I think I got a broken S2.... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I rooted it the second I bought it and then tried to make a call...no sound from either end. Spent a few hours messing around, figuring it was a bad root or kernel. Ended up going back to bone stock....still no sound.
I'm going to unroot and reflash stock for the 4th time but I think I just happened to get a defective phone.
Anyone else experience this or think it's something else?

Thats why I always test the basics of a phone before I do anything to it (make calls, check the screen and casing, check loud speaker...) It takes just a few minutes and can save you the hassle of having to flash back to stock to take it in.
Id say that you have a defective phone it you flashed back to stock and it still has no sound.

You have a defective phone my friend. I had the exact same problem with the first phone that I bought. I took it right back to at&t and they exchanged it without give me any hassle.

Had the same problem but mine seemed intermittent. Took it back to best buy, exchanged it and this one seems to be solid. I can't complain...dual core awesomeness for 120 off contract lol

[Q] Samsung Kies Update Leads to Hardbick

The title basically explains the problem. I was having a bunch of issues with custom roms on my phone...lack of cell service, very laggy. I figured it was best to ODIN to stock then update via Kies to stock 2.2 and save myself any further hardship by keeping stock if I was actually getting reception.
The installation/update went perfectly okay then after 10 minutes of letting it sit, I attempted to turn it on...nothing. Unlikely but I thought maybe the battery was dead so I left it plugged in for a little while longer, still nothing. Realizing that on FroYo the green charging screen would come up when the phone wasn't actually on, I thought the worst...hardbricked. The phone simply won't turn on at ALL.
Since coming to this conclusion a couple hours ago I've attempted numerous/every combination of buttons to get back into Download mode but no go. At this point I'm fishing for any kind of solution to this problem. I bought my Vibrant off of Craigslist so I'm not sure if the warranty is still valid. Also I can't simply exchange the phone because of my FFC. My original camera is back at school, where I won't be for another week or so.
Anyone with any kind of solution or advice, I beg of you to speak up.

if you've tried everything then thats the only thing that'll get it working again
i hard bricked mine when odin froze and tried everything for a week but nothing worked then i took mine to a local phone shop and they fixed it in like a day
i think kies has a history of causing hard bricks, theres a stock 2.2 by Whitehawkx you could have used instead of using kies
Seems like ur on the right track. Only other suggestion would be to try a jig to get into download mode before you go the jtag route. Probably what ur gonna have to do tho. Good luck!
Send it back to Samsung. That happened the other day to me (exactly what you did) and they sent me a new one. 5 bucks.

[Q] Phone won't turn on?

Hi, uh I started another thread on making sure things got backed up. Which I did properly and everything was good. So today I haven't done anythign and was waiting for the new slim rom to make it's debute hopefully this week sometime as that is the one that appeals to me the most. Anyways, today my phone just got super hot, far hotter than before and it decided to die on me...I think. it shut off and I haven't been able to turn it on. Could this be a side effect of installing twrp/unlocking the bootloader/rooting? Or would it be a defective unit? One concern I had was getting a defective unit so i waited out my 30 days before even considering doing all this. So yea my 30 days from att is up. Would there possibly be a way to get a new phone from att or does anyone have any tricks on getting it back online? I personally think it was an overheating issue, but my phone is now cooled down.
So i went to the att store and of course they won't do anything. They told me to call some number they gave me. If I return it will they know it was boot unlocked and rooted? I can't turn it on at all. Using a power source or connecting to my computer nor my car charger...

