[Q] Why isn't there many developers making roms for the photon? - Motorola Photon 4G

I have my MoPho rooted but there are only 2 roms for it. If you go over and look at the Atrix developers forum they have a ton of support.
The phones are similar, why isn't there much rom development for the Photon as there is the Atrix.
Does anyone know if the Cyanogen Mod is going to be made to work for the photon?

before anyone else says it. GO LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP AND MAKE YOUR OWN ROM
just saving everyone the trouble. i dont really mean it lol

We got source last week and the devs disappeared we will have new roms real soon
Sent from my PHOTON blaster!

easier said than done. About 13yrs ago I was into development with computers and stuff but a LOT has changed since then. I wouldn't know where to start now days.

Well that would be useful if I had time to learn everything and create roms myself.

the sgs2 for sprint was announced. this phone was horribly placed in terms of release dates. a lot of people jumped on the evo3d bandwagon, now the sgs2 is coming out soon and not too long after is the release of the new nexus.
once the epic touch is released expect these forums to die down a lot more... unless the et4g sucks... in which we might get a few more users

I heard the et4g kills baby kittens. Does that help?

I just got the Photon and am going to work on porting CyanogenMod to it... so expect that as an option when I finish it. Not sure how difficult it will be since this is my first Moto device.

This is the first phone that I was happy with out of the box. But with development, well at my age, its better than sex! Lol

I'm out of thanks for the day, but you will get one soon enough from me I'm sure. That being said, how hard is 'porting' and what exactly does that mean? I think I get the idea but how is it done really?
I would love to learn how to do this. I am slowly getting into theming a little, but am no where close to releasing anything yet, first off I am a perfectionist and second I am just learning the basics now.
Would love to start reading up on the whole porting aspect of stuff.

Porting is basically making the proper changes for the rom/kernel/theme to be compatible with another device. Just do a Google search and you can find other threads talking about it.
If you don't have any code experience it will be tough going to learn. If you are already trying to learn how to theme than this is good place to start because knowing the directory structure and where things are located will help.

Yeah I do too, but I'm not going back to big red. I think that it's a Verizon exclusive so far.

no the tech sites need to read between the lines. was there a nexus being shown off around big v's hq? yea.. wanna guess why? because out of the top four carriers in teh us they are the only ones without a nexus device..
there are rumors of verizon getting a droid prime which if thats the case yet again they will be without a nexus device (cant call it something else) my guess is because they want the hardware but their carrier bloat crap on it

The photon is an awsome phone and with tegra 2 thd games it beats my gfs evo shift hands down. I tried the evo3d and wasnt impressed. Its really buggy and likes to get stuck in 3d mode. The sales rep even told me to go with the photon which was cheaper meaning less commissions. She had came from doing repairs to sales and she said the evo3d was a waste of money and told me all the horror stories they were having at the repair center with them.
I know sprint has some phones comimg out soon that are going to be better but work with what we have first.
I found my old htc tilt and it still has more dev than the photon.
Im someone who isnt all about games. I like preformance, battery life and apps to make my day more productive.

I think a lot of Sprint customers were like me... the MoPho came out, we yawned, and had zero interest in it regardless of specs because it was Motorola... and we all knew Motorola was the essence of pure toxic TiVO-ized evil in AT&T/Verizon-land. They encrypted their bootloaders in ways that couldn't be trivially cracked, and bent over backwards to lock down everything they could.
Then Google bought Motorola, the sun came out, the birds started singing, the sourcecode got released, and suddenly the MoPho became interesting.

So development gonna happen or no

Just wondering what you all thought about the outlook of this phones development....I know its early but....do you all think its gonna be booming or dead when we get the bootloader unlocked.
Kinda nice taking a break from crack flashing IMO.

Oops I just stepped on one of your crickets LOL! If only some of the development knew how good this photon actually is... this is one rock solid piece of equipment and would be a monster with some good development behind it! Omg it would be awesome if the bootloader could be unlocked!
I have my doubts that the photon will have much if any device support. There are a lot of development for HTC devices but Motorola has been slower to gaining as much popularity. Truth is this photon is the best piece of hardware I've ever owned! Plus with the Nvidia Tetra 2, 16gb internal memory, AWESOME radios and AWESOME speakers/call quality, this phone should be on the priority list for bootloader unlocking and root. How can we help push the envelope to get some development interested in jumping onboard with the Motorola Photon?
Looks to me like there is already a decent amount of developers here. I think once there is an unlocked bootloader the scene will blow up. This phone has too much potential to just let it sit as is. I mean, it got root done in 2-3 days from release.
Think no one is in a big hurry since there are talks of an official update coming soon which could reset things (even destroy root).
First thing they need to do is figure out a way to root without the need for a docking station in the mean time.
Once Motorola unlocks the bootloader, then things will pick up and more development can occur on the phone. I am sure there are many potential developers that are going to jump on board once this happens. It is very hard for developers to test out ROMs or custom kernels without an unlocked bootloader and the source code. I myself am frustrated as well but I will be happy with just being able to root for now without a docking station.
yea.. Motorola is really holding back sales on this thing.. if the bootloader was unlocked, this would easily be as popular as the Evo OG

