[Q] Will 3D functionality ever come to ASOP/CM7? - HTC EVO 3D

This might be a stupid question, but does the community ever expect to get 3D functionality in an AOSP build? I am assuming the technology is pretty complicated and is completely part of Sense, so how will this ever work? This worries me slightly...
Also, anyone tried the mirroring on HDMI in toast's CM7 build? These are two deal breakers for me, but at the same time so is HTC's horrible Bluetooth stack

Regarding the bad Bluetooth quality I contacted HTC and they reported it as bug to their devs. I've got a opened ticket for it on their support site. They will contact me, when its fixed.

I would say its completely possible to get 3D in AOSP. A couple factors though.
1.) The evo3D is not as popular as the Evo4G was/is. That may hold up development.
2.) Remember, 4G was only in Sense as well. That had tto be built into AOSP from the ground up.
3.) There are 2 3D phones out right now. So that might help development. Especially since the Thrill doesn't run Sense at all. Its running... Well, whatever the thrill runs on top of Android.
So, I think it'll happen eventually. Just be patient.

Might be totally unrelated, but the heroc's camera was always better on a sense rom than in cm7----are the camera drivers tied entirely to sense?
Sent by Logo the turtle

Pretty sure most of the drivers on E3D are tied into Sense... i think it's time to look into BootManager, dual booting ROMs to get the best of both worlds... for now at least.

Toast already has vidoes with the 3d flag playing on CM7, the driver and source for 3d are released already. I think it will happen, we didn't buy this device for 3d but we found it to be kind of cool. This will be what brings it to CM, that and the best development teams have this device!

Well, as far as taking 3D pictures and video, I'm sure it will come along. Toast is a beast, he'll get it done. Right now, you can still watch 3D videos that you've taken or converted into 3D. Rockplayer reads the 3D videos, as do a few other players.
On a related note, has anyone found a Gallery type program that reads .mpo files as 3D? I love CM, and being able to still watch my 3D videos is a hell of a bonus, but I'd like to still be able to view my 3D pictures too.

Was wondering about that too..

Anyone having buyers remorse?

I ask this question sincerely. Its been hard keeping up with all the topics in this section of the forum, and there are many more complaints about things than real reviews from the people who own the phone. I'm on the fence. I've been looking for objective analysis of the phone from the people who have now had it, going on two days.
So, I ask, does anyone wish they didn't pre order? Anyone definitely bringing it back for something you would define as a deal breaker? I know I have nothing to lose to try it for 30 days, but I'm weighing it out to see if I should wait a while for things to get tidied up before I buy one.
Thanks
I know the release was a bit buggy, but HTC seems pretty good about fixing these issues considering the phone is not even out yet. You can count on the development for this phone skyrocketing once the bootloader becomes unlocked.
I only regret ordering via Early Purchase because my power button's broken, and I'm sitting, staring at my non-functional 3VO, hoping I can get it switched out tomorrow (crosses fingers that stars align).
For the brief time I did use it (finding ways to bypass the power button problem), no complaints.

Yeah, I know its a matter of when, not if on the bootloader so that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Minor bugs are a part of early adoption also. Is the phone really that much better than the OG Evo? I get the specs and all, but I'm running Sense 3.0 on my OG and it runs great. I'm sort of interested in taking 3D pics of my kids and the reports of the camera being better in general is a plus for me.
Thanks for the reply.

Despite any of the complaints or bugs that people have reported, I still say that this is an awesome phone, and don't regret buying it at all. Any of the bugs that are being reported now will likely be handled via ota's in a timely manner. Once the bootloader gets cracked and we can get some some custom roms and kernels on this thing it's all over. This is the smoothest phone I've used, even with stock sense.
EDIT: and after reading your second post, let me say that this thing runs 100% smoother and quicker than any of the 3.0 or 2.1/3.0 'hybrid' roms for the OG Evo. I've ran them all on my Evo, and this thing squashes the 3.0 Evo roms, in terms of speed and smoothness. The hardware is simply far superior on this, so it runs much smoother.

Thanks, this is the stuff I'm looking for. I tend to have periods of buyers remorse on certain purchases and while the bugs seem pretty minor, HTC still has a pretty good record of hot fixing things in short time.
I love the phone. I definitely have some complaints.. some are legit, others are preference based. You're gonna have to physically play around with one before you can really decide if it's for you or not. it is fast and smooth, I do still notice a hang here and there that I'm sure is the fault of Sense 3.0
Hoping to get this thing rooted but, it will be incredibly tough if HTC doesn't keep their promise. Still. rooted or not, I will keep this phone for at least a year..

I have syn running on my evo but you can't beat how smooth this is. I had virus rom and carousel was never this smooth. Not putting them down they did awesome porting the 3d/sensation roms. Also this is the best screen I've had on any phone. everything super fast load. No remorse here but I'm also still running rooted 4g.

