[REF] switch to another modem version without recovery - Galaxy S II Android Development

Hi all,
months ago i found an easy way to change the modem on your phone without the need to go into the recovery mode. i planned to publish it about a months ago when i was still playing with the I9000 and reclaimed invaluable nand space but then i switched to I9100. actually the trick is simple and can be used on both I9000 and I9100 (or may be others as well, not tested)
http://ykkfive.blogspot.com/2011/09/switch-to-another-modem-version-without.html

1st one, thx

Should I root my brand new SGP 4.0?

Hi all,
I ordered a SGP 4.0 and will receive it today. Should I root it as soon as I receive it? Does 'rooting' make any changes to the stock firmware? Does it change anything else compare to a stock SGP beside that it will have 'root' permission?
I am new to the Android environment as I have never owned one before, but I am an embedded software guy by trade (on a totally different discipline and processor family) so I'm not a stranger in the firmware world and Linux environment.
Later, I like to learn programming/hacking the Android for fun and hope that I will be able to contribute something.
Thanks for any comment.

No, all it does is just give you root access.
Not really, unless you want to use Titanium Backup. Mine is rooted (I think, can't remember lol) and I really don't see any other advantages except for overclock apps or other root-only apps.
Overall, it's not necessary. Just flash a ROM (I prefer CM7 or Klin's Klassic ROM) and a kernel (NOTE: Steve's kernel for the US and INTL 4.0 may cause bootloops if you boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery).
Thanks! I appreciate the replies. So, if I want to root, I just grab the latest version of Superoneclick and have at it?
If I were you I would wait a little longer and get some more information about this, beofre rooting. I rooted my Player using Superuser, just the latest one I could find.

I rooted mine using DoomLord's Easy Rooting Toolkit v4, but AFAIK superoneclick should work as well.

See, I used DooMLoRD's Rooting Toolkit, which I find to work, unlike the time I tried to root with SuperOneClick. If one doesn't work, go with the other.

Almost all devices using 2.3 will work. SGP4 does work with it. If you see galaxy s I9000 expect SGPs to be in it.

Its the model info like i have galaxy player 4.0 YP-G1 and on gameloft games it says device is incompatible so i used the es file explorer and enabled root explorer in settings and went to phone/system and look for build.prop make a copy of it and put it somewhere and i changed the ones that had YP-G1 to GT-I9000 save and reboot and it fixes the incompatible message

Uummm...hell yeah!
I would 100% suggest you root your device, mainly for the fact that all the custom roms are more stable and user friendly than the stock samsung ROMS, I rooted my SGP installed a custom ROM on it and I'm living it up, I'm so happy that I can't even explain it. I couls give you the link to the rom forum for the SGP's if you want?
It will void your warranty. but i think its still worth it .it raly depends on what you want to do with your android.

Hey, I'm a huge novice at all of this. I've had my player for a few months and I've heard of tons of people that have rooted their device.
What does it allow you to do? Is it how you get more themes?
I'm very unintelligent on this subject so any clarification would be great...

I know that, 'cause i'm an advanced user, my phone isn't rooted, i'm using the official stock rom ICS from Brazil and I can't update via OTA 'cause it gets error.
So, that' s why i'm trying to root to restore a backup made by CWM.
I would like to know if is there anyway to root using the recovery stock from S 3.
So I finnaly can use the CWM and use the mobile Odin Pro.

I'm not certain this would work as this was a exploit back in froyo, but possibly if you included a flashable zip named as update.zip on your SDcard, that is singed and includes a busy box binary that *might* work? Im not certain... this would at least require you to have notepad++ to write a script to call the busy box binary from the native 3e recovery... you'd need to have a zip or archive manager of some description also? So that already knocks this option out of the question. Can i ask why it's needed to not use a PC? If we have more context of what you're trying to achieve along with why specifically you can't use traditional methods that may help members better help answer your questions?
Like i dunno if what I've suggest IS really out of the question? Is it that you don't have a PC what so ever, or you don't have access to one that allows you to install things like drivers to in order to make your phone read to flash using odin?
Have you consider a USB flash drive and portable apps use d down at your local internet cafe?
I need more context buddy

Today I can't use a PC, tomorrow I will, it's just that i would like to do it right now 'cause i've tried to go back to ICS, and tried to update via OTA to JB and because of this i had to unroot my cel.
Unfortunetly i had no success. I don't wannna have to wait untill tomorrow, so i would like to know if is there a diferent way to root only using my cel, not having to use a PC. So I can restore the backup CWM.

