[Q] Superuser not working after CF root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long time listener; first time caller.
Short version:
I rooted my SGSII with CF root. Everything seemed fine, but now any app that needs superuser permission says 'Superuser has stopped unexpectedly.' How can I fix it? Can I uninstall and reinstall Superuser?
Long version:
I loved the first galaxy. Then I moved to China. Really missing everything American, so I saved and bought an SGSII in China. Surprised to find no Android Market. Apparently Google and China don't like each other? My phone came with Superuser and Titanium Backup...I don't know what that means; I'm inexperienced at rooting. Used the wonderful instructions in the forums (genuinely appreciative; not sarcastic) to CF root my phone. Went smoothly; now I also have CWM app. But if I try to run CWM or Titanium Backup or anything else that requires Superuser permission, I get a vibrate then a double vibrate and a message that says 'superuser has stopped unexpectedly.' Superuser icon is still there; if I open it, it lists the one program I granted Superuser access to before rooting my phone (Market Enabler). Perhaps the problem is that a second Superuser was added over the first? How can I make Superuser work again? Sidenote, how can I install Android Market now?
I'm a new poster and can't post to development threads. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Thank you JJEgan for your reply! I have tried re-rooting it again, but I'm still having the same difficulty. If I try to open something that requires Superuser permission, I receive the message 'Superuser has stopped unexpectedly.' Also, when I open Superuser or try to search for an update, I get 'Checking available version failed.'
Can I fix this by removing superuser altogether, then flashing again to get the unbroken one back? If so, how can I remove Superuser? Can't seem to find an uninstall button....hahahahaha.
Again, thanks for any helpful ideas anyone has!

Needs to be removed from /system/app, which only a root user can do...
Perhaps you can go to settings, applications, manage apps, show all, clear for superuser, and this might stop it from crashing.

Again, Tonymy01, I greatly appreciate your reply! I have cleared the superuser data, but that didn't help. I also tried resetting to factory then rooting with cf again, but still I have no joy.
Would installing a new version of superuser over the old version solve my problem? Ugh.
A preemptive thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.

i dont know if this would help but try getting superuser from the market and see if that works?

What is going on with Superuser?

What is up with the last superuser update? it is fc on every app that wants root access, i have cleared data, i have deleted and re-installed it and other apps. Anybody have a download with a older version of it? It has been like this for a few days now and there is still no new update on the market.
I deleted the update. It gave me a number of FCs when I loaded Liquid 2.0. I can not answer directly what is wrong with it.

ROOT Weirdness

Hi all; I just got a Galaxy Note and successfully installed CWM and rooted using DA_G Odin PDA method.
Could anyone help me with the following please?
1. Superuser app looks funny on screen, like its not formatted correctly some screen layers are on top of others... it looks messed up lol. It does actually work though(grants or denies root access).
2. Titanium Backup is complaining about my root access and how SU is not working correctly. Though if I grant it root access it does actually work correctly.
This seems to have started after a factory reset.

1) It always looks like this, has nothing to do with a factory reset. Install Super SU from the market if you don't like the look of Superuser.
2) Yes, this is how it works. Titanium Backup requires root to run. So that makes sense that it works correctly when you grant it root. So I am not sure I get the question.

Point 1- Yes did that, DA_G root method does not come with the superuser app. The superuser app literally looks messed up... from your reply your implying that's normal(or not)?
Point 2- When I start Titanium backup, it complains that my SU is messed up. If this is normal behavior for the Note, so be it, just checking
Moderators- I apologize if this thread does not belong in the general section, I would appreciate if it can be moved, if needed, thanks
When asking for SU acces at TB screen is the "remember" checked off? If it isnt thats why its always asking you. I had an issue like you and a simple reboot remedied it. If that doesnt help, remove and reinstall both apps from market again. Reboot and see if that fixes it.
The SU app does look weird on our phablets. But it works as expected.

[Q] Some question about my Galaxy s2 phone

Hello Professionals,
I have a question please. I rooted my phone using Rachmat3's guide [GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
I rooted it successfully but sometimes whenever i play some games (Asphalt 6 Adrenaline an example), this notification "shell has been granted super user permission" appears continuously for around 5 mins and when i check the superuser log, it allowed "shell" for more than a hundred times and i couldnt still open the game.
Here is my phone information.
Model number : GT-I9100
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband version I9100XXLPX
Kernel version : [email protected] #3
What could be the reason of this? Any advice? Thank you.

it seems.... probably asphalt is infected with virus...
No, it's not a virus
It's an issue with SuperUser (specifics/details if you want to get technical can be found here somewhere if you do an XDA search). The easiest method to fix the issue without stuffing around is to install SuperSu from Google Play, update the binary on that app, then uninstall SuperUser & reboot.
That should solve the problem.
P.S - You could have found this solution by searching, this has been covered here more times than I've had hot dinners.
P.P.S - If the problem persists once you've done that (unlikely but possible), contact the developers of the apps in question. Clearly those apps are asking for root over & over (looping) when they shouldn't be.

