AFAIK, you'll need to wait for one specific to our device. Otherwise you'll lose functionality of some of your buttons.

T-Mobile version is completely different hardware - OMAP4!
In a week or two you should start seeing ROM ports from the GT-I9100 - the differences aren't significant and in fact userland might be 100% compatible (except for the NFC stuff, which is probably only in our ROM.)
Seriously - we just got our first good stock kernel dump 2 hours ago. Expecting OS upgrades already is a LITTLE bit impatient...

+1. This is just the beginning of something great. Good solid stock kernel dump, and things can go from there. Like Entropy said, give it a week or two and we'll start seeing some Rom ports

How To Update Samsung Galaxy S2 i777 with Gingerbread 2.3.5 Firmware
Yeah, I'm a noob. I just received the SGS2 via AT&T web store. I'll be happy to thank anyone that can help (see I watched your video).
Has anyone done this? I've looked on this site and can't find any info for this technique. I don't want to root the phone at this time. I'd just like to get into the Amazon AppStore which is suppose to be possible with Android 2.3.5

You can download and install the amazon app store just fine on the stock att device. Go to settings, applications, and check Unknown Sources. If you go to Amazon's site they will text you a link to download the app.

I've checked unknown sources and tried getting Amazon to send me email and I haven't received anything yet.
Thanks for the reply.

once you have unknown sources checked, point your phone's browser to www.amazon.com/amazonappstoreapp and it should start the download

or you could flash Perception...It is a port of KI3 from the i9100 forum.

tchan012, you're a genius! At the minimum a heck 'o lot smarter than I. Thanks, that did the trick. I was able to D/L the Amazon Appstore app. And then the app.
Mucho thanks.
Another query. Is the only way to see where files are stored on the phone via usb cable to a computer, would be to root the phone? I found a few apps I'd like to drop into the phone via usb cable/computer but can't find the apps already on the phone.
Being a noob is frustrating.

Accidentally quoted myself instead of editing, see below. vvvv

Whoops tried to edit not quote.

You cannot see certain parts of the internal memory through the USB cable (even with root). But, you can copy over the apk files and install them on the phone. Then you can delete the apks.
You may be able to see where the apps are without root access, but you will only have read access to that folder unless you root. That's fine though, you don't want to touch those files unless you know what you are doing, deleting the wrong files will really mess up your phone.
Best way to install apps is to download the apk directly on the phone, then open it. It will install for you. Or, download on your computer and copy to your phone over USB, then open the file on your phone. I use astro as a file manager to locate and open the files, its free on the market and has lots of great features.
Hope this helps. You won't be a n00b for long, you'll pick it up quick.

Thanks quarlow, I'll hunt down Astro and give it a whirl. I can see very few files via the usb cable. I haven't tried renaming or moving anything as you say, it could be like running through the registry of windows and deleting various files and watching windows freeze forever.
Here's hoping my noobiness wears off soon.
In a couple of months I'll feel comfy 'nough to root the sucker.
It certainly is a cool phone.

If you want to make apps a part of the ROM itself (be VERY careful with this), you need root.
If you just want to "sideload" apps - root is not needed, just enabling Unknown Sources. Once you do that, you can install apps from file managers, the browser, or using ADB. (USB Debugging)
For more on ADB, if you're a Windows user you may want to check out Droid Explorer.

Thanks for the info. Are we there yet? <oops sorry, talking to the wife, she's driving...>

[Q] AT&T Galaxy S2 ICS problems - (posted previously in wrong place)

