Need Help: Rooting 1.40 - 1/2 way complete :NOW COMPLETE: - HTC EVO 3D

I was helping a buddy root his Evo 3D today. We managed to get S-off, but couldn't get Clockwork mod to install. Later I realized that his PC was not recognizing his 3vo. Installed the HTC drivers, still same problem. Installed HTC Sync, still the same. Now I can't do anything to his phone.
To make matters worse, he can't surf online. The phone boots up just fine, and the boot loader is unlocked, but this is where we currently stand.

Try to flash TWRP:
[RECOVERY] [EVO3D] TeamWin Recovery Project
Just dl the .zip file, rename it to PG86IMG.zip, put it on the root of the SD card. Then boot into bootloader (either through adb or take battery out, put back in and hold power + vol down). Then once it loads into bootloader (not fastboot) it will auto detect the .zip and ask you to update. Press vol up to say yes, wait for it to finish.
Now you'll have a working recovery, you can flash other already rooted ROMs using the flash zip utility in the recovery or if you just want to root the default ROM you have to flash this zip file with the 'flash zip' under recovery.

Is there supposed to be a root folder, or do I just simply place the main directory.
We placed the .zip file, after it was renamed into the main directory of the 3vo. Booted into HBOOT, but nothing happened. We were not prompted, just sat there in the HBOOT screen.

The root of anything is the main directory.

Many thanks, well if that is the case then nothing is happening. No prompt, just loads into HBOOT and our only option after that is to reboot manually.

Try again? Here is a link already renamed. Just put on root of SD card as before: http://db.tt/2ARi4m4

Weird, for some reason, going directly through the link that you provided worked. So now we have twrp on the phone. The 3vo recognized it, updated, but now still no phone or internet use.
Do I use twrp as a recovery? If so how? Should there be a twrp app now? Or do I just go back through HBOOT and select recovery from there?

This might not help but try wiping the Dalvik Cache first. If that doesnt help, do a full wipe (factory reset/data wipe), install the ROM again and try that.
Theres no app that will show so go through HBOOT, select recovery (it will look like it is rebooting but it isn't - it is loading the recovery), then choose the backup/restore option.
Alternatively if the ROM you are using has 4 way reboot you can use that to boot directly into recovery.
EDIT: yes twrp is recovery.

There's a Su.zip Signed and Another version that's Unsigned!
Put Both versions on your SDCard and try Flashing one at a tine, see which one works?
Good Luck!

:NOW COMPLETE:
I would like to thank everyone that helped.
Switched PCs. Installed HTC drivers on 2nd PC, worked. Then went through the same root process. All done. I only with that veterans would also inform new root users that 'Error 16' will happen once the phone is rooted. All I had to do was call the provider and all was squared away.

Got one for you now. I was able to get my buddy's phone back. Seems that he can't remember his gmail PW. He swears that the PW he is giving me is correct, but he can't get in, not even through a PC. This blows, as he cannot use the market without a valid GM account. Not even getting a new GM account solves the problem. So I did some research and it seems that the original GM account associated wtih the phone cannot associate anymore, and trying to get a new GM account will not solve the issue. So if PW is incorrect, I'm assuming that the only thing that can be done is to reset the phone back to factory. My question is, doing so will cause me to update the phone to the newest version 1.50+. In doing so, no more root.
Are there any other options?

Going into setings and doing a factor reset doesn't update your phone to the 1.50 hboot and you don't lose root. Just flash a ROM that's updated to the latest ota I'm on clean ROM it runs perfect smooth as butter and don't forget to nandroid

Recovery Issues

I installed CM7 Alpha last night. I then tried to install Gapps and it got stuck at the white "HTC" bootup screen. I pulled the battery and then tried to install a backup and go back to my old rom, but same thing happened. Kept getting stuck at that same white screen.
So then I try to install TWRP. Even after renaming(PG86IMG) and installing it into the root of the SD card directory, Fastboot doesn't detect it.
It keeps saying "no image or wrong image". Any ideas? I've been trying to figure out ADB as a last resort but it's a bit over my head with that.

Are you S-OFF or just HTC unlocked? Also, how did you root? Also, I know this one is crazy, but did you have .zip at the end of PG86IMG?