That was exactly what I explained to you in my post. I'll try make you an update zip now. I was hours away from home myself yesterday when i posted my reply, so I tried to explain so that you could maybe find one your self. I know exactly what you want to do and why now...i didn't know why without a PC. I can see that now that you don't have access to one so that would be extremely difficult to try to do, hence will try make one now for you
I have my doubts of this working, but we can only try i guess?
Does anyone know of 3e uses edify scripting?
Edit: I have created both for you and 2 x both edify and amend scripts. Try 1 & 2. They have different update binaries.. these will all need to be renamed update.zip and placed on your SDcard and flashed through 3e recovery to work. Even then I'm not even sure that they will work but it is worth a try? They have busybox included but they that is just to support root not to perform all the busybox commands. This doesn't flash a new recovery for you to restore your cwm zip, however you may obtain root access. I didn't have a custom recovery image for i9300 available (only i9305 LTE) and my internet is capped and I'm out of data on my 4G phone. It's the best i could do... I'm uploading very very slowly
Even if you get custom recovery could you please flash these and tell me if they work just to gain root? Thanks. And don't forget to rename to update.zip
Thank you all for the help, did odin by Root. Thank personal

If you were an "advanced user" as you put it, you wouldn't be asking this, because you'd already know it.
- There is no need to root to update ROM
- The Brazilian ROMs are among the worst Samsung has to offer
- If you already have CWM installed, you don't need a PC in order to root. A PC, however, makes things a lot easier (emphasis on "a lot")
- With CWM, just download some kernel like Siyah and flash it. It will give you root.
Stop calling yourself an advanced user, man.

[N7 WiFi | N7 3G] CF-Auto-Root

CF-Root is the root for "rooting beginners" and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock firmwares, and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root.
Donate
CF-Root has been available for many devices and has clocked over 9.5 million downloads. This is not even counting custom ROMs that already include it. Don't be a leech, buy me a beer (and use the "Thanks" button!). Imagine if every CF-Root user has donated me $1...
What's installed
- SuperSU binary and APK
- Nothing else, that's it.
Installation and usage
- Download the ZIP file (see post below for link)
- Extract the ZIP file
- Boot your device in bootloader/fastboot mode. Usually this can be done by turning your device off, then holding VolUp+VolDown+Power to turn it on.
- Connect your device to your computer using USB
- Windows:
--- Run root-windows.bat
- Linux
--- chmod +x root-linux.sh
--- Run root-linux.sh
- Mac OS X
--- chmod +x root-mac.sh
--- Run root-mac.sh
- Follow the on-screen instructions - watch both the computer and the device !
Note that if your device had not been unlocked before, this procedure will wipe all your data !
Are you having fastboot driver issues? You can find fastboot drivers in many places, but the easiest way is probably just installing the Android SDK.
Did you see the red Android logo during rooting, but SuperSU does not appear? This may sometimes occur due to left-over files and settings, however, you can usually install SuperSU from Google Play at this stage and it'll just work.
Not included - adbd Insecure
As this CF-Root does not include a custom kernel, adb shell does not have root access by default (you can still get it by typing su inside the shell), nor is adb remount supported, nor will adb push and adb pull work on system files. adbd Insecure can be used to remedy this situation. (No idea what this is about ? Don't worry about it !)

