[Q] Black Screen Blotches! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I got my S2 a couple days back and was watching a movie in a completely darkroom and noticed that the screen wasn't truly black when the title were playing. I initially thought it was an issue with movie so I tested the screen with a pure black screen (*#0*#) and noticed that the screen glowing a tad lighter than black and I had several black patches on the screen. This is extremely annoying when using apps that have a lot of black or when watching movies. the dark patches and streak is also noticeable in the clock app in the dark grey patterned lower area. I have seen this issue mentioned in another post but there is no definitive answer as to whether this problem can be fixed or goes away after some usage. I would just like to know if I should send this in for replacement? What are my other options?
I also noticed that my 3 day old phone already had slight notification bar burn ins and even my google search widget seems to be burning in to the screen. Honestly I am extremely disappointed with these QC issues and this is my second unit as I had the first replaced for other screen issues.

I'd return it now for a NEW replacement, before the time expires. After a certain timeframe, only repair warranty most likely available, and that will probably take longer.
In some cases, it could be only 1 week.

ya I have a 30 day replacement offer so I guess I will be using that. Hope I'm lucky the third time around.

You may already know this, but;
If you send it back and your phone is rooted, custom rom etc, ensure you flash back stock firmware and get a usb jig to reset the samsung custom flash counter and remove warning triangle.

Edit/update
Im on Gingerbread 2.3.3 XWKF3 (India)
If someone could please try this simple test and let me know their results, I would be very grateful.
Test Procedure:
- Find a completely dark room (easier at night)
- goto phone keypad and dial *#0*#
- tap the button that says Black (Vibration)
- now look directly at the screen for a few seconds and let your eyes adjust
At this point do you see?
a) pure black (cannot distinguish btw bezel and screen),
b) an even mild glow, sort of like a backlight
c) a glow along with patches/blotches of pure black?
I see option (c). Could some of you pls do this test and let me know your results. This problem can also be seen, under the same dark conditions, if the clock app is opened. If you have the same problem I have, then you should see dark patches in the grey area.

I tried out before my last reply, but in dim (not dark) conditions, seemed ok.
Now tried as you suggested, and let my eyes adjust for a few second, I can see what your saying.
Maybe this its part of the super amloed + screen?
So in short , I'll take answer C

Maybe more users realise they have through same (or to a degree) , but i suppose if there is no noticeable difference during day to day use (including movies etc), i wouldn't even bother.
In your case, i'd still go with the return for new. No guarantee though...

Photo
Well here's a photo to better demonstrate my issue. It is a little exaggerated by the camera but still pretty accurate. One can also see that the glow has a reddish tint. It was taken with a DSLR in hi res. You can see just how bad it is. Yes this is not that noticeable if the room isn't really dark but it's pretty damn bad in my room with all the lights out. And thats how I usually read at night. I wouldn't even mind an even glow but the splotches are unacceptable.

Ok your screen is clearly a QC fail. Go and exchange it ASAP. The screen does have a faint glow because it needs to be powered, but it should be a VERY faint and even glow perceptible only in pitch black conditions.

Do you use a screen protector? It can be because of that also. Try taking a screenshot by clicking home and power button then looking at the pic on your pc or laptop.

They're artifacts of the screen so you will never see them on a screenshot.

I don't have spots like the picture posted above but there is a line along the screen's perimeter. Is that it? I am getting it all. Whether to ask for a replacement or not.

