Phone Capabilitiy Question - Viewsonic ViewPad 7 & Variants

I'm currently a Dell Streak user..... I'm happy with it, even at "2G" speeds on T-Mobile (which is actually FASTER than aTnT's "3G" network at almost half the price). My question is this: Is it possible / practical to use the Viewpad 7 as a phone without a headset? I don't care how it might look to others, as I've never been inhibited by other's opinions..... Thanks!

I used ATT's prepaid Gophone Sim with the 30 days rollover in our Vpad7 so we get 2G access "on the go" when we don't have wifi access. As such, I've only used it once or twice for a quick phone call with the wired stereo handset & to set up Google Voice - the sound coming out of the small / tiny speaker is just 0.5W - making it impractical to use except in quiet, indoor & stationary environment. There is a small mic on the buttom - but, the Vpad7 will work nicer & easier paired with a Bluetooth headset which is what I would recommend. Being unlocked, quad-band - it should be fine with T-Mo Sim.
The audio is excellent with a noise-cancelling stereo (wired) headset (Brookstone branded.)
It is labeled as a "large screen smartphone" except that it's kind of awkward holding it for a conversation, even for my large hand .... LOL

Thanks, LetIt..... I think I may give the ViewPad 7 a try because my Streak is starting to show its age / behave strangely.... I saw a VP7 at CompUSA last month for $225, but now I see they've gone back up to $279..... Any recommendation on where I can get one for a decent price? Thanks again

Wow, that price was practically a steal - got mine this July from Tigerdirect - $269 + free shipping, brand new in retail box & no sales tax collected. There's an eBay seller doing it for $250 & free shipping, worth checking it out & being the lowest price that I know of - been doing a bit of comparison & in-store comparison before.
It's on wifi mostly and very light - moderate use of prepaid 2G data from AT&T - ownership costs to keep as minimal. Supposed to get 3G speed with regular postpaid/contract Sim card from big A.
It's sold on a worldwide basis - and, the new Vpad7 x is coming soon (already released in oversea market - Japan ?) with faster dual core 1 Ghz CPU, better specs & Honeycomb, supporting Flash 10.0 (but not for the current ones) - expected to be selling at the $300 - $400 level & COULD drop the price of the existing Vpad7 more - so, wait-and-see / Black Friday or just ....
BTW, battery life is fairly good - could play Angry Birds for several hours when fully charged - more than enough to be "occupied" for a transcon. nonstop flight in airplane mode. Overall, I'm a happy camper with this cute device - waiting for a cooked GingerBread ROM soon, like others to unlock its fullest "potential"
Cheers !

I'm use it for telephone call (2g) sine I bought it last year.
It's ok. Help me organize everything that pass trough my phone.
Mail message picture video and everything. Godddd I love it.
Sorry for my weak english.

Thanks again everyone for your input. I did some research on the Viewpad 7x..... looks like a sweet device, and I agree that once it's released, it should drive down the prices of existing Vpad7s further.... however, none of the VP7x reviews I've read mention anything about telephone capability..... in fact, the initial VP7x versions appear to be wi-fi only, with HSPA coming at some future time, and even then, it's only mentioned in the content of internet connectivity, not for making phone calls... I MUST have the phone function, so maybe I'll just hope its release will still drive down the older VP7's price, so I can get one for a song

[Q] Can Streak 5 replace iPod Touch? Easy to replace battery daily?

I ordered mine for $200 unlocked from Dell, but waiting for it to arrive. Today I got an email saying it's delayed two weeks. I currently own a dumb phone (sony c905a on at&t - great camera fuction), and an ipod touch 4g. I'm not planning on using the phone part of Streak 5 because damn at&t&t will force me the data package. Anyway, my question is, can Streak 5 replace iPod Touch 4g?
Features I love about iPod Touch 4g:
-email (4 imap accounts)
-google calendar through exchange server
-mp4 lecture video playback 640*480
-Useful camera (can take photos of paper scribbles) despite low resolution and lack of autofocus
-720p 30fps video recording
-smooth home screen scrolling
-smooth web surfing zoom in/out in Safari
This might be a general Android question, but does wireless connection work seamlessly like on iPod touch? I always keep wifi on. When I drive home and while parking the car, I hear new email alert from my iPod. It's so convenient.
In the old days, I used couple Compaq iPaqs, three Dell Axims. Finally switched to iPod Touch 2g, and it changed my view of Apple products. I upgraded to iPod Touch 4g last year, and up until now, I really like it. I might even buy iPhone 5 when released this year.
Another question I have is how easy is it to swap out the battery? I know it's swappable, but is the back cover built durable enough to swap out the battery on daily basis?
pics are good, video is decent, i know you can have more than one email, i dont know how many. back cover comes off easily but i would be concerned abot the plastic that holds it in place. my biggest problem with replacing my ipod with the streak is the audio out. while the main speaker sounds good the headphone jack is well jack, the sound quality is poor at best. i have yet to hook it up via the usb to my trucks head unit for the real test. i also love how easy itunes is and have yet to find an android program that works that well.

