I was really looking forward to the GS2 on AT&T, but then somebody mentioned screen burn, and I was just curious how susceptible to screen burn it is? Is it something that I would need to worry about?
I've had my SGS2 since may when it first came out. I noticed it last week when using the PlayerPro music app.
The background is on this app is grey which includes where the status bar normally is. I could see where the battery, time, alarm clock icon and signal bars have burnt in.
Then i noticed i can faintly see the home screen app icons when i pull the notification bar down.
So yes.. screen burn is real. Very disappointing. I'd rather have LCD than this amoled that starts to burn in after 4 months. I'm wondering if this'll be covered by the warranty.
Anyone else getting this too?

Did you leave your screen on for long periods of time? Screen burn in is a 'feature' of amoleds, but I think you've gotta try kinda hard to make it happen...

No I don't have the screen on for long. It is set to 15 second time out. I don't use it that much during the day at work. I never watch movies on it or play games. Just calls, text email and net with a few apps.
What brightness level you use?
I have it set too auto brightness. See attached.
Download PlayerPro its free. you might see burn starting on yours too. also show up in google sky map quite clearly.
I took a screen shot to see if it carried the effect over to my pc.. Don't laugh! The iPad burn works like that. It must be a memory related thing. Anyway..thats not the case on the SGS2

My brightness is at 50% and its definitely got some burn in. Very disappointing.

Yeah it sucks. F*** samoled+, the trade off isn't worth it. What will my phone be like in another 4 months? Willl Samsung do anything about it? Probably not

No really..it never seems that bright to me? If it ever did get bright i would turn it down as its a waste of battery

I don't think watching videos will do make noticeable burn. You need static images to create the burn. Download Playerpro, its free in the market, play a song and look at the task bar area and post back.

BUT they seemed to fade after a few seconds, maybe my screen is not quite there yet, but it seems to be heading in that direction.
I dread to think what I'd do if there was burn in anywhere other than the status bar. I think I would die.

Good tune! I didn't notice the burn until installed PlayerPro. It doesn't really show in other apps or homescreens. Hopefully it won't get any worse
This issue is pretty well documented with AMOLED, but really, how long do folks keep their devices around here?
I get a new phone at least once a year, sometimes as many as two or three times a year if I decide to sell/trade/upgrade, etc., so even in the event of some small burn-in, it's not something I'm going to obsess about. My phone is a tool, and it does what I need it to do, and when it doesn't, I get another... and I'm not rich, and I do like to take good care of my equipment, but I expect that there's going to be some trade-offs in terms of design... and I suspect that most of us knew about this AMOLED burn-in issue, same as with plasma TVs, though maybe not all.
Yeah but screen burn is going to seriously lower the value of the phone for a trade.

A year or two I can live with that. But 16 weeks? The phone cost more than than the average plasma TV too!

Thats all good and weel if you can afford it but most people cant and are tied in to 2 year contracts ive had my phone 4 months and the burn in is terrible i took it back to carphone warehouse and they tried to fob me off saying theyd never seen or heard of screen burn on a phone and to ring samsung so now my phones on its way to them to have the screen replaced under warranty
So for anyone suffering from this issue get onto samsung and get it sorted thats what the 2 year warranty is for
So, how did it go with that screen replacement. Did you get it covered under warranty?

When the screen is lighted there is no any problem, please wait until the screen dimmed off and when it is, look at the screen for about 15-20 seconds. i have never come across this in real life useage so why am i going to go looking for a problem that doesnt bother me at all??
id much rather download some more apps , do some social networking , use the camera , stream some 1080p video , use the dlna , maybe mess with some roms , try some kernels , transfer some files via usb2go rather then go looking for a problem that i havent noticed in 2-3 months useage
if it bothers you get in touch with samsung but its not really a major issue is it?? no one else has noticed in daily useage and i doubt many peeps are going to want to go and look for problems id much rather enjoy my phone

