[krn.module] Disable wifi power saving for Dell Streak 360 stock ROM - Streak 5 Android Development

This wifi driver kernel module "disables" the wifi maximum power management during screen off. The level 2 driver adds it further, changing power saving to off, while on battery power. Hopefully it could increase the wireless strength -- I am testing it.
DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any damage caused by the updated kernel module, neither its compatibility. I don't think it would work for any other ROM other than stock 360. Also, make sure you had the bcm4325 wifi instead of bcm4329.
Use at your own risk, always do nandroid backups
To update, either use ClockworkMod or StreakMod recovery, and use any of the attached zip file as update.zip.
Alternatively, you can just replace the /system/lib/modules/dhd.ko and reboot the system.
PS: Thanks to Myshkinbob's hint on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752856

WOW , while i was playing with the cifs another wonder came, i do confirm the cifs module works perfect [on 360], am on the process of testing these modules too, streak-custom-ROM-cooks i appeal you to include these modules in your 2.2 based ROMs.
Thank you again !!!

Wifi streaming is now working flawlessly with screen turned off. The no power saving configuration on battery doesn't seems to improve the signal much. But it doesn't seems to have any significant increase on battery usage, so I suggest to just go for the level 2 version.

Gonna ask the obvious before someone else does
setting wifi sleep to 'never' doesnt accomplish what you want? What happens exactly if you set it to 'never' without loading your module? Is it as described in your link where it goes down to ~100kb/s link speed?
Wonder if porting to another kernel is as simple as using it's matching config.gz like with tun.ko or cifs.ko(?)

No it doesn't -- it is unrelated, actually. The bandwidh limit imposed by maximum power saving is much less than the required bandwidh for streaming FLAC audio. The result is intermittent audio playback with repeating 2-5 seconds silence and audio pattern.
Not to mention that I occasionally experiences IM+ Google Talk, YM, and Jabber session disconnects due to the same problem

Whoops sorry double posted

Any chance of building one of these for 2.3?

I use Advanced WiFi lock from market. It,s Free and work just fine.

I haven't personally tried Gingerbread on my Streak. Probably will never do so due to reasons I won't post here.
But I could probably try building them, although I'll need your help on a couple of info needed.

I believe an app could also prevent wifi to enter max power saving mode on screen off. But to make sure it does, then you have to try streaming some lossless audio with it

I'd be willing to help, but have decided to forego gingerbread for now. One too many random reboots. However I'll help you out as much as I can for the good of the masses.

As you're not currently running 2.3 then I assume you're not in hurry for this. We can schedule it later then
Anyway I don't think many people needs this tweak, so let's just take it easy. Just post back when you're ready with a Streak running 2.3.
Sorry but I should've been able to do this by myself if I had 2.3 installed on my phone. But as stated, I don't have any plan for that

I'm back on the gingerbread bandwagon, however I am having wifi issues and I wonder if your fix can help. Randomly, but quite regularly, the wifi still shows as connected, however there is no data throughput. I'm wondering if it possible that the wifi "power down" is going to low and then not powering back up when the screen comes back on. Would your fix help with that at all? If so, I'm ready to help with it for gingerbread.

can u make one for 354? thanks

can anyone provide me with wifi drivers for 2.3? i have had no wifi for around 6 months and cant bear it no more!
i get a wifi drivers not loaded on the logcat, have tried everything i can manage in my limited adb capabilities, dont think its a hardware issue but want to try something/anything before selling my streak! changing roms, wiping and factory resets have not worked.
anyone??!!

i tried.but it disabled my wifi

Raz-or,have you tried putting the 360 update.pkg on your root sd card, then run your phone through the qdl tool......after that....start your phone up in stock recovery, and it will install the 360 you put on sd,then upon reboot go back into stock recovery and do a factory reset......after your up and running, wifi should be working now.after doing this....you could put streakmod recovery on....so you can go back in and do a nandroid backup, and be able to do other things it can do

Veoh.com question

Hey guys first time poster long time reader. Before I begin I just wanted to thank you all for the help and support with the ins and outs of the android OS.
Now that that is out of the way, I had a question in regards to Veoh.com and some issues I am having with it. I have Kaos Froyo v39, and I use Dolphin browser mini. When I change my useragent to iPhone and I go on Veoh it works okay for a little bit, and then it either stops loading videos or gives me an error message saying 'this video cannot be played' is there a fix for this? Am I doing something wrong?

