[Q] new to android (help) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi im new to android phones
last week i got galaxy s2
now i found some great apps byt when i downloaded them i didnt found .apk app
instead i found few folders and files and i dont know how to instal them
should i root my galaxy?

Form where did you download them.. try using market app or download from apktop.com or android-market.co .. Also do you have System/app/ and META-INF folders in a zip file. If so you will have to install it in recovery by using install zip from sdcard option..

what app are you referring to?
if its a flash zip you need a custom recovery such as CWM or Amon Ra

there is no specific app ( i downloaded many app that was non an .apk)
yes its a flash zip
cmw comes after rooting?
thanks for your patience but im new to the world of android

So, flash cwm recovery and try to install from there.. if you flash cwm recovery you can even backup and restore your rom...

you need to root first before you can install a custom recovery.
usually system apps get install via flash zip. you sure the apk is not zipped up? sometimes you need to in zip to get the apk.

thank you all for your replies
the apps im talking about like app monster or other app that need a root
is there a safe way to root the galaxy s2 without changing the rom or the kernel
ie. i just want to be able to flash zip files ( cracked app)
and stay on my rom and kernel
and will i be able to receive apdates for the kies???

TO root s2 please visit this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Sometime there will be .apk file directly inside zip file (this is done to reduce size of app) you should not try to install them from recovery only install zip file from recovery having sytem and Meta-inf folder inside the zip file.
Yes you will be able to receive updates via kies unless you don't flash a custom kernel...

thank you all

Hi! I just got my first Android Phone.
The HTC Inspire.
I've been told I could speed up this phone but I'm also curious to know what else I could do with it?
I used to have an iPhone and I would just change the theme and stuff...
So, I suppose my question(s) is/are;
1. How can I speed up my phone?
2. What can I do with my phone?
3. Is there a site where I can browse custom themes for my phone?
4. how do I add custom ringtones/ringback
thanks for taking the time for reading this.

To speed up your phone try v6 supercharger. Search xda forum and you will get there ..
You can do a lot of things with your phone like rooting it to make changes to system as well a ls access hidden system files and also to install app like app monster, titanium backup that are very handy ..
Not only this you can even flash/install custom Rom/kernel that are much better and optimized than stock one provided by HTC..
For more details Google root your phone model and custom kernels for your phone model ..
To get themes and more info foe your phone try to find your phone sub forum in xda forum or just Google .. to set custom ringtones you can select set as ringtone on your music player it copy ogg file to /system/media/audio (for which you need to root and use root explorer or similar app) and then go to settings.and choose your copies file..

What is App Monster? "flash/install custom Rom/kernel" ??
I'll try and find my phone in the sub-fourms

App Monster is an application that lets you manage your installed applications. For example you can backup apps and batch restore them.

X10 Custom ROM AOSP 2.1 : How to for dummies [tutorial & discussion]

this thread is open to help newbies to install the 2.1 custom rom with the simples way..
you also can discuss any problem here..
dont mess the dev thread with a dumb question...
thanks to "Perceval from Hyrule" for the original tutorial..
this is revise version for 2.1
INSTALLATION FOR 2.1 AOSP
Before attempting anything, make sure you have AT LEAST 50% of battery charge. Don't try anything with low battery, you can abort the flashing and brick your device !!!
Please make sure you're also running a 2.1 rom (Generic, nordic, official, custom...)
1st step:
make sure your computer is adb debugging ready..
in case in need for command execution..
- Download Android SDK
You don't need to save the entire archive (but you can), you just need the Tools folder (because it contains ADB, the Android Debug Bridge we need to install files).
2nd step:
- On x10 :
Enable USB debugging (Setting > Applications > Development).
Root your device. easiest way by using z4root.
Download and install Busybox (from Market), make sure it says "Done!".
3rd step:
install xrecovery for recovery menu.
xrecovery a.k.a recovery menu
4th step:
option 1:
Download rom.
2.1 AOSP ROM (make sure 2.1 since this tutorial is for 2.1)
extract the rom (u will get 2 folder + 1 files)
upload the file into your sd card root(sdcard/*.zip)
rename the *.ZIP to Update.ZIP
*the 2 folder contain application which u can install if u like
option 2:
Download rom.
2.1 AOSP ROM (make sure 2.1 since this tutorial is for 2.1)
extract the rom (u will get 2 folder + 1 files)
upload the file into your sd card root(sdcard/*.zip) or in any folder u like
*the 2 folder contain application which u can install if u like
5th step:
boot into recovery menu (by restart and hit few times back button when "SONY ERICSSON" word appear)
backup your original rom(in case u want to restore next time)
hit full wipe
option 1:
hit install update.zip from SD card
option 2:
hit install custom zip
search for the custom zip in folder where u save it
hit the zip file
after reboot, u will get custom rom installed in your X10
good luck ;-)
TIPS
1-u can do like rendeiro2005 said by creating rom folder and put the rom collection in it..
so if u want to change or try other rom just choose zip file from the particular folder...
this require using step from option 2
2-another one, by creating folder which contain backup image..
u can collect your friends backup image and put in one folder..
if u want to try, just restore the particular image file using backup/restore option in recovery menu and choose the backup image file..
collection of custom rom backup file for recovery menu:

for use with recovery menu only..
Hi bro,
Only two calls on your excellent tutorial:
1. No need to put the rom in the root of the sdcard. I, for example, to distinguish the roms, I`ve created a folder "Rom" in the root and put the roms in there.
2. It is not necessary to rename the *. zip file.
When we entered the xRecovery, you can go to "install Custom Zip> zip Choose Custom from sdcard>" Now in my case I a. .. "Roms >........" and I intend to choose

it`s not a different way.
i think that way would be more simple (for me at least) `couse you can have different roms puted on the same directory without, everytime that you want to install one change his name to default.zip
but...great TUT (clap your hands floks)
Since i haved installed the 2.1 AOSP, my recovery were deleted !
So i install the xrecovery.apk but it doesnt work (don't fin the SD Card), so i paste the 3 files with root explorer but nothing to do... the recovery doesn't work at all =(

Install all 3?! Yes you can...if you want you can install WM and iOS
Now mre seriously.
If you want to install 2.1 you have to format sdcard to one partition only. 2.1 doesn't work with more than 1.
Then you can flash...follow this guide to do so

From rommanager flash clock work recovery then boot into recovery and find the zip and flash

Yes rename the zip file to update.zip but that should have already been done when you rooted your phone.
^ no. you never rename a rom.
Flash cwr
Reboot into cwr
Install zip from sd
Check out the noob guide (signature) for much more detail and steps.
You can do it from rom manager, but cwr still needs to be flashed.

[ULTIMAROM] Reflashing some apps

Sorry for posting here, I do not have access to the development forum and cannot post my question in the UltimaROM thread so here goes.
I have flashed Ultima on my phone and it is a great Rom. However, I have flashed the Nexus 4's camera app and would like to reflash the original samsung camera app. Is there a way to do that while leaving everything else on my phone intact?

I have also flashed the n4 camera but it installed as a separate file. Anyway here is the SamsungCamera.apk:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/qam7q2or6i5b6pi/SamsungCamera.apk
Copy it to /system/app with any root file explorer and change its permissions (use this guide if you need help - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1857648)
edit: You can extract and install most of the apps from the .zip file of the ROM if you need to.

Thanks for your response,
I have copied the filed and fixed permissions and rebooted the phone but I still can't see it in the menu or in the app manager. The camera app is still the nexus one
If you are using Ultima, then you should have the ultima OTA app installed in your phone. open it and browse the Download section, there should be a zip for the Camera AROMA installer.
Download the zip, it should be inside either the internal SD or external SD if you have one mounted. folder name should be UltimaROM. Flash it in CWM and it should give you an option to choose between the stock SGS3 camera and the 4.2 one.

[Q] I did something really stupid.

So, I have a blu dash 4.0 [you most likely never heard of this phone]
I was following a guide online, which I was trying to change my contacts and replace it with a stock app.
It told me to delete my existing one, I did.
I tried to install the .apk file for the stock one. but gave me this error.
[picture is below]
I tried a different website which was a thread in this forum.
same error.
so any help?
try this
This doesnt concern about wc type of phone it is.......i have been in situations like these alot when i was all new to custom roms ,
but here is what i always did and it always worked,
---------------------------IF U ARE USING A CUSTOM ROM------------------------------------
Now if u have a recovery installed ,
flash into recovery and back up that current rom u are using { antivirus has to be unistalled at first }
after that, get the zip of the same rom u had installed on phone and flash it again into phone
do whats necessary and after the reboot is done , get a file manager like { OI FILE MANAGER }
and go to the system folder were the contacts apk is....
copy the contacts apk and paste it somewere on the sd card,
after reboot into recovery and restore the back up you made,
after all is done and the phone is fully on , go to that apk you copied and click on it for installation...
whoo..
now u shud have { link to sd app }, open it , make that apk a system app and you are done.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If this is long for you , flash the same rom again in phone.....and if you dont have a custom rom , same
thing works
reply
Thanks for replying, but I don't have an SD card at the moment.
my SD Card slot is broken. [bad timing ]
I'm not using a custom ROM.
I can't have one anyway, my phone is really undiscovered.
is there a different way to do this?