Ok, so, im not sure if by return you mean, return for an exchange or simply a return as ATT will probably only send you a reman unit for yours and not allow an actual return. If you havent called them yet, i would recommend it. I have dealt with them many times in the past and one thing that has always shocked me is that they never have asked me about, or even commented on, how rooting or unlocking prevents them from exchanging it. Even during the disclaimer, they have never once said that if the device has been modified they wont allow the exchange.
I say all of this because should they not mention anything like that, and you send it back, im fairly sure you can claim you didnt know and werent told, and they will take care of it. Also, i say this because i personally sent back 3 bricked GS2s and an lg nitro as defective and got my reman units and every single one of them were rooted and such. So, i would feel safe. As long as they dont ask, and you dont lie to them, then there shouldnt be an issue. I wouldnt lie to them, i just dont mention it. AGAIN DO NOT lie to them or attempt to decieve them, i would never encourage that, but if its something they dont ask about, then, it, in my opinion, is not something that they are too concerned with.

Okay, thanks for the response. Sorry I was in a bit of a panic when I wrote that. But I have called ATT and they didn't ask me or mention in any disclaimer that if it's rooted or unlocked it won't qualify. I didn't mention it and so that does make me feel a lot better. Hasn't been physically damaged or come in contact with water so i'm pretty sure I'm safe. Thanks again.

They may or may not check when you return the phone. I returned my S3 a few months ago in exchange for a different phone but I forgot to unroot it and uninstall Superuser. The representative at AT&T didn't even turn the phone on. I didn't have anything to hide though, if they told me I couldn't return it because it was rooted then I would have sold it and purchased something else. I think the manufacturer is the one to worry about with these things. LG would definitely know if it were unlocked and they would be able to determine if rooting and unlocking the phone caused the problems you described.

Well if they can turn it on I will gladly take it back due to them not accepting. I couldn't turn it on by anymeans, even plugging it in there is no lights to signifying it is receiving power. But i heard this phone had overheating issues in the first wave (or two) so it's probably for the best to get a new one. They are currently mailing me a new one and so I should receive it next week sometime hopefully.

im in the same boat as you... completely dead phone. But I did open it to see of the battery pull would work. Do you think that theyll check and refuse my warranty because I opened it? the phone on the outside is NEW. Btw do you have a contract/account with ATT? I bought mine off ebay and used it on tmo...
I have the exact same problem! Totally dead phone that the charging light won't even turn on for. Unfortunately there is a small crack in the bottom left of the phone that was caused months prior so ATT wont give me a new one...
send it for repairs! I had rooted and unlocked mine so ATT didnt cover my warranty, but I only paid 50 bucks for the repairs and now I have my phone back!

[Q] Amaze got wet. Need help.

My girlfriend liked my HTC Amaze and bugged me until I bought her one. It was a used Amaze I found on Craigslist. It has worked fine for almost a year. She's been having some really weird problems with it and I was planning to dig into fixing it for her. HOWEVER, night before last she dropped the dang phone in a cup of soda. She did get it out almost immediately and took it apart and dried everything off. I'm not too sure she let the phone dry very long, I wasn't there.
Now the phone boots just fine and all the apps appear to work. However, it gets NO BARS. It doesn't matter where we are. I can have 5 bars and 4G connection and her phone shows nadda. So we took the phone in to T-Mobile for some help. The guy was a lot of help and spend a lot of time working with the phone. He even switched sim cards. But eventually he discovered that the phone has been rooted. DANG!!!! So that got dropped quick. Now I have to figure this out for myself.
I really need some suggestions. Obviously the antenna has been affected, right? I have done my research and have learned that the phone actually connects to the back cover to obtain a connection. So I will be double checking that as soon as I get my hands on the phone again. What else should I do?
The android version is now v2.?. We've been trying to update it to v4 and it never would download. Now we know why. I want to restore the phone back to the stock configuration and upgrade the OS but there's no use in that unless I can take care of the connection problem.
Please, please, please someone help me. Otherwise I'll have to go out and buy a new Galaxy III for her. I can't afford that right now.

