Screen wont turn back on - Motorola Photon 4G

Something is making my photons screen unable to turn back on without a battery pull. Anyone else having this issue? It has happened three times in less than 24 hours.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

I also keep having a feeling it has something to do with the pocket detection mode. Just happened again a few minutes ago. I'm gonna leave pocket detection off and report back tomorrow or until it happens again.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

I've had that problem too, I can see the backlight turn on but the screen stays black. I wrote it off as a bug. It only did it once every few days, and yes I did have pocket detection enabled.

Yeah it seems like a badass feature but if it is causing a bug that annoying ill have to leave it off :/

Did it again with pocket detection off. Factory reset? Or did I get a dud phone?

Factory reset did not fix my issue.
Still happening no matter if pocket detection on or off.
Happen to me once every 2-3 days.

So its probably a software issue bc the button does work. Wonder if this is occurring on alien or homebase
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

The pocket detection doesn't work for me anyways.

Found a fix for this. Still pretty sad i have to pad the battery cover
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

Screen of death didn't hold up to the ghetto mod, updated to the 198_6 sbf, crossing my fingers it will cut down on this issue
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

I'm on homebase and haven't had this issue. But I also didn't have it on the stock photon either? Perhaps it's like the OTA update failing for some and not others. I remember reading some people on stock failing and some being able to do it. So I'm not totally sure......But that's something to ponder on.

DWake014 ,
Did you get this phone recently?
This is a known issue with some phones that went out with a corrupt firmware from Motorola. There is no patch that can fix the firmware from Sprint as of now. I needed to return mine for an exchange. Sprint explained that when it gets to the area on the firmware that is corrupt, as a safety mode it basically freezes the phone and cut the power. That's why it takes a battery pull to restart the phone. There was a large batch released with this bug. I have gone through 4 Photons to get my current one with no freezing issues. I would suggest not going to the same store if possible so you get a different lot # on the replacement phone. Good luck and get that exchanged asap. Peace

My biggest concern is that I got it off of ebay... I know I can bs them and go around the question likes it none of their business but do you think they will hassle me?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

If you have an account and a phone with issues they should replace it. As long as you take it to a tech center. That MAY work.
Sent from my Photon via XDA

Yeah its still a sprint sold phone and I have the protection plan on my account. Shouldn't be too many questions asked. Btw put the leaked sbf on last night and it has been going without any screen of death. I have been shaking it around and putting it down in its front and back and it hasn't done anything. Will keep this updated if it happens again
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

If you have the plan you should be fine. I got my Evo from Radio Shack and Sprint covered it. As for the SBF. I haven't flashed the new one. So not sure about it. But I haven't had the sleep of death issue either.
Sent from my Photon via XDA

You are probably fine then, about 4 hours and counting so far off the charger, longest time yet
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

I'm glad to hear it's working for you. But yeah, Sprint should take the phone in and replace it as long as it's a software issue, and they don't see you're rooted. which most techs don't care anymore anyway. And you have the insurance. Just make sure it's a repair center.

No. take it back. Not once on my Evo4g stock and not once on my 3D. Just imagine how bad it will get when you start overclocking it...
...and if you don't start overclocking it, well, wtf? You wanna underclock it just to keep it from fruitloops?
Take it back.

Mine straight up shut off once. I just chalked it up to being upside down in my pocket tho
My Samsung Moment did that all the time, but no thats not normal and Id say take it back. Neither my E4g or E3d has ever done that.
I got it from best buy so I'm going to take it back tomorrow but someone told its better to take it to sprint is this true?