You will see development for one major reason if no other ...it is a world phone i.e. CDMA/GSM
While their are other dual core 4g android phones.... the Photon can do something no others dual core 4g android phone can do right now.... run on both CDMA/GSM networks... that will motivate if just to unblock the radios for the US GSM networks...The "cool" of a two network phone motivates the geekest geeks and beats 3d any day...
I was thinking about trying to get team win involved, or at least asking. Don't think it would hurt much. Who knows if anyone from there even has a photon, but they did a kick ass job on the 3vo. Anyone already try getting ahold of them already?

just because you don't see the section flooded with roms like the evo doesn't mean developments aren't being made...
I have been really happy with this phone just the way it is. With past phones I was always flashing roms. But then I went to the Atrix forum and watched a video of cm7 running on it. All I can say is Wow! Can't wait.
Loving this Mopho!
can you post that link please
The only popular phone I had with flashing was the moment. lol
I had the transform, the epic and now the photon....I'm patient no need for a million roms as long as theres at least 1 or 2 excellent roms.

Hope the momentum builds....
...and more and more developers start working on this phone. When I got my EVO, I came from the Moment and it was nice having a device that had 10X the support that the Moment had. I do hope that the Photon won't be like the Moment in that the only people who are working on developing for this phone are the ones who appreciate it's hardware.
In any event, I'm still waiting for the Photon to be released to employees (work for Sprint) and hope this phone gets at least half the attention the EVO received.

Regarding Guides 8/28

Unfortunately I'm moving away from the Photon, so will be discontinuing the guides. I'll poke my head in once and awhile and update any pertinent info. Time to pass on the torch...someone should begin another and request it stickied.
I enjoyed the MoPho...but one month after release it's way too quiet in here for me. I crave flashing goodness...and hear only crickets. I will be picking up the SGSII when it hits, and look forward to seeing some of you over there!
Thanks to Yay, Edgan, Kenneth, DCour, Baller, Mikey and others that have taken a stab at this great phone!
Good luck on your next phone. For me I am pretty pleased with how well this phone works stock. The two things I wanted in particular (root and webtop) were achieved amazingly quickly. While I look forward to a sexy fast custom rom with all the bells and whistles (and rock solid stability). I can wait for that, I am more then satisfied that the Photon has lived up to the hype. It's the first time a smart phone has done that for me.

You know that you are allowed to switch it out 3 times which resets your 30 days every time right? guess its too late now but yes you are allowed to do that. That's what I did. they just swap you out a new photon and reset your 30 days. lol I loved it. Does help to have a good guy at sprint to deal with also
But like I said bud, good luck and you are very welcome.
I may do the same thing. I have my girl and her mom on my account I may just give my girl the Photon and use her mom's upgrade on the SGSII. Will see how it goes first though. Really like the Photon, it has a **** ton of potential! Really too bad Motorola can't get their head out of their ass and realize that's what keeps a majority of us around.

This is rather disappointing. It's only quiet in here because the phone is still so young, bootloader was only recently unlocked. As soon as all the hardcore HTC fans start to realize this phone blows both Evo's out of the water, this place will be booming. Even if not, we have some very talented developers making feature rich stable roms. I was a flashaholic as well, but especially on phones such as the Evo well over half of the roms are just plain rubbish and aren't worth flashing. I'd hate to see that happen to the Photon and then deal with all of the people complaining that the phone doesn't work when they just loaded up half-functional software ripped from quality roms by a 12 year old.
Either way, hopefully you'll come back to this phone when we learn what major flaw the latest/greatest Samsung has. I gave up on them after all of their Android devices had major recurring defects, ones that I still see today in my tech centers. Moment/Intercept/Transform had way too little internal memory and the processor wore out quickly. Epic/Captivate/Vibrant all had borked GPS and suffered from random locking up/reboots. Nexus S 4G has terrible signal quality and terrible battery life. Replenish has been their worst yet, charging port shorts out causing it to say it's charging when it isn't and has gotten so hot that I've actually seen them brought in with melted LCD panels and it burnt the customer upon picking it up. I don't know how Samsung has avoided a lawsuit on that one. As for myself, I will not be picking up another Samsung device regardless of how amazing the specs look on paper. They can't seem to get their products fully functional.

