[DISCUSSION] Cracks by the Speakers? - TouchPad General

I have noticed a crack by each speaker (the one near the top is much deeper) on the thin plastic of my TouchPad. I know it's a common problem and was just wondering if anyone else is pissed about this? I feel like it's a waste of my time to even baby this device anymore now that it's not pristine.
EDIT: Added image for proof and links to other sites about the same issue.

I have the same problem. Noticed mine was cracked 2 days ago. REALLY pissed me off because I take extra care with this ever since i got it. Put a drop of superglue in there and pressed it back down. Isnt perfect, but shouldn't crack again.

same here unfortunately.
did the superglue trick as i don't want a refurb.
i plan to beat the hell out of this thing anyway lol.

I'm fixing to get some epoxy and fill in the scratches today. I asked my friend who got his the same day I did and he said he has no scratches. Oh, and I also have the infamous crack by my headphone jack. I've never even plugged anything into the jack.

I have a crack closest to my headphone jack. I didn't notice it until I seen your post here.
I notice that the glass is raised just slightly as well. I'm kinda mad but then I remember what I spent on it.
Posting from it now as a matter of fact.

I got a crack also. the bottom left speaker. not to happy. i wonder how much a back cover costs and where we and buy one?

Pics please?

How long have you guys had your TPs? Mine is only 2 weeks old and so far, there are no cracks around the speakers or the earphone jack.
This is the same problem the Nook had when it was first released, cracks around the page turn buttons. My later production nook (version 1 e-ink) never showed any cracks.
I assume most of us wil have to expect this to happen on our TPs, unless it was a mold issue with a few earlier units.

I know exactly when it happened too. it was in my bookbag in a special pocket on the back made for small laptops or tablets. very padded. my bookbag fell off my couch, maybe two feet, flat on it's back. I take out my TP and it's cracked. not cool.

I've had mine for a little over a week. It went into an official HP case right out of the box. I've been very careful with it. Never dropped it or anything like that. Yesterday I noticed there was a crack by the left speaker. It sucks to have such a thing happen when you're really careful. Used some super glue in it. Will beat the hell out of it now.

I posted about this on SD and made a poll for it almost two weeks ago.

I was proposing the possibility that all of these are defective and this is the reason why HP liquidated them.

You can't be serious.
Why would HP take a $200 loss for an issue that people may or may not notice.
Guess what.
Mine is cracked too. I didn't notice it until I saw this thread and went looking. Never would have seen it otherwise.

Mine is crack free, literally and figuratively

Anyone found a way to prevent it? Not got the crack just yet, I guess they didn't reinforce the plastic casing around the parts mentioned from the inside.... Pretty poor.

My tablet has taken a couple drops and I dont have any scratchs, dings, or cracks! I wonder what is causing the problem for some people. I have been rather impressed with the build quality of my TouchPad, Id say it almost comprable to my iPad.

I have a hairline crack I never noticed until I checked. It looked like a spec of dust but was indeed a crack on the speaker headed away from the screen.

Here is a pic of the one by my top/left speaker. It has actually spread since I first began this thread. It's bigger than it used to be and I still have never dropped it or mistreated it in anyway.

My glass is raised on the speaker side as well. I can see it move when I press on the bezel. Hopefully the screen doesn't pop out on me.

Well, this is definitely a huge issue. A hairline crack just formed on my 64GB white touchpad within the last day right by one of the speakers. I never bumped, dropped, etc my touchpad. I am guessing this is going to occur to 100% of the touchpads out there eventually. I had mine for over a week before this crack appeared. Give yours time and keep an eye on it. You should have them soon enough.

Worst Digitizer EVER!!

Man, my friggin digitizer crack one day, literally like a sheet of thin ice even with a case on. Now, the new one has a tiny scratch and I haven't done anything to it. I have never had such a fragile digitizer on any phone before. Only thing that really bothers me coming from HTC MyTouch 4g where I was in a bar fight and my phone was dragged across the floor and only had scratches, never cracked when it should have been destroyed, lol. Anybody else thing the digitizer is crappy?
Don't get me wrong either, I am careful with my phone, i just can't believe how badly it shattered on a short drop. Annoying as hell!!
I've dropped my phone with and without my commuter case at least a dozen times on a construction site without even a scratch.

Funny you say that. All touchscreen phones are like this. Thin glass. And being that motorola generally makes quality hardware and the plastic on the atrix absorbing impact better than metal phones, methinks you need to take better care of your phone. I see a lot phones during the work week and it seems ive seen a lot of cracked iphones lately. Im not fond of apple but i concede that their phones are high quality. Cant fault a phone or its manufacturer for dropping your phone. You sound silly when you make the mistake but shift the blame.
I voided my warranty.
My first Atrix was tossed out of the car at onto asphalt. I didn't have a case or screen protector on it and after picking up the cover and the battery, everything was fine. A couple scratches and bumps in the plastic but everything worked fine.
The screen finally broke on a fast ball pitch straight down to the floor.

