(Q) Modifying stock framework - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok my question is this. I have rooted an unlocked the bootloader on my atrix. Not really impressed with themes that are out there. Most of which have to be applied to custom roms anyway.
I have pulled my blur-res.apk and my frameowrk-res.apk. i have modified both the way i want and whem i try to adb push them. I keep getting permission denied. As well i habe also tried to install them usimg root explorer. After reboot i still have stock framework. What can i do to make my modifications stick?
Also.... how if possible can i change my kernel so that i may overclock, if its even possible on stock firmware. Thanks for your help in advance.

Do you have root access?

You should just flash a stock deodexed rom and start from there
sent from my Atrix via XDA premium

I have root access yes. But still get errors when pushing files...as to a stock deodexed rom..... where can I find one that is not on 4.5.91?

What one are you looking for? There is also a post somewhere (ill try and find it) on how to manually deodex any rom. You needvto be deodexed for that to work

This I understand. however when i have searched for the manual deodex options... search query returns same results of some program that i have to use. unfortunately this program only works on a Windows based machine. I am on Ubuntu 10.04.
All other searches take me to other device forums/threads and still offer no help with doing this on the atrix with/without said Windows program..
i understand i can run it in vbox or an emulator, however my windows xp/7 disks are corrupt and wont let me reinstall. win7 stops install @72% while xp tosses a blue screen.
hence the reason i have ubuntu as my os as it is the only none corrupted disc that i have for an os at this time.:-(

Ok.... here is something that i find interesting.... I am able to change my boot animation using root explorer. set permissions. reboot new animation is there. i have taken the deodex.zip for 1.8.3 and when it rom manager after trying to flash i get the amend script error. It says it was tossed out when they created the GB ready cwm. So how can i get a stock deodexed rom to work with? I am not finding links anywhere that will get me to a download that is a stock deodexed rom.
(Rephrase) I have found a stock deodexed rom based on 4.5.91 however am curious if flashing this( i know this is a stupid question but need to ask) should i worry about not being able to get back to my original stock backup file ( being installed in cwm) and what if any concerns should i have?

You should be fine with that. Flash away. There's always the fruitcakes if something goes wrong
sent from my Atrix via XDA premium

i tried flashing and it doesnt work. also i looked and found that i am running 4.1.26 and believe if i was able to flash the 1.8.3 deodex zip i might be hurting my phone as i am running ubuntu i have now way to recover the device as i cant get the sbf_flash to work on my system
rephrase again..... i tried following the link to the 4.5.91 and the link is no longer valid... someone out there has to have a deodexed 4.1.26 backup or zip. and i am really needing to find one... AARRRGH!!!!!

BUMP Bump ....

I'll look and see what I can pull up

That would be greatly appreciated as i have tried following everylink that i could locate in the forum and to no luck found anything that would help with the 4.1.26. i have eve ninstalled Wine on my ubuntu system in hopes that i could get the Xultimate tool or what ever you want to call it working. Still new to linux so it has been a little hassle making everything work properly.
Thanks again for your help.

I've only ever run linux from usb so I can't help in that respect. What version. The of android was 4.1.26? I can't find any evidence of it ever existing

4.1.26 is 2.2.1 on my Atrix. i'm guessing it was before 4.2.57 and long before the 4.5.91 that is out now. however i think i am just going to give up on this as none of the threads or forums have anything insightful for me. i was able to install the xutility and run it on my linux machine however i have to run terminal at the same time and switch back and forth between them to even get it to run. Even then I am still only able to get Steps 1 & 2 working. so it looks if i want a deodexed system, i have no choice but to run one of the custom roms. which honestly i dont even want to do.

You don't need a custom rom. I would reccomend just updating to gingerbread at least. There's really not much point of still being on froyo

if i do the update, what is the easiest way to get root? will gingerbreak still work or will i have to adb it or have some windows based program? and also, i am curious, with afore mentioned update, will the unlocked in the corner of my screen go way as well?.