I'm S-OFF still. I used revolutionary the first day it came out. I didn't have ".zip" at the end of the PG86IMG either, cause i knew it may be redundant on windows.
I've flashed a ton of sense roms with no issues, so it's kind of worrying me now that I can't figure out how to fix this.
I suspect rom manager has something to do with it. I had CWM as my recovery. While i'm in rom manager, the device list doesn't show Evo 3D as an option, and because rom manager is a system app on cm7, I can't install an updated apk that I downloaded.
So your goal is to install twrp correct? You can just fastboot flash the .img fyi. Also, the PG zip you are flashing, can you check the file extension from your file explorer just to make sure. One more thing, did you zip the TWRP img yourself or download it from the thread?

Well my goal is to get any recovery installed...cause right now I'm stuck. I'd love to be able to install one of my nandroid backups, but it's not working at all. I've tried to fastboot install the img, but the same thing keeps popping up. It basically says to an effect that "no image or wrong image found" The zip i used was direct from the xda thread.
I think I may know how I messed up. I was looking again in rom manager yesterday and since it appears to be an older version, I clicked on Evo 4g as my device type(didn't pay attention..just saw Evo). Today I realized it since Evo 3D isn't even on the list. Could this be screwing up my phone?
Yes, ROM manager, if used incorrectly, can hose you, like any root app. What I said earlier about fastboot, I'll try again. You can use fastboot not hboot to "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" i'm almost positive that the code, i'm real tired though. Ilk check back tomorrow when my brain works. Unless someone else answers.

Thanks for the help. I got everything working again. I found a titanium backup apk and then reinstalled the saved rom manager from my sd card. I was then able to get into recovery and finally restore.

phone wont boot anymore, help needed

When i was trying to boot into recovery mode it failed and it gave a superuser error. At this moment i had leedroid rom evo 3d gsm that is s-off. When i still had stock rom i never had this error but it seems like it was there all the time with the leedroid rom. Well so i was trying to boot into recovery. Tried it with power button and volume down button at same time, but this was failing. So i did it with rom manager. I used rom manager before when i installed leedroids rom. But now it didnt boot into recovery. I tried installing superuser again but it didnt seem to make any difference. with rootchecker i checked if i had root acces but it seemed i lost root acces :S. after retrying a couple of times my phone didnt boot back to the leedroid rom. I was trying a lot of things, with and without sd and sim. After about 20 reboots i tried power and volume down to go to bootloader and know it loaded. At bootloader start it loads some things and i saw no image blalbla dont really know what it meant. I tried to go to recovery but it wont boot, i get a white screen with htc and wont load anything. I tried all other options in bootloader too, to check if anything works but even a factory reset failed.
For me it looked like somehow my rom is f*cked and now i cant go to recovery mode somehow. I have rom on my sd so if i could go to recovery i could still flash. Does anyone know how i still might get to recovery mode or is there another way to still flash another rom. Maybe there are some people who can tell me more about leedroids rom, are there more people who got trouble with root acces?
anyone who might be able to help plz let me know, im so frustrated right now because i cant use my phone, i even need to think about a way to wake me up this morning because i always used my phone for alarm
That is a very easy to fix problem. First, download Clockworkmod recovery for your device (evo 3D GSM) or another recovery.
CWM 5.2.0 Shooteru: http://www.mediafire.com/?5kdr0c7xux2c64p
After download/finding the recovery, rename it to PG86DIAG. (or whatever it tries to scan for in bootloader. If its 2 things, it is the bottom one)
Place the file on your SD card somehow. (in your case you would need to take out the SD card and put it in another phone/adapter)
Boot into bootloader with volume down + power and it should scan for the file. When it asks if you want to do the update, press yes. After the recovery is installed, press power to reboot.
Do a battery pull while you are on the splash screen. Reboot back into bootloader with vol down + power and click on recovery. Wipe everything and flash the rom again. Reboot and you should be able to load the ROM with root and everything.
thx, im so happy to here your solution. Know lets search for my sd adapter, i know its somewhere . I will let you know later if it has worked

Oke i did what you said but when i boot into bootloader nothing has changed. It doesnt ask if i want to update anything. And if i go to recovery and try to boot it keeps hanging at the white screen with htc
btw, you said this:after download/finding the recovery, rename it to PG86DIAG. (or whatever it tries to scan for in bootloader.
Do you mean it might be other name i have to make it? How do i know this?