Something isn't right. You don't wan't to pay for data when on Streak but are willing to pay for when you get the iPhone 5?

Out of curiosity, when did you order? I placed an order on 3/25 with a delivery date of 4/13 Seemed like a long wait to me, but I found a thread on dell forums saying that a lot of people have been getting pushed out delivery dates.
I haven't gotten a delayed shipment notice yet, I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I sold my iPhone 4 to buy this thing and am stuck with a loaner until I get the Streak.

Sure, I'll pay for $15 data per month if I'm getting a subsidized price from at&t.
I think all the major US communication service providers are crooks, forcing data plan on people with their own unlocked smartphones.
There's quite a long thread going on at slickdeals. Search for streak 5 and you'll see this was on front page 3/21/2011. I ordered mine on 3/21/2011. I'm sure it'll take a while until it ships.

I have wi-fi access most of the time except while driving. So I don't need or want any data plans. But if I can use Dell Streak for phone calls too, then I would have one less device to carry around.
A lot of those idiotic ATT reps told me that I won't even be able to use wi-fi if I don't have their data plan. Yeah, right. I hope you don't work for ATT, but if you do, I hope you understand where my reasoning is coming from.
I think I'll end up carrying a phone and the Streak, but I don't know yet since I don't have the Streak yet.
If I do end up getting the iPhone5, that would only be if I can still get the $15 per month or lower data plan. I still think extra $15 per month for two years is expensive. I don't need much data usage on the go, and I don't talk much on the phone. I wish some company made a cheap prepaid plan for data usage too. I know there is $30 straight talk, but I wan't something like t-mobile's $100 prepaid that last 1 year or so.

[Q] Any AT&T Users?

As the topic states, I'm looking for feedback from anyone with AT&T who has bought an SGSII, mainly where did you get it (I'm looking at Amazon right now, shipping from Worldwide Distributors), how your WiFi is performing (I saw the topic on WiFi issues), and overall how you feel about the device on the AT&T network!
I'm normally REALLY impulsive with phones, but I'm trying to make a very patient and informed decision before I spend $800 on a phone that Amazon describes as having no warranty.

Howdy, I bought mine from Clove (http://www.clove.co.uk) and am very happy with it so far. The WiFi works perfectly for me - haven't had any of the issues others are claiming. For what it's worth as well, for every 1 person that *****es/moans/complains (valid problem or not), there are usually 9 people that are happy as pie... something to always keep in mind.
The device is great and functions very well on A&T. I had a Nexus One before and even though it was AT&T 3G banded, I couldn't leave it on 3G when at my office. I was missing a lot of calls and was forced to put it on Edge.
Prior to getting my SGS2, I picked up an Atrix which didn't have an option to jump down to the Edge network. Yet, the device had no problem maintaining reception in my office. I was worried after the positive experience (and learning that my N1 just had reception issues), that my SGS2 would be forced to live on Edge but it's a champ. I leave it on 3G all the time and don't miss any calls. I think the plastic body actually helps with reception as it's not impeding signal strength. I have a theory that the aluminum body of HTC phones does degrade the signal some. Yes, just my theory, but I noticed it when I had a Desire Z as well (and why I sold it).
So, I know my response got a bit long-winded, but it's a fantastic device. Like everyone says, the build quality is very nice (no creaking, very solid feeling). I too had reservations regarding spending $750 on a device but I couldn't be happier. It's scary going without a warranty but again, you only live once. If the $750 won't kill you, then I say go for it. If it will put you in the red, I'd say hold off.
Lastly, http://www.handtec.co.uk has them as well for a little cheaper and is just as reputable. Clove ships via DHL and I wasn't charged any duty fees (unless they plan to bill me later in the mail).
Mines running great on att with h+ working on demand. absolutely no issues here with wifi. I ordered from handtec the day of release and been using for 3 weeks now. Nothing comes close plus tegra 2 games are starting to work on the sgs2.
I got mine from handtec on the release day as well. I have no issues with wifi, gps, or battery life whatsoever. I'm however experiencing audio player issue since the update and i'm sure it will get addressed. Also i'm in NYC so it would be hard to say how well it's performing but i've hit 6+Mbps downstream once
Buy it from an authorized dealer in the UK and the 2-year global warranty will be intact. Expansys USA will ship the phone back to their UK office on your behalf preserving its warranty. There's been a few hardware issues (screen, internal memory, radio) so if you have a defect when it arrives you'd want to buy it from someone who will work with you.

