Q HSPDA plus crap speed - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

IM now getting h+ in manchester, I thought this was suppose to improve speed , I'm getting same speeds as on h ... ANY idea why, I'm on 3UK on a UN branded handset
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

Anyone ? What speed should I get on h+ ?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

I got 750kb/s download on 3 bar H+. I'm gonna test on the area I got most with my iPhone 4. Most I got on 3G was 500kb/s 5 bars.

IM glad in not only one thanks according to internet should be 21mb download I dont even get that on my broadband
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

There is actually not much of a difference in speed, not most of the time at least.. Don't let the + in HSPA+ fool you. I too don't see any difference in speed between + and no + and i'm from Singapore.
Sent from my non-Apple device via XDA App

the H+ doesnt have to indicate a higher speed, higher speeds are possible with that yes, however it just shows that the network in that area has been upgraded.. speeds are much more dependent on how many many users are currently using that cell tower etc, and for sure you're ISP capped the speeds well well under the advertised 21Mbps that is "possible" on the technology...

Well I have experience with both H+ and H and I can say that with my operator H is much much faster and I usually get H+ outside of the city in villages etc...
I live in the capital city of my country so I am pretty sure they would use + in the city if it was faster instead of the countryside.
With H I usually get from 10 to 14mbps
With H+ 300-900 kbps max
But, of course I'm not an expert, so it may be just my ISP being crazy, or testing h+ on small scale, but why would it be slower ? questions questions questions !

thanks i got all excited when i saw the plus today

where are u to get upto 14mb ? i only get 10 on my proper broadband

I think there are two parts to the answer:-
1) Your phone's setup. There are various posts/threads here about possible "tweaks" such as disabling fast dormancy, editing system files etc.
2) Your service provider's upload/download data rate capping. Personally I find it scandalous that most providers have a hidden data rate cap on their users. They are upfront about the total data limits, but tend to hide the hidden rate cap somewhere behind their "Acceptable Use" policies.
Therefore even if you tweak your settings, you may well be further limited by your provider. I suggest you search this forum and the www for information on this practice and how you might be able to have data rate caps lifted or altered.

You get the speed you pay for. Okay, they always advertise A MAXIMUM SPEED OF XXMBPS!!!!! OMG OMG!!!111! but of course you'll almost never reach the maximum. Only in a perfect condition.

Why so slooooow? (AT&T 3G/HSDPA question)

Hello all - I don't know if there's any answer to this or not but thought I'd throw it out there. I updated Android myself to 2.1 since apparently AT&T doesn't feel the need to. That has been a fine experience and I've experience nothing negative aside from the wireless network speed. My phone now always has the H (for HSDPA from what I understand) instead of of 3G, but downloads, web browsing, and YouTube are all way slower than they were before. It takes 10 - 15 seconds to download a 750k app usually. I have ran the speed test app from speedtest.net and its results confirm this by showing 44 kbps downstream & 750 kbps upstream speeds.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I know that HSDPA is supposed to be faster than 3G but this is unbearable - I am almost tempted to use EDGE exclusively because that is all I pick up at home (EDGE service that is) and I get better performance when using the browser than I do with HSDPA (although that is probably more mental than anything since when on HSDPA I am sitting there staring at the phone thinking "What is taking so long!" and when on EDGE I choose something and then don't worry about it for a few because I know it will take some time.
Thanks for any advice!

This is probably a network coverage issue and nothing you can do about it from a phone standpoint.
Ha! I love the first response had a joker pic because I was thinking of the joker when I wrote "why so sloooow".
Anyways when you say coverage what do you mean precisely? do you simply mean at&t hasnt done enough in my area for hsdpa to be effective? I do always have a full 4 bars of strength on it pretty much.
Thanks!