It is probably a different name.
When you boot into bootloader, it scans for 2 files and says not found, right?
The second file it scans for is the one you want to rename it to.
hmke, ye it scans for files but its going fast so cant see it very well. I see about 5 things get scanned
oke first thing it scanned is called PG86DIAG.zip, 2nd is PG86DIAG.nbh, 3th is PG86IMG.zip, 4th is PG86IMG.nbh, 5th is PG86IMG.tar, 6th is PG86IMG.aes, 7th is PG86IMG.enc
All this things are scanned and then it says no image
From what I can read if you lost root then you are s-on on the bootloader right? if so installing recovery through bootloader wont work... check if you have S-on or S-off on bootloader if you have s-on you will need to use a official update to restore your phone...

Do PG86IMG. Also, if it says S-On at the top of the bootloader, you will need to get S-Off with revolutionary again.

No im still s-off, but when my phone was less ****ed as it is now and i could still boot normaly, i already had some strange things with leedroid rom. superuser never seems to be working well. i couldnt give root acces, it gave an error when i try. even through root chekker it says no root, but i thought that might have something to do with superuser.

do you mean name the file PG86IMG and not PG86DIAG?
lol your answer came faster
Oke still no difference, but it is chekking for a .zip file right? Im not sure if its .zip right now, is this the reason why its failing?
Ummmmm I dont see any other choice but this... you can follow this tutorial to get your phone working...
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262457
You are going to need to revert back to stock
I had the same problem a month back and was able to fix it.
Also don't worry if you can still get to the boot loader its fixable.

So it acts as if there is no .zip at all? Like it says "No image found"?
Double check if its a zip and the file is named properly. If it doesn't recognize it, there is a problem with your SD card/bootloader.
Oke when i put the .zip in a clockworkmod folder it didnt see it but now it shows parsing behind the PG86DIAG.zip and the PG86DIAG.img says no image or wrong image. All other thing still say no image
I tried the .zip you uploaded and now it could load the image , trying to flash now

I see what you're doing wrong. Don't put the zip in a clockworckmod folder. Put it on the root of your sd card.
(just directly on the sd card)

Good catch on that one.
If you don't put it directly on the root of your sd card then the boot loader will not be able to find the zip and flash it.
Oke thx, i finally booted into recovery . I first had to delete the .zip again because it was trying to update again when i didnt. Im so happy now , couldnt done this without your help so i will push the thx button few times^^

[Guide]Simple Guide for Installing Recovery *ICS OTA Update Compatible*

edit: Removed CWM Recovery since it only causes problems
This isn't a thread that is going to help you unlock your bootloader. This is what to do next, once you are unlocked. Downloads mentioned in this thread are attached. I really haven't seen a consolidated place to find this info. Hopefully this fixes that. I and nobody else are responsible for any bricks that might occur. (They shouldn't, as we aren't flashing anything "critical" to the system that can't be recovered)
How to install custom recovery.
There are 2 methods that currently work to install recovery. I will only discuss one because it is the easier one for noobs. If you know how to install it via fastboot, go ahead. You probably are above this thread knowledge wise.
Recovery Installation Method: The PH98IMG.zip
This method uses a file called PH98IMG.zip to install the custom recovery. This is the simplest and doesn't require knowledge of fastboot, adb, and doesn't need a computer.
1) Download the PH98IMGICSNEWOTA.zip of the recovery. Rename it to PH98IMG.zip
2) Connect your phone to your PC (if you downloaded the PH98IMG.zip directly from your phone's browser, use a file manager to duplicate these steps)
3) Enable USB Mass Storage (as if you wanted to copy a file to the memory card).
4) Copy the PH98IMG.zip to the root (not in any folders) of the external SD card. NOT the HTC Storage. This is extremely important. It should not be in ANY folders.
5) Disconnect the phone from the computer and shut the phone down.
6) Pull your phone's battery. It should not have the USB cable in it either.
7) Put the battery back in. Press and hold the volume down button and then press the power button. You should get taken to a white screen. This is HBOOT.
8) Some green text should scroll on the screen. At the bottom, it will prompt you if you would like to install the update. Press the button associated with YES. It is most likely volume up, but I cannot remember off the top of my head for sure.
9)When it finishes, it will ask you to press power to reboot. Do this. If you have no signal after booting, it is most likely because you forgot to put the battery door back on, as the antennas are in the door.
10) Delete the PH98IMG.zip from your memory card, or else you will not be able to get into recovery.
11) Custom recovery is installed.
How to access custom recovery.
1) Power down your phone and pull the battery. It should not be connected to a computer.
2) Press and hold volume down and power to get to HBOOT.
3) Use the volume buttons to scroll to recovery, then press the power button.
4) The HTC screen will flash briefly and you will be taken to recovery. You navigate with the power button and the volume buttons.
I highly recommend running a nandroid backup after this. This can be done in either recovery via the backup and restore sections. Google this if you don't know how. I figure most of you have used custom recovery before, so I won't go into it here.
Old Rooting Method(No longer works with ICS):
How to root (Permanently).
This rooting method again doesn't explicitly require a PC and is permanent until you actively remove it.
1) Flash AmonRa Recovery.
2) Boot into AmonRa Recovery.
3) Scroll to and enter the Developer menu.
4) Scroll to install Su. DO NOT INSTALL THE ENG (Unguarded) one. Use the other one.
5) Confirm this, when it is finished, go ahead and reboot. You should be rooted.

