[Q] New owner, having few Qs - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone! I just got my 16gb wifi model a few days ago. I'm from Canada. I think it's a very nice device, I love it, but have a few questions. First I noticed that the device seems to be a little laggy sometimes, specifically when you switch apps, or when in the browser or using the keyboard? Is there any way to make this better?
I have taken the habit of using the task manager to close unused apps, is this a good thing to do? I have the feeling that mine came with stuff that I don't really need/want. For exemple, There is a ^ in the bottom bar that I always tend to open by accident, this bar open another row of icon. Also there is a screenshot icon on the bar. Is this something to do with the TouchWiz? How much clog/more memory is the touch wiz using? Maybe without it I could gain some speed. I have removed all the widgets to make things better and I use a simple wallpaper.
I'm not into flashing for now, I'm not mentally ready, is there anything else I can do to improve speed and responsiveness?
Also, I have a blackberry and I am used to receive instant notifications for facebook. Is there an equivalent app for facebook for the tab?
Thanks.

First things first, Id root it. Its VERY easy. If you have issues with the Mass storage device not being seen my the PC, make sure usb debugging is off. Also, after you root it throw on Pershoots TW UX version of his kernel.
Then download set cpu and OC it to 1400. And if you want to put on a rom, put on task650s rom.
after that all lag is pretty much gone.

Do you have a link to the best rooting instructions? Also a link to OC?

Sure most guys will tell you to search, but thats not me. I'll help you out bro, np
1) how to root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239185
That is a video with a written tutorial too. That should do ya
2) OC'ing kernel
Pershoot is the one that made it. It also have a nice VooDoo integrated sound matrix ( or whatever ) and it sounds crazy good. To take advantage of it, flash his kernel and then market VooDoo and download that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138167
If you have a touchwiz / WIFI rom/tablet.. Then you need to download the kernel off of his site that has TW / UX in the title of the link.

I could not agree more with this, I just got done running benchmarks with just Task650's ROM, loading up the newest pershoot kernel now. Even with just the ROM lag is pretty much gone

Yeah Mann benchmarks don't mean much in terms of Android. But it's a good placebo for some

Well, i admit that it is tempting to install a rom. I dont understand tho why it is necessary to clear up the slowness problem. Ppl at samsung need to work more to optimise their sh.t

Im not sure if I know what you mean... what do you mean on you dont understand why its is necessart to clear up the slowness problem? It is because there is soo much bloat and things misplaced. Its kinda crazy. but after you run an optimized ROM and the kernel at 1.4ghz.. its night a day..

Hie guys. I am new to SGT 10.1 and to this forum.
[Nice little introducing video btw].
I just reply to this thread not to open a new one and start asking questions over there
From what you guys discussed above, after rooting the device and OC it, the lags will go away. How much does OC it to 1.4 affect the battery life and heat? I searched and most people posted it doesn't heat up the tablet much. I guess it is the same to you guys?
If I have rooted my tab and OC it to 1.4. Let says something gone wrong with the hardware of my tab and I would like to exchange it, am I able to un-root it and de-clock to 1.0 before I return?
Cheers

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

The overclock with help with lags. But not all of the lags are based off of speed issues. Some are code related. But in the end, yes it will speed up nicely, and be more fluid.
The heat and battery isn't really an issue. But being that all of the dev'ing going on is all new. Its a wait and see thing. But in all respects, it should be just fine.
And I haven't looked into unrooting, but I'm almost 100% positive that it can be done.

I actually have a question about OCing. I flashed the Starburst ROM on my tab, but no custom kernal. Is it still OK to download set CPU and crank it to 1.4ghz? (I've OCed computers 'til they cried, but never phones or tablets )

[Q] Which ROM? What's Voodoo? What's Touchwiz?