Mine went back to Sprint today for a few strange issues, including random reboots. This was the first time I had exchanged a phone, it was quick and easy.

mine is doing that :O brand new. this was the problem i first had with my evog. so this sucks......... a lot
I should be able to take out back to either one i think. I hope they replaced it and not send out for repair

funny? anti-joke?
Reboot? Yes.
I did a hard reset after 4 days of it happening and it didn't reset for a while then it started happening again randomly. Like I could have the phone charging while not using it then a reset. It even happened to me while I was actually talking on the phone. I dunno why it's happening. It has to be the software coming in conflict with some app. I mean it's not a root or bypass method out that would cause damage to the OS. Maybe I should contact Sprint tomorrow about it.
Well, I called Sprint after I got another random reboot this afternoon. The rep connected me to order support and they're sending me a new replacement with a return kit to send this one back. So if you're having this problem, contact Sprint ASAP.
Mention to them that you did a hard reset to avoid going to a Sprint store. They won't replace it at the store if you purchased it online.
I just went to best buy and they replaced mine so I'm happy

Sort of on the same line, seems like sometimes a brief power button tap will bring up the shutdown menu, instead of putting the phone to sleep recently. Been watching it debating about returning it for a different phone. That happening to anyone else too?

This happened to me with my first phone. Random reboots, like 15 the first night I had the phone. Took it right back to the sprint store and swapped it out. New phone not one single random reboot.
Ok, I've had the replacement for 3 days now and I just got my first random reboot. I wasn't using it at the time. Just charging.

Haptic feedback randomly stops working

I have a problem where my haptic feedback stops working. This includes vibrations. It'll happen randomly. When this happens if I drop my phone onto a table (say from about an inch up) the vibration and haptic feedback work again. sounds like a hardware issue to me, anybody else having a similar problem? I haven't searched since I'm on my phone and not on a computer. can anybody point me to a fix?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Actually it seems to work again with just a slightly forceful shake or a tap to the front or back of the phone. Wtheck is wrong with my phone lol

Same problem here
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Weird, this has actually happened to me twice in the last three days too. Never happened before. Haven't done anything recently (haven't unlocked my bootloader yet even lol). I found that a simple screen lock and then wake will fix. It seems mine happened when too many vibrate type things happened at once and sort of killed it I guess.
mine will still not work even with screen toggling.
i assumed it was the activation of a vibration command before the previous vibrate command had finished, but i turned off the keyboard haptic feedback and its still occasionally shutting off even when i havent pressed any button yet. I am sorely annoyed at the moment..
Have the same problem notice it after flashing 1.8.3

then I'm assuming its the small motor inside thats starting to malfunction... Sadness.
Can anybody on 1.2.6 or 1.5.7 verify if they have the same problem?
bump. we must solve this heinous problem.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.
TT_TT I guess I'll just turn off all vibrations.. :<
In my post on this thread's first page I said it had happened just a couple times. Since then I've noticed that it happens probably 3+ times a day lol. I too fear that it's a hardware malfunction, which is VERRRRY unfortunate. I'm sure any of us could send in our phone to get a repair, but that is a huge fatty hassle.... I wish I was in that 30 day period still, I have a ton of problems with my phone (problems that I'm unsure an SBF flash can fix). But I'm not about to dish out mula for a phone off contract
mm if we applied pudding we're no good for a warranty replacement...
I thought it was 1.8.3 or something wrong with my current install, so i did a full wipe and applied pudding as well. Now I realize its probably hardware. I do have insurance though..
Will it blend? XD

Haha crap you're right, I totally forgot about that. Now I'm gonna have to randomly tap the back of my phone all the time xD
Perhaps once the OTA comes out that allows the unlock, perhaps we'd be okay to send it in? Claim we unlocked with what came in the update...I dunno if that'd work. Maybe I'll just buy a new Atrix elsewhere lol. Or an SGS II I've gone through too much with this phone already though!
I feel like if i traded it in for another phone I'd regret it later on (due to the advanced hardware) Once custom roms can get rid of the webtop reserve ram and get rid of motocrap, this thing will be a monster.
I want to play with the infuse (simply because texting on it is so easy) but I feel that I'd regret it later on.
Oh.. what to do. Trade in for a Desire Z and call it a day..