[Q] stock eris rooting Q's

well theres a lot of old info out there, having a hard time sorting some of this stuff out!
I have a stock Eris that came from Verizon with 2.1 on it already. I'd like to root it, but does that mean I have to install a custom ROM? or is there a way to get root with the ROM thats already on the phone? Sorry noob questions I know but I've read over the adb command stuff and it sound easy, but I'd like some clarification on what each command does and what each file is for, etc...I have the sdk set up already on my computer. I hear stuff about bootloader versions, radio versions and stuff too, does this stuff get modified as well during this process? and if so, is there a way to revert to 100% stock if I have to send it in for warranty or insurance? keep in mind this phone already had 2.1 from verizon, if that matters.
You can root your phone using jcase's 1 click root app from the market all you have to do is run the app, reboot into recovery by holding power and volume up or down(mine ia volume up my roomates is volume down) and flash the rootme.zip file the app places on your sd card. Doing this will root your current os and you will not lose any data. At that point you can wipe and flash a custom rom instead of the rootme.zip by having one downloaded and already on your sd card. Make sure its not in a folder. If you want to do things like overclocking you will need a custom rom as the stock kernel does not support it. You can also just flash a new kernel its the same as flashing a rom. Anyway check out jcase one click root thread in the eris development section for more detailed instructions and on youtube lostelement has some great videos showing how to root the eris and flash a rom step by step. Hope this helps.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
can you still root this eris using the command terminal? or do I have to do the 1-click method? and as far as returning the phone to 100% stock, is there a RUU program that will restore everything to stock? I've seen some threads but it seems like many of the download links are getting broken for some reason?
EDIT: also, jcase's 1-click method installs Amon's recovery correct? and this file..."rootme.zip" is this like a "patch" that is applied to the current OS to provide root, whereas flashing a new custom rom will delete and replace everything but this custom rom has been writtn to provide root access already? sorry so many questions, just trying to get a handle on this before I try it and do something stupid/expensive haha
Yes there are ruu's to go back to stock. I believe you can still use the terminal but one click root is easier and it does give you amon ra recovery. Flashing rootme.zip will root your stock os and give you superuser permissions app which allows you to manage what apps are granted root access.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
And customs roms are all ready to for root. If your flashing a custom rom you don't need to flash rootme.zip.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Does flashing custom roms change the hboot version or the radio version? Also for some reason when I do the vol-up+end when I power on it shows a screen with a red triangle with an exclamation point, is this normal until I flash the new recovery image?
Yea that's normal until you flash a new recovery and the roms don't affect the radio or hboot. They must be flashed separately. Be very careful flashing a radio. A bad radio flash is the easiest way to brick your phone.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
probably wont touch the radio or hboot, not many ppl seem to need to. as far as the RUU goes, it will re-flash the recovery and the rom back to the same as they were out-of-box correct? wondering if anybody has a link to this file, all links i've found are broken
I haven't had to use it but from what I understand its an executable file that you run on your pc while your phone is plugged in via usb. If you need it im sure someone would be able to post a fresh link or email it to you.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
thx steve for all your help so far If anybody has a link to the RUU for the official original 2.1 eris, email it to me or link in this thread, also wondering if theres a link to the official 2.1 ROM (the non-root version and not the leak versions, the "official" OTA is what I mean.) In case something bad happens with a ROM I install that i have the original to flash, thay way I can keep Amon's recovery on the phone instead of using the RUU, personally having a hard time finding it. seems liek all the stock roms are labeled PB00IMG?
After you root, in amonra you can do a nandroid backup, which will completely back up everything on your phone to your sd card. If you don't like a rom or are having problems you can just recover your backup and your phone will be as it was when you made the backup. I keep nandroids of a few different roms and just switch between them sometimes.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
So is there any advantage at all to being rooted on the stock rom? That's where I am now. I will probably stay there for a while until I decide what ROM I want to try. I installed an overclocking widget from the marketplace just to try it out, but from the sounds of this thread, its a waste of time with the stock rom.
Rooted on a stock Rom sucks. Battery life compared to a froyo based Rom is exponentially better imo. Nonsensikal vanilla v7 was the Rom of choice but I'm back to stock because I have to send the phone back to VZW