I agree completely. I was just looking at the SGS2 reviews and whatnot for the last hour or so. I honestly think the photon already has beat it. I remember my first Samsung phone from ATT, I forget what it was even called actually. I'm sure I could look it up but it was like almost a smartphone. I mean it was, but there was no market or anything and it was just what it was.
I will be staying here unless there is just no action moving forward. But I don't see that happening because like you said this is a great phone and we have only begun to unlock the powers it has, I cannot wait to see numbers when we have a proper kernel source and a proper kernel made for us. Stock my phone has hit over 2500 in Quadrant and I know other people have gotten higher. In Linpack it is hitting higher than some of the highest numbers ever recorded for linpack. So I really can't wait to see what this thing has when it is fully unleashed! It still is just the beginning.

It seems that all the excitement has died down...

I know it's a week before Christmas and all, but it just seems (to me at least) that the forum(s) have died. I just hope this isn't' the end for the X2 and that there's still some dev action going on.
I just hope that I didn't bring anyone down, and I do appreciate our devs, and the guys working on 2nd-init.
Don't worry. Devs are hard at work. Although this isn't the most loved phone out there, we are working on it. Keep patient and we'll let you know when there are new things available for public consumption.

This phone mainly gets support from developers who have this phone and want to make it better. Other devs that develop for other phone pass over the Droid X2 because it has a locked bootloader. Which means a lot of the stuff required to run things that other phones can is locked down by the manufacturer. It doesnt give the Droid X2 a lot of options. This is why I appreciate all the devs who try their hardest to get the Droid X2 a little more awesome.
To the original post, it IS the holiday season and developers have families and all as well. They dont work for us. lol. But they haven't left us.
Is it just me or have the irc chats died down as well? Or have they just moved to another channel and I just missed the memo? lol

mastafunk set up a new channel for it. Can't say if it's been busy in there though as I haven't been around much myself lately. Early Christmas for our family here this weekend since some of the kids are going to their other half's relaticks for Christmas weekend this year. One year there, one year here.
Anyway, if you want to check it out, the new channel is #X2-AOSP.

Look, I had my week of finals which absolutely killed my development time. But now that it's over, I've started working on the phone again. Yes, there was a LOT of excitement (maybe too much) at first, but don't say that development has died. Masta seems to think so too. I warned people about getting too excited about this right away but looks like it still got out of hand. I have officially started working on CWMR and/or CM7 again and hopefully can make some progress with both of them.

Now THAT'S funny.
Verizon sat on the 2.3.4 update for 2months "testing" and "quality control"
THEN moto did the soak.
If anything if it WAS scrapped I would see us getting 2.3.7 way before 4.0
And 4.0 is most likely a dream fir us.
They didn't even care how buggy the 2.3.4 update was. And they DEFINITELY knew about it.

The sbf leak was FOUND shortly before the soak yes...u r correct there.
BUT(I believe it was mentioned in the beginning of 2.3.4sbf thread) the date attached to the sbf file was from a month or two prior. Meaning that since the sbf WAS the same as the OTA, that the build was finished a month or two BEFORE soak was even announced. Which more than likely means Verizon was "testing"(sitting) on it for a long time.
Lol...and.nothing wrong wit some blue sky dreaming...I still have slight hopes we eventually get an unlocked BL. But I know chances are most likely not lol.

Let's also remember people that developing.. modding ... theming phones is extremely time consuming and what u get when a dev finishes a project is something that makes your device better or more customized.. I am not a developer because my knowledge on a lot of the cpu information is limited at best at this point although im learning a lot on this aspect... I do theme for the droid x2 and I think it is safe to say that I have spent atleast 24 to 48 hours of working time on any of the themes I have made... furthermore when embarking on projects and I can only imagine what this feels like embarking on a project as ambitious as what dragonzkiller and others have contributed to frustration sets in... maybe these guys get this to work.. maybe they don't.. maybe they go ahead and create new roms customized to their... bottom line be grateful u have people that make this phone better
Merry christmas

Will ICS on the RAZR affect development for us DX2 users?