There are a couple things to consider here. First, you currently have your choice of 2 recoveries: ClockworkMod (CWM) or AmonRa. These two recoveries are very similar in function. I prefer CWM, but that is just me. We will use AmonRa in the rooting section of this post but you can ignore that for now.The installation for either of these is the same and there are 2 methods that currently work for both of them. boot.img should work too. I think the zips don't work due to a difference in the android-info.txt. If bal1985 can install CWM then that is the issue. People have been able to install ziggy's kernel via the boot image I packed with a PH zip

Urgently need help. Would appreciate it very much.

Dear all,
Here is the situation. I decided to root my evo 3d gsm (hboot 1.5++) today, and all went well until I flashed a rom (virtuous). Now whenever I boot on the phone, it shows me this "V" logo and loads for more than 10minutes or so. I can go into my bootloader, but when I attempt to do anything from my clockworkmod recovery, when I press the power button to select different options, I get blank menus and I can attempt nothing. I am an unexperienced user, and can anyone out there who is experience render some assistance? I am at my wits end...
Thanks
Well I'm not too familier with the gsm version... the "V", is that part of the boot animation? and does it just loop over and over? maybe try reflashing clockworkmod and re wipe and install?

The "V" is the part of the boot animation. And the "V" just glows again and again, yeah so i guess it loops. Why I am so worried is because I saw a window of my HTC sense booting to life earlier on, but I saw the words "Unfortunately... has... crashed..." but it was very brief, and after which the animation began again. Is it because I waited for too short a period of time? (around 15 minutes or so) or because it really boot looped? And how do I reflash clockwordmod when I can't access my phone and sd card? Will appreciate your kind help...
I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for something too boot, and it should really never take longer than that. Can you tell me the steps you took to flash the rom(not to root it). and could you give some more info about your phone? are you s-on or s-off? And what do you mean by blank menus in clockwork mod? Do you know how to boot into your hboot menu? from there you can boot to fastboot and install the recovery from your pc. connect your phone to the pc while in fastboot mode and get your recovery.img file and type the following command from the command line:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img