Hi! Welcome. Is this over 3G or Wifi, or have you tried both?
Either way, this is safe to try: Download "APN OnOff" from the market. Launch it and choose "Show APN list" in the middle of the screen. Press Menu and choose "Reset to default". You may or may not need to perform a reboot to see if this helps. Try it without first.
This used to help me with restoring tethering when it stopped working.
A longer method to possibly achieve the same thing, but may be worth a try if the first method doesn't work:
Perform a nandroid and flash a stock-like ROM such as xtrSENSE (what I would recommend). You only have to use it long enough to download "APN Backup & Restore" off the market. Run it and choose "Backup APNs", you can name it whatever makes sense to you such as "xtrSENSE stock APN.xml", otherwise it just uses the current date and time.
Nandroid back to KaosFroyo and install "APN Backup & Restore" again. This time choose "Restore APNs" and restore the one you backed up from xtrSENSE. Again try it without a reboot first but if it doesn't work try a reboot.
You can do this as often as you like to see if this helps with any data trouble. I'm not positive if it helps with WIFI at all; I know it helps with 3G Data.
Please let us know if any of this helps or not.
Thank you so much, its working now. Only issue now is that the bar in the program is stuck in the off position, and when I click on it to turn it back on it just goes into the settings. My connections are still fine as you can see, should I be worried?
On an unrelated note, which tethering Rom did you use? I would love to tether my phone, but the threads I have read make it seem like a daunting process to me.

Bar in which program? APN OnOff? As long as everything's working I wouldn't worry about it since I don't use that button; I think I've noticed that before. A reboot would probably restore it, in my experience.
I've tethered under every ROM but any GingerBread one, now. Started with xtrsense, found that it was marginally more reliable under Froyo so GB would probably be good too. What was better about 2.2+ tethering was how fast the tethering connection would be made, before it took a minute or two for the computer to recognize it; now down to less than 30 seconds.
I don't recommend the old wired or wireless tether for root under 2.2+, but I haven't tried them in a while. 2.2+ and CM6+ have their own native tethering. CM6.1's notification power widgets have a WIFI tether one which connects the fastest. Free Tethering Widget off the market will also give you a widget for that and/or USB tethering, which is built into 2.2+ itself but for some reason CM doesn't include a notification power widget for.
Wireless tethering eats your battery like crazy plus made the phone extra hot, but you have to understand that it was my only home internet until a month ago since last August. I kept the battery cover off and had a fan on it, but you don't have to do that for just occasional tethering. I also had it plugged in to charge constantly; I just liked how fast wireless connected.
Wired tethering also uses battery faster and makes it warmer, just not nearly as fast or warm as wireless.
Occasionally 3G would stop and I'd have to turn off tethering and do the steps in my other post to get it going again. Most of the time a reboot after doing APN OnOff made tethering last longer.
If you know how to install drivers with Device Manager (assuming you're on Windows), or you don't mind learning I would get the latest drivers from http://htc.developers.comhttp://developer.htc.com/ if I remember correctly.
I'm on my phone at the moment, I'll check later. The driver package is all the way at the bottom of the list, the last one.
Otherwise just install HTCSync for the Eris and that'll install older drivers.

Okay so let me get this straight... I have tethering on my Froyo 2.2 already and I just need to grab a widget in order to activate it? What is the driver for? I was under the assumption that my phone would become a "hotspot" so I could set it up to an Xbox PS3 etc. Do I need to download the driver in order to tether to the computer? If so, how would I be able to use a wired tether to something like a PS3? I am a pretty quick learner on the whole concept of rooting and flashing Roms, but I am a newb so I appreciate your time and patience.