I'm due to get my GT10.1 on Thursday and I've been planning what ROM to put on it if one is required.
Firstly, from reading around I see people mention Voodoo sound and there seems to be quite a demand for it. Is this come kind of hack or update to improve sound quality?
Secondly, I'm guessing Touchwiz is Samsung's own UI type thing, kinda like HTC Sense?
Lastly, the ROM
I've looked at a few roms. I like my devices to look and work as intended by the manufacturer, but also have a few extra features.
I looked at Task's ROM but it doesn't seem to include Voodoo stuff from what I've read. I could be wrong though.
The next ROM I found which interests me is Bonsai 0.3.0. I don't usually trust anything outside of XDA, but this looks quite decent and has everything I'd want in a ROM. What are people's experience with it?
I'm guessing that flashing a ROM is as simple as following this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150732 or this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130574
Then flashing the ROM from Recovery.
I know these may seem like obvious questions, but I want to be 100% sure that what I've researched is correct before I do anything!

Voodoo isn't built into a rom. That is kernel related. So if you wanna give voodoo a shot you would have to flash pershoots kernel. He has integrated it in. As for roms. if you want touchwhiz and you want it to look stock and act as stock, i threw up a totally stock rom in my thread. Starburst is also a great rom.
Thanks for the reply mate!
I'm thinking of flashing Task650 KME with pershot's kernal (boot-cm_2636.4_ux-oc-xtra-vfpv3-d16_fp-082611.zip).
When I get my tab, how will I know if it's KME or KMB ect?

It should say that somewhere in the about tablet window of settings. Make sure you pick the right kernel from pershoot. I believe that's the right one but just make sure its touchwiz if tasks is touchwiz. Also you might want to see how you like stock. Its pretty good stock.
Sent from my Blanco Galaxy Tab 10.1
I am thinking of sticking with Stock as I can't find a ROM I'm 100% happy with the sounds of.
Task's rom sound awesome, but there seem to be a few people with problems. Nothing major, just things like icon res ect.
All I want, is completely stock with TouchWiz and the following:
1. Root
2. Voodoo sound
3. Overclocking to 1.4Ghz
4. Performance
I don't want anything else changing tbh unless it's for enhancements.
I was thinking of cooking my own ROM that meets my requirements but I don't have the time to learn how to do it if I'm honest.
Task's ROM sounds like it meets 99% of my requirements to me, but if anyone has any other suggestions then please do share!
Thanks
Do yourself a favor and stick with the stock ROM. Its the most stable and reliable ROM for the tab 10.1

You can root the tab yourself. What your looking for is all on the kernel side. Stay stock load pershoots kernel. Read the sticky on how to get root and CWM.

Think I'll give this a go too. Will try Task's ROM too to see how they compare and which I prefer.
Just a note: I'm not criticizing Task's ROM. It's excellent work. I'm just trying to get the best out of my Tab for my own use. If I use a Custom it WILL be Task's tbh.
Running Starburst ROM and Pershoot's kernel, Tab runs great!

Got my Tab!
Only problem is that the build number is XXKG8. When I go to Software update it says no updates found. How do I get it to update to KME? :/
Found something interesting.
Went into Download mode and got a Warning about flashing a Custom OS giving me the option to continue or opt out. Never seen this mentioned before, is it normal?
I know it's nothing to worry about, I can obviously make my own mind up, was just wondering if it's new.

You need to Flash CW recovery using the guides in the dev area then flash the zip provided in pershot's Kernal thread.
Make sure your device and firmware are compatible.

[Q] I've Done Research - Still Have Qs.