Thanks Cripple, I had a VW that I thought had the most awesome low end torque and performance, until I drove my friends Porsche. I see your point about the ports running well enough on the 4G, but being supercharged on the 3D.

Umm, yeah, I try nearly every rom that comes around and....umm...not a single 3.0 or 2.1/3.0 hybrid rom I came across would i consider even slightly close to smooth....I typically tune my phone extremely tight....and at first I blamed a lack of an OC kernel...but....even after letting it settle in for a while those roms on a 4G sucked. It was fun being able to play with my next phone--sorta--before I got it...but...not even close. I just couldn't get it to what I considered usable...while I understand that all phones aren't created equally...somehow...I've never had any bad luck at all with my Evo 4G...at all....if all phones aren't created equally (...aside from the physics and practicalities of CPU fabrication the verdict is still out on that one...) my OG Evo would be one of the best, cream of the crop....and those Sense 3.0alike roms were fun, but, the performance blew hard chunks.....I think perhaps "not all people's standards and expectations are created equal" is a more apt assessment of the situation....YMMV

I agree completely. I think people's expectations and interpretations of what 'smooth' and 'usable' is vary greatly. I never had a problem with my OG Evo (launch day evo, still mint condition), but none of the roms are as smooth as this thing is, and this is a stock htc rom! I can't imagine the possibilities that lay ahead with this phone.
Everything on this phone runs as smooth as butter. Multitasking is a dream and everytime i start an app, I cum a little its so fast. Feeling like you can reach into your screen when looking at 3d content annoys the hell out of me cuz i can't... Lol besides the few software quirks that show up here and there this phone is perfection. I am astounded by the difference between this and the 4G.. wow. I have not once felt any remorse.. buy this phone lol

Still the honeymoon. Check back in about 3 weeks when it gets ugly.
I am completely loving the entire experience so far! So smooth... Fast... I love that I can just pinch the browser window and it shows the pages/allows me to close and add more so quickly.
Battery life has been great for me! Sense 3.0 is crazy cool. U even think the vibration feedback feels so much better than the 4G. The 3D gives me a headache, but it is fun to show off. The camera for 2d focuses better... Can actually take a focused picture of my jack russell. The dog was always a blur on the 4G because he never stays still.
No remorse here at all. It's a solid device!

Seems, all the likes for this phone are eye candy, and not actual practicality. Aside from the 3D what can this phone do that the Evo can't with a custom rom? I keep asking myself, what need do I have with a phone that takes 3D movies or pictures, I mean, a cell phone should never be used as your main camera, the quality is never as good as a DSLR, or even a decent point and shoot. So at best the Evo 3D has more gimmicks then the Evo 4G. So I guess the question is, are the gimmicks worth the extra money?
As far as smoothness, maybe, maybe not. The latest Kingdom and Synergy roms run really smooth on the 4G. It may take a second for an app to come up, but I mean, come on, are our lives that fast paced that one second really matters? Man I miss the 80's.
Forget the 3D, it is just sweet novelty to show off and give your enemies headaches... Think dual core, sense 3.0 goodness. It's a great next gen Evo.

[Q] Best thing, Worst thing.

Ok so the Evo3D has been around a few months now. It's had many developments through this great site, tweaks, changed bootloaders, ROMS etc.
But my question to you is this....
In your own personal opinion, what is the worst thing about the Evo3D you own. Also what is the best thing about your phone.
I am curious to see if we get a trending pattern, or if everyones opinions differ drastically.
Best thing.....Evo 3D
Worst thing.....No s-off Hboot 1.49.0011, 0012 and 0013.
Worst..speakers. Best...screen.
Worst: I'd say speaker but really I didn't expect much from it; let's go with shutter lag on camera instead.
Best: The screen; 'cause god damn.
Best- the phone. Worst- it cant cook
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Well for me the best part has gotta be the 3D. Although I don't use it as much as I expected I would, it still impresses anyone who sees it.
The worst would be battery life. Now this is a Android trait so I can't complain too much, but that's all I can think of so far.
Best: Good Screen, Dual core phone...
Worst: the camera button, Speakers and the camera Lense it can break/scratch easily..
Over all I am happy with this device...
I feel like I'm the only one who doesnt complain about speaker volume lol.
Best - Apps like Zumocast or emulators
Worst - Bluetooth stack on sense
best: screen res, 3d, dualcore, sense 3.0, etc.
worst: thickness, speaker, battery life, and fukin m10's
also, it's not an iphone
[/s]
Best - EVO 3D in general i love it.. i dont know why say battery life is bad.. my battery yesterday since 8 o´clock in the morning till 12:30 in the night it was at 35%... thats really good life for a bat.. u should use a DHD and see what a short bat...
Worst - Development and coocking.. GSM have very poor coock yet, if we compare to CDMA!