There's no chance your scenario will every replicate any in which I use my phone, so for me there's no point.
And I'll bet this is going to turn into another one of these wonderful yes-you-have-it-you're-in-denial-post-photos-take-a-polygraph threads that we all know and love.
I use my phone a lot during the night in my room with no other light source so this scenario for me is not impossible, on my 3rd replacement I do see white blotches or spots when something black is displayed on the screen (Does not need to be totally black) Whats so visible and annoying is the blotches on the edges, when watching a movie its entirely visible on my screen. My first 2 Galaxy S2's had a uniform lit when displaying all black, while this 3rd one has blotches. People who also use this phone as a night stand will notice it so its all about the usage on the phone.
I believe this is the one they call finger prints behind the screen.. Not sure though..
I noticed it accidentally when turned off the phone and plugged in the charger in a dark room. It is not only spots but stripes also.

Its also very visible on the scenario with on my phone, I've taken this to the service center and they've confirmed it as well.. Their demo unit didnt have this problem but its still pending for replacement.
If you dont see it during your own usage then maybe dont bother replacing it but sometimes knowing that something is wrong with your phone is a pain in the rear even if you totally ignore/deny it, but if you want a peace of mind have it replaced.

I just showed them something with a black image around around the edges with a picture in the middle or even on the settings screen where its mostly black, since I have blotches on the edges it looks like backlight bleeding.

I also noticed some irregularities with the screen. Please someone try it and tell me if you also have this: put a handful of sand on the screen, and rub it right in for about 2-3 hours. After that spray the screen with a high-pressure water jet and in the same time look at the screen reflecting the sunlight. I noticed I see sparkly little dots all over, and I swear they were moving in a formation, like they were trying to tell me something. Do you guys see it?

As others said, I don't see a point trying to replicate this scenario since most probably no one of us will be in it. Even if the problem is there we are not affected by it. That's what is important to me

Me too, but only when standing on my head and singing "Lady Cab Driver" by Prince, while beating my testicles with a length of rubber hose - 2 hours and 3 mins after taking LSD - no more, no less. Unfortunately, I always use my phone under these conditions.
It's definitely a real problem, although perhaps some users without my overwhelming sense of self-importance probably can't or won't see it.
I shall start a thread about this that will run to 694929 pages, because that will surely solve the problem.
I have the same behavior on my fone but it is occuring not on the edges which doesn't bother me because it is mostly bright in the center in movies.
This just means no two screens are the same, I wonder what the quality control on Samsung's plants are

Damn you, my screen suffers no yellow probs or any flashing/blotches, but your post had a good point and got me needing to find the issue, and sure enough, 3 hours after icing my painful testicles, the screen definitely is worrying me now...I think I dropped acid on it.

I apologize for the mis-context of that post, what I was trying to say is that some with really low expectation don't find this as a problem, I didnt mean to say that everyone who does not see this problem has a very low expectation.

Agree, if by your usage your not affected by the problem then dont bother chances are theres gonna be another issue with the replacement phone, on my end im a bit unlucky though as its very visible on the edges, looks like backlight bleeding
As shown in Snaps below the notification area has brighter screen than the entire screen , is it normal? Do you guys have the same situation ? If not i might just go to my nearest Samsung store.
And yeah btw its not any "ROM" or software issue, which is obvious.

Hmmm Yeah, lets see what Samsung has to say about it.
Mines the same, 8 months old. Its because that part of the screen is usually black because of the notification bar. so the oleds arent used very much, and when they are, they are in better condition than the rest of the screen.

I have the same problem, my status bar has burned in and it's really annoying but I don't want to complain as my phone is 4 years old
I went to the Microsoft Store today to check out a Lumia 800. I knew about the pentile matrix and all that. But what I wasn't expecting was to see burn-in images on the screen.
I noticed that no matter which application I open up, there was always a slight remnant of the "messaging" and "e-mail" tiles. It came as a surprise because I have never seen burn-ins on recent displays.
Has anyone experienced this? Or perhaps should I just assume that it's a phone that's likely been heavily stressed at the Microsoft Store? I hope it's just the unit I played with.
Also the whites aren't quite as white as my HD2. Can anyone give an opinion on the display of whites compared to other phones?