scratch that ... its still there pink while taking the pictue ... but the actual photo can vary from still being slightly pink to slightly green dipending on light levels.
Only under certain conditions. The same conditions produce pink spots on most camera phones. I saw a celebrity tweet a picture of his new kitchen worktop the other day (dont ask), it was taken with an iPhone 4 and had a big juicy pink spot..
After the HD2 early pink spot issue, which was rather extreme and showed up all the time i learned to counteract it in photoshop, so the rare occasion it shows itself now doesn't bother me.
Does this affect video recording too? Or just taking pictures?
hi guys,
I posted this 5mins ago in another thread, but thought i'd post it here as it may be of some use to anyone coming here, especially with an aptly titled thread such as this..
''for anyone experiencing the 'pink issue'... when you notice it, try changing the white balance setting from auto to the appropriate for your current lighting conditions...
there was a thread i started on the subject, and after numerous tests between myself and others we decided it was down to the auto white ballance setting not keeping up...
for example, if your indoors, with room lights on, and you have the pink area when looking at a white wall or carpet, try switching to incandescent white balance mode... the phone seems to have issues judging the correct white balance level...
mine disappears as expected, so i feel it just requires a little more intelligence behind the auto algorithm on samsungs behalf... if its feasible...
after talking to my friend, a photographer, he explained he's seen this in dedicated digital cameras before in the past, although not so much now, but that is why when taking quality shots you always use the correct settings for the subject and lighting...
sorry for the threadjack, just don't want people feeling like their hardware is letting them down, software can/may fix the issue...''
my thread was posted in a matter of days after the first SGS2's were realeased in the UK, so it been long forgotten now.. lol
heres my old thread, i hope this will be of help to some of you...

Nicely said, nice to see someone do some research before posting something and starting mass histeria.
Here is an example of the pink spot with my old HD2, which was very bad for it initially, until a patch was released.
The first is the original, the second is a quick 30 second correction in photoshop.

As you can see, its easily corrected. If anything i went a bit too far correcting it, but it literally took 30 seconds from opening to saving.
i have green spot on auto and incandescent white balance modes.
In other modes i dont have a green spot.
Is there a known fix for it?
I have the pink spot too, on auto white balance. Maybe it will be fixed in future cam firmwares, i'm bothered more about the 2 clicks that my camera makes whenever i start it or switch to video mode. Do you cameras click twice when you initiate them and when switching to video mode ?
I clicked yes for the poll, but tbh it's so slight that I only get it when taking photos of just white stuff. I can't see that happening enough to bother me. (This is with the camera settings reset to default.)

I noticed that, but i don't know if that's normal behavior, as some users say it isn't and that their cameras don't do that One guy said samsung reps told him to get the phone back for repairs or replacement.
Out of the box, I had this issue and another camera defect: Black spot on the lense
I must be really unlucky that Samsung QC failed in detecting dust specks on the camera... It's really extremely obvious... Sent it back to the service centre for repair...

So do most galaxy s 2s suffer from the black spotting problem?

My phone is great otherwise, and I don't want to risk getting a phone that suffers from something worse. I am still in my 30 day period, so I want to fix any problems while I can.
It doesn't really bother me, and I will probably forget about it soon enough but it was distracting when I first noticed it watching a movie on Netflix.

I took one back because of a dead row of pixels. You can do a screen test by dialing *#0*# in the samsung dialer app and then you can check each color (r/g/b).

I would say that my "blobbing" is a little bit worse than what you see there.
Some are worse than others. On my first SGS2, an entire third of the screen was discolored. The second was worse- a fourth was discolored with lines across the screen. The third one, and the one I kept, only has two small spots on the left side.
If it bugs you, go to the store and get the best one they have.

How exactly do you check for it in the store? The fact that it is only noticeable in dark conditions is hard to check for.
I don't think I'm experiencing these black spotty colors. However...
My first SGS2 had some pixel problems. See image below. That line of pixel shows a higher contrast of whatever is displaying on that row of pixels. It only shows up at certain times when the videos or photos show some color or contrast threshold that activates these problem lines of pixels.
My second SGS2 has a soft (almost) black glow at the bottom on landscape (or left side at portrait) against a completely black background only noticeable at night (like when I'm in bed with the bedroom lights off). This doesn't bother me that much. I'm keeping it.

I don't think I understand what you are talking about on the second picture. When viewing a black background at night my whole screen has a somewhat grey glow to it. The blobs show up as solid black against the grey.

light bleed from the home button

It's only noticeable on black or really dark backgrounds but does everyone else's home button bleed a bit of light into the screen or just mine? I'll see if I can snap a pic tomorrow.
Yupp... Once an led brightness mod is created it should be better.
Yeah noticed this from day one. Mine is not just on the really dark screens either but I think every phone I've ever had has had something like this in one way or another....no biggie.