If you look at total views in Gsm dev thread there must be a lot of lurkers waiting for s-off etc. A lot of Evo 3ds out there on other Hboots that Revolutionary doesnt support.
best thing has to be the cpu and the 3d
worst things are speakervolume and i also hate how hard it is to get your battery out

I'm just following with interest now the Evos threads and think you are right. Everything works fine on the Evo 3d but the Dev future for Gsm looks grim.
Coming from an EVO 4G:
Best thing - extra speed and storage
Worst thing - Hboot 1.5 / no S-OFF & side USB plugin.
Btw, anyone with Hboot 1.5 should seriously check out Flash Image GUI to flash kernels, etc. directly from within Android easily without having to use ADB/command prompt method.

Evo 3D listed on Cyanogenmod device page?

Has anyone else noticed that the Evo 3D is listed on the devices page on cyanogenmod.com? Nothing shows up for experimental or stable mods, but maybe this means that the Evo 3D will be included when CM 7.2 drops?
Currently there is an alpha version of CM7 available for download in the development section of this site and on cyanogenmods wiki page.

True, but up until now the shooter hasn't been listed on the devices page. I mean, I wouldn't get my hopes up, but it would be nice if it was leading up to something.
It's been on the device page for almost a month now. I'm hoping that we'll get nightlies soon, but I'm guessing that CM9 is the first CM that we'll see stable on the Shooter.
This might be a stupid question, but are the WiMax and 3D something that will be easier to deal with in ICS or just about the same as now?

Likely just about the same as now, maybe a bit more difficult on the 3D side.
Read last night that they are skipping to cm9. If you look at their tweets, they say working on ice cream, check back in two months.
I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue!
Cyanogen himself tweeted that there will be a CM7.2. Only god knows if we'll be stable by then.
It really blows that they (CM Team) haven't even bothered to release vendor files for our device. The community could have really helped speed things up. I guess they're just worried about being kanged.
If you ask me, kanging open source is an oxymoron.

Not really... Kanging (to me anyways...), implies you are using someone's code but saying you did it yourself. So, plagiarizing, pretty much. And that's not cool.
However, this is English, and a single word can have many meanings lol.

I can agree with that. What I mean to say is that when you release an open source product (especially an Apache licensed product), and someone uses it in their own derivative, it is NOT stealing. It is infact the spirit of open source.
It's especially offensive since CM itself is a derivative.
Maybe I'm just misunderstanding their POV.
Unfortunately other than Toast, I am not aware of anyone else from cm team even interested in this phone anymore. It's just one phone amongst 10+ powerful phones and its not getting any younger.
I am beginning to wonder if we will ever get bt a2dp, hdmi, etc.

Yeah I guess it is a pretty grey area. Technically, if someone modifies software that was released with under the Apache License, it doesn't have to be released under
those same terms.
I completely agree with you, btw, just offering another point of view.

I doubt there will ever be another 4G. The planets just aligned so well on that release.
I sit here wondering what phone will have good cm support (nexus series?)
If you take a look at github, toastcfh is working on it and I think maybe we might get a working CM7 before we get ICS after all.
I just wants stable CM7 right now, I've been holding off on flashing the alpha releases as it is. As much as I'd love some ICS, a truly stable CM7 build would still be pretty epic IMO.
I tried the alpha a while ago, and it worked really well. I went back to a sense-based ROM because of the car audio issue, though.

I agree with this....I notice a huge difference in in the way the 3d is handled compared to when i used my N1.....I dont consider the 3d a dud though...
I had two Evo 4g's, an htc hero and my wife has an Epic 4g and this phone 3D is far from a dud. It's the best Phone I've owned and the Evo 4g was my baby. I bought one and sold it and bought another and then got the 3d. I don't understand why someone would want Cm7 on the evo 3d. the Gingerbread Ui was ugly. Now ICS variant would be great if only for the UI. That is even tempting me. I used to use CM6&7 on my Evo, but the 3d by itself is far superior, just because of the dual core that makes it a faster evo.

3D incompatibility

Pointless no since ultimately it's the end user that decides whether or not they want to give up the 3D feature for a ROM. There are a couple ROMS that have functioning 3D but sadly to incorporate it into ROMS such as MIUI or CM is quite challenging.
Look at it this way, some people don't mind giving that feature up for something that is far more promising in the long run. Options are always welcomed with these devices.