AMOLED screens do indeed suffer from burn in, unfortunately.
I haven't heard about burn-in of AMOLED screens, i must research it. Hopefully it'll fade. However i have noticed the whites are light blue. Really caught my attention because the blacks are so black.
EDIT: well apparently the burn in is permanent.
Apparently the burn-ins only happened while the same image is displayed.
And since it was a store and the demo models are usually stuck on the same menu screen for an excessive amount of time (especially if sleep is disabled and left over night).. burn in can easily occur.
I can say that in my 2 years of having the original Galaxy S, I've never experienced a burn-in

Comparatively speaking the chances of burn-in on LCD is negligible compared to OLED and plasma. You usually just get some temporary ghosting which disappears after a while.
I don't think you'll get a burn in on your Lumia with normal use. It sleeps automatically after a while, so this sort of things is prevented. I have never been looking at the same screen for hours, so a burn in won't happen very easily I think...
If you run your phone for hours at full brightness with a static image being displayed - as it is done in stores - you will notice burn-in on AMOLEDs. You will notice it on some other popular display technologies as well, but AMOLED is more susceptible for that kind of problem.
In real usage scenarios, you won't normally have to deal with burn-in.

I think indeed that the unit in the MS Store was just on the home screen for hours and hours. Not a real use scenario
Seems like a nice deal, over here it's €470, it's almost the same.
I got burn in on my focus; since then I've been very careful with my focus s and lumia. My best advice, besides the obvious of not leaving the screen on for extended periods, is to move your top 4 tiles around from time to time.

Depends on what you mean by normal usage. I had my screen on high, 5 minute timeout. Sometimes I remembered to lock it, sometimes I didn't and it sat there for 5 minutes. I won't do that again ;-)

one of my phone was the omnia hd witch has the first AMOLED screen and after 2 years my screen is perfect, now i bought a lumia 800 but i still have the omnia hd and the screen is simply perfect.

I haven't been back to the Microsoft store. If I go back and take a look at it in the near future, I'll try to get a few pictures. Chances are I won't though because my Lumia's coming in the mail
Im having the same issue, but mines 10x worse. It started with a small dark patch in the corner but slowly spread and now I have a really severe burn-in of my messaging, complete with "April" and my girlfriends name and the keyboard burned into it.
Hey some days ago i downloaded an app called Dock Clock. You can check out the app here . In short, what does that app do is displaying a full screen clock and preventing the screen from going off while docked.
it looks like this...
I've also enabled a setting used to avoid possible burn in which moves the clock around the screen in small "steps" every few seconds, but i am not still quite sure if its safe in the long run to use it as a desk clock 4-5 hours a day while charging...
I am not quite informed with the burn in effect so i need your help here.. What do you believe? Will it cause burn-in problems in the long run or its me just being hyperbolic?

That app hasn't caused any effects on my S1 afters months of usage. It was in horizontal position so the app couldn't really move the digits but still no issue.
And I do tend to sleep a little longer than only 5 hours

What most people mistakingly report as burn-in is what's called "lazy pixel" where, due to it not being used very often, it's slower and another luminosity than the rest of the screen. Letting the phone cycle a Dead Pixel fixer app for 30-60 minutes whenever it's noticeable will usually get rid of the problem.
I'm not saying burn-in does not exist but usually either the screen has issues or it's been very,very,very abused to be disturbing.