lol your title sounds a lil hahaha anyway all the signal antenna's are in the back door so try a new backdoor?? mite work ther're plenty in ebay
You can try a new back cover, but tbh, my guess is that it's probably not the problem. When it got wet it probably shorted something out or something. You have to take the battery out immediately, every .01 seconds count. And i wouldnt put the battery back in for like 2 days. Whenever mine gets wet I take out the battery then I try and suck out all of the water or whatever liquid out of the device as I can. Then ill let it sit in the sun for a while. I always waut at least 24 hourse before putting it back I

Yeah, that's certainly what I would have done. Unfortunately I wasn't there when it happened. She claims she immediately got it out. But she was falling asleep when it fell in so I really don't know. She did immediately take it apart and dry it off. But I don't think she was so anxious about it she put it back together to see if it would work. That probably did more damage than getting it wet in the first place.
We both have the same phone. I took the back off my Amaze and still have a good signal. It may have dropped one bar but not completely. It may get a boost on the signal from the back cover but it still works without. So I agree it probably is not going to be fixed by simply replacing the back cover. I'm going to stick my back cover on it this evening just to see what happens, but I think I know.
I am going to research the possibility of replacing the antenna completely. It seems the next logical option. I may also go ahead and take it further apart just to give it the opportunity to dry out. We'll see.
Any further comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You are absolutely right!! LOL.. If it weren't for the cost of replacing the danged thing I would still be laughing. Why is it she wants ME to replace it and hasn't even suggested that SHE should be the one to replace it THIS TIME?????? She is on one of those pay as you go accounts. We were ready to set her up with a 2-year deal just to find they don't exist at T-Mobile any more. You pay full price for any phone now regardless of what sort of account you set up. I don't see doing that for quite a while.
I may be searching eBay for a replacement phone. But I'd like to try a few options with this one first.

if she dropped it in soda, get some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. clean the contacts very thoroughly. the soda is sticky and can prevent proper contact,
also clean the SIM card contacts on both the card and the phone.
Working Now
I cleaned the back of the phone and the cover this morning with rubbing alcohol then stuck my SIM and SD cards in the phone this morning and turned it on. To my amazement it is now working. What a great sigh of relief!!!!! I have heard nothing but moaning and groaning over this cheap phone I bought my girl until I could resolve this.
So it's off to phase 2 of this adventure. According to the T-Mobile store this phone has been rooted. I've read about it but I know close to nothing about rooting phones. There seems to be as many DIY pages describing how to root or restore a cell phone I am a bit reluctant to get started.
What do I need to look for in restoring this phone? Do I have to find the restore file that matches the Android version on the phone or can I just get the absolute latest one? Which one of these abundance of instructional should I be looking for? What is this about S-On/S-Off? It seems to be important. How do I actually check to verify that this phone has been rooted? I'm just going by someone's comments here.
I'd like to get this completed today. I'm expecting SIGNIFICANT appreciation this evening if I can hand her a working smart phone!!!!
My most enthusiastic and humble appreciation to those who responded. :good:
Been doing some investigations. The phone has super user installed in the aps. It also has 4ext installed. I let the phone download the latest ICS but the install failed.
According to "most" off the forums I have read all I have to do is place the stock image on the root of the external SD card and reboot. Is there anything else I need to worry about?

The lack of patience is why I didn't wait more than a day before sending it lol. I'll keep ya posted for sure. If it works, i'll tell you exactly what I did to mess it up as bad as I did.
I think you'll be fine. Like three years ago when I was a android rookie I had brick my vibrant and couldn't figure out how to fix it. It was rooted and bricked and I couldn't fix it so I said **** it and I sent it to samsung on the hopes they wouldn't discover my unlawfulness. Well two weeks after I got it back fresh in a new box. Perfectly fixed.
Also one time I had an iPhone 3gs that was jailbroken but the screen was broken and wouldn't recognize any touching on it. So I just handed it to the guy and he couldn't slide to unlock it to check it out so they gave me a refurbished one without even checking if I had messed with it. Got lucky on both days I guess haha :good:

I sent mine out monday morning, got there today. Its already fixed and being sent out today, should be back by monday.I soft bricked mine trying to achieve root and it wouldn't boot passed the samsung galaxy mega statup. They fixed with just a stock firmware update, which I could of done myself if I had the stock odin firmware tar file,o well at least it ffixed and ill have it back within 7 days, not bad thought it would take at least two weeks

Maaaaaaan I've been checking on this crap every day lol. On Friday afternoon I got a call saying that my LCD was damaged and had to be replaced. That fee was $200, but I raised hell for like 30 minutes telling them to just use my old LCD because it still worked and I just wanted my phone reflashed. Needless to say, my LCD was replaced free of charge and that I should have my phone back by Friday 11-1-13 or before. This was on Friday and I called yesterday and they couldn't tell me anything because there were no updates in the system. I checked today and still no updates in their system.
Side note: Did you see a message in Kies saying that the firmware was now available for our device? I swear I saw something to that effect the last time I got on my computer. Would that help you out at all?
ODIN flashable firmware is my last hope, i suspect it will work, but only time will tell. I keep searching, checking sammobile, but nothing yet.
I'm to the point where I am holding off on buying car mods to do this winter because I have a sinking feeling I will be buying a new phone in the near future.

[Q]Multiple issues with camera failure, volume button, and random crashes

Alright so lets start with the basics. This phone has been rooted (cf auto root) and still contains factory recovery. All these issues popped up at the exact same time, Saturday morning.
1.) The volume control (not just button, but also in the software side to load it up) will lag for about 30 seconds and nothing is responsive except for the power button. If I hit the power button I will be in a loop for about 2 minutes of the screen staying black with the buttons lighting up. But the button works perfect in recovery.
2.) The camera has server connection issues or pops up with the camera failed issue. Once when i was exiting the camera during one of its laggy moment to try and load the image portion (the software buttons would load sometimes but the "view finder" wont) of the camera and the camera actually popped up for a second or two as I hit the home button to exit it and has only done this once. For this I tried clearing cache and data which did not fix it.
3.) Most programs (stock apps or 3rd party) randomly crash including system.
I also tried loading in safe mode before the reset which just told me it was not a 3rd party based issue.
I have already performed a factory reset and wiped cache but has not fixed this. Is the hardware actually messed up or is there some random chance that the software is just so messed up that even the reset will not fix it? Cat logs needed?
I left the S3 for power button failure and don't want another hardware issue (had it for 2 years before the button failed).
TIA
***New issue***
4.) Now lockscreen is hardly letting me load into the phone.
I think I'm just going to go to the store and throw this phone at someone.
Go into a store and get it replaced. Hope that they don't check knox.

Yeah I would. If I pay $700 for a phone it better work properly or I'm going to keep exchanging it.

Went to the store with it rooted and had to go home to unroot it, after that the paperwork was started. They are overnighting a phone out to arrive Tuesday. The problems just keep popping up too, can no longer send message or make phone calls. I had the phone for 26 days so I was still in the grace period for buying the warranty, which I now did and the cost of replacement is only $5. I think I was unable to buy a warranty on day one due to some bs with plan changes (I was on an ancient plan with unlimited data and zero throttling for cheap back from when the Vibrant came out). My brother who also got an S5 a week later on the same plan was unable to buy a warranty as well for the same reason.
The only thing I did not do was odin a stock rom but with the cheap cost I figured it was worth it to just get a new phone. This phone has come into contact with many chemicals (had a pocket full of powdered sanitizer that broke open all over me) and plenty of barley dust so I figured why not just exchange.

I would bother if it's just a matter of stock odin flash then everything comes back to normal, you can never know if next device would be defective or not, will you replace AGAIN ?

Yeah, see the chemical thing would have been good to mention in the OP.

Was mostly just powdered sanitizer and none got inside the case. And at the same time, my Vibrant and S3 were both in the same work environment. I wonder if the phone can handle falling in beer....
