2.3.4 root method?? - Motorola Photon 4G

I just came over from a evo3d and im trying to root my photon ive tried the dockless torpedo method but just cant seem to get it to work have searched high and low and all other methods say its for 2.3 soo anyone know of any new recent root methods

Use the aio root. It works the best. Make sure to extract it from the zip.

You're having problems with the torpedo method? That one worked flawless for me probably ten times. Hm. That's odd. What is the issue with it?

Torpedo works well on 2.3.4. Pay attention at the end, it gets a little tricky and its easy to overlook a command.

Best and easiest method is by using the Motorola gingerbread one click root. I've done it probably half a dozen times for the photon.
If you would like a walkthrough for a one click root here's the link.

I've used dockless torpedo method at least a dozen times, each attempt worked on the first try. Did you follow these directions?

Is there any reason to use the torpedo method vs. the one-click method? The torpedo method seems a tad bit more involved but is there some advantage over one-click?

Not that I know of, they both get you to the same place. I think the one click method goes through a reboot cycle but the dockless method is just a few lines of script while running, so it's faster.

Yeah. I like the torpedo method. It was quick. With no reboot required.

I got it. It's a matter of speed vs. simplicity, right?

I guess so. I rooted my gals Epic today, one click method, and it took a bit, and it just I don't know...felt wrong. I prefer doing it via command prompt, not sure why, I guess it just feels more acomplished. And I know what I'm doing, and what I'm pushing rather than just letting whatever get pushed. Just my thoughts.

So, you like for things to be more difficult than they have to be for the sake of feeling accomplished? LOL
All jokes aside, I do understand where you are coming from. For me, I've done so much programming back in the day that now I don't mind for some things to be done for me.

Depends upon how much it pisses me off being diffucult. Lol. But yes. Work has just made me used to akways tsking the hard road. But I haven't tried the one click root. And it didn't ever work on my Evo. Also perhaps why I shy away.

You are correct. But you can unlock the bootloader and then lock it back up. So its like this:
Root and Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Install one of the only two ROMS we currently have
re-lock bootloader
Install bootstrap recovery
install updates to whichever ROM you want through bootstrap
Enjoy custom ROM with locked bootloader and 4g love
It is really just an extra step until we get the kernel source code. This is an absolute great phone and we have great people in this forum to help you out. There are quite a few guides on how to do all of this, if you want to PM me I can help you one on one get it done if need be. Other than that, hope to see you around these parts

I don't know, I find it pretty easy to do, and I'm not very good at adb stuff. I believe there is a one click root tool also and it only takes like 3 minutes to unlock the bootloader.
So I think the whole thing is pretty easy myself. Up to you really.

I had an ogEvo as well and new to the whole bootstrap but most of this stuff just sounds complex. Really isn't a huge deal once you get your feet wet. I had the same reservations when getting the ogEVO but over time ended up doing about everything to it. Never borked it once.

Yea, it really isn't that bad, a bootstrap is more harmless than a real recovery actually. Its just like installing an app from the market really.
And on the borking the android phones. I think this is extremely hard to do because I had an OgEvo and I don't think I could have bricked that if I tried. I think Android is some of the most user friendliest software out there in my opinion. I even thought I bricked my Photon the other day, but I didn't, you always just find out it's user error 99% of the time!
At least for me it is. lol
As for the root/unlock process with the photon, I think it is very easy once you run through it a couple times. I may make a video so people aren't so scared to try it out.

A lot of people have good luck with the AIO method. I personally don't like it though. I prefer the photon-torpedo method. But that's just my preference.
I used AIO One Click Root myself, and it always works, that is true, you cannot go wrong with it as long as you follow the few directions.

If you don't have 4G in your area, then you gotta unlock the BL and flash one of Joker's ROM's and Kernel's, makes the phone ridiculously fast. Plus it still serves its main purpose, being a phone. To me, that's full of win. Plus I'm in Diego with no 4G.

It all depends on what you want the temp root for. If you want to lose some bloat use cleantool, for everything else, I'd use the other methods.

Rooting Atrix 4g ?? PLEASE HELP!!