This is perfect, and Expansys has it for $749.99 instead of the $824.99 that Amazon has it for. The wait time will be longer, but I can hold off on the instant gratification if that means I'll have a warranty. Thanks!

How long did yours take to ship? Expansys says 8 days, but I have the option to do faster shipping...I wonder if the $30 is worth it to have it come quicker. Random question as well: are these phones unbranded, or just UK carrier phones that are unlocked?
Well it's ordered! I went ahead and did the next day shipping, for when it does process, cuz I ended up saving a lot of money getting it through eXpansys. Thanks guys for all the info, now comes the hardest part, the wait!

Hey
the international versions: do they automatically access ATT"s top (21M) 4G network, or does ATT have to make that adjustment when branding it???

The phone is capable of HSUPA (4G) so no need to fear! It's represented by H+ for the phones data connection, and it'll switch to it when data is being accessed if you're in a "4G" area.
Got mine today; using it on AT&T in NE suburbs of Atlanta. Ran speedtest.net on UMTS & HSPA; got 212/337kbps down/up on UMTS, but only 133/434 kbps on HSPA. I've seen the H+ icon a couple times, including during the HSPA speedtest, so it looks like we have some HSPA+, which I don't recall seeing on AT&T's coverage maps.

Are you sure its Kbps? I get usually around 2.1Mbps d/l and 1.6Mbps u/l speeds on my iPhone 4 on 3G. As someone above said, those are like EDGE speeds! You'd think Atlanta would be a great market for AT&T, seeing as how their Mobility headquarters is located there.
The anticipation behind this phone is killing me, I've never imported a device before, it's so exciting!

I need a new Android phone, what should I get?

My Desire is starting to feel really outdated due to the tiny amount of internal storage so I'd like to pick up something new. I know there is a Desire HD which looks pretty good, does anyone know if they have a version of it that works with US AT&T 3G (it has to be made for Telstra or Telus since they run the same bands)?
Would you guys recommend the Desire HD? Or would you recommend something else over it? It has to be GSM, work with US AT&T 3G, have lots of internal storage space, and I need to be able to buy it unlocked online. I'm willing to spend about $600 USD or so (but feel free to suggest cheaper phones or more expensive phones if you think I'd like them better).
I'm using a Desire as well.. damn good phone, but yes, its getting very dated, even with running Cm7 and tweaking it to hell for performance lol I'm in canada, but I'm picking up a Galaxy S II next friday. I dont think it's out there yet, but it is due out soon iirc. Id seriously wait for it if you have the money. I've been looking alot, comparing several different phones, but it seems the SGS2 just leads the pack currently, and by quite a bit from the reviews. There are free easy unlock methods online (a couple right on the market) and you can use it on whatever networks you want (our version works across all networks in canada)
I just bought a galaxy s2 from amazon unlocked for 650. It works on att 3g and it's the most future proof phone on three market, but if you hold out you might get a hold of the nexus prime in a couple months. Also if you want something cheaper buy the inspire 4g on ebay or somewhere else. It is the desire hd with att branding and.att.3g bands. Also the development on that phoney is sick. I just sold mine or I would offer it to you for what I sold it for (200).

^ I'll check out the Inspire. If it's AT&T branded, does that mean they'll have a bunch of useless AT&T links/apps all over, and dev features locked? And will AT&T recognize it as a smart phone (because they don't recognize the Desire as smart phone so I get to use the cheap $15 unlimited internet plan).
To be honest I would like to get an HTC if possible because my last 5 phones have been HTC and I'm basically a fanboy now, lol.