Yes, I mean AT&T. Having four bars means that you have a good signal. It does not indicate however how much bandwidth AT&T has allocated to that particular area/tower.
Think of it like a wireless router at home or office. On your laptop or computer, you see that you have a strong WiFi signal but, that does not mean that you have a fast connection as that depends on your DSL/cable connection.
Get my point?
Got it, that's what I feared. So in essence by improving my phone with 2.1 I screwed my phone (currently) with hsdpa

No, it did not screw your phone. Your phone is innocent here. It is probably the network. AT&T may have a problem in that area. Did you try the speed somewhere else?
Nope, haven't tried it anywhere else. I didn't mean screw my phone, what I, meant was if at&t is not so good with hsdpa in my area I am stuck with those speeds until that is resolved because I can't force 3g (my speed when I had iphone 3g was usually around 1 mbps)
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
I am on att also with the 2.1, luckily im in an area where i get around 2mb/2mb sometimes faster, sometimes slower. Did you try the setting in wirelessnetworks/mobile networks/network mode/ tick wcdma only if not on H. could help not sure, just a thought.

Your phone automatically switches between H/3G/E where available. I also have AT&T and have debranded my phone and did not notice any lag.
your problem is AT&T.
H is higher than 3G. if you got problems with it it`s because the signal is strong enough to use H but it preforms worse than 3G (cunfusing ah?!)
Well I was outside of my town the other day, in the country and noticed I was in hsdpa somehow so I ran a test and out there I was getting on average about 3.7 mbps. I guess where I am most of the time just isn't an optimal spot. Thanks all for the responses!

Absurdly slow on 3G signals??

Does anyone else on Tmo/Orange Uk have issues with 3G speeds? Mine are much slower than on the SGS and I can't figure out why.... I'm starting to worry if my phone has a fault ....
anyone had issues?
thanks!!
Dont think it's your phones fault. I get up to 4mbps everytime i take a test, and i got only 2mbps with my desire so, yeh this phone rocks.

just 3G speeds? or with 'H' aswell? download 'speedtest' from android market(free), if your download speed hovers around 356-357kbs, then I would say your download speed is capped.I'm with t-mobile, and mine was. I had to phone and get through to their techy dept and get them to enable 'Hspda'

http://blog.ruggedandmobile.com/2010/01/26/a-guide-on-the-difference-between-gprs-edge-3g-and-hsdpa/
G - this stands for GPRS, and is the slowest data transfer method (approx 32 - 48 Kbps)
3G - This is the next level available on T-Mobile, and is around 10 times faster (384 Kbps)
H - stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access, and is essentially 3.5G. In theory, TM's network
can transfer at 7.2Mbps, but real world tests tend to average out at around 2 Mbps, still significantly
faster than 3G
There is also HSDPA+(H+) which is even faster.
Hope this helps explain

Nice details, thanks bud! i guess my desire wasn't capable of doing 4mbps, it only got upto 2 while sgs2 gets upto 4mbps which is awesome

Maybe Sprint is Upgrading 3g

So I usually check the news in the morning and today (day before the announcement) I noticed that the web pages were loading super fast so I did Speed test and I'm getting crazy 2mbps/d and 1.3mbps/u! I'm usually in the 200kbps/140kbps. I figure that they're testing out beforehand to make sure its running well. What are you guys getting?

287k down, 142k up. Central PA. But if I remember, NYC was @ the same. My 4G in NYC was like 9M down and 3M up? Cannot remember. My phone USUALLY flys as it is on 3G and I never really think about it.
It would be nice, I have never seen 3G speeds on any CDMA network in my area above 500k - including Verizon, I actually see better more consistent speeds with Sprint than VZW.
I have my doubts though, living in the sticks really does have advantages, but stuff like this sucks.
I just did the speed test and on 3g i got 2.34mbps down and .64 mbps up. Those are pretty standard numbers for me. I do have an airave at home so don' know if that is making a difference.

My bad, I did not have my glasses on. 2.8Md/1.4Mu (missed some zeros). All Networks are improving 3G (the currently majority of their base model phones) by using different forms of compression for greater speeds. Oh well..........
I lost 3g data connectivity entirely today. I have full bars like I usually do but can't get any data through.