Yea I would recommend kaos froyo or tazz froyo. Im currently using kaos 35-1 and the battery life is amazing. Check out DS36 thread on improving battery life by using set cpu and auto killer. It's really not that difficult one click Eris root run rootme.zip download and extract the Rom of your choice. Run amon ras recovery nandroid backup wipe flash new Rom and voila. Easy as pie.
Sent from my Eris using XDA App
I did the one click Eris root already, and just applied the rootme.zip. So installing a new rom would mean copying it to the root of the SD card, rebooting and holding down the volume key and then picking that new zip file, correct? I don't know what that amon ras recovery thingy is. Is that part of rom installation, or something that I need to acquire separately?
You need to copy the Rom to your SD card and use estrongs file explorer download from market and long press on the .zip file it will pull up a menu that gives you some options. Extract from the .zip file and hit ok no new path is needed. Now that yuu have the file on your SD card reboot and go to recovery nandroid backup then wipe then flash from zip. After it unpacked and loads then it will prompt you to reboot hit okay and let it do its thing. I'm going to end all this with saying double check the forums for how tos and I'm not responsible for a bricked phone do this at your own risk but have fun itsreally not that difficult

If you are going to flash another rom don't even bother rooting, there is no need.
It looks like the file system isn't writeable, usually running "adb remount" first will make the file system writeable.

To be honest, it might be easier flashing a custom ROM via odin that's already rooted. Or you can flash CM7. Should take about 10-20 minutes once you have everything you need downloaded.

You need to flash CWM recovery fixed for CM7 using Odin. Then you need to 3-finger into recovery. If the phone boots you'll have to reflash recovery again. The stock kernel reflashes recovery every boot. Once in recovery you can flash Miui.
Miui is what I run, I would recommend you use 916 with JTs 1016 kernel. Or 1028.1 with It's included kernel, or his 115 kernel. 916 Miui is consider the most stable version. I've found 1028.1 to be extremely stable as well. 11-11 wasn't as stable for me so I went back to 1028.1
As icemanwbs said, look up my guide in the general section. just replace cm7 file with miui...seriously it works and is easy to follow. refer to section 3

How can I downgrade sony tablet S wifi 32gb US from unrooted ICS to Honeycomb??

You cannot do that
You must be having a rooted tablet s if u want to do that
I had a rooted 3g tablet s but after I upgraaded to official us ics wifi I lost the root as well as 3g functionality

If you flashed the untouched official ICS update, you will not be able to downgrade until you have root again. Unfortunately, there is no known root exploit for ICS on this tablet.

I am going to try work with a program my friend showed me called mercury downloadable from here (I would put the link here but it's not letting me just google mercury-v1.0 framework) from my understanding it's a bit like adb but for hacking
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium HD app
Ok today didn't go as planned I couldn't get mercury working the computer was not connecting to the device if someone else would like to try please post ur results here other wise,
I need idea's any idea's on how to get this to work crazy, silly, and brilliant idea's they r all welcome I have a silly one which I'll like to share and two questions as well.
Idea connect the flash memory of the device to a USB memory stick then access the memory of the device like it's a memory stick then u can easily access root files or install root but it's desperate and silly and because the way the memory is placed on the board of the device their is no where to connect it to the memory stick.
Question 1 the command adb reboot reboots the device right but adb shell "reboot" requires root so is it possible to use the same privileges that let u run adb reboot to do root things.
Question 2 the system wipe wipes the /data file right if u could change it to wipe the /system file then u remove the system removing the problem of trying to flash the older system than the one on the device but to contradict my own question the device does the wiping in recovery mode which we can not change atm :-(.