I'm rather new(6 months in) to the scene of flashing roms and sbf'ing and scripting and this sort of stuff. My question is this, since the Razr is Motorola's latest creation and it is said to be getting ICS starting today with an update, will this update play any role in possible development for a full blown ICS AOSP based rom (similar to CM7, I would guess) but with the elements of ICS all in one place. Without having to piece it all together to just look like ICS. Any insight on this would be cool to hear. I'm just curious, and can't upgrade until 2013
Thanks.

sir, first off you posted on the wrong forum, dx2 android dev, i ask a mod to move this to general
and tbh, i have no idea if this would affect us, but i do know the razr has an omap ti chip compared to our ****ty, locked down tegra2
I thought about where to post this and development seemed suitable. Sorry if I broke some rules or something, it just seemed like it might get more attention here being a development question and not just a general question.

which i fully understand, sir, but i dont think the razr will help us much, because of the chipset
I guess I should have clarified more, now that I think about it, I was thinking more like, would it be possible to take the pieces out of the ICS rom for the RAZR and some how incorporate them into the one of our current roms? Just different elements of the SBF file or systemui.apk. Like I said, I could be blowing smoke and sound completely ignorant about the topic, but I'm just gathering thoughts is all. And please, no need to call me sir. I'm a noob here. lol

it is my understanding that the Razr got ICS by searching project CHEESECAKE

Just different elements of the SBF file or systemui.apk. Like I said, I could be blowing smoke and sound completely ignorant about the topic, but I'm just gathering thoughts is all. And please, no need to call me sir. I'm a noob here. lol

This is kinda sorta what Dragonzkiller is doing with CM9 except he isn't pulling things directly from other systems.
I don't know how much alike the phones are but I'm willing to bet that at the very least the razrs framework might be worth glancing at.

Thanks.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Heeeeeellll No! (What? It is longer, btw! )

Quick Answer: Not like you are thinking??
We won't get Official ICS, IF dzk ever gets the time away from class, we will see a PORT of cm9(which is ICS), but we will probably 'never' get ICS or any ICS Based ROM for a while. Too much stuff to do and not a lot of devs...also, personal life gets in the way a lot over on this end of Android.
It looks like the RAZR is already on the verge of taking the back seat to whatever Motorola/Verizon have on the horizon (Droid Fighter). I get an upgrade next month and have my fingers crossed in hopes that a variant of the HTC One X will come to Verzion (I would settle for an HTC Droid Incredible 4G at this point). This locked bootloader will be the death of development in the foreseeable future, if anything. Motorola makes solid hardware but doesn't want to us to play with it. It's a damn shame.

True its a shame. The locked bootloader is a big reason I gave up on my X2. The possibilities on the phone could be endless if they'd unlock it but that will never happen cuz Motorola is Big Reds B$%ch. But dragonzkiller still might pull it off for u guys with cm9 in his spare time, and hopefully he will.

These reasons will be the same reason I end up with an HTC after my upgrade. I never though I would go to them but they have far surpassed moto in the support of the dev community. Thanks for the opinions guys.

Thats why I'm still hoping Cspire or some other smaller carrier pushes Moto to keep this MX2 updated, especially since they just added the device to their lineup a few months ago.

It's been said already, but there is no way in hell the DX/DX2 are getting ICS from Motorola. Dragonkiller is probably the best bet and I know he mentioned in another thread he had lots of personal life stuff till at least summer.
Simple answer: No one should be buying Motorola. Send them a message. The Galaxy S III should be out soon and HTC has a decent quad core in the pipeline. Stop buying Motorola phones!
My DX2 does run better then my DX did but that's only because of DK's CM7 port. If VZW's insurance company did not give me the DX2 for a replacement of the DX I had, I would have never owned this phone. It sucks you have until 2013 but with any luck a CM9 p
ort will get done. In 2013 if the world has not ended yet and the time finally comes for your upgrade, I hope you remember Motorola screwing you and not buy another Motorola device. Don't buy into the owned by Google thing, they are still the same company and play by the same rules. Have they removed the encrypted bootloader? No and they won't because Google may own them but they are not interfering with any of Motorolas business practices. Also don't forget Google has become VZW's b*tch lately too so don't expect Google to stand up for you.

Amen to this.
Although I'm half-way flattered about your comments about my work, this is posted in the wrong forum.
The X2 will never get official ICS and my CM9 port is the only ICS ROM that will probably ever be released for it. Maybe AOKP if I were to ever get the chance, but who in the hell ever knows.
TLDR: Wrong forums, no ice cream fo you! (yet)

[Welcome] Incredible -> Droid X2 Transition

Hi. I'm not sure if this is appropriate, but what the heck. I've owned an HTC Incredible for almost 24 months and this past Saturday I dropped it glass first onto the concrete. Needless to say, I have an x2 UPS should be dropping off at my house today. I'm looking forward to the larger screen and dual core CPU.
After browsing the developer forums, I am disappointed how little ROM selection there is. I read this is because Motorola locks down their system. I had the choice of an Incredible 2 or this. I chose this, so I hope I won't be disappointed.
About me: I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, so I hope to help test out ROMs as much as possible after I root. Which shouldn't take too long to talk myself into it . I'm more of a lurker than a poster. That's all for now.