I am new to android so I'm trying to learn, and in the process jacked up my phone.
So I did something not so smart and updated my AT&T Galaxy S2 via these instructions:
androidauthority samsung-galaxy-s2-ice-cream-sandwich
(sorry it won't let me post the URL)
It actually worked, however, my back button doesn't work, and my search button doesn't work, I can make a call but can't hear anything and they can't hear me and vice versa.
I realized there are some samsung glaxy's out there that just have the home button, I figured I must have loaded one of those roms so I tried to load the "stock" rom to go back to where I was.
I can load the stock rom but when the phone boots up to the green android symbol startup wizard the phone just sends a cascade of errors one after another and you can't proceed any furhter.
So I went back to the orignial ICS from the post above, and the phone comes back up, only same problems but at least I can load it up and surf/get e-mail/text.
So I start playing around with mixing parts, and I find out that basebad is the "radio", and I can change that to different versions without changing the OS version, so I figure I must have some kind of mis match going on.
I used Odin and there is PIT, BOOTLOADER (I didn't touch bootloader) PDA PHONE and CSC.
Is it safe to assume if everything works but voice calls, that I need to find the right "phone" version? what about the back button and search buttons?
I have the "stock" PDA version, but I'm guessing that doesn't work because I need the matching PIT, and CSC? Where do/can I find those?
My phone shows network state connected, shows IMEI number and can surf the web but no voice, all other audio works.
Please help a newbie out, and help me understand what PIT, PDA/PHONE/CSC is all about so I can get my phone working again.
And just to be clear, I don't care if I'm back to 2.3.4 or whatever, I just want to get this thing working again.
There isn't a ICS ROM for our version of sgs2- i777. Only the i9100 international version. That's why your search and back button don't work. Also without kernel source we prob won't have a working ICS ROM. that's also why the in call audio doesn't work..
sent from my Galaxy SII
There is no working ICS for our device yet that ICS is for the GT-I9100, as far as restoring back to stock. There is ODIN One click which will return you back to stock? Can't find the best threads but this might help.

I'll try to find the ODIN one click but the one I have doesn't have that option, my other problem is a lot of the links I'm finding for stock roms are hosted by mega upload and of course those are all gone now.

Hopefully whatever you flashed previously didn't have a PIT or bootloader...
Now that fileserve is down I'm going to try and fix the stock ROM upload links in a day or two. The question is - Where?
And anyone who says Dropbox dies - Dropbox is NOT suitable for uploading ROM images, it'll blow through the 2GB Dropbox limit in no time flat.

It had a PIT, I think I just learned a very expensive lesson, the phone now just stits at the screen that says firmware upgrade encountered an issue and it just sits there, can't even boot into download mode.

No, they limit total storage to 2GB for free accounts - I already have a few hundred megs for personal use, and 2-3 ROMs would blow through my remaining storage instantly.
I think it's possible to recover from a bogus PIT flash (and someone did manage to do it after an ICS screwup), but I'm not sure how - I've never done it myself.

How about minus.com. 10gb free storage and clean interface.
Ok I'm back up and running, I managed to find a download for stock firmware that wasn't hosted on mega upload, only took a few hours to download it
Odin could still see it so I loaded up the new firmware and it works, I don't fully understand it because no matter what firmware I tried the startup screen wouldn't change, the OS would clearly change, and I could change things like the baseband and see that change but that start screen wouldn't ever change.
After my phone "blew up" and wouldnt' even go into download mode I hit it again with stock firmware and the startup screen changed this time and it worked.
What is funny is I tried the same firmware more than once with no positive effects, it wasn't until I managed to piss the phone to the point download mode woudln't even come up that the firmware fixed my problem.
Why is that, was that part of the firmware locked or something?
What do the different parts control?
I think I figured out:
PDA must be the actual OS version with apps/kernal/bloatware
Phone is the modem version
what does PIT and CSC modify?

Unfortunately, that's old news. That video is of the old version of Galnets MIUI that is based off of the 4.0.1 framework and not true ICS. We have a much better 4.0.1 framework based version of the official MIUI ROM in the dev forums, and I use it on a daily basis on my I777. Shep is currently working on getting the MIUI 4.0.3 ICS ROM built for our phones, and it looks promising.

No, the Galnet stuff was a framework hack, not true ICS by any means (not even remotely). We should end this tangent ASAP, as Galnet discussion is not permitted here (For a wide variety of reasons, their releases broke about half of XDA's rules).

Yup. If you have the yellow warning triangle, you'll see I9100 on the I777.
If you don't have the triangle, you just see "Galaxy S II" with no model number - but we ARE SGH-I777. International is GT-I9100.