If you're running a recent enough version of a ROM based on CM6.x (6.1 or 6.2?), then if you enable the tethering widget in the notification menu power buttons (the buttons at the top), then you'd don't need anything else to WIFI tether.
You can do USB tethering by going into the stock settings, but it's such a PITA to do it there it's easier to do it by using that widget I mentioned, which also handles Froyo's WIFI tethering as well. So if you're never going to do USB tethering, you don't need any other drivers (called RDNIS drivers) and you don't need that widget off the market.
If you do ever plan on wire tether, then you will need to install some RDNIS drivers (the link I gave you) unless you've already installed HTCSync, since that includes both the regular and the RDNIS drivers. I have no idea if you can wire tether to a PS3 since in Windows you need to install a driver, but you can try it and let us know, or search for other people who wanted to do the same thing. You should be able to WIFI tether, however.
No problem, I'm glad you pick things up quickly, makes it that much easier. And you're welcome!
So help me - what bar in the program were you talking about?
On APN on /off, when I reset the settings I saw a bar on the main screen highlighted on. I turned it off thinking I should rest it. I couldn't toggle it back on, bit data was still working and I did a reboot just in case. It was nothing major thankfully.

You were correct in your end assessment that it shouldn't be anything to worry about, that APN switch in the middle of the screen. I've had mixed results with it in my observations, so I don't even touch it although as you noticed it doesn't seem to hurt anything.
Thanks for verifying; that was the only thing I could imagine you might be talking about!

Automatic WiFi/3G data connection switching on 2.2 ROMs

While I was running the Stock SE 2.1 .435 release (rooted of course) my X10 was capable of automatically switching between the GSM data connection to any of my configured Wifi networks (at work and at home) without any user interaction.
I have a friend with a Motorola Milestone on 2.1 with this same behaviour.
Every 2.2 ROM I have loaded seems to have a problem with regards to this feature. Basically I have to perform a manual switch but here are two of the behaviours I have noticed.
On FreeX10 the SSID basically becomes disabled. If I am at home and connected to my home network and leave the cell area my 3G network becomes established and everything is fine. Once I get back home within the cell area of my WiFi network the WiFi connection does not become active. Instead I have to go into Wireless Settings and that's when I see it is disabled. Long press the SSID and choosing Connect gets me connected.
On [Cyanogen6.1.3]gingerbread[v01] the SSID does not get disabled but rather it continuously fails. Same use case as above except when I go into Wireless Settings I see the SSID "Connecting" and then failing and entering the "Remembered" state.
My friend with the Milestone recently upgraded to 2.2 and will test this scenario to see if it is inherent to 2.2.
My question is, would it be possible to take the 2.1 Wifi component and use that in the 2.2 ROMs?
It would be great this could get fixed, same problem is with the gingerbread roms.
Like u said, it doesn't even help when switching WiFi off/on again using my WiFi widget. U have to manually press connect on your specific WiFi connection.
Pain in the ass!
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I have the same problems, tried both roms and ended up sticking with Cyanogen, simply because it was less of a pain re wifi but i still have reconnection problems when leaving my house. The answer is to manually turn off wifi then leave, then reengage wifi manually when i return. A pain but, a small one
Agreed. Toggling the power does not help.
If it is possible to take the WiFi component (for lack of a better word) from another build I strongly suggest considering .435 because it worked phenominally under various conditions.
yea my wifi doesn't seem to work well either with the FreeX10 rom
I assume you already tried Blade Wifi Fix? If not, do so.
The Blade fix was included in the CM ROM I installed. It looks like all it did was power cycle the wifi which as already stated doesn't help.

hi,
after reading this i though ...
me and wolf include blade wifi on our roms.
for me i don`t have any issue regarding wifi on my rom. i get out of home with wifi connected do a 1 hour trip to my work and when i get there wifi pick signal without any issue.
but......
i don`t check right away, so.
like i said me and wolf we include blade wifi and do some changes regarding build.prop to save some battery. one of the most consumer of battery is the wifi.
on SE roms search for wifi every 15 seconds. on mine i change that to 380 sec and wolf around 200 (i think) so...could this be the cause of ????
i personally don`t believe removing blade will do any difference but...maybe those who had this issues try to change build.prop to 15sec ?
well we might be onto something...after installing Blade I was able to switch but I did not time it...seems to have taken quite some time though. I'll time it next time but I'm sure since it will vary because it looks like it runs a timer and I don't know what the details are.
I wonder if Z made the same changes to build.prop as you guys have. I would be interested in testing without this change.
Also, it would be great to know what Blade actually does. I wonder if it circumvents the changes you made to the intervals in build.prop.
Also, any idea as to whether we can use the WiFi component from the .435 build in these ROMs?
Ren,
Is it possible to go in and change the value in build.prop:
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=
Without reloading the ROM?