Alright - I'm not the type to ask questions if I haven't done hours of research already. Please do not tell me to google it, look harder, etc. Some of this stuff has frustrated me to no end, and some of you may be able to answer the question off the top of your head. So why not help out, right? ^^.
I did take a lot of time writing these questions out, and I know that it is quote a long read. If you only want to answer one here and there, that is fine. I GREATLY appreciate all help. If I sound mad at all during the read, please excuse that. If anything I'm a little frustrated, but definitely not mad at anyone or anything. I just want answers.
My Device:
3D with Silverlight/Netarchy-5 as the Kernel, and Synergy Rev. 316 2.3.3 as my Rom. So far, I have only been able to get a max quadrant score of 2600. Sort of disappointing compared to my last kernel/rom build, especially when I saw all the good Quadrant scores on Synergy's thread (and yes, I tested Ziggy's Stock Kernel too that came with it, but with no change in Quadrant scores).
I want to stick to 2.3.3 until they have overclocking for 2.3.4.
My old Kernel + Rom build was the RCMIX Kernel that could OC to 2050, and the Shooter Rewind 3D ROM. With this set-up, I was able to get a Quadrant score of 3,660.
Unanswered Questions (Or Questions I am still confused on):
2) In the Kernel threads, I always try to find which one will provide the best performance. I have a 4500 mah battery, so I usually can make almost anything last 2+ days for me. However, I'm not sure how to compare Kernels and determine what is better. This is what is listed under RCMIX:
V(R) I/O
SLQB
WIFI FIX
CIFS
TUN
NLS
WIMAX SUPPORT
Wifi Tweak to connect a weaker signal -108db over stock -88db
Under Silverneedle, the other one I think of using, it says:
- CIFS
- TUN
- Overclock up to 1.7ghz (this will likely be expanded in future builds)
- JHash3
- The usual assortment of build tweaks that those familiar with my previous work have come to expect
- Base updated to 2.6.35.14
HOW am I supposed to compare those two performance wise? Also, what does "TUN," "NLS," "V(R) I/O," and "SLQB," "JHash3," "CIFS," etc, mean? I'm assuming WIMAX is for 4g, but I'm not even entirely sure of that.
3) EXT4. I read the thread here, but a lot isn't explained. It says "You should only need to convert to ext4 optimized if you wipe data/nandroid" - is this just system data? I'm assuming it wouldn't wipe SD Card Data, correct? So basically it is like a Factory Reset? But then it says to flash "svn rev 450 or higher" after. Where would I get the Synergy's revised 450 version when I can only get the rev 316 version myself?
5) Virtuous OC MOD. Oh yes - this has probably given me the most trouble than anything. I used to use SetCPU. When I saw that Mod, I uninstalled it, installed virtuous, and it didn't work. I couldn't edit my files via terminal emulator given su permissions, via root explorer, anything. So I thought there was a conflict through some file left by setcpu and virtuous. SO I did a factory reset.
I then installed rev 316 synergy and RCMIX 4.2 with a 1.8ghz allowable OC on it, and also flashed the virtuous oc + dual core mod. First off, I have no clue what the difference is between DualCore VOC and DualCore 1.1 besides the fact that he said 1.1 solved some lag issue some were experiencing. So I installed that, naturally. Saw nothing change whatsoever. I then tried to edit my Virtuous OC files, which was a success! However, when I ran the command "cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq" - which is in his thread to determine if it is working, it showed the unedited number.
So I then did a normal reboot, in hopes it needed init.d to trigger, and I got stuck in an infinite reboot.
Lastly, I installed rev 316 by synergy again with silverneedle/netarchy 5 kernel. And that's where I am now. What did I do wrong?
6) Chainfire 3D / Turbo 3D (can't find link atm, but each are from the same creator). Will this help quadrant scores? What is this used for? Is it helpful?
8) What's the point of the V6 Supercharger for Android? How does it improve memory? Does it do the same thing as far as EXT4 is concerned? Is it already implemented in the current roms/kernels?
9) Besides my questions, is there a kernel or rom that you suggest for the best speed/performance, and why?
10) As far as Dual Core goes, as it been more bad than good? I've seen a lot of posts about people lagging with it on. Does it actually help?
11) Without any Dual Core mod on, what does the second CPU normally do anyways? Why would anyone make a dual-core phone without utilizing both dual cores? Or did we lose the dual core availability when we rooted our phones, and we are just now getting some beta beginnings of it back?
Thanks for anyone's time who reads any part of this, and thanks in advance to those who can answer some of them too.
Questions Answered (Thanks for those that helped!!):
If you believe there is more that could have been said in an answer, or that an answer is wrong feel free to add-on! Otherwise, I'm satisfied with the answers I have received and believe them to be right.
1) I've read through the Synergy thread, mostly the beginning and ending pages, and people talk about Revisions that are better than other (obviously). I just hooked up my SVN File Updater for the Nightly Updates, so would I not have access to anything later than Rev 316, but older than the current 2.3.4 version? I really would like to have access to the latest 2.3.3 build that works the best, which would probably include the EXT4.
1-Answer by life64x) 318 is the latest 2.3.3 and the last 2.3.3. Since they upgraded to 2.3.4
4) Let's say I backup my entire system apps + data using Titanium. Does that mean after I Wipe/Reset and go to a different rom/kern, or sense to aosp, that if I restored EVERYTHING, it would still work? Or should I only restore the things I "essentially" need?
4-Answer by life64x) Not all your system apps will be restored...sense...sense widgets etc. Data yes.. user apps will be restored. | I then asked "So titanium won't restore things incompatible with the ROM I am on, even if I hit restore all?" | Answer by life64x: That's correct becuase sometimes it won't let you...say different versions of rosie.apk or framework stuff that deals with sense UI.
7) What is "Cyanogen?" I don't understand if that is a type of software, group of people, or what the purpose of whatever that word is.
7-Answer by life64x and phatmanxxl)Cyanogen is the handle of a person that created a alternate android OS..away from manufacture stock software that is smaller and faster...bloateware removed, basic android is there. Cyanogen is also the name of the product from them. I forgot his name, but he developed a alternate source open source I might add for our phones and now tablets. Many phones have it and each phone has developers for it also. ASOP ROMs such as CM7 and MIUI are not available for the EVO3d yet, they are still in development.