Ok, here is the infomation. I live in Singapore, which is a part of Southeast Asia, my phone is the GSM version with HBoot 1.530007(i cant remember the decimal placing).
I firstly used HTCDEV to unlock my bootloader, which went well, then I went to evohacks to get the conventional rooting method, which went well too. And it all came when I was careless, and I accidentally forgot to wipe the data and cache of my evo before i flashed the rom. And now it gets stuck in the "V" logo loading phase. If the hboot menu is the menu where I have to press the powerbutton and the volume down button then yes. I can also get into my recovery, but the problem is that it shows a blank menu in (clockwordmod specifically), thus rendering whatever me helpless. i have downloaded the PG86IMG.zip and Im waiting for it to finish. So how do I go about solving this matter? This phone is my only asset and I really want to save it...
Blank menu as in for example when I click "Reboot", or "Factory Reset" or perhaps "Restore" in the CWD Recovery, it just shows me a blank menu with the CWD logo in the background, with no options or drop down words or whatsoever. And the sad thing is that I did not make any recoveries at all.... So I plucked my sd card out, and now im waiting to finish downloading the PG86IMG.zip to put on my sd and into my phone, and flash it to revert it back to stock and stuff..... I hope this works
Ok, well as long as you can get to either hboot or recovery you'll be ok. I would recommend flashing 4ext recovery, as it has never failed me and seems to help others. here is the link to it. Download that and pull the recovery.img out and flash that from your pc with the command I gave above. It sounds like you are either pushing the wrong button in the recovery or it might just be messing up for some reason. Is it the touchscreen version of clockworkmod?

The recovery is the free version, so it shouldn't be the touch one. May I ask, what do you mean by recovery.img? I emptied my SD card so that I can put the PG86IMG.zip into it later. Any more specific steps you can give? Sorry but Im really a newb in the android world

The recovery.img is the image that the phone flashes to install the recovery. If you look in the zip I posted in the link you'll see that file in there. the one I posted is the 4ext touch recovery. you can manually flash that file to your phone in case you can't get it to boot(like your case). I would suggest trying the 4ext recovery I linked, or maybe try to boot to recovery again and see if its touch based. Were the menus working when you flashed the virtuous rom, and then it stopped working?
OH stupid me. Whoops. Actually I CAN navigate. Ive been pressing the wrong button all this while. I pressed the power instead of the camera, which is the select button. Whoops. seems like CMD was working after all. sorry...
ok but still, can I just attempt to install the RUU file I downloaded in the CWD menu? Will it work? Will my phone be reverted back to its original unrooted state? I saw someone say it could...
There is something bugging me though. My SD card is now completely empty. Will it have any negative effects on what i do?
I thought something like that was happening, glad you got it sorted. Try to wipe everything and reinstall your virtious rom again first. yes the PG86IMG.zip will return you back to complete stock, recovery and all. So if you do that you might have to re-root all over again.

no it won't.
thank you so much! So since now everything is clean, you recommend another shot at the virtous? I just drag it and put it in my sd card right? Neat! Will go try, if i encounter another problem will come back here. Thanks a lot! It really means a lot to me!

I would recommend trying it before you go back to stock just to re-do it all, but its up to you. yeah if you need more help just come here or pm me. glad you got it working again!
Thank You!
Oh ok! I thought by clearing the data using recovery on the phone and sd will render the root useless. Will try redoing it again. Will update you on the further details
Many thanks!

If you only wipe /data/ you will still have root. sdcard doesn't matter.

So theoretically flashing the ROM shouldn't take more than... around 15 minutes?
correct
Its now 10 minutes and so far my phone had made 2 major vibrations. So if this doesn't work, can i just wipe all the data again, put the PG86IMG.zip in my phone, go to recovery to install it, and then I just press reboot right?

Sometimes sense roms can take a bit, but if its vibrating than it should be working. if not just put the PG86IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard and boot into hboot and let it do its thing. no need to wipe data for that.

Wiped System?No OS on twrp2.2

hello
First time, Long time. Just managed to install twrp2.2 and it is a nice ui for any sytem. But my issue is rough.
I was going to install a new rom with a Merto pcs service flashed over from Sprint. Unlocked S-om with rom manager on it
when I received it back. Read alot and many peple claim it is ok to stay with 1.50 so-on, others say to go back to 1.40.
I managed to root the device per maxs evo hacks and until I installed and accidently wiped kel/cashe, System by accident,
Anyways I even tried removing the 8 gig sd card and used a fully backed up same card to try and get recovery img file to boot into.
No luck because it goes into a screen that says (Parsing...[SD ZIP under that it says [1] RECOVERY . Then , Do you want to update
up=yes , down = No. Tried yes and continues bootloop.
Then I tried putting back the other sd card and that allows me to go onto the twrp ui but no ofixes that I know of or can do.
Can anyone help me, I will look out for you, really.
Thanks in advance. D-ACman Florida.
If I read correctly, you need to take out your SD card and put into a PC to remove the pg86100.zip img off of it. Put it back then go back to the bootloader and go to recovery. After that, flash a rom.