My data connection is suddenly being very intermittent, too.
I'll try updating my PRL and Profile.... See if that helps at all.
My websurfing is flaky as heck, my Google Talk connection keeps going in and out (and taking a long time to re-login) and I can't seem to update the Android market.
I had just run the "supercharger v6" script, but that shouldn't affect my data connection.... right????
Well let's hope for the best. I'm getting full bars everywhere in Anaheim, CA and speed is constant. I just watched my first youtube video without a single hiccup on 3G

I have also noticed improvements in 3g speed from ohio to texas, been testing at points from columbus to dallas fort worth, have seen 2 meg speeds in fort worth and consistently higher speeds overall.
My guess is with the onset of the IPHONE on sprint, sprint has had to get their 3g act together as the IPHONE does not support LTE or WIMAX it is solely 3g so they cannot afford to continue to piss people off with poor 3g performance. I am now seeing the high speeds I used to see before the smartphones came along with my sanyo mm 9000.

3g in my house is usually ~1mb down / 700kb up or so..
Just did a test - 300kb down / 500kb up. This is in the suburbs of san francisco..
(I think we're feeling the iphone saturation..)
I used to get ~1mbps down but in the least three months I've only been getting 30-150 kbps down and 30 kbps up. Totally unusable.

slow data

hey guys, any of you experienced slow data with goldenrod.ko and miks 6.5.8? i'm only hitting 1mbps on my phone :s

Try different sites for speedtest .i always feel the speedtest.in app shows faulty speeds..when i tether data to my lappy it shows 3x speeds..also use uc webbrowser for fastr downloads..

Try the 3G TurboCharger script from here and make sure you are using HDSPA if you want the highest speed ("h" icon in taskbar). The mobile data modes are (from slowest to fastest) GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HDSPA. Each mode display it's first character on the mobile data icon in the status bar.
Will this work on the optimus v? I could always only get 1.3Mbps with bursts up to 2Mbps and never stays at 2Mbps for even a second.
It's universal.
it depends on the operator, and user load at the time of using it...
i constantly get speeds of 5 Mbps while normal downloads and speeds upto 6.5 Mbps when dowloading with IDM.

Wow, you are really lucky 5Mbps, i get 3.5mbps eventhough the server is behind my flat and i only get 2 bars on old baseband while on new baseband i always get full signal...
i also get only 2 or 3 bars, in 3g mode if u get even 1 bar its enough to throttle to max speeds.......
i get same speeds even in 1 bar too..
as i said it depends on the user load not the signal quality, atleast for me.

I thought the max logical speed is 3.1Mbps how can you end up getting higher than what the technology is rated for? Also how would I go about getting this on my phone to try it out? I have been fairly happy getting up to 1.5Mbps but if I can get even faster then I wouldn't mind at all.
max logical speed is 7.2 Mbps(=900kbps) Download speed and 5.76 Mbps Upload speed..
http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_optimus_one_p500-3516.php
Well I have a LG Optimus V and all I can find on data rates is the EVDO rev A which says it can only go up to 3.1Mbps.

Speed test results with edge data AT&T sim

Title says it all. What kind of speed test results is everyone getting and if any tweaks to build props to get there.I am almost always pegged out on signal on edge data which is suppose to be up to 220 KBS but best speed test result i have ever got was 60 KB up and 70 KB down which really sucks. Running evervolv ROM and latest radios and hboot

Edge is very hit and miss... Although 80k-140k should be the typical range, 384k is theoretically the best you can do with Edge on AT&T, Tmo is usually even slower. In my Rez with excellent signal (better than -70 dBm) the best could ever get was around 100kbps down, and in general the specific ROM was irrelevant.
Your EDGE results are actually pretty typical.

Not to argue with your here @REV3NT3CH, but are you sure you mean Edge and not UMTS?
Regular Edge only has a maximum theoretical download rate of about 473.6Kbps using 8-slots of packet data encoded at MCS-9 (8PSK) minus network overhead. That is under optimal lab conditions and almost impossible in the real world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution
Those speeds you are getting are in the neighborhood of standard UMTS or even HSPA