Ah, I suppose I just read those posts wrong in that thread. I assumed that the 2.3.4 version started near revision 500. Definitely a bummer. I tried their latest 2.3.4 version just to see what it was like and it is much cleaner than the 2.3.3 rev 318 version. Guess I'll wait for an OC on 2.3.4 to go back to Synergy Sense.
As for "other testing methods" - what would you recommend? Anything in specific?
And what do you mean by "gamer." What would qualify as a "gamer" for HTC 3D? For example, I do play Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time on my phone ^^. It ran fine on RCMIX 2.2.3 and Rewind Shooter as long as I used SetCPU to 1728 max and 1080 min (or higher min, depending on if I had any problems). Haven't tried on my latest setup though.
Thanks again for your help!

I actually just flashed that yesterday night and am loving how much free RAM space I have. Currently have 305MB used and 497MB free. I love having extra space. I have a few problems with it, but nothing worth complaining over really. Stock Kernel that comes with it is probably best, right? Thanks for helping =-).

[Q] LOW performance on Galaxy S3!

Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing this, or does anyone have a solution?
For some reason i'm not expereincing the full thrust of performance the Galaxy S3 has to offer.
The home screens 'jolt' when moving left to right, but the more annoying thing is that widgets (like the weather etc) KEEP disappearing and reloading (doesnt take long to reload, fine, but still! Galaxy S2 didnt do this!)
This was all noticiable in the 'TouchWiz' Launcher, so i thought i would try another launcher... Nope, same thing!! Apex, Launcher Pro, GO Launcher etc..
Also, some apps crash, more than the occasional crash you would experience on the S2.
It also freezes up on my for about 10 seconds before reloading the widgets/icons...
I've gone down SO many routes. Its definetly not that theres too much running, because i find myself closing apps through task manager ALL the time, more than i should need to ...But even with NO apps running, same thing
I just dont get, does anyone have a solution or could shed some light on WHY this is happening? I've hit a brick wall for trying to stop this and am hoping that its not just a 'dodgy device'!
Thank you to whoever responds...
Def sounds like a dud there. Try going into Apex launcher and tick the setting to keep the launcher in ram. Ive heard loads of problems about TW reloading itself after running things like the web browser and gaming :/
Dude just flash custom rom....or latest stock rom.

Shouldn't NEED to be flashing anything, mine was sheer awesome out of the box.
All I've done was flash the insecure kernel... which is the same just adb etc. enabled, and rooted.