Ok I can try that but believe me I tried to do just that when thigs went crazy. So I though I should reinstall stock ruu after accidentally
wipeing my system along with cashe/kalvik/ and complete wipe, I somehow wiped the bootdrive of what it is telling me is the is no OS
installed si I'm at a loss and I k now if I can get into trwp recovery I can get a Rom either stock or other to be read and installed.
Each time I get bootloops and what I'm thinking is I should have take fastboot off when try to install an ICS rom, but that is still not the issue
I just believe I wiped eveything because of the statement on twrp ui that there is no OS installed.
I really appreciate whatever feedback and instructions you can give me. Just tell me what to try or do and I will
Thanks very much.
Download twrp recovery.img file. Put into your adb platform tools folder.
With phone off hold volume down & power.
Once in the bootloader, select fastboot.
Open a command from your platform tools folder. Then type..
fastboot boot recovery.img
Then just flash another ROM. If your sdcard is wiped , just toggle USB mass storage in recovery & transfer from computer.
Hope that helps

Ok woke up early today and I had seen this type of fix on another page on Q&A. SO first I had to get the file but you cant just
open prompt and type a command but I k now I had to go to the tools folder after inserting the .img file. Ok did that.
Since I have always kept my SDk in the root of my C:dr it's easier to hold shift down and right click on the tools folder then I placed the commands and brother, for lack of a better word or terminology,--- Absolutlely nothing happens.
Now am I using the right syntax commands? maybe not but the way you gave me the advice I thought it might get the img file onto the internal
drive of the phone.
Man I tried to even put the trwpzip file onto the sdcard and install it, unfortunetly that did'nt work either. So when I use the file manager
in TWRP2.2 I can see the files in the root of the phone and when I go and tap on the inner usb dr I have no files that I can see. What I might
have to do is to take snapshots of the actual menus I am seeing and perhaps I can get help that way.
I know it is difficult when you can't see exactly what is on my phone screen.
What about the DUMLOCK method within the ui of twrp. I have to digest some info on that section for I have'nt a clue about what the
dumlock does but if it's in the twrp UI it must be of some importance.
I really appreciate what you guys are doing for me and wether I get it fixed with or without your methods I will definately give U points for
taking time out to read my issues. I have not mentioned that I also have a duplicate phone (My 1st EVO) and that one came with 1.40 H-Boot
as opposed to this one with 1.50. nevertheless it is a good feeling, I know, when you can get ur **** running and installing Roms like if it was
a candy store. Im an old school type guy, as far as age is concerned and I am a Self employed Sub HVAC/R TECH and I Love to play with
ANdroid and all that goes with Flashing. I just wish I would have went to school for Computer Programming instead of AC.
But it is what it is. Sorry for the long life history and thanks again, If U can figure something else out please reply. Thanks
D-ACman
Still on Bootloop

Ok here I'll try again.
Phone is Evo3d Flashed to Metro PCS
phone is unlocked and S-ON
TWRP 2.2 recovery
when noticed I was low on space on my micro sd card I then replaced it witha pny 32 gig class 4 sd card
It comes already formatted 32 fat but I did another clean format on the computer
I replaced or copied everything onto the new card then installed it the working evo 3-d
I was on mikV for a few days but once I got into leedroid tweeks I then decided to just flash my nandroid recovery and go
back to stock.
At that time I was on CWM 4040 or something to that affect.
I noticed the beautiful UI for the TWRP 2.2 and decided to use that recovery.
As soon as I decided to use another custom rom the **** hit the fan.
So now I'm back where I started and I am reading many posts where I think I need to go and relock the phone
then install the stock rom and hopefully that will work.
What I need is to get step by step on the command prompts and computer to recognize the phone
when I try to place the image thats necessary to do the "fastboot lock commands and that it is seen working.
That's where I'm stuck at and am going from this dell laptop computer to my desktop and start the ADK/SDK download
put it in the C: drive and hopefully In the cprompt it will communicate to the phone.
I there a nooby guide to the step by step command procedure to do this?