Yes.
Through root explorer. Just make sure you check all boxes on permitions and after that reboot.

OK. I've been watching what Blade does and all it seems to do is reinitialize the wifi. Seems overkill so I found this:

I want to write an app that will monitor configured networks and set their status to Enabled.
The challenge for me is that I've never developed an app before but I have the SDK installed and it recognized my x10 so I'm good to go. Ill try to get as far as I can but I will need some help. Is there anyone interested in offering themselves as a resource if/when I need some help?

Froyo WPA2-Enterprise Wifi Issues

Ever since upgrading to 2.2 I have lost the ability to connect to my schools WPA2-Enterprise network. I've searched and found that this was an issue introduced in 2.2 (I could connect fine on 2.1) and has been fixed in 2.3. I've tried all the solutions I've found online and zero have worked. These include using apps from the market such as Wifi Advanced Configuring and replacing the wpa_supplicant file in /system/bin/ with the version from 2.1
The werid thing is, after completely wiping and flashing a new rom, it will connect fine the first time but not after that so im thinking it has something to do with certificate/credential storage?
The network I'm trying to connect to is WPA2-Enterprise, authenticated via PEAP and MSCHAPV2
Can anyone point me in the right direction? What system files might affect this? Can I try replacing them from a 2.3 build?
Any ideas/input would be appreciated
Ummm.....I connect the same exact way with the same exact settings at my job and I haven't experinced any issues while running 2.2. Which rom are you using?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Its happend on all of the 2.2 roms I've tried, (AOSP, MIUI, CM6, TW).
I've had the same issue. The odd thing is that some days I actually get it to link up on the first try to the same router, but other days I do all the various steps that you can find while googling for answers and never get to successfully connect.
Almost makes going back to 2.1 seem worthwhile...
Flashed a new rom today and connected to the network fine first try like usual. Cycled wifi and it wont connect again.
Anyone know where it stores wifi credentials? I'm thinking if I can clear them each time I want to connect it should work...
I'm in the same boat...although, my thread is on the second page with no replies. I am also unable to connect to enterprise wifi on campus...drives me nuts. I've spent countless hours trying to figure this out. I had no problems with enterprise wifi on 2.1...I wonder which file I could flash from 2.1 to make it work, I'm sure someone knows.

Are you saying my school restricts Android 2.2 users from using thier wifi while allowing 2.1 users to use it? I'm not sure what you mean...
Im saying maybe they needed more bandwidth so they put a block/allow list on their wifi. Nothing to do with your froyo. Or android. Could be they are ALLOWING ONLY KNOWN IP ADDRESSES now..(Since you dont know what an allow list is) Happened to me at work. And i dont have 3g at work so it sucks.
Only other explanation is that you screwed up during flashing. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. I mean.......my wifi works just fine and ive flashed every rom in the dev section...currently on ec01 and wifi wpa2/enterprise is flawlessly working.

I'm fairly certain its not either of these issues, considering after I flash a rom I can connect to my schools network fine the first time. Its the subsequent connections that are giving me issues.
Here's a link to the issue on googles open source android project.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1386
It basically says that it was an issue not present in 2.1, introduced in 2.2 and fixed in 2.3. I'm wondering if anyone knows what system files might affect this (wifi driver, certificates, deeper kernel issues?) and if anyone can point me in the right direction so I can start trying to pull files from other builds and see if it fixes my issues. I'm a complete noob but willing to give it a shot.