Networks do not matter with custom ROMs, as long as you are flashing a ROM for the right phone i.e. the international version, and not the north american version. (which you don't need to worry about yet because it's not out yet)
Check if you have Power Saving turned off. It throttles the CPU making scrolling etc noticeably slower.
Mine loads the weather widget coming out of S-Voice. But other than that never misses a beat. Smooth even when using 90% of its ram.
Did a test of its speed and its above the Asus prime easy, so sounds like you have an issue.

Similar issue with my phone... through I have not yet copied my songs and data... but exactly the similar problem...
same here
Man same thing here - only been 4 days since i bought my gs3 and i'm having issues.. i was running a benchmark when i saw cpu it said 1000MHz and max cycles 1400MHz i think we got a gs3 without exynos system - like they did with galaxy s2 had the i9100G model. Of tjis is the case and i find out i'm gonna spend any ounce of energy i have getting it replaced. The worst thibg is the browser cant handle videos on youtube. Performance is pathetic and weirdest tthibg i didnt have flipboard pre loaded on my gs3. Even now im on my gs3 and the browser wont let me fix "thing" that i wrote in the previous sentence. Totally shud have gotten htc one x
you all can flash latest version which should help with launcher redraw ... and after that do a full hard reset: *2767*3855#

Not having any issues. Suggest you uninstall apps and track down what's causing you pain or take it back. There is nothing wrong with this phone. If you are having slow performance obviously a quad core phone may I suggest an iphone.
Yeah I'm being a prick but common sense and a bit of troubleshooting will teach you a life skill.

This did the trick for me. Also upgrading your firmware would also help.

Same for me
The thing is that a big company that is trying to resemble other competitors cant release a product that will act that way and call it their flag ship.... Most of the owners wont twik it. the phone its a big draw back for me and disappointment... Really miss my s2 some times. Its one thing to pile new features wether they work or not and make the product worse than its predecessor. Big big disappointment. Happy with the screen, battery and looks though will wait for a proper Rom or Google clean products that are to come.

Your S2 has had a years worth of development and optimization. I bet you'll say the same about your S3 when we're all using the S4.
I completely agree with the guy. My most common activity on my phone is browsing whilst listening to music, and this phone just can't hack it. Waaaay too regular cut outs, I'm pissed off.
Remove all bloatware and corresponding background services, get a good kernel (Franco r5 is great), you'll find phone is much better, in a few months, it will have moved on loads and will be so much better

Yall are the odd ones out then. my phone was actually VERY VERY good at multi tasking out of the box. i could surf the web, play my music, and watch a movie with super video....and never get redraws, or hickups, leave apps open and keep going......i could not get it to do any lagging unless you speaking of the micro stutter in home screens. which is gone now with a custom rom and a few misc things here and there.
yall seem to keep wanting to blame it on the phone.....i dont quite understand this.

Really disappointed with S2!

Hi,
I bought my GS2 less than a week ago, and I'm really disappointed with it!
I rooted and installed custom rom and kernel the day I got it, and since then I've witnessed literally tens of fatal bugs that cause dirty shutdown(Usually I need to remove the battery). Also, apps force close too often. And on top of that I find my device very slow!
I had SE Arc S before GS2. I wanted S2 because I wanted better performance. I didn't get the performance, my Arc was way faster, even despite the two times lower benchmark scores. I'm using Apex Launcher, and every time I scroll the screen, I can clearly see the wallpaper "flashing", seems like it's too "heavy" for a dual-core CPU and probably for the best mobile GPU! Also, when I open a folder, it lags notably!
I have tested about ten different roms, including AOKP(RR & Foxhound), Samsung stock(Omega & Wanam) and MIUI(RGUI and some other which's name I don't remember). Also kernels like Sayah & NEAK. So far, I haven't got a stable nor a fast experience!
I know this isn't the S2 that is known for its performance and quality, this is something different! What could possibly be the cause of my problem? Games run well, but despite that, my phone is slower than a Sony Ericsson(single core & Adreno)!
Please help me, I know S2 can do better!
Mayby you installed a buggy and slow rom and kernel? Flash CM7 or a stock rom and you will be surprised
Edit:
I see that you already tried other roms, go back to the shop you bought it, mayby they can help you...