AT&T will recognize it as a smart phone, you should be able to keep your data plan though. Make sure they let you keep your unlimited plan, if the associate can't help ask to talk to a manager, they won't force you to use a limited plan if you already have an unlimited plan. Just make sure you keep the plan cause once it's gone you won't get it back.
The Inspire will come with AT&T crap but that's all easily removed through custom ROM's. The Inspire supports most Desire HD ROM's and visa-a-versa. The Inspire/Desire HD has probably the best developer support of any smart phone, it's a good phone, but the battery is small (1230mAh) and has a huge, battery eating 4.3" display. A lot of people complain about the Inspire's battery life, if you need to make it past a day with moderate usage then stay away from it. Still a good phone though.
I currently have the Atrix 4G and I love it, check it out. The Samsung Galaxy S II looks to be a great phone also.
I'm looking up Inspires on eBay and they're ridiculously cheap (around $300 USD), for example http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTC-Inspire...0600720825?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item43a92719b9
Is this right? When I bought my Desire it was around $600, even the Hero was more than 300, I can't believe the Inspire would be so cheap.
Do branded phones have any features locked, such as usb debugging, installation of non-market apps, etc. or can you do all of those things on them? I am one of those people who likes to stick to stock roms if possible, so I can live with a couple of silly AT&T ringtone apps and whatnot but I can't live with important features missing.
The Inspire is rediculously cheap because it is verging on the older side now after being out for a couple of months, and it isn't dual core. As far as I know, the only locked feature on the Inspire was the install unknown sources, but I think they have already allowed that via an ota update.
About your unlimited plan, yes. You will be able to keep it, and if the rep talking to you says that it isn't possible, ask to talk to their manager or just call back for a different rep. The thing is, your $15 Media Net Unlimited plan is not available for smartphones. They will bump you up the the $30 Unlimited Smartphone plan.
I have the Atrix 4G on AT&T's network. I bought it with a contract ($100) but IIRC they are available online unlocked for $400-600. Really great phone: Lightweight, dual-core, and it looks pretty good too. Although I heard the SGSII was the best Android phone to buy nowadays.

Hmm, that's not good. So that puts the actual price of the Inspire around $500 (adding in just under 200 for 1 year of the upgraded plan). Right now since the Desire isn't available here I can use it with the cheap plan and still get 3G. Are there any other comparable phones to the Inspire that AT&T doesn't have and that I can run the cheap plan on?
if you can find an unlocked/unbranded xperia play (aka: playstation phone) you should be able to use it on at&t. the only problem is it only has like 350 MegaBytes of internal storage, but it does come with an 8 GigaByte microsd card. it's my current phone (plus it's rooted {and themed with my own custom yellow glow theme}) it's pretty fast, and with root when you delete all the bloatware it gets almost 2 times the battery life . another thing is it isn't dual core (but who gives a crap with playstation controls) heres more info http://www.sonyericsson.com/play/?cc=us&lc=en&cid=sea_xplaylaunch_us_20110206_Google
note: this is MY opinion (never said anybody else agrees). so if you don't agree, go write in your diary or post your disagreeing opinion elsewhere.
edit: nevermind, figured out what was causing the issue
I'd probably also wait for the Nexus Prime.
And you might want to think about that Xiami M1 phone, that is about to come out, you won't find one, that is able to compete price/perfomance.
We'll have to see, how this one actually turns out to be. It it's good, it will at least replayce MY Desire!

I wouldn't go for the Xperia Play. There's already been talks about it going to AT&T sometime in Q4 2011, and when it does, they'll likely bump you up to a smartphone plan as well. I got caught with the X10. I picked up an unlocked Rogers version a few months before AT&T released it, and the week before it came out, it detected my IMEI and switched me over.

Should I buy

Ok so I have been wanting to buy this phone since launch. My HD2 works fine with WP Rom but USB is faulty so cannot sync or charge. External charger for battery required.
Anyway, the price of sim free titan is now £285. I really want to buy this but worried about these issues:
1. WiFi cellular network allocation
2. Muffled voice during call
3. Antenna issue
4. If new and better phone launched at end of year.
what shall I do? Buy now or wait?
Thank you!
1. I had problems with wifi in the past, but since the last update it improved a lot in my opinion
2. The voice quality is not the best on this phone, but it isn't horrible either.
3. Never had any issues. When Im in college or at the cinema I have some signal loss, but so do m friends
4. There will always be a better phone
Hope you find this useful!