Anyone dropped theirs or close calls yet?

I have been showing mine off at the office and all the time someone is holding it, especially one handed, I just cringe. My two year old likes to hold it herself while she plays the games I downloaded for her so we are always sitting and I have a pillow on her lap to rest it on. Man! I can't wait for decent cases to become available for this thing.
I hold this thing like a baby when someone else holda it I stand there and watch them carefully I'm not letting this thing hit the ground
I'm looking to get a good case asap also. I had 2 close calls. one time it almost slipped holding it one handed. althoughi love the look of the aluminum back, it is very slippery. I usually try to always hold it with 2 hands. this thing is light as a feather compared to my ipad1 but being slippery makes me Leery of one hand use till I get a case.
had another major scare when my 16 month old daughter took the thick, heavy Comcast cable remote and banged it pretty hard against the screen. you know how lil kids like to bang things in their hand up n down. I was like WoooooooA! so glad this thing has gorilla glass. no scratches or anything from that. I think because its so thin and flat, its pretty much baby proof if they bang on screen with their hands/palms. my Ipad held up to alot of abuse also and I kept it mostly in the official apple case. I have the targus truss case also that I mostly use when traveling. it provides maximum protection but adds alot of bulk/ thickness. my Ipad survived daughter constantly banging on it, drops flat on the screen on hard surface, and drops on the corner of it on hard surface. it survived it all with no screen cracks or scratches on screen. I'm pretty confident the prime can even hold up to more abuse. I don't even think ipad1 had gorilla glass. I am looking for a good case though. I saw a nice one in accessories section of a leather one at amazon. its on sale for like only $11. there's a thread or link to it in that section of prime forum. I forgot the name of it case. looks good.

My screens already lose so I need a replacement I'm scared if I drop it screen might become worse
I haven't dropped mine yet, but I took mine to work one day. My boss was talking about how she wants to buy the Ipad 3. I showed her mine and she asked to see it so I gave it to her. After looking at it, she sat it on the desk and the spun it so she could at it in landscape mode. I cringed when she did it but figured it would be fine because of the aluminum backing.
Come to find out yesterday when I looked at the back, there are about 4 small scuffs, two on each side of the logo, which I deducted probably came from my boss turning it around on the desk :'(. I guess the back isn't as tough as I thought. Luckily, I had already called game top 2 days after I bought it asking for an exchange because of screen issues. I just hope the replacement has the same build quality and screen as this one. Compared to my original transformer, the whites looked much more true on the Prime.
Dropped mine, but only from a 2 feet or so, but I tried to soften the blow with my toe. It cut it instead, haha, IT TASTED BLOOD. Anyway, careful, edges are quite sharp when falling ^_^
I did today, and look what happened

Front Panel Glass Lifting

Hi,
Is anyone elses Prime have problems with creeky, lifting glass either to the right of the charger slot or the area with the volume adjuster? I don't want to send it to Asus to have it "Repaired" just for having creeky glass but I'm tempted (I can't send it back to Gamestop as I live in the UK). Do you think blasting it with a heat gun/Hair Dryer and pushing down on it will fix it?
Thanks, and nice forum .
ya I also have it next to the volume thing and near my camera I don't know if I should return it or send it to get repaired.
Not so far... Mine has no problems at all.
Was it this way when you received it?
Just noticed this yesterday to the right of the Volume control on mine. This is my second Prime as the first one had a faulty MicroSD slot but no other defects. I wonder if I can take it back to Gamestop (again) or will I have to deal with ASUS directly.

It wasn't anywhere near as bad, at least not to the right of the charger slot. It is about a 2" by 1.5" rectangle that goes down by about 1 or 2mm when pushed down on it. I said if it gets any worse I'll send it to ASUS but I don't want to spend up to weeks without it because of this.
Do you reckon attempting to heat the adhesive with a hair dryer could cause damage to the screen/glass?
I have it too!
Just wanted to let you know that I also have the same issue. I noticed it first by the 2 inch section of bezel to the right of the dock arrow, and just noticed it by the volume keys after you pointed it out to me. I have pondered exchanging it with Best Buys, but I wondered if this was unreasonable. Any fixes or suggestions anybody? Thanks!