Ordered my i9100 from newegg should have tomorrow. Ics Rom stability?

WTF??? A quick Google of SPH-D700 shows that to be the Samsung Epic 4G, which is a Sprint phone. The I9100 is a GSM phone. Sprint is a CDMA network. I hope you're planning on changing carriers if you hope to use the I9100.
Unless you're just confused, and actually ordered a Sprint variant of the Galaxy SII, which is the SPH-D710, or as they call it, the Epic 4G Touch.
Just so I'm clear, the I9100 will NOT work on Sprint's network.
Yea I'm aware that I am on sprint right now. I am aware that the i9100 is GSM, and yes I will be using att.

Hey, I had to check. Some folks just make uninformed decisions and are baffled when the equipment they order doesn't work on their network.
LP6 with my GPS fix works pretty damn well. FM Radio is the only real issue I have encountered. If you want a more ICS experience, push trebuchet or NOVA launcher to /system/app and it will be much better.

It's so popular it's one of those phones - like Desire HD - that's known inside and out Been out in europe for ages, but the US had better carrier specific devices, faster CPUs, etc. At it's core the same device mind.
I was in no rush for ICS but tried WanamLite and all was fine, although the launcher freezes now and then which I put down to a full phone, and an early rom.
This used the CM9 trebuchet launcher. I've got to say almost everything about ICS is cleaner, faster, smoother than previous roms - custom or not. Easy task control, nice display, and little things I still keep discovering like when you connect via USB you get a choice of media device or camera (with the usual USB development option off).
I've had this thing months and must have flashed 50+ roms lol. In the end I stuck with Leomars then the combined Leomar/Checkrom HD because of the kitchen app for easy addons and upgrades.
If youve never used a samsung dont worry, its usually a simple app that will root it and install a recovery console <- very important, cause after that you can flash anything, and as long as you get back to recovery youll be fine. Backup often - complete rom via the recovery (power on, vol down) and a data/app backup with Titanium.
I don't think you need worry about ADB or odin anymore, but if you do just follow instructions on this site...
Your reward? the best phone around esp if the rom you use adds neat things like Jkays extensions, modded apps, kitchens, good theme engine, etc. For pure Android go for AOSP roms, otherwise they're a mish mash of parts.
Change the boot anim if you want, you might get a yellow warning triangle because the sammy knows the roms "illegitimate" but its easily removed.
Finally, should you need to, the stock roms and kernels and modems are here too if you need to get everything back to default, best get them quick as the download sites are dissapearing, or rip yours first before you burn another...
Have fun! You couldn't pick a better handset right now

Just FYI. Bold/Italic/Underlined part is not exactly true. Some of the US carrier specific models have completely different hardware, and have faster clock speeds because they use inferior CPUs.

From what I can tell, you need the insecure KJ2 kernel. That kernel is no longer directly linked on Odia's insecure kernel page, but there's a link to his Hotfile upload site where all older kernels are stored.

Stock ROM for AT&T Galaxy Note?

Hi everyone,
Just got my AT&T Galaxy Note, about to Root it, Overclock/Undervolt, etc.
Does anyone know if there's a stock ROM for it floating about, that would make it a hair easier, if not, away we go! Will start a new thread as soon as things are ready, it will probably be an Odin Kernel flash root so note that it will trigger the custom binary counter in Odin, although no ones run into problems with that yet that I know of..
Hope you figure out how to root 2.3.6
So far, no one has figured out how to root the international version (LA4)
if they update via kies without downgrading, rooting, upgrading via ODIN.
Glad to see you over here.
Really quiet in here. Hopefully some action for the Rogers I717R Note also.