Your experience is different to 90% of people who post here.
There are no shortcuts to having a phone setup/running the way you want to.
I emphasised that last bit because anyone who offers you anything but the most generic advice will be telling you what works for them, with the way they use the phone & the way they have it set up. If you follow said advice, chances are you won't end up with the results you're looking for.
My advice is to either persevere & keep tinkering with the phone (if you're not a person who likes to do this kind of thing, you're probably in the wrong place), or sell it & get something else.
You're obviously looking for shortcuts/quick fixes, and I'm telling you there aren't any.
Try Ollo Rom, def the best and most stable from IMO

hi
this is very interesting. its some time i don't respond to posts. i am no guru to galaxy s2 but i think the phone is ok. first install stock rom to see if the phone is ok. i mean is charging ok and has no hardware problems. maybe its something hardware and u can take it back to the service and for that u need stock. i think u rushed a little custom roms install. if device is ok then flash a custom kernel like cf root or speedmod kernel to have root and use titanium backup to freeze some bloatware. install apex launcher and see if u get lag. use an app like 2nd core to see if your cpu is working with 2 cores and has hotplug ok. and cpu spy for deep sleep issues. then install battery monitor widget from 3c to see the heating from battery. it should stay between 25 and 41 celsius. then if is ok install a custom rom. i tested wanam, vk and now neatromlite. best satisfaction was with 2.3.6 la4 rom from gb by krinyo but that was in gb.
I recommend Resurrection Remix 2.3

I'm not usually "question asker" persons, I tend to solve my problems myself. But as said, this problem is very absurd since this phone is a true high end. I'm on Cyanogen9, a rom that I've had really good memories(well CM7 anyway)and I'm finding this little bit faster. This isn't a solution anyway, just avoiding the problem. I'm gonna try to go back to completely stock and customize it again.
Thanks for answers, really appreciate.
Ps. I'm don't fancy going back to Gingerbread

Try resurrection 2.4 or rootbox. They are the best roms for the s2, in my opinion. You shouldn't be disappointed.

That's a really good idea.
Go back to an ICS stock rom you know works fairly well, and go from there. Root the phone first, do a Nandroid backup before you make any other changes/flash any custom roms so you have a backup of a good setup as close as possible to stock (just with a rooted kernel).
Then you can try some roms out, maybe try out a couple of kernels. Best way to approach it is not to make too many changes at once I.E if you flash a rom, try it out for a bit with the supplied kernel before you start trying other kernels with it.
BetterBatteryStats (search for it on here/Google Play) can be invaluable so far as pinning down & eliminating any apps/processes that are causing unwanted battery drain. Also, give benchmarks too much of your time. They're not even close to an approximation of real world use of the phone.
And the other best bit of advice I can give you is read. A lot. Then read some more. Then keep reading till your eyes fall out. Particularly read anything you can get your hands on relating to the particular rom/kernel you're wanting to try out. Read the whole thread (even if it's 100's of pages). That's how you pick up little tricks/knowledge, by reading & then trying stuff out.
Edit - Also, the moment you root your phone & before you do anything else, get Hellcat's kTool from Google Play & backup your EFS. Keep a copy on your external SD card in the phone if you have one, and definitely keep a copy on your PC (and on an external drive or CD/DVD if you're really paranoid). You'd be surprised how many people we get on here with borked EFS/no IMEI & most (90%) don't have a backup.

I had something similar happen to me. I wanted to cry. But try this first (nobody likes hearing a grown man crying).
1- Restore your nandroid backup to get back to stock (you did do a nandroid back... Did you?)
2- Flash a STOCK ICS Rom. Any will do. As long as it's stock.
3- Proceed to flash any custom ICS rom of your choice
4- Flash any kernel of your choice
5- Enjoy
Thing is, some custom roms don't play nicely when you upgrade from gingerbread to ICS directly. Doing the above mentioned should do the trick.