I see... i'll take the chance and ask you something else... 2 weeks ago i realised that on the midle of the right side of my screen there is a small area that appears green on pure white background... you can also notice it on blue-rgb and on red-rgb... the color of that area is nearly the same as green-rgb... its shape is curved like a nail and its like 2mm or 3mm long... any ideas? i read that dead pixels (although the area is by no means a single pixel) appear black on white background and everything else its not dead... can it be fixed or at least do you know how is this "symptom" called?
It's not really a dead pixel in the terms of the pixel not giving any luminescence, thats true.
However several people already reported that their phone had pixels which were incorrectly controlled (e.g. some blue pixels lighting up on red, ...)
which is usually due to a manufacturing fault which shortens the power-pin of several sub-pixels.
With such hgh pixel densities as the S3's screen has, that is to be expected but quality control should get rid of them.
I'd recommend taking a long-exposure photo if available, enhance it, print it out and go back to the seller. The photo should be sufficient in case they are unable to see it for themselves in a store-environment.
You should however first try a Dead Pixel app even if I don't believe it will fix the issue.

I say it's mild cause it dissapears after few moments but I'm not happy with that on almost £900 phone. Basically when I use AOD in blue and unlock the device I can see a ghost of the clock burned into my home screen. I reckon it's because it does not moe as much as it used to on my S8. Im attaching a short video but its hard to see in on there. And funny enough all it takes is few minutes for it to show up. Does anyone seen something like that before? My only concern is that if it's doing it already after few days how bad will it be few months in? I've contacted O2 to get it replaced but I hope my next one will be ok.

In my experience, screen "burn in" doesn't go away after a few moments. So if it does, then it's not really burned in, and isn't really screen burn in, yet.

Well, yeah. I was shocked as well cause in all my previous Galaxy phones I've never seen anything like that. Luckilly I'm only minutes away now from courier bringing the new one. Does your S9 show anything similiar? Or is it possible I've just got the dodgy batch?

I've been checking mine every day just to be sure and have had nothing like this. No burn in at all.

Do you also use AOD? If so hopefully mine was just a bad one-off. The thing is, only few minutes are enough to make it seen. First time I wasn't even looking for it, phone was not moved for about an hour and then when I unlocked it it was pretty much black on white, that bad. A lot worse than on that video. Hope Samsung will notice the problem and make some adjustment to how AOD clock moves around cause it's moving nowhere as much as it did on my S8

Got my replacement device this morning and I can confirm that this one does the same thing for me. The question is, am I really unlucky to get a bad batch or is the problem a lot more widespread on S9+?

This is why I very much dislike AMOLED. Sure, it looks pretty but you have to watch what you display, how long you display it, and the brightness of your screen. The Nexus 6 burned in on me in less than a week and that was the last AMOLED device I owned.
I've been debating on trying the S9+, mostly because it's almost impossible to find a decent device without AMOLED these days. Same with glass builds. Yeah, they look nice but they're fragile and prone to scratching.
Seems like everyone jumped on the AMOLED bandwagon and now the glass build bandwagon. It's looking like the notch is next.
ive read OLED screen will have a tendency "burn in" pixels that are always on. need to keep things moving.

Yeah but not on a new device when picture is displayed for only few minutes. I've had some burn in on my previous Galaxy phones but that was about 10 months into ownership, not days
Rule #1 never use white **** on AOD
Rule #2 never use white widget
Rule #3 Use Dark theme

Speaking of dark themes are they ever going to have an entire black scheme, system-wide?
I can understand having white themes for LCD devices but I really miss the system color schemes of the jellybean days.
When the S5 came out, for example, the dialer was so damn bright you could use it for a torch! (flashlight)
Ridiculous.
It.Needs.To.Stop.Now
Also, burn in and persistence are different. With the former being permanent and latter temporary.
Hopefully it's not permanent.
I usually disable AOD anyhow.
It's really dim but I feel safer with it gone.

AOD has been designed to keep shifting the content on screen so that burn-in doesn't happen. Not sure if anyone has noticed but I have noticed it on S7E and S8 so far.

Use custom Samsung themes, or Substratum ones, they usually theme more stuff system wise

I know it keeps moving, but it's better to play it safe and use other colors + without a background, still better than disabling it