You should be able to get a stock firmware of any Samsung phone by using CheckFUS
Download "check fus" from the market and run it on your phone. Note the exact model number, Product Code, PDA, CSC, PHONE values.
Then open on your computer Checkfus you downloaded from the website i linked above,
1) click advanced tab
2) chose OS as Android
3) Model SGH-i717
4) Product Code, copy from your phone's check fus app
5) Hidswver: copy the PDA/CSC/PHONE/PDA info from the check fus on your phone
Click the check firmware button and it should let you download the most recent firmware for your phone.
I don't have the phone but this worked for just about any Samsung phone i had, including AT&T models.
If someone can provide me the product code and relevant information using check fus i would appreciate it as i am trying to download a stock rom
I want to adapt it for use in the korean rom

Just got my AT&T Galaxy Note, about to Root it, Overclock/Undervolt, etc.
Does anyone know if there's a stock ROM for it floating about, that would make it a hair easier, if not, away we go! Will start a new thread as soon as things are ready, it will probably be an Odin Kernel flash root so note that it will trigger the custom binary counter in Odin, although no ones run into problems with that yet that I know of..

Yes :
Read "HUAWEI MediaPad SD card upgrade user guide.pdf" inside the zip.
Additional info :
This software S7-301u V100R002C232B002 has been tested strictly in Zealand,Singapore,Bengal, and Australia, but network situation is different and complicated in different places.so we can not guarantee that this version is applicable in all countries or regions.
the new super official rom!

You don't really need the Sanixupdate just get Superuser and Busybox from the store and install them. Not sure why it isn't working for you the way you are doing it. I assume you are flashing the ROM before you put the Sanixupdate file on the internal SD.
Any reason not to flash this to the springboard?

If you do flash you will no longer have a Springboard you will have a MediaPad. This is not a bad thing but it will void your warranty. If you take the plunge I suggest you go for the full monty and install the rooted version you can find links to it on one of threads. IMHO it is well worth the upgrade HC sucks in comparison. Good Luck
I downloaded the official release from Huawei's site. I assumed I had to go through the rooting process like the previous leaks? This one isn't pre-rooted AFAIK

Like mentioned by RKWhyte2 it will no longer say Springboard. It will say Huawei Mediapad. It will void the warranty but...
1. No more T-Mobile chimes at start-up. Actually the boot up is way faster now.
2. Hi Suite won't work unless you go hunting for the workaround around here. I've used it once or twice so not a deal-killer for me.
3. You will now be able to send (and receive) text messages (we pay for the privilege, we might as well be able to use it). And the message comes from the number that T-Mobile gave you.
4. TMobile crapware is gone (as long as you have your settings set to back up your apps to google servers, once rooted you will be able to easily retrieve 99% of your apps.)
5. You can delete the sample pictures and videos from the tablet and NEVER. SEE. THEM. AGAIN.
I am enjoying my tablet now more than before. So I guess tonight I will upgrade it to the latest ICS.
already flashed to ICS, now charging it then calibrate the battery
super smooth like slicing a butter
signal works good (depends on your cellular network)

Why don't you just update to the latest version. I find it to be quite stable and haven't found anything bad.
Is this a different ROM to the SP3 one?
Is the touchscreen shaking still?
This official one is the best I have tried so far. No lag in the menus, everything is siilky smooth. Stock browser performance surpasses the beta versions by far and HDMI works correctly with no jagged edges. A job well done I think.
Working HDMI?
You mean landscape mode applications no longer get dithered?
Can you try fpse, the PlayStation emulator on it?
Which ROM do you mean?

[ROOT] VZW Note 2 Root Package

I know what you're thinking "We already have root, why do we want and/or need this?". Well, if you followed the root thread, you would have seen that the package posted was built off of two images. There was the early firmware posting that it was first made from, then a system pull in a rar archive that was used to put the root package on the latest firmware. In the processes, there were issues with permissions and other items missing. The people involved did a great job with what they had, but I don't like hacked up solutions to problems.
So, to fix that, I had a stock system.img for the release firmware. This allowed me to build a fully stock root package with no missing files or incorrect permissions. While it took some time to get this tested and verified working without having the device, I was able to get it. Thanks goes to Adrynalyne, Mibix, and AstainHellBring (and anyone else) from IRC for testing several packages (Freenode, #galaxy-note-2). This is only the start of things to come, and I plan on slowly working on a ROM based on this then. I also made a deodexed version of the same package. Download and flash that if you wish, but it was more to verify that nothing broke in the deodexing process and to get a working base for a custom ROM.