I discovered this issue not matter which rom I flash (CM7, CM9, Motoblur, etc.) : my wifi never goes to sleep even though I set the sleep policy correctly in the settings...
Any idea what to do ?
Up ?
Any clue on why this is happening. I had a massive error this morning (phone wouldn't boot) and I had to revert to full stock and the bug is still there...
have you tried reflashing system with RSD? or airplane mode?
I just flashed through RSD and the Wifi is always on. And I don't want to go in Airplane mode...I still need my phone for phone calls, you know...
just try to turn on Airplane Mode. If wifi will be turned on then you have hardware problem, and you have send your phone to service
Airplane mode actually shuts the wifi, as it should...
Wifi shuts off around 5 minutes after screen is shut off IF there is not data being transfered. Maybe you have a rogue app that keeps your connection busy? Hmmm

Try flashing this. It's for ICS based roms, but it sets permissions on 3 files that cause your phone to not fully go to sleep

Do these files install in the correct location? I was reading a discussion not long ago where some thought /system/bin and some thought /system/xbin. There was also a mention of setting permissions.
Edit:
I just remembered that I also downloaded a file from your Goo Atrix page. It is a different file size from the link you posted in the message I am replying to.

It doesn't install anything,,,,just fixes permissions on the files
That fixed my problem with the BT not letting the phone go in to deep sleep. Thanks!

I looked at the script and a recent flash of jokersax v070, the permissions are already set to root:shell 744 (rwxr-xr-x) on the directory and files, so no need to flash on that rom in my opinion

I discovered this issue not matter which rom I flash (CM7, CM9, Motoblur, etc.) : my wifi never goes to sleep even though I set the sleep policy correctly in the settings...
Any idea what to do ?

Happens with CM9 here, but only at my work. At my home wifi sleep works.
I'm testing the solution given here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23211
Wifi entered sleep normally after the change. I will test more.
I can also confirm that the phone will deep sleep and that WIFI will sleep with this patch on Jokersax' CM9 0.7.0.0. Without the patch neither of those things worked.

If you look at the scripts you'll see that jokersax 070 already performs the steps contained in this script and on a phone without this applied the files do correctly reflect the permissions per this script. I can see that you are battling with this issue, as many are, but considering the two scripts are identical, it makes no senses to make this claim. I do believe you regarding the symptoms. And I am unable to offer an explanation regarding the apparent change on your phone.

I can say it's really working with the solution I post in #16

I had a good read through of the link on Google code you posted. It didn't, or was not apparent, where the edit was made though.
Edit: Hiddensecuresettings.apk?

[KERNEL] 2.6.32.61-nAa-jb-06 [ROM][JB-4.1.2]Release 4, broken wifi and camera issues

love the x10 mini so flashed it to JB hoping to get a little more life out of the old thing. but I have run into a few issues.
1/I have two wifi routers, with this rom my phone will authenticate on neither, sitting right next to one it's telling me my signal is low, I had been able to connect to wifi once at random when toggling wifi off / on several rooms away but only once. wifi is a deal breaker, I need it else the phone is no good to me, I tried disabling DHCP but I have no idea where to start troubleshooting this one?
2/camera, the default camera apps sucks, I switched to opencamera but for some reason with both apps recording video is extremely choppy, any suggestion on this? Im just using a standard 2gb card at the moment, worth getting a faster card? is this an issue with the rom? it's choppy enough that I would say it renders this feature useless (also I don't have swap on yet)
3/loudspeaker in calls, iI exclusively use loudspeaker when making calls, Im not sure where this is on the new rom?
4/a full keyboard is cool but is there no way to get the phone keypad back as an option?
thanks

1 About the WiFi: Remember that the phone only does WiFi b/g, if you have your routers set to n it won't authenticate, if it's set to automatic (where it chooses to use n or g depending on the device trying to connect, it may already be connected in n-mode to another device, and can't or won't switch down) Try forcing WiFi-g in your router and you may have more luck.
2. The choppy video is ROM-related, there is a fix for it. I'll attach a zip below that you can flash through CWM. (omx_fix.zip)
3. When the call is connected there is a loudspeaker-button on the call-screen you need to press. With an outgoing call you can press it as soon as you start dialing, with an incoming call you have to answer the call and then press that button. There is no way to answer a call on speaker directly.
4. I use the Sony Xperia S ICS Keyboard, which works nicely in keypad mode. I'll also attach that below, just flash it with CWM

thanks so much on helping with the other issues, the loudspeaker, I guess I just missed where the button was? the wifi is still an issue tho...
the router is an oldish one (netgear dg834g v5) it was set to G only, I changed it to B & G but still just sitting on "connecting" authentication mode is WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key) if that makes a difference and my phone is baseband M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015, not even sure where to start with this one? the other access point is also an old one (WL-HDD) both use strong passwords (upper and lower case characters and numbers)
Thanks