I am so jealous that your SIM free is just £285. I got it in November last year and paid £480!
I would say it's a steal at that price. There will be only one top-notch, well two, handsets till Oct this year - Titan 2 and Nokia Lumia 900. They won't be here till May-June.
Titan can be upgraded to Apollo. My plan is sell Titan in Oct and use that money to invest in a native Apollo handset instead of Titan2/Lumia900. I think you've got to get it and enjoy it. Then go for the next phone! There will be a better phone every 3 months. If you wait for it, you will never dive into the enjoyment
Nothing wrong with this handset at least not the UK ones. Get it from Carphone Warehouse if you can. The problems you are reading about are generally in the US handsets especially the AT&T ones.
Thanks mate for your reply
Yes the handset is now 299.99 plus 5% quidco bringing it to 285.00. I posted the deal here http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/htc-titan-windows-phone-sim-free-285-after-quidco-expansys-1186159
Did you buy your handset sim free? I always do and dont do contracts. Am on simplicity deal for years. I bought my hd2 for £500 on launch day. Am tempted to buy Titan now.
Also are you positive Titan 2 will launch in UK? Where did you hear that? I thought it was for AT&T only.
PS ignore the rant i had with one guy in the HUKD thread

PS ignore the rant i had with one guy in the HUKD thread

Haha, I think Titan is good for UK as Titan 2 comes with LTE in the USA. However, the rumour has it that it will follow the Nokia Lumia 900 (which comes here in May). But instead of LTE version UK will get the 3.5G version - which still I don't think any other network but O2 will benefit from here in the UK. So both the new phones are pretty pointless for the UK. Plus Titan 2 comes with a plastic back to make up the heavy weight of the 16 MP camera. I got Titan only because it felt sturdy. I am sure Titan 2 with plastic won't be the same thing to hold! I already have issues with 3G in the UK, I don't think 3.5G (Dont know the technical word they used) will help my battery or usage!
Yes always best sim free, The UK handsets seem to be more stable than the AT&T, Bought mine second hand and it had to go for repair at HTC but probably because the previous owner dropped it lol, Not suffered from any Voice problems or any Wi Fi issues and to be honest at that price you can't really go wrong, Antenna is all down to good contacts on the rear casing and never had any problems, As mentioned by Drupad you will have the option of the Apollo Update later in the year which should be interesting.
Is it written anywhere that the Titan will be upgradeable to Apollo? Any link?
Also if new handsets or native Apollo handsets will be out at the end of the year, would it be worth it to buy Titan now if I am only going to get 6-8 months use out of it before a better phone comes out?
What I DO know is I want a 4.7" screen and i guess there is no promise that the new handsets will be around 4.7" screen wise.
My final question is the HD7's 16gb sd card could be exchanged for a 32gb card with careful surgery Can this be done to the Titan too?
My only problem with Titan is : there is no Custon Rom or Interop-Unlock Yet.
but in the future it will be out.
you wont regret it, jut buy it.
I am SO close to buying it. Can do it in 10 seconds. I bet I buy it and one week later leaks of better handsets get out.
I ended up buying it and love the phone although family angry with me saying I spent a lot of money on a brand new phone and my voice sounds muffled
Temptation got the better of you then lol, Good choice, Great phone, not had any problems with voice being muffled, Only suggestion is to move the mic nearer to ya mouth, Looks as though we may not be getting the full Apollo going by the latest posts on ere but we should definitely get Tango and hopefully some form of update which maybe a form of Apollo, Its all guessing at the moment, Enjoy your Titan as most of us are doing for now, There will always be a better newer handset on the Horizon.

US phone plans with phones purchased in Germany

I'm looking for general advice concerning phone plans (if possible prepaid/pay as you go) in the US.
We are a family of 3 and we have Motorola Nexus 6, Razr HD and Moto G. As I heard today at best buy, not all phones support all standards (GSM/CDMA). So it would be nice if member with experience could give some advice.
We're looking for inexpensive phone plans. It would be ok if 2 phones only work here in the US and we would need one that can also be used for long distance calling to Germany. We don't need many minutes or a lot of data. I think about 100 - 300 minutes would suffice per month. If there's no data included, we could still rely on wifi at home (I did this before and it worked pretty well).
I'm quite confused by the different carrier offers, but so far, something like tracfone looks the most promising. With rates of as low as $29 for 90 days it doesn't sound bad.
Another thing I wondered: I wanted to check cricket wireless, and to see plans I had to enter IMEI. After entering this number, the system reported my nexus 6 as stolen. Well, I purchased it unlocked in Germany. I just wonder if I need to jump through loops to get it activated with a sim card. But I would hate to have to purchase 3 new phones.
Any advice is appreciated. I couldn't even find the fine print for tracfone or net10 where all details of the "contracts" without contract are provided.