Ok, i will try but i want to ask some more question for clarification.
1. I will install SuperSU as normal apk file?after that..
2. how do i remove my current superuser? i installed it using update from internal sd using recovery mode.
Thanks..
1. Go to Google Play (on your phone obviously; unless you want to do it from your PC & push it to your phone, which is a pain in the arse), search for SuperSu (free version) & install it like you would any other app from Google Play Re-read what I said to do after you install it, I'm not repeating it.
2. Settings/Apps/All - Uninstall SuperUser. Reboot.

You can download Rom toolbox from the market and use it to uninstall SuperUser. now your root access will be from SuperSU.

[Q] Daxian TD888 MTK6589 ROM help?

I'm in need of some kinda urgent help and advice regarding a phone i have just purchased for my mother.
I've bought her a cheap Daxian TD888 on the MTK6589 chipset and i'm afraid i have been a silly boy and not done my research before purchasing - I was under the impression that it came with the Play Store installed etc and sadly, it comes with a hard to use chinese ROM.
Mothers being mothers, mine isn't anywhere near tech/phone friendly and this is her first smartphone (upgrade from a 6 year old Nokia/symbian brick) so i was wanting to get her onto a nice and simple stock android 4.1 or 4.2 or even a CMxx that i can just help her along with.
After some very panic based searching today, i'm not seeing much that can help me... infact... nothing regarding this phone at all.
So... have I been a dumbass and bought her a lemon or is there anyone that can help me out with advice or pointers on how to get a normal android ROM on this thing?
I'm not massively experienced with rooting but have managed it a couple fo times in the past on my old Nexus One.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I could probably help you get it rooted and that would allow you to install Play store on it as well as delete any chinese apps that sometimes come on the MT65XX devices if interested. As far as the rom goes, is there not an option in settings to change language to English? I have bought a few MediaTek devices directly from china, when I received the phone it had english on it already but when I reset the phones I would have to go into Settings and change chinese language back to english.
Motochopper should root your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252248
One thing with these phones is that the android version is not always what is shown in Settings > About phone. Try using this tool from the first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2160490&styleid=18
make sure you enable USB debugging on your phone first and it will help tell which version of android you are really running. If kernel say 2.6.xx you are on GB 2.3, if it is 3.0.xx then you are on ICS and if it says 3.4.xx then you are JB. I bought a MT6575 that said android version 4.0 in settings, it said gingerbread 2.2 on the box (I know 2.2 is Froyo), then on bottom of box it said Froyo 2.2!
Thanks Klown80 -
I'm just into work now so I'll have to hook it up to my own PC and root when i get home later... i'm just in full on panic mode over this (its a time sensitive issue as she's due to be in hospital for an extended period and i want to get this right for her before then)
Regarding the language settings in the current/stock rom, it has english US selected and while a lot of the language is in english, pretty much ALL popup dialogs are in chinese and the browser is unusable (all chinese text based) so... hence the panic.
I was (foolishly) thinking it would just be a simple enough flash to CM or stock android and hey presto - full english ROM.
I hate it when i don't do my homework first.
So... you recommend the root first, check exact android version number and go from there?
Even if it turns out to be an older 2.1/2.2/whatever version, i'd be happy enough to get something stock and full english based on there if its possible.
As she's never had a smart phone, it will all seem super smooth and flashy to her anyway.
I have now rooted (i think..) however, the superuser app comes up with an error upon opening -
superuser binary (su) must be updated
and i now i'm kinda stuck.
I have downloaded and tired various versions of the play store and while the at first allow me to enter google accounts details, it always crashes after that.
Every time i open the play store app, it just closes again.
Any suggestions on where i might be going wrong?

Sounds like you need to update the binary then, if it allows you. If not then the root did not correctly root your device and we will have to go back a step and get that fixed first. As for Play Store, it usually takes more than just the Play.apk file to put Play Store on your device if it did not come with it stock. You also need (I am going off top of my head, I can give you exact names later) Google services framework.apk, Google login services.apk, Google Play services.apk. You need to have root to to this because you will need to move the vending.apk to /system folder and possibly change permissions on the apk before you install it. Once we can confirm root I can help you install a working Play Store if you like.

I've no idea how to update the binary so I guess i'm looking at a re-root.
I have had the usual issues of drivers not wanting to work (the Motochopper root process getting stuck at the daemon starting point) but I've manged to get the process to work twice so far.
(I've tried 4 different driver packages and they have all given the same results)
Could you possibly advise on how to update the binary file for superuser? I've just tried the root again and it skipped installing superuser as it was already found on the phone.. i haven't felt this noobllike in some time!

