Is there a mod or an app to get manual focus? I could really use this when taking photos. Auto focus is good to an extent, but when I need something close I watch it go from a perfect focus to blurry and it's really annoying

You know we have a two-stage camera button, right? Half way down focuses, all the way down takes the picture. So just get up close to your subject, half press, and then adjust your length to match the depth of field you're looking for.
I don't know of any apps that can hold the aperture at a fixed place though.
Like I said in my first post, I do that and watch as it focuses beautifully on the subject but then blurs it back out. Try it. Use the keys on your keyboard to take test shots and toy with it, it's quite annoying

You just touch on your screen where or what you want your camera to focus on. You notice the grid will move. Then snap the pic. You can also turn off auto focus in the settings. Im pretty sure there is no actual manual focus mode.
The op is right, the camera auto focus is stupid on close up.

Have you ever actual done those things when trying to take a photo close up? Because I have and guess what, it does the EXACT same thing as pressing the shutter button and without auto focus on, it still focuses
Yea agrees with op. Sometimes you get lucky but usually touch focus and half pressing the shutter button will focus then before it takes the picture it will lost its focus

Guys I have noticed that my Atrix does not focus on something when I'm close to it like 5"-10". Basically I get blury image in camcorder and camera view. Is this normal?

When using the camera, try setting it to "Macro" in the Scenes selection. As for the camcorder, it might take a little time for it to focus on something up close.
I tried macro setting already but it didn't make a difference. How close can you get to lets say page with text on it so you don't lose focus?

I can get right up to 3 inches away, which is about as good as you're going to get with a camera on a phone. Lighting has a lot to do with it as well I think.
well I got the camera to work, I didn't hold the button to focus duh! but the video camera still does not focus upclose. Is the focus automatic or is there a way to focus manualy? How close can you video something with focus?

I think someone has mentioned before that the camcorder on the Atrix is NOT auto focus or continuous focus. It probably won't do close ups.

Recently I've noticed that it takes about 5 (!) seconds from the minute I press the camera button till the shot is actually being taken.
Anyone noticed it?

Has to do with the focus. It needs to focus to get a nice and sharp picture.

But also when I set the focus to macro or face detection it takes a lot of time
Ive had this issue also. The shutter time is horrible. I have an app called tasker which allows me to change the amount of time it takes for the camera to take the picture once i press the button.

Unfortunately, tasker is like 6bucks, but well worth it. It does WAY more than just fix the shutter lag. As far as i know, there isnt an app to fix just the lag on the cam. I havent found one anyways..
Take your phone outside when it's bright. Take a shot. The focus and capture should be near instantaneous. If not, then it's a hardware fault and you should have your phone replaced.
If it works, then the reason your cam was slow is due to insufficient lighting. You can't expect any camera to focus and capture instantly in low-light environments. Maxing out the ISO setting will help with the shutter speed but you'll end up with disgusting noisy pictures.
How does Tasker fix the shutter lag???
I use fast burst camera app. It can take 5 pics in quick burst or just single shots. Photos are taken the instant you hit the button

5 pics burst, the image size is disgustingly small from what I hear. But the single pic shot, is that full resolution?
Okay, I've had this phone for a couple of months now, and the one thing that keeps bugging me is the following:
Whenever I enable autofocus, it doesn't autofocus. I need to manually tap the screen to focus. I've been searching a bit on the net, and I can't find anyone having the similar problem when taking still-pictures.
If it actually is designed in a way that we actually need to tap the screen for the camera to focus, why would you call it AUTOfocus?
If the camera is supposed to autofocus by itself when taking still-pictures, what can I do to fix this problem?

you just misunderstand what means of AF. and it will still do AF even if you not tap the screen first, but will take the center for the focus point

Your camera should focus automatically, if you are not getting the green box before after touching the shoot button, then there is some problem. You can try resetting your camera settings, and post back the result here.

Okay, my bad. I have completely misunderstood the meaning of AF. After owning a HTC Desire with AF, which did continuous AF before taking the picture, I thought AF meant that the camera focused by itself before taking a picture or tapping the screen.
I want to disable the shutter button from focusing....I only want it to take the pic not refocus....the first stage of the two stage camera button focuses on the object...the second stage or button snaps the pic....I want to disable the first stage of focusing...thanks

Without knowing an immediate and direct answer for you, a plausible work-around may be to touch the screen to have the camera focus elsewhere, then take the photo. Unless your concern isn't with the area of focus but instead with the mechanical lens.
Alternatively, you can set the focus mode to infinity, and prevent auto-focus and motion. However in this case, nothing close-by will automatically focus unless you touch the screen to manually focus on it.
That's the point I want to use the screen to focus and zoom the first stage focus button does not effectively focus so I just want to disable it...use the screen to focus then the button tho snap the pic...ill try the infinite option though...

I am getting really frustrated with the auto-focus "feature" on this phone. Is there any way to disable it so I can actually focus on what I want to take a picture of? Some sort of macro mode would be super helpful. Is there a setting somewhere that I missed?
Do you have the options on the screen when you take a photo? Otherwise, just tap on your target to take the picture with them/it in focus. Otherwise, use the Magic Focus feature to adjust focus after the picture is taken.
Aside from that, to do manual focus, you'll have to use another app, like Focal or any other camera app.

Put the camera in the mode where the shutter is on the side. Then you just tap on whatever you want to focus on in the screen, it focuses than you hit the shutter button.

Idk. But u must try focal app for more difficult shots. It gives tons of exposure zoom and filter options.
Okay, I finally got it. Thanks very much. At first I was never leaving it in "option" mode, I would always go back out of it before taking pictures. I totally missed this until you mentioned it.
To clarify in case anyone else is unclear:
-click the "3 dots" button at the top of the camera screen to open up the options mode.
-In addition to the various mode, settings, etc. buttons at the top, there will also be a shutter button at the bottom.
-In this mode, the shutter button will take the picture, and touching anywhere else will create a focal point.
I went all through the pdf manual and didn't see anything at all about this.

Still cant find a good option to make a photo when i have even a bit light towards me. It shows totally dark at the shadow part. Exposure doesnt go as i want. Does it have also a Manual Focus?

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but if you tap the three-dot so that the options come up, wherever you tap on the screen I believe is where it'll focus on, then use the camera button at the bottom to take the picture.

I know what u mean but still doesnt make a big difference about focusing when i want. And i meant...exposure. If there is a tree in nature and is sunny weather and under the tree is dark coz of shadow...and i want to focus exposure in that dark part...coz there is a flower or a rabbit...this exposure doesnt work. I dont mind if the tree becomes overexposured. I hope u understand me. Thank u for replying.

If the manually choosing where to focus in the stock camera app isn't doing the job, I'd try a third-party camera app. It sucks it won't use the laser focus but there's a chance a more professional app would do the job. At least if you buy a good app you can test it right away and refund it quickly (limit was 15 minutes but it might've increased again - I can't keep track). Good luck!