Idont know how to brick but if u tried take care of :
8. I've bricked my device! What can I do?
- As long as your 'region.zip' file is not damaged, then for 99% your tab can be fixed.
Firstable try to flash this 3.2.1r2 firmware.
In most cases it works. If it will fail then:
1. Boot into RECOVERY;
2. Try to flash the update again - it will fail - thats ok;
3. Wait for 2-3min to get adb available;
4. Use 'adb pull /tmp';
5. Post your recovery.log and region.prop files.

This sounds really stupid but it is like i say:
To brick your device, you must have a rooted tab

[ROOT] Photon-Torpedo Direct v1.1 (8/10/12) w/How To Video(New Video Added)

I figured I would put this together as alot of folks seemed to be having trouble with the Photon Torpedo Method of rooting. Since Ive been nuked with the new update I put together a torpedo package that is mostly scripted so it should be nice and easy to install.
Standard: I am not responsible if you brick your phone!
Who Should Use This?
- Users that have devices that are not rooted
- Will work on all builds up to 4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_13
Who Should Not Use This?
- Users that are already rooted.
Whats Included?
- Newest su Binary as of 8/7/12
- Newest Superuser app
- Busybox Installation
- Root Cleaner (will clean up old root installs or unroot current ones) {NEW! with v1.1 8/9/12}
What Does This Do?
- Installs All Components Needed for Root Access
What This Doesn't Do?
- Unlock Your Bootloader
- Make You More Popular
Instructions
- Download
- Unzip
- Make sure Moto Drivers are installed
- Make sure phone is in USB Debugging mode
- Run Photon-Torpedo Direct v1.1.bat (Sorry Mac users Windows only at this time)
- Follow on screen prompts
There are 5 commands that need to be typed(2 of them are exit) and they are displayed in the script.
Tips
- When running the photon-torpedo.sh it will throw an error (dont panic) but it doesnt matter as long as it ends up at a # prompt
- When running the kill-su.sh in the Root Cleaner it will throw a mount error (again dont panic) the phone will remount when it reboots so no biggie but Im working on it

It keeps telling me I have to unroot because busybox was previously installed. I am running your 1.4 rom and I unrooted it with an app off the market.
It tells me I have to remove /tmp/.X0-lock

download ver 1.1 ver 1.0 had an error in it.
before rooting if you have a busybox installed it needs to be removed via the root cleaner.

I'm not at my comp atm but iirc it was during the unroot it had me do a list of 5 shell commands and it gave me an error on the second command saying I had to remove a file in tmp
Oh and I used ginger unroot https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.darkslide.unroot

Now that I reread your post the error is normal as long as the command prompt after the error is a # and not a $ if its a # just continue with the commands.

I did continue and finish however when I tried to root it told me I still had busybox installed and to unroot.
Is there anyway I can use bootstrap recovery without being rooted so j can just reflash?

Did the phone reboot? Was there an error when the ./kill-su.sh command was ran?
And no you need to be rooted.

[Q] Can't get past boot animation on custom ROM

Lets play a game.
Hypothetically, if someone were to compile a ROM based on CM10; what would make that ROM go into a never-ending boot animation on a clean flash (wipe data/cache/dalvik), yet boot up without a problem when dirty flashed over a CM9 variant. One might think that since a dirty flash over CM9 works, what about dirty flashing over a CM10 variant? What if it acts just like performing a clean flash and never gets past the boot animation?
Lets compound this by adding that once a successful boot-up after the dirty CM9 flash has occured; if one goes into recovery and wipes data/cache/dalvik, the ROM goes back into a never-ending boot animation.
Sounds fun, right? Any ideas?
I have played your game it sux try switching out libandroid_runtime.so in lib folder
In system/etc/permission try platform.xml
Handheld _core_hardware.xml from the rom made for your phone with the rom your installing see if that gets you out of the bootloop cycle

Thank you. I will try that.
Also, any clue as to why the rom I compiled doesn't have root privileges? I mean, I know WHY, because the su binary is nowhere to be found; but why would that be? I'm searching and will possibly find the answer before I get a response, but I figured I'd toss that little bit out there too.
Also, could the fact that I don't have su capabilities be negatively impacting my boot sequence?
Did the rom u were compilimg from have root? And are yoh using a custom kernel? A lot of kernals in my forum mostly all I use any hiw auto root the phone try a different kernal if possible