Welcome. Since you are coming from an HTC phone, you may get a little frustrated with how much you cant do on a Motorola phone. BUT, we do have awesome developers who make awesome ROMs for our phones. I suggest Eclipse or CM7. And I would forget how you used a rooted HTC and learn from scratch with your DX2. For instance, if you have used ROM manager or anything similar, don't use it with your DX2. A lot of people mess up there phones with that. We dont use ClockworkMod Recovery, but an alternative called Bootstrap Recovery. Since our phones are locked down, we have to be tethered to a wall charger to use this. No flashing on the go for us. And ICS is a ways away from getting onto our phones. Just a few things we have to deal with. Its still a nice phone.

Though stuff is bleak now and people like me recently moved to other phones like the nexus or dinc2 or resound, still dragonzkiller is working on CM9 and that should immensely help this device. Right now 2 of the best ROMs are CM7 and eclipse, which is a huge complement to eclipse as it is based on blur....
Oh crap, btw pray to god that your phone does NOT have 2.3.5 OTA on it. If so, you cannot root it. Yet.

With it being more difficult to flash, maybe I'll have a more operable phone lol. On a more serious note, after reading that HTC is releasing ICS for the Incredible 2 I am somewhat disappointed for not choosing it. I'm happy to try a Motorola phone again thought and will enjoy the 0.3" larger screen, my main reason for talking insurance into giving me this phone. Anyways, thanks for the information, it will come in handy on down the road.
Sad to hear there's only 2 main ROMs people use. I'm crossing my fingers for having 2.3.4 .
It probably will have 235 http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x2-hacks/205470-bummer-full-2-3-5-1-3-418-root-broken.html

Welcome to the X2 commnuity
To be brutally honest, I believe the incredible 2 has a much higher satisfaction rate compared to the X2. *cough cough* that's why I was going to get the Inc2 until I saw Rezound at a reasonable price
But as said, there are some developers that make X2 quaint =)
I SWEAR TO GOD if the ota breaks root I'm leaving this crap phone.... omg I'm effn pissed!!! Hopefully there was a mistake somewhere... read the link above guys.. and be ready to scream at someone.

I thought someone in this thread said it but I guess not. I read someone saying Eclipse is modified to block OTA updates. Thats a relief on my part since thats what I'm using.

As far as I know/remember, all ROMs block OTAs. CM7 does too...

The Incredible 2 didn't even pop in my mind to be honest.
My phone has 2.3.4, let the fun begin . The phone seems pretty quick so far, except when unlocking. Does the snappiness end over time like I've heard?
I've had both, dinc2 is far better.
no offense to dx2 devs though. Dzk, nitro and company are the best.

Yes. Yes, it does end. Anyway, the good news is you are on 2.3.4 and thereby been spared by the tyranny of Moto, but by just. Your best bet is CM7/Eclipse and soon CM9... Just don't ask for ETAs, else you'll suffer the wrath of the Dragon!
And don't dare update to 2.3.5. In fact, just root that damn thing and install CM7/Eclipse to avoid being nagged by the phone to update, when the damned update does arrive.. Enjoy (I can't say that with a straight face, sigh) your device as much as possible. And I hope I and others didn't rain on your parade too much. Have fun with the X2...

If you have bloat freezer or titanium back up you can stop the ota update.

If by rain on my parade you mean make me regret getting this phone... . I do enjoy the slightly larger screen and resolution so that's trade off enough for me. But if it does end up like the post you linked, dinc2 here I come.
After not even having the phone activated for 24 hours I'm having trouble. It's the infamous sdcard music playback skipping I've read about . This happens intermittently, sometimes few skips sometimes many. Called Asurion, they told me to take the battery out and hold power down for 15 seconds. We'll see how it does at work tomorrow.
Edit: This happens with the phone idol running PowerAMP with music from 128 KBPS all the way to 2580KBPS. It gets worse downloading updates on 3G.
Youll never completely get rid of that, and its not the sdcard it dies it on internal as well, im looking into new samsung phones, done with motorola soon as I find what i want. Without nitro, dkz, and the rest of our gang i would have been gone months ago. But cm7 and eclipse are both amazing compared to what this was out of the box
from my X2 roaming the north
If you go into power amp setings and find the buffering option and select the largest one it may help the skipping. I came from the original droidx and i was expecting a better phone but turned out to be worse. I am just glad that we have any devs working on this phone! they have done alot for it.
