. People just say good things about fastcardtech. They do not have 4g though.
The two samsung phones your looking at, are in about the same category as hdc. Just probably will cost more because of the name.

S2+ will be a better deal.
My friend got the S3 mini, and the Camera is not up to the mark. The S2+ is better that way. Pixels can be seen on the s3 mini screen, harder to see on s2+.
I would pay more attention to the GPU rather than the CPU. If you're into gaming, then you'd wanna see if your favorite games run smooth on a particular GPU. The CPUs seem pretty good for both (I don't see any scope for lag at all, thanks to the 1GB RAM and dual core along with project butter)...
Since I'm pretty close to my friend who has the s3 mini I have used it considerably ( I have an s2).
These are the disadvantages of the S3 MINI only:
- It is atrocious that there is no automatic brightness! Brightness has to be adjusted manually in different lighting conditions.
- There is no noise-cancellation technology to cut off background noise from your side, during a phone call.
- The camera's burst mode is horrid and not usable. There is motion blur in the captured images! (That defeats the purpose of burst shot)
- No 1080p recording, lack of detail on front camera.
- It isn't really comparable to the S3. You're getting probably only 40-60% of S3 features. Don't buy the S3 mini simply because it has the S3 name tag. It is a different device. If you like it for what it is, then buy it.
But I personally prefer the S2+ as it looks more masculine (assuming you're a guy), it has a better camera, better screen (rich blacks, very colorful), and simply because I have an S2 (Lol jk )
The best thing you could do is to try these 2 devices at a local mobile store and compare them patiently. I know how it hurts when we buy something and then regret it, so take your time.

i had the S3 mini before i had buyed the S2.
What is good: is fast with the Stock-Rom in Version 4.1.2, all work fine and had a good prize...
What is bad? No Support for CyanogenMod, the driver-sources are not complete out. And exacly this was my argument to selling by ebay and buy a S2
I have it only buyed, while my LG P990 are broken and i require a phone for work.
My fazit: Its only a good phone when its have fully CyanogenMod

Thanks for that brilliant reply! I'm sorry for keeping this thread alive but I did want to respond.
The camera on the S2+ is certainly attractive. So that alone makes the S2+ tempting!
As for the CPU and GPU they're similar in both devices although it seems that the CPU in the S3 Mini is benchmarked higher but I'm not sure it's actually any better. It's certainly clocked lower.
The GPU on the S3 Mini is better when it comes to games, I can't imagine I'll be playing many graphics heavy games if any so I'm sure in the end the VideoCore will do nicely even though it's rubbish for big games. lol
Neither the S2+ and S3 Mini are like their big brothers but would you say the S2+ is more like the original S2 than the S3 Mini is to the original S3?
Anyway, I was playing around with and Galaxy Ace 2 at work and I found that one really fast and snappy lol so I'm sure the S2+ or the S3 Mini will be brilliant for me LOL

The S2+ camera is good according to reviews. It performs well even in low light and while using flash. Although you can expect noise (image grain) and slightly shaky videos.
There isn't much to complain when it comes to the Broadcom GPU... The old S2 had color banding problems with Mali 400, MAYBE that might not be there on S2+. Also I've seen a number of videos on YouTube in which people with S2+ were playing high performance games with no lag, although one person found a graphic glitch in one particular game (Modern Combat 4). But since you said that you won't really play intensive games, you should be more than happy with the GPU.
Don't go by the benchmarks when it comes to performance. These numbers are easily manipulated. A manufacturer can easily tweak devices to give better benchmark scores just to increase sales. On paper, the S2+ has a better CPU than S3 Mini. Don't worry.
When it comes to similarities, the S2 and S2+ are very similar when compared to the S3 and S3 Mini (which are day and night).
These are the differences between s2 and s2 plus:
- s2 plus gets only 8GB storage over 16 or 32GB in s2.
- s2 plus gets a faster camera.
- s2 plus has optional NFC depending on your region.
- s2 plus gets GLONASS which helps you get faster GPS locks.
- s2 plus is slightly heavier, has a little softer loudspeaker than s2, different GPU and CPU.
Hopefully Samsung might have ironed out all the defects/mistakes they made with the S2. (Pink spot in camera, yellow tint on left side of screen, stutter while recording HD video in varying light conditions, etc.)
But I'm sure there won't be any problems with the S2 plus.
Out of curiosity, I wonder which country you stay in...

Of course, I don't expect to get a camera on phone that has the same quality as a proper camera.
Yes, I've seen similar videos. I rarely play games but if I do, I have a computer
I'm in Iceland, where top end phones cost around 1000 USD!

OMG, $1000 can get me a Macbook! You can shop for phones when you go overseas next time.

Yeah, it's not cheap living on an island in the North Atlantic. HAHAHA. No idea how much the Macbook is here, probably around 1800-2000.