Thank you Chainfire -- I always buy and use your apps. I appreciate you offering them for free on XDA as well for the less-privileged of us. Your work is art.
Sorry for the most probably horrendously obvious question, but do I need to unlock the bootloader to perform root with this tool? All other tools mention it specifically, but I can't see anything here saying that. I've got the 3g nexus 7 and just want to root it as quickly and simply as possible, remaining as close to the stock rom as possible. Any help would be great, thanks!
@Chanfire, I'm new on this device, I just bought my nexus 7 32gb wifi only and I don't really like the idea of rooting it using those toolkits around here... I never like them. I also has an international galaxy s3 which I rooted using cf-auto-root and update it using mobile Odin pro.
The thing is that I don't really understand if I should install the android sdk first on my pc (running windows 8) to use this method for rooting my n7. I want to keep it stock but rooted, just like my s3.
My n7 has been automatically updated to 4.2.1 so I only need to root it, so please I need to know if I need to unlock my bootloader first or if I only need to connect it to the pc and run the .bat file from this post and that's it.
Please help me here!
Thanks a lot in advance for all your help!

Use WugFresh's toolkit. I was as hesitant as you but it was as easy as anything. Unless you know the coding and all of that I really wouldn't bother trying to do it yourself, the SDK is just to get the drivers so that you can use fastboot, then you need to unlock the bootloader and then you can root it, for the sake of all of that you can do it in 15 minutes with WugFresh's toolkit and be sure you haven't buggered it.

Not sure, think it might be a bit shakey for the drivers, but he's just put an update out so might be ok now. Worst case could you not just wing a W7 laptop or something somewhere?
hello to the forum, chain fire, can you develop a cf auto root for the Samsung sgh i927. It is running UCLG9 as the rom for the phone it is based off of Ics 4.04 leak wwhich has root in it but i dont know how to get the root privilage enable to run custom romms from cM or AOKP. So if it is possible if you could please develop a cf auto root rom for the phone. the phone is based off s2 but it has a slide out qwerty keyboard and that is why it is called the Samsung Sghi927 or captivate glide . so if this could be done a lot of users of the phone who are on ICs would truely appreciate it.

Yes, it does. Driver install was a bit of a pain in the ass but there is a step by step .jpg walkthrough. Just follow it exactly and it should work fine like it did with me on a windows 8 laptop. It's definitely the way to go imo.
I've also used chainfires roots in the past for my GT-I9000 which always worked perfectly for me. So props to Chainfire too, your work has always been appreciated.

Hello,
I have already rooted my Nexus 7 using this method, but I did OTA update and lost root access. I knew I had to take a precaution (rootkeeper) but I forgot. I already have SuperSU 1.04 in my Nexus 7. Is there a way to regain root access without erasing everything? I do not want custom recovery of course, which was why I used this method to begin with.
Thank you very much.

I used this thread for CF-Root. Was pretty easy, it was also the first time I rooted my i9300. Just make sure you follow all the instructions properly and research everything before you actually decide to go for it. Here's the link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
If you use cf root, you'll need to manually flash an updated recovery (to be SDS safe) afterwards.

[Q] Root atnt Atrix 4g having system version 4.4.145 and android version 2.3.6

Hi guys, I had got my fone locked while trying to insert the unlock code given to me by atnt and managed to get it working again by unlocking the bootloader few days back. So thanks for posting all the threads regarding the Motorola Atrix 4g. I have been trying to root my atrix 4g with system version 4.4.145 and android version 2.3.6 and have tried a couple of methods mentioned here but have been unable to do it. I get an error when I type in the script. I am a noob when it comes to such things and would really appreciate if someone could tell me how to root my atrix. Also, I want to flash a custom ROM onto my device. Any recommendations on that too?
Thanks in advance.
I think that you are already rooted, since you unlocked ypur bootloader (or these are completely unrelated?) anyway, the root method that worked for me was one involving a windows software and a zerg rush.. Thats all that I remember atm

From what I know, rooting and unlocking the bootloader are two different things. And I can say for sure that my fone is not rooted since I could not install Titanium backup app on my fone. Can you please tell me how you rooted you atrix? Also, have you installed Cyanogen mod 10 on your aatrix?