Yeah I love this phone, I'm just upset about some minor hardward malfunctions that aren't fixable with just ROMs and such. I considered trying to swap for an Inspire in some way, since it's been OC'd to 1.8 or something...even without dual core, that's fast! But I dunno. I suppose I could somehow swap for another Atrix of some kind.

Phone not restarting correctly!

I don't know if this affects anyone else but I have noticed that on more than one occation that if I hold down the power button and click restart phone that the phone will power down but will not reboot. I have to manually power it back on. Not a huge deal but wanted to see if this is happening to anyone else.

What would you do?

I had problems with my data about a week ago and Big Red did all kinds of test on my phone with nothing resolved. 36 hrs. Without data and a new phone was sent to me. Now my old TB is working fine so it was Verizons service in the area that was down. My question is should I used Revolutionary root to restore my old phone and root the other or leave it as is? My phone isn't hurt always in a case and a screen protector.

i agree. whenever you get a "like new/refurbished" product, you have no idea what happened to it originally(or how good the "fix" was) or more importantly, how much use it's been put through and how much life it has left.

Help needed. DNA wont boot/charge

Hello,
If anyone can save me a couple hundred bucks that I dont have, I would appreciate it.
Im running an S-OFF Unlocked DNA with
This rom - http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=2141129
and this kernel - http://forum.xda-dev...d.php?t=2021714
I've been running it without issues for two weeks. Today it just wouldnt turn on. It doesnt accept a charge. Ive gotten the white HTC screen to come on for a second a couple times, and I've gotten it to boot up fully once. But after the screen timed out, it wouldn't come on again.
Any help would be appreciated. Dont have money to buy another phone.
I've tried searching. Most people that have boot issues can at least get to a bootloader or recovery screen. I cannot.
Have you tried letting it charge for a long while? I've heard it takes some times up to fifteen minutes for the charging led to even lit.

I personally have never opened up this phone so I wouldn't know. But this is a suggestion that worked for someone else and has also worked when my nexus 7 did a similar act. It wouldn't indicate it was charging and wouldn't turn on but disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it worked for me. I doubt it's something to do with software as you said your set up was working fine for 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure this should fix it for you.

Well, I got the battery disconnected and reconnected. Even though the battery sits under the motherboard, the battery has a thin connector that its accessible without removing anything else. It doesnt appear that my problem has been fixed. I guess I wont ever know, my screwdriver slipped off the screw and connected with a pin on the board and sparked. Pretty sure I just shorted the whole thing.
Claim insurance or warranty. It sounds like a hardware problem if that didn't fix it.

I should mention it was jtagged. Not saying that was the root cause. But the inside of the phone is definitely different than a stock one. Mobiletechvideos.com put a different film on it than the one it came with. Any chance of warranty or insurance is out.
You can still try to claim it. Most of the time they aren't looking inside the phone. Though this really isn't your fault. It sounds like the hardware failed and that is why it wouldn't charge and boot. But we won't know now. I don't know how jtag works but it could have contributed to it.

Just to add my 2 cents,
I have sent back phones to verizon and asurion for issues and every phone except one was rooted and never had an issue. I even traded in my thunderboolt towards the dna when it came out (they offered me $72.00) and all i did was uninstall superuser/busybox & titanium backup right in front of the rep and my fiance then handed it right to the guy on the spot. He turned it on, made sure the touch screen worked & then said ok, you get full trade in price.
As for the other phones that I sent in, droid eris, incredible and 2 samsung, all with one issue or another, never once did they charge me or call or anything. Got the new phone next day, sent the old one in and thats it. I have never had an issue.
Now I know this may not have happened for every one but I think if you just send it in via mail and not have an instore rep look at it, you will never have an issue. I think if an in store rep sees an issue and realize its rooted, they may flag it in case it goes in for verizon replacement or asurion replacement but just a normal send in should not cause an issue.