Maybe restarting your phone with WiFi enabled will do the trick. It's been a while since I went through all this, but I think that could solve your problem.

still no luck, but its worth mentioning the phone works fine as a tethered hotspot, restarted the router made it connect but as soon as I was out of range back to hanging on "connecting...."
Thanks for all the help video recording is a lot less choppy but it is not as smooth as it was with the factory rom (thinking faster SD card maybe help?)
The wifi just has me scratching my head, I see 6 nearby adapters, the phone is saying none of them have any signal (the list seems to be refreshing rapidly) my router is just flashing between 5 and 0 bars stuck on connecting.
are there any other functional roms that anyone can suggest I try to see if I can get some different results ?

I did just head over to the page
"Downloads -- do NOT mirror files anywhere"
click downloads
Sorry we shut the site down.....
yeah should have mirrored those downloads!
the download pureslim worked, using same kernel (E10_2.6.32.61-nAa-06.ftf) behaved exactly the same and wouldn't connect to wifi but from what Ihave seen I think this kernel has a newer wifi driver, maybe I should go looking for an older one with different drivers? or even reflash with the same one? thinking of going further back than jellybean, maybe ics or gingerbread worth it ?

Definitely not ICS if you want to go back,it had a very short development period before JB came out and is a lot less mature than JB. If you want to try going back, go for a gingerbread ROM. There are roms that work with nAa-s GB kernel and some that work on the stock kernel too.
ok different issue now .......
I try flash to gingerbread E10_nAn-14_2.6.29.6-nAa-14.ftf which went fine
first boot spamming the back button, dosn't take me to clockwork, trying all sorts holding down power up / down nothing
decided to flash back to JB but I cant turn the phone off to get it into upload mode, its just stuck rebooting, power button dosn't seem to do anthing, can't remove the battery so how do I power down?
help (digging myself a deeper hole, should I just leave it running until battery dies to get it into flash mode)
EDIT:forget that last one managed to get it into flash mode... power +home (still holding jsut home) connect usb release home hold back
wondering if there is an E10_2.6.32.61-nAa-05.ftf anywhere ? id like to try a slightly older JB kernel see if that gets the wifi fixed, maybe I should ask in a more generic section about troubleshooting the wifi?
the official downloads page goo.im being shut down is making it very difficult for me to find things
Thanks

Ah yes... flashing back to a GB kernel would require you to do all wipes (data, cache, dalvik, etc) from CWM in the JB kernel first and then flash the GB-kernel and then format the partitions from CWM in the GB-kernel to get them back to original size. (Since JB uses an extended /system partition and slightly smaller other partitions to create enough space to fit the ROM on)
You did format all the internal partitions (/system, /data and /cache) when you flashed the JB-kernel right? If you didn't, it may be an explanation for the troubles you've been having.
Flashing the GB-kernel twice will get you out of trouble if you forgot to wipe the data from the JB-kernel though, CWM will show up the second time you flash it, as far as I remember.

Thank you for all the help SmG67, I really appreciate it, I would have given up long ago if it weren't for you
Im sticking with JB on the x10 for now. it still refuses to connect to the netgear hub but I have tried it on a couple of others and t connects to every time without any issues, for some reason it just doesn't seem to like the netgear ?
any suggestions on that? if not Im still happy with it, I think it has given the old dog new life

Quite odd, you would think there is something in the Netgear router's setup that's different from the other routers then maybe...I haven't really had any issues regarding WiFi on JB, apart from trying to connect to N-configured routers. But glad to know that it connects fine now Hope you enjoy it, I know I did.