Do you guys know if this justifies an exchange from BestBuy? I'm just concerned that it may get worse because that's how these things tend to play out over time.

If you have light bleed issues, you should get a replacement. Mine is perfect - zero light bleed. First HTC device I've owned that didn't have at least a little.

you can also download an app from the market that test your screen for dead pixels and it helps find light-bleed as well. I believe it's called Screen test, just type that in the play store and you'll find it.

You have 30 days to do whatever you want with it.
I had light bleed on my first EVO LTE. The light bleed is most apparent when the button lights are on, the screen backlight is at its dimmest setting, and the screen is black. A great way to test is to install the flash-the-brain.com FlashLight app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.flashLight) and swipe down to set it to the dimmest setting. A picture of my first phone and the replacement are below (this was a long exposure in a completely dark room, so it didn't look quite so bad in real life):
I have it also, i didn't always notice it but definitely there at times... must be when the lights are on the buttons like ahecht pointed out
i dont know if it gets worse though, should i exchange?
yeah mine has a light bleed on all black screens as well
mine has light bleeding as well.. i noticed it during a game boot up today.. isn't our 30 days getting close? hmm what to do ...

[Q] Screen problem - not Yellow tint

Hello Everyone,
i bought my Xperia S two months ago. Unfortunately, i got couple of problems but more importantly a screen problem. The problem with the screen is that the colors were displayed differently. I noticed that the moment i turned on the phone the first time. Although i was using the blue theme, when i go to the Dailer or the system settings or other apps, the colors seem yellowish or maybe brownish they just felt wrong. I could see that clearly when i use my keyboard Swiftkey which i have been using since Xperia Arc. The theme colors of the keyboard are displayed different that what they were on the Xperia Arc. Anyways, i took my phone to the Sony service and repair and they fixed it, they told me that the screen problem was a software problem. i took the phone although i was not convinced that it was totally fixed even though the screen got much better. Later on i met my friend who just bought the Xperia S and when i saw his phone i could clearly see the difference. its hard to explain the difference in words but mine was more of yellowish or brownish and in other words the blue factor was not dominating specially with the theme. His phone screen is has more cool colors where mine was very worm. I don't know if this is part of the yellow tint problem they have been talking but keep in mind that i don't have yellow spots, its just that the colors are displayed differently very worm. I dont know if this is a software or hardware problem. Also another thing i noticed in the display is this weird shade in the colors in some areas on many apps i don't know if it is only me or all Xperia s phones but one thing for sure is that i dont see it on my mom's galaxy s2. i will post the picture down but unfortunately i cant post the pictures regarding the display colors issue because when i take a screenshot, the phone actually captures the actual colors of the system rather than what is displayed so i dont know how i am gonna show what i am talking about. i am thinking maybe i will take a picture of the screen using another phone if the pictures were clear and could show the problem.

Hi
First no need to feel bad or sad cause the screen problem youre describing is not a problem at all. Its called warm screen(or something like that). Its totally normal in high end device nowadays, go google some topic about some samsung device or htc or any high-end smart phone and you will see its common. As long as you dont see the yellow tint than there is no need to worry about. My xperia s got the same yellow-ish warm screen just like you(and a yellow gradient at the very bottom). and my sister got one thats appeared to be normal, or some people will describe them as "cool" screen.
And believe me there are many people who got the warm screen version, some just dont care about it some just cant tell or didnt notice at all
Its a hardware version thats normall causing this, go to dial and put in *#*#7378423#*#*
go to service info and check the firmware of your screen. It should be touch firmware 6,
This firmwre 6 is believed to be a revision after the yellow tint devices are reported
But it depends on your luck though, i know a lot of people got version 6 screen but has a normal white screen on their device