I noticed it to the right of my charger port a week or so ago.
Makes a light creak noise when pushing on it. Not an area I really touch, but annoying all the same. Living in Australia, not going to RMA (yet at least), and can't send it back to B&H anyway.
Havn't noticed it get any worse.
How long would an RMA from Asus take? I would prefer to do an in-store exchange, but none of the Best Buys around me have Primes in stock. Also, what store is B&H? It doesn't sound familiar.
I thought it was only me having the problem to the right of the charger port. In this case it's probably a widespread issue that's due to there being no support underneath the glass.
I've go this problem too. Mine is right above the speaker and, to a lesser extent, above the volume rocker. The one above the speaker seems to be getting worse, probably because I can't stop myself from repeatedly pressing on the f***ing thing...
I also have some light bleed at the top of my screen, so what I'm going to do is wait until near the last day of Best Buy's extended Holiday return period (1/24) then go swap it out in-store. Hopefully by then they will have stock so I won't have to be tablet-less for any length of time.
Mine has light bleed down the right side of the screen, and the ride side of the tablet appears to be slightly raised. I can literally push the glass flush against the underbody. So yes, I have the same problem.
It is weird, it just feels a bit loose on the right hand side.
One thing I did notice is that it appears the Touch Glass is attached to the Back Panel with a rubbery adhesive or a rubber "filter" type thing. It almost reminds me of a gasket or something. So maybe it was actually designed to have some give since you will always be touching and pressing on the glass. However, I would expect that rubbery adhesive was intended to let the screen move a little in as you push it, but not somewhat push the screen away from the Back Panel.
Mine creeks where the time/notifications are in the bottom right of the screen
Is anybody willing to try heating up the screen a little bit with a hair dryer and then pressing the screen down until it dries/cures again?
I know when Anandtech.com described their teardown of the Prime, they used this method (hair-dryer/heat-gun) to get the screen off. He said he was able to put everything back together after he took it apart (I'm sure he has lots of experience though). Maybe this could actually be a really simple solution?
Having the same issue here guys. Just noticed it last night-I bought mine from Office Depot and I went and exchanged it right away. I opened my new one and it has the same issue. From what I am reading here it looks like it's a wide-spread issue and almost everyone has it.
I was wondering the same thing-how can I glue it to the back panel so it doesn't move. Mine has it above the speaker and a little bit on the other side where the volume keys are.
Any ideas on how to fix it?
Thanks.

There is abthred in the general section on disassembling the Prime and they say not to heat up the unit since the screen isn't glued in it is dual tape of some sort. I am having the same issue and already exchanged mine-have the issue on the new unit too. Not sure if I should try to exchange it again...no fix yet, that I am aware of at least

LCD/Glass seperating from the unit?

Alright. So after almost a month of use, aside from the random ICS lockup/reboots and babying the ASUS Transformer Prime. I looked at the top of my prime, and behold - there was a gap between the screen and the aluminum unit in which I can peak into some of the internals. I got scared as hell and briefly pressed it in. I also began to notice that the sides aren't so flush with the aluminum as well. Anybody notice this?

Did you notice if the body of the Prime is bowing or warped?
It's kind of pointless posting pics now after I snapped it back in. I'm not going to attempt to simulate what happened. The gap before I snapped it in was almost a centimeter big.
"I'm not sure if you guys can see it. But there are miniscule gaps between the aluminum unit and the screen unit about a millimeter or two thick. This was AFTER I discovered that there was a gaping hole on the top of my Prime in which I promptly pressed the screen and snapped it back in. After a month of babying my Prime, I finally discover the physical imperfections of mine."
The gaps really do look bigger in real life. They're uneven as well. one side might be flush, the other might be gapping by 1-2mm.
Here I recorded a video of how my prime looks. The camera really downplays the gaps. You should watch it in 720p fullscreen to get a glimpse of what im talkin about.

A centimeter!? That's more than the thickness of the entire device, are you sure you didn't get the device damaged, since I see no reason whatsoever why would a device pop open for a centimeter. TF201 is not built 'under pressure' to do that, the only pressure that might come from is if the aluminum body is slightly warped, but that would not really cause an entire centimeter gap either (though it does cause those very small gaps).

Glass Back Cracked!