Try uninstalliong Superuser or SuperSU and try again. Su binary should ask you if you want to update when you first open SuperSU, if you have Superuser, then you will need to open the app and go into settings to update binary.

Ok, is it just Superuser and not SuperSU correct? Can you go into settings in Superuser and towards the bottom there should be an option to update su binary. If it is SuperSU it will ask to update on its own when you open it. either way make sure it lets you update binary. Once binary is updated download and install any app that asks for root acces, so we can see if superuser request pops up.
Once we have confirmed root we can move onto installing Play Store. To do this you will need to be able to install a file explorer like ES file explorer so we can install the files we need for working Play Store.

In the superuser settings, there isn't anything apparent for trying to update the su binary.
the list reads as follows:
Security

Log (on)
Notifications (on)
Backup apps/preferences

HUGE thanks to Klown80 for the advice and patience!
For anyone else in a similar situation with an MTK6589 cheapo phone, and had issues with the Motochopper root method (the root getting stuck at 'daemon started successfully' etc etc.....
Klown80's chinese root tool works a treat. You will have a chinese superuser app that may be a little annoying (you might be able to swap it for SuperSU or something but I had issues doing that so i've kept the chinese one) but the root works perfectly and the instructions given by Klown80 in the linked thread are very easy to follow.
I still had some issues with getting google services installed so you may want to look for a play store installer workaround - I know there is a cheeky little chinese mod apk that can be used to get the play store working, but i can't post it here.
Should anyone come across this thread and know of a good, stock english rom that I might be able to use, please leave a comment!

[Q] CleanMaster Root Access Failed

I have already given root access to the app Clean Master. Under the 'Autostart Manager' page, I tried to remove apps that autostart by itself. However, the app pop out a message indicating 'Failed to Grant Root' and reminded me to grant root access.
I went back to the superuser app, it was indicated that root access has been granted.
Any way to solve this problem?
I have been having this same issue on rooted stock gs4. It's temperamental when it comes to root I've noticed. One day I was able to turn it app off of auto start and when I installed a new app it wouldn't let me do it and su says I'm granted
I'm experiencing the same issues. Auto Start Manager is the only feature that has this issue.

I always face this issue also, what I do as a temporary fix is, go to the SuperSU app, then "Forget" Clean Master, open Clean Master and try to disable an app from Auto starting, grant root and the app will be disabled I hope it works for you too
I am glad I am not the only one having this issue. I recently updated an app via the play store and clean master told me it was auto starting. I tried to block it, but it keeps telling me root access failed and to grant it. Well I've granted it root 18 times now and it still says root failed. I have tried everything to get it to work...clear logs, tell superSU to forget clean master, give it global default, etc. Nothing seems to work and it's pissing me off.
Unfortunately this does not work for me.
I have granted root access according to SuperSU Pro however when trying to stop autostarting apps in Clean Master it reminds me to allow access.
I even get a popup massage from SU stating that the app got granted root access.
Whats happening here? Does anyone have a work around?
Deleting Cleanmaster in SuperSU doesnt help. It is always the same unfortunately.
Best Regards
J
I too also have problems with the autostart function in Clean Master on my Optimus Zone II
First of all, if you've root then you shouldn't use clean master. That's so naive.
About the permissions. Even after root your system partition stays in read only mode. I'm guessing this okay. You should check that out first.

Ok, (I know Im gunna reget this), but why?, in your option, should Clean Master NOT be used, since it need so many "root" functions in order to work? Ive used it for years. Rooted or no, (mostly rooted), and why do all the "autostart" apks, (ROM Toolbox, Autostarts, Autostart Manager, etc) work just fine. I've tryied it with r-w on system on, sooooo....next...?

I can't argue over this. Best options for you 1. Root Cleaner (high priority) 2. SD Maid Pro (medium priority)
See the difference yourself.
fix?
Has anyone figured out what the issue is here? It worked just fine on cm12 but stock Lilli nope. Root issues for sure it must have something to do with system partition. Has anyone fixed this issue?

Clean master is not working on 2.46(I mean the autostart manager) I noticed this yesterday..i flashed a new Rom first it was having Supersu 2.46 version in which CM was not working but after flashing Supersu 2.49 CM is working plus in Google store supersu 2.46 beta is there which won't work...my clean master started working again normally like before after installing SuperSU 2.49...so try flashing or installing supersu 2.49

I just rooted my s6 edge and was having the same issue with 2.46. Luckily when I updated to 2.49, I was unable to block the autostartup apps.