Hello buddy thank you so much, finally I know what the he was up with the screen now it makes sense. I can finally rest and not worry or feel that bad that I payed 600$ for thins phone although i prefer the cool screen. The I checked what your told me and it's the firmware version 6. Honestly I wanted to flash my phone to ics but I thought it's better to wait until it's done from the Sony repair Centre, and but after I read your comment I said "what the hell" I could live with that screen. So I didn't take it to the repair store. I instead, I I flashed my phone with ICS and I am lovvvinggg it, it's so delicious I can't spot tasting it. I and quess what..? The color shading problem that I talked about actually went away with the ICS update and I am grad it. I wanted to post screenshots of what I was talking about the but I keep getting error when uploading the pics so i uploaded the on drop box. I you can see the screenshots before and after. so ANYWAYS THANK YOU,

one more thing is that you can find some app to tune the overall color of the screen, like an app called adjust your screen, they have instruction of how to make your warm screen looking normal. I personally do like using the app although people say it consume battery, I haven't noticed any changes in the battery at all (I still get about 15-19hrs a day in average).
weird though the warm tone should not be changing in anyway even flashing or doing soft-toning of the phone cause its the hardware that is causing the problem, but like i said these color preference is always depends on people so I am glad you now feel oky for your screen like i do
I didn't mean the warm tone that was fixed. Oh god my English is bad. I I meant there was another problem other than the worm tone. I dont know how to explain it. I I wanted to post pictures but the forum is giving me errors both on my phone and my laptop I don't know why, but it says contact the administrator!! The forum doesn't even allow me to post the pictures from drop box I don't know why. The other problem I was talking about was related to how many apps on my phone show blurry or unclear shading. you won't understand until you see the pictures. I also I couldn't find the app yo were talking about, there is this app call Screen Adjuster, is this what you were talking about?

Is my screen faulty?

Hello all,
Last night I watched a show on my tablet in total darkness and noticed some weird banding which I thought was caused by the video itself but then I checked with the other apps and it was clear that it wasn't the video but the screen itself. Is my tab screen faulty? It's just over 3 weeks old for God's sake! Is anyone else experiencing the same issue or am I the only one?

those look like window reflections. Make a drawing, fill the entire screen with solid black, do you still see the banding? Do you have blue light filter on? If you still see it and you don't have any filters and you're sure it's not reflections, return it.

I watch on mine in dark, complete black the screen is, no bleed etc.
Return it.
Hmmm I'm noticing similar to mine now even without blue light filter and normal brightness
Hey guys. Just an update. It's a bit of a long story but the tl;dr version is that I have got a new Tab S6 today and guess what? The same screen-bleed issue but on a different part of the screen.

I phoned the Samsung shop team and they were extremely helpful and arranged a replacement. However, I am very disappointed with the quality control. Does anyone know how I can raise this with Samsung so that something would be done at a higher level i.e. maybe there is a faulty batch or something?
Is that right from a factory reset without installing or restoring any apps? I have to wonder at this point if it's some software, These are amoled screens, there shouldn't be any bleed, there's no backlight. While some pixels can definitely fail what you're seeing on 2 tablets seems highly unlikely not random across the screen. Only other thing I can think of is you have something putting undue pressure on parts of the screen.

No. The pictures above are of the replacement tablet. I hadn't had the chance to transfer my settings or anything so it's factory formatted. All I did was turn on night mode at night and start the dialer app as well as other Samsung apps. Even the keyboard is brighter on one side than the other. I asked the other half to look and point out anything odd and she spotted it straightaway.
The tablet was literally out of the box. Barely stayed out of the box for an hour and there was nothing else pressed against it at all.

It's not bleed it's just uneven tints on the screen, very common and annoying as heck.
wow I've never seen anything like that on an oled or amoled screen. I have the S2,S3, S4, note 8, note 10+ and LG Oled and never seen anything even close.
What you have with the white, doesn't surprise me as much as the black as with black the pixels should be OFF.
The mate 20 pro was plagued with green screens like that. I believe they were lg oleds

By the way it's not pure black backgrounds, more dark greys, mine is similar and I believe they will all have it to some degree, seems to be a short coming with oled..it's only noticeable when displaying certain types of greys, at very low brightness, even worse with blue light filter on
Somewhat similar to what I'm experiencing, uneven black levels from corner to corner.
I'll try and get a replacement from the retailer, they give 30 days to return items so it shouldn't be an issue hopefully.
It's not awful, but once you notice it, you always notice it.
I have also the same, verry annoying. And for that price i espect something that works.