Nooooo!!!!
I have only had my phone for 2 weeks and I was sitting outside of Starbucks with my phone on my lap, and this yellow jacket bee kept flying around me. So I stood up to get away from it, while forgetting my phone was on my lap. CRASH! My V30 without a case falls off my lap about 20 inches down onto the cement.
It caused a small spider web crack in the corner of the back glass. One of then cracks extends to the camera lens area. On thr bright side the screen is fine and the camera lens is fine with no cracks. Plus its only mostly the corner thats cracked on the back. But still, it really really sucks since I just got this phone.
I know some of you are thinking I was stupid for not having a case. Maybe so, but keep in mind I pretty much never had cases on my 6P or my S7 Edge. I only dropped my 6P once real bad on a hard surface (fell out of pants with a smaller pocket while sitting) which only left a scuff on the edge with the display fine, and never once dropped my S7 on a hard surface in over a year with it. So I have always been super careful with my phones. Never dropping my phone in years that was a result of my clumsiness or carless.
I guess its just a matter of time though no matter how careful you are handling your phone. Its bound to fall somehow when its not your fault. Like sliding off a slippery surface, falling out of a small pocket, or similar. Anyways I called a local phone repair shop and the good news is the back glass is only $70-$75.
I don't think I am going to get it done just yet since the display is fine, camera lens is fine, and its only the corner of the back. But I probably will eventually before I resell the phone in 1-2 years. Anyways kind of disappointed a military certified phone cracked for such short fall. This is why I prefer metal backed phones so much more. Anyways hopefully this info of how easy it cracks and the cost to replace the back out there being pretty cheap helps some others out there.
*Puts case back on my V30*
Yeah, I watched a couple of videos on what happens to GG 4 & 5 with drop tests and decided mine would stay in a case. Added bonus of keeping finger prints off of the actual phone back and just on a plastic case.
I have several cases I've bought to put on my LG V30 when I actually buy the phone. You can buy very good cases for even a couple of dollars on ebay. I started the LG V30 cases thread, because most people don't know that.
You can even buy clear cases if you still want to show off the phone.

If the glass is still smooth, you can always put a skin over it.
This is one concern causing me pause in my purchase. Why there can't be a nice carbon fiber replacement back for this phone, I don't know. Motorola had a good idea going with the "design your own phone" during the Droid Turbo / Turbo 2 days, they just gave up on it too early.

That's the beauty of carbon fiber composites. The resin it's molded in is waterproof, gluing is about the only way to attach it to anything, it can be built up as thick as needed to create a reliable sealing edge or stiffness to the back. And it's radio transparent, so no issue with wireless charging. It can be textured, to make it more grippy.
The ccf aesthetic isn't for everyone, I get that, but it would be great as an option, and would be completely workable.
That is a bummer that it cracked. I am super impressed by the strength of this device though, my embarrassing story about it. Bought a new TV for my living room, decided I needed to take my old TV down to the basement and thought I could wrangle the 60" TV by myself, took two steps down and slipped, fell super hard all the way down the stairs with my phone in my back pocket. Huge bruises on my back, butt, arm and legs, the phone I was positive was a goner. Took it out of the case and to my amazement not a scratch and the glass looks perfect, however there is a size-able dent on one side of the phone and it is pushing the screen out. Everything works perfect and like I said, it did not crack at all, I am not a small guy, between me and the TV it took a 300 lb hit on the edge of a step and then several more hits down the stairs.
Of course I went to T-Mobile and they laughed and said "We can't take a bent phone back" luckily I am still in the 14 days grace period and will be adding insurance so I can get a replacement. It works, but is a little annoying to use this way. And to end the story on a high note, I did save the TV, did not let go of it!

That is a bummer that it cracked. I am super impressed by the strength of this device though, my embarrassing story about it. A quick and healthy recovery!
My wife had dropped her v30 TWICE already in a week... Both times it luckily hit a corner and no glass cracked or scratched. Just a scuff on the metal of each bottom corner. So damn lucky with that so far... her case finally showed up the day after the second drop.

Whyyyy couldn't have mine done that?!
Actually I think the sides of this phone are super reinforced. Way more than more glass phones. I think mine just fell at the absolute worst angle that hit it just right. Just thankfully it was not the display!

Thanks! I also found the glass back is on Ebay for only about $18 and comes with the little tool to replace it. So I might just do that myself. I watched a video of how to take the back off.
I only have 2 worries if I do it myself.
1.) Making sure the new glass back seals on tight enough still be at least mostly water proof and
2.) Removing the finger print sensor from the old back to the new back. The video I watched doesnt show how to remove the finger print sensor. But once I find a video on someone removing and reattaching the finger print sensor, then I will pull the trigger for the $18 glass back.
So much for military certified durability  :crying:
Also you'll lose the ip68 rating by replacing that yourself most lowly just a heads up. Watch the video of Jerry rig everything. When he made a clear v30. Really good on how to open phone
Happened to one of the phones on my account. Fell about 3 feet on a wood floor and the back has a hairline crack. I'll skin it, put it in a case and be done with it.

That's quite a story! That should be in a V30 durability ad. Opening shot of the big dent and bulged screen with the phone speaking in "android voice" saying, "yeah, I took quite a beating, but you should see the other guy!" Then a fade in shot of you looking all sheepish and bruised from head to toe with a final fade out slow-mo reenactment of the fateful tussle.