Hi
I want to root my atrix 4G again, I had it rooted on 2.3.4 Gingerbread but I upgraded the software when 2.3.6 (4.5.141 came out. When I was using 2.3.4 I had used Pete's Root Tools. Has there been an update to this app?? I don't want to use the command line way to root this version because I don't wanna brick my phone. Is there another way just like there was in 2.3.4 with Pete's Tools in the latest version 2.3.6?
Please help!
Thanks!!
Wait, you're worried about bricking your phone by using command line, but are happy to try a random app? That makes no sense at all...
All that rooting apps do is execute the same commands you'd be typing in. At least when you're doing it yourself you KNOW which commands you're issuing and whether they worked. If something does go wrong, you will be able to see where and why; as opposed to writing yet another "clicked a button, phone stopped working, WTF just happened!?" post.
PS, I don't think it is possible to brick the phone trying to root it.

You need to give more info, are you on ATT? or overseas?
Command line is MUCH safer than an app that you don't even know what it's doing.
I was sketched out myself doing it all and frankly have no idea if I did it the recommended way, but it worked, and was fairly easy.. For the command line stuff if you're nervous just look at like 3 or 4 different write ups... the commands will be basically all the same...
I read through like 3 and watched a couple youtube videos on it...
Although that's always been my biggest gripe about this place, there isn't ever just a clear cut simple explination or walk through of everything, it's like learning from a Greek, they make you figure it out as a method of teaching... which can be good or bad mainly bad IMO...
but I can't offer you clear instructions so good luck!
I agree. Many of the guides out there are not much help. That is why I made the guide linked below. If you can't follow it, you shouldn't be messing with your phone.

Toolkit coming?

Coming from an s3 I am wondering if this may be true. Toolkit to unlock and root. Then a Odin image to revert to stock if needed
I Murder Murderers
My 2 cents, for what it's worth. Toolkits should be banned from Android. They just allow people to do stuff that is well over their head, and when they fail, the user has an "OH ****" moment and quite possibly, makes things worse trying to recover. You should learn how to do it manually so you know what you're doing, and doing anything manually also forces you to learn a few things in the process that can save you later.
Also, we already have a method back to stock, so I'm not sure why that's still needed.

This is a really good point.
When I rooted my Thunderbolt, I tried using a toolkit, and it didn't work. I was stuck halfway through the root process with no way back and no idea how to continue.
As it turned out, the download wasn't quite perfect, one of the images I was flashing to get s-off was corrupt. The toolkit never checked. I damn near bricked my phone because I was a noob and used a toolkit.
My advice is, don't do it, not for your first time. Once you understand how to recover if the toolkit fails, then you can use one. But not before.
I rooted my HTC Eris before there was a one click root/unlock app. Imagine a noob who knows nothing about Android setting up SDK and flashing images with adb. This was before you could find noob friendly guides and asking questions almost always got you flamed. I had no idea what I was doing. Once I finally rooted and unlocked I flashed a rom that boot looped. My first ever XDA post was "HELP!! Am I Bricked??".
Moral of the story, I did it the hard way and learned a little along the way. I've rooted/modded every device I've owned since.

Yep I don't think youre broke in yet unless you've went through a few minute to an hour of sweating bullets thinking you now own a 700 dollar paper weight. First time I rooted was the original adb push method with the bolt. I skipped a step and fouled it up but recovered by just figuring it out. (Mainly cause I didn't want to get flamed) anyway. Always wanting the simple way out is not always the best. Besides it doesn't get a whole lot easier than using casual. Took like 15 minutes and 8 of that was waiting on the first flash. Its literally 3 steps. It would be that with a toolkit.
I know how to do it. Just that doing it over and over again is time cosuming

Doing it via a toolkit isn't going to save any significant amount of time as you would still need to have the images downloaded and then flash them, both of which are going to be the two longest parts of the process. There also shouldn't be a reason to ever have to unlock again as there are stock restore packages that will retain the unlock status of the phone.

Just because a person chooses an easy method doesn't mean they don't know or can't learn the actual method, and just because s person can follow step by step instructions doesn't mean they actually learned anything.

I can agree to this. My wife's tbolt crapped out on her. It's easier to have a toolkit to quickly get the new device unlocked/rooted so I could restore her backup img on the new phone.
Having never used a toolkit for any phone, I can likely root or restore any phone I have just as fast as the toolkit could for someone. You learn how to do everything manually, and you will learn that in most cases, it's easier to do it that way. Also, the toolkit wouldn't work properly anyway as it would need to be able to execute Odin, select a tar, and then flash it. While you could get an application to do this, it would require other pre-requisites to do so. My opinion is that everyone should just stop being lazy, suck it up, and deal with the methods available, and if you can't do that, then learn to love stock. There is nothing hard about rooting, unlocking, reverting to stock, or anything else that I've seen yet.