I don't think it's pointless. The dev's and rom cookers give you the details on what's working and not working in their releases 99% of the time, and a lot of the android enthusiasts (most people on this board), have a reason or another to willingly sacrifice a thing or two. (WiMax for example, since here in AZ we don't have the network capabilities to utilize it.)
Those who are not willing get the choice to avoid it, or test it out and see if they're willing to use it until the author gets a chance to resolve the bugs / known issues. (Assuming they plan to fix it. Some outright state they have no intentions to.)
Well as long 3D movies and 3D recording doesn't work it will not be mine daily driver. But fact is that some off these roms that miss a few features off our phone are really good.
Rom I have now MikRunny 1.11 still has an bug with 3D games, but because there are almost no 3D games is the reason I don't mind that.
I'll kiss 3D goodbye for a cm rom any day. In fact, I only bought this phone for the great hardware. 3D is something I'd show friends, maybe take a bunch of pictures and that's it. It's more a "nice to have" feature than anything I'd really miss.
If I know I need the 3D feature (or MHL, which is more important to me and doesn't work on non-sense roms I've tried [GSM user]), I can still restore a Sense backup

I think it will all change when the evo 3d gets the official ics update
I could care less about the 3D, honestly, its a novelty on the phone at best. When it came out, it had better specs than anything else Sprint was offering, and I was interested in "keeping it in the family" as I came from the EVO 4G.
Gimme a good room with battery life, camera, working 4g, and good sound, and you can burn 3D into the ground.

People who don't have it tend to say that its an gimmick yes. If you don't see it in real its hard to judge.
I also mainly judged on the hardware specifications as the choice for HTC was obvious.
But now I have I can say for sure its not an gimmick its an really usefull feature that is going change my life, because first I could only record in 2D and now I can record in 3D and that is just great, as for later then I can watch these memories back in 3D.
Although I don't have an 3D tv. One thing I know for sure, if I would buy an TV or Monitor and I can get on for not much with 3D then I for sure go for the 3D.
But now I put 3D movies on the Evo 3D and go lie in bed and watch an 3D movie, although it drains the battery, as yesterday after I had it charged 100% not long after that I went watching an 3D movie that was 120 mins long.
My battery drained at time 60% but its worth watching in 3D as its really an nice experience and I'm even more expressed by the 3D video's I can make myself.
I pratice Kung fu and yesterday I asked mine trainer if I could film him doing the first form and I looked it few times back and it looks so great.

For people that want it, but can't go without certain features, just need to get Boot Manager. Get it setup when your running your daily, so goes on phone ROM. Then slide over to other slots & setup ROM you want to try. All you do to flip between is open boot manager, slide to ROM you want to run & hit boot ROM. I usually won't buy apps, only use free ones, unless I WILL use it & really benefit from it like making easier. This was worth it!! Also good to just try out ROMS. See a ROM that looks good but not sure if you like it, & just end up restoring your ROM, or re flash your daily. This it's already setup, & if don't like new ROM just delete it from manage option.

I agree brother!

why is it so hard to get 3d working on jb Roms?

Is it because of missing sources? if yes, which sources? Android? sense? HTC misc?
Just want to know what the problem is!
All Rom devs are doing a great job!

I don't really have an answer for this question, but out of curiosity - how much 3D did people actually use with their phones?
I ask this because I used to put off upgrading from the stock ROM simply because of the lack of 3D support, but what changed my mind was that I realized I almost never used my phone in 3D mode. I couldn't share pics with my friends because none of them had many, if any, 3D capable devices!
Obviously it's not that easy, if it was I would think some developer would have a fix for it long ago, I couldn't careless about 3d anyways, used it maybe twice
( Don't ask me for help as I couldn't care if your phone explodes, eh! )
Good point and there are more useful aspects for 3d like wallpapers and boot animations. As for sources its a HTC and android thing. Unless we can petition HTC and android to release source code there will be no 3d. I can live without it.
There's is a 3d bootanimation that works and also wallpapers, 3d movies suck, games suck, and pictures also suck, 3d is just a passing fad just like bell bottom jeans & hippies, I bought the Evo solely for it's cpu and ram

I use that only when girls are around xD. They are impressed. 3D is for those who don't have others things to impress them xD. Btw it is because of sources

Hahaha yes the 3D is definitely one of the things I use to impress people with my phone. I even convinced one of my colleagues to buy the same phone as mine because he was that impressed
never thought of using my phone that way. so its also a pick-up device or a wing man (phone) lol. damn, a guy will try anything huh?
I think its not a question of "Why should I use 3D? Its an unneeded feature."
My opinion is, that a custom ROM should make use of all features the phone has Besides I know that is very difficult to code it.
So from my understanding it is HTC, not releasing the source of Sense which makes some hardware specific calls (maybe in c language?) to use 3D display and camera. Am I right?
I'll admit I don't use the 3D as much. but since the main reason why my phone has a rectangular "pop-out" is because of the 3D camera, I like to see it.
3D is a nice feature to have, but it's like one of those rare things i use when I'm on vacation or something really cool happens.
Yeah I believe it was sources ARGH D: If only there was a way around
A lot of the ROMS also have 4G not working properly, but most are fixing it i believe.