Try stock ROM with speedmod kernel. Or if you want batterylife, try undervolting kernels that are based on speedmod, like phenomenal or apollo kernel. Try also dorimanx kernel

P7510 to Flash or not to Flash

Hello,
I've got a P7510 on stock 4.0.4 that's been sitting around. Sometimes the kids play with it, but it's so slow that I don't use it anymore. In the past, I haven't used custom ROM's because for the most part my Android devices have done what I need them to do. In this case though, the P7510 is pretty abysmal. I've done a ton of reading on XDA and other places and I think I've come to the conclusion that it may not be worth flashing this unit. It seems that anything KitKat or JB is buggy and HC ROM's give little performance increase. I guess this is a last ditch effort to find out if there is in fact a ROM out there that increases the performance of this unit without loosing functionality. I've seen reports of Wifi not working, bad Youtube performance, Google Play problems etc... If it's time to retire it, so be it, but it would be cool if I could get more life out of it.
Currently I have it rooted using CWM 5.0.27 and I've found two prospects below. I believe CM brings it to Jelly Bean and Nameless brings it to KitKat.
cm-10.1-20140216-NIGHTLY-p4wifi.zip
nameless-4.4.2-20140322-p4wifi-HOMEMADE.zip
Any other suggestions?
Also, once a new ROM is loaded will I loose all current settings? I've seen mixed results on this subject. Some users seem to think you don't and some say you will during the data wipe. I've done a Nandroid backup and moved it off the SDCARD just in case. There are some games on it and the kids would lose their progress if wiped. Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to retain this data if possible.
Thanks for any help!

the most stable fast rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2445431 :good:
Thanks. I was determined this evening and found a solution that worked great for me and I didn't need to load a ROM. I installed the Mackay 1.5 kernel and overclocked with SetCPU using Governor ondemand Max 1400MHz / Min 216MHz. I turned off Window animation scale and Transition animation scale in the Developer options. So far everything is faster, and no stability issues. HD in Youtube and Netflix seems to work fine where before it was extremely jittery. We'll see how this all affects battery life, but so far I'm very pleased.
Thanks XDA!!

Even without flashing custom kernel, stock ICS is good enough as it is. Root it, add busybox and init.d support, debloat your tab of unnecessary apps, install Greenify, try flashing performance scripts (e.g., V6, operation killjoy, crossbreeder, etc.).
Hey man, to totally solve the youtube hd lag problem, go to cwm recovery and format sdcard.
That's it.
I saw that solution long time ago and I didn't try. ( that solution was given by a samsung customer service). I tried several days ago and , wooow, it works.
But remember, it works on ICS only. Neither 4.3 or 4.4.
So, my recommendation is not to flash any 4.3 or 4.4 rom. toldo's ICS roms ( stock or jellybean ics) are the best choice out there. If youtube HD is not essential to you and you really want to try newer verisons , I would suggest OMNI 4.3 rom , not the 4.4. The Omni 4.3 rom is the smoothest 4.3 rom. of course, the youtube hd is still lagging. even you overclock it.

Thanks, I may try this if it gets bad again. The tablet has been running great with the overclock. I ended up setting the governor to performance, which does impact battery life but not enough to make it terrible. Videos on Netflix and Youtube work fine on this setting.
Newbie question - how to?

I'd really like to give this a try. But unfortunately, I'm really new to working with Android devices. I know that this is a total newbie question, but can someone give me a pointer to how to get started with this? I can see that the McKay 1.5 kernel that's precompiled for my device (the p7510) looks like it's ready to go. But I don't know how to install it on my device. Is it really just a matter of copying over the current kernel? It seems like that's way too simple and approach to work.
I really feel like I could get this done if I could get a pointer to the steps that need to be accomplished. Can somebody please help?

You mean flashing the kernel? Just download the kennel (the zip file), boot your tab into recovery (I use cwm recovery), then flash the zip fileļ¼Œ wipe dalvik cache. Reboot, done.