The thing is, I'm trying to build a ROM from source for a device that isn't officially supported by them. I'm not so much planning on releasing it, more as trying to jump in head first and force myself to learn. I'm about as green as can be.
I have compiled CM10 previously as a test of my build environment... you know, test something that you know should work as a control; and it has root capabilities. The ROM I'm trying to get working now SHOULD have it; why else would superuser.apk be a part of the build? I am using the CM kernel, mostly because of the control idea, don't want to introduce something that itself might have problems; then maybe move into something else.
I'm pretty sure the su binary isn't installed on this rom because it's not in the out directory in any of the places it should be; eg. /symbols/system/xbin, /system/xbin. If I could figure out which file governs the creation of that file I would be one step closer to figuring this out, but I'm getting no clues searching either my source folder or the internet as a whole. Also, updating superuser does nothing as far as root privs go. I've tried both superuser and supersu. Supersu tells me I dont' have root privs and shuts down while superuser tells me I need to update my su binary. When I attempt the update through superuser, it goes on for a few seconds then fails.
Can you gain access tonthe android market place on the rom yur compiling?

If you mean update the su binaries, no. If you mean update the superuser app, then yes. But even doing it that way, updating the su binary through the app fails.
Also, swapping out libandroid_runtime.so, platform.xml, and handheld_core_hardware.xml had no effect on the boot process.
After a good bit of research I found that the su source is located in /system and /external/busybox/loginutil in CM. The rom I'm working on doesn't have su in /system, but it WAS in /external/busybox/loginutil. I synced those files into my current rom's /system and built. The output zip has the su binary in /system/xbin as it's supposed to, but the ROM still tells me that the su binary isn't installed when I try to update the su binary.
I have downloaded a couple "root checker" programs from the market and they all say my device is rooted, yet in a terminal emulater, typing "su" gives me "permission denied" I tried using a market app to install busybox, it tells me my phone is rooted; but fails to install busybox. The Gmail app from the market tells me "Your device isn't compatible with this version", same with superuser now for some reason... My baseband also shows as "unknown" yet I have full phone/wifi capabilities. I'm thinking I've got something mixed up in the code somewhere.
Ok try this from the rom ur basing your port on the rom made for your phone take the framework.res.apk and framework.jar put them in your port

Tried this too, no luck.
Here is a better question that might help me track down what is going wrong... when dirty flashing over another ROM, what part of /data, /cache, or dalvik is essential to this ROM booting up successfully? There has got to be something in those dirs that allows the rom to boot because just a simple wipe of those 3 areas (or a clean flash like every other rom in existence) renders it unable to move past the boot animation. Is there any kind of log that might be generated showing me what part of the boot sequence it is hanging on?
Also, I downloaded a CWM flashable su binary/superuser.apk and I now have full root privs, yet the su binary/superuser.apk that is built into this ROM fail to give me root access.
Have yoh pulled the battery for a ffew minutez let it sit reinsert the battery do a full wipe and reboot? Also is the kernal your using made for the rom is it stock kernal or custom kernal?

I've tried holding the power button until it resets, it still hangs. I've pulled the battery and let it sit, it still hangs.
I'm gonna go through and resync the repo; start from scratch so I can make sure when I'm making the modifications to my device/kernel from CM that I'm not leaving anything out. I might even try to use a device that is officially supported by both this rom's developers and CM10, maybe try to see if there are changes between CM's device tree and this one to see if I'm forgetting something, need to add something, etc... Also, I'm going to keep a log of my changes (like I should have done to begin with) so I can know exactly where I started, what I changed, and the result of those changes. I had modified some of this roms files but don't remember exactly which ones I changed, where I changed them, or what I did. Basically I was destined to fail before I even started.
I do appreciate your help, but judging from how long it's gonna take me to re-sync this repo on my horrible connection, I'll give you at least the weekend off from racking your brain with me