INSTRUCTIONS
Download one of the above packages for flashing.
Extract the file (7zip works to extract).
Open Odin (download that elsewhere), and put the extracted tar.md5 in the PDA spot
(Re)Boot your phone into download mode and plug it in to your computer
With it recognized in Odin, press start
Once the phone boots up, all should be well. If you notice issues, boot into recovery and wipe data and this should fix the problems.
If you still have issues after wiping the /data and performing a factory reset, please post here.
NOTE: I am not responsible for any ill effects caused to you, your loved ones, you phone, or anything else as a result of flashing this. Do so at your own risk as I won't be held responsible.
Saving this one too, just in case.
I'm nuts about imnuts! Its great to have you here! Can't wait for one of your ROMs.
So just for clarification, this is a newer version of system than what the other root package was?
I will probably flash the deoxed version anyone, but just checking.

Same "version" as the last one created by Mr Robinson, just that it was built off of a system.img of the shipping firmware that preserved all permissions on the files. Functionally, this should be basically the same as what was done earlier, just put together in a less hacked up manner.
What would be the advantage of deodexed version?
sent using my apple assassin.

I do believe that's really for doing themes etc. (Makes it easier, that is)
Thank you. I ran your droid charge roms. Do u plan on get a note2?
Oh I wasn't sure if it litened it up or sped it up in any way. Would u see any reason to flash this over or in place of the first one I have now? All seems to be working fine.
What happens to all the mods that we have used on our phone, e.g. replacing files. I have changed my status bar and changed it so I can use MW with all apps.
Is this like the other one where are apps are not deleted?
Could yuo explain the advantages of the deoxed version vs. this one?
I will d/l both to keep on hand and thank you imnuts for putting this together. Does this address the lag with the screen turning on. I did of course wipe cache, etc, etc. when I rooted the first time. Remember kids, always wipe when you're done

Its a true latest rooted system image. You will have to redo all your mods. If your happy with what you have now, I wouldn't worry about it.

It is significantly easier to theme and modify deodexed versions compared to what ships.

If/when I get enough money, yes. For the moment, I have a few people I know that are testing things for me.

If you already have root and/or have done other changes to /system, then there isn't a need to flash this. It is meant more for people that haven't yet rooted. If you have only done root, this shouldn't change anything for you. If you have rooted and made other changes (deleting apps/etc.), then it will undo those changes, and possibly force you to factory reset. Nothing has been deleted from either package, just root and busybox being added.
Deodexed v. stock is mainly for ease of modification. After the first boot, there is no speed difference in the two, though you may save a little bit of storage on the stock version. Functionally, they are identical, just that if one was looking to theme or make other changes, it is easier to do on the Deodexed version. I plan on starting a ROM then, maybe with the help of a few people, and this will start with the deodexed version and will get its own thread if it comes.
Just to answer any future questions, if you're already rooted, you don't need this. It was created as a better starting point for anyone that has not yet rooted their phone.
Thanks for clearing that up imnuts. So seriously though, no performance differences between the two? I find that weird if the permissions are all messed up in the original. I'm planning to root my sister's phone tonight, and it wouldn't be hard for me to do mine again tonight either if there is some reason for it, from the sounds of it, there isn't
Looking forward to your future stuff, +1 anyways.
I may have to try both and see which is is best for future efforts.

Just curious how much money do you already have for the Note 2? I don't know much about you, but I already donated to Adam & Beans, I don't see why we can't help you get the phone as well. I'm willing to donate if we can get a thread together. It only helps the community..

I don't know if there are permissions issues with what was out, but given how it was made, it could be possible that one or two of the items with special permissions was missed, and without hitting a specific usage scenario, you'd never know. I think that given what MrRobinson was working with, he did a great job :good: I haven't actually compared what I have with what was previously out other than to verify that all files were present, I wasn't looking at permissions.
As for what's best for future efforts, it's going to be easier to theme and mod the deodexed version.
I do plan on building a ROM then starting next week, but progress will be slow (this alone took a week to get everything sorted properly).

there is no issues with mrRobinson's root image...that article is misleading. The very first image had issues but was quickly revised and fully functional!
