[Q] Recomended email app - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Anyone recommend a "one size fit all email app" like the iphone, for Att S2?
I'm using Exchange, yahoo, gmail. I have lots of folder in my exchange mail and the stock Mail is sux.
Moxier mail is good but only have 1 email acc. I need an app that can put all mails in one place and showing folders instead of coupel apps for emails.
Thanks

I use Gmail for all of my accounts. I set Gmail up to retrieve (pop) mail from my Yahoo account and my other email address forwards to Gmail. I have labels set up, which allows me to organize it. I've been doing this for a while and it works really well.

What about Exchange, all folder will show or i have to go settings and choose specific folder to view? it's a pain in the bu.. . I really like the way iphone's emails handle.

I've never used Exchange, but if you were able to successfully configure it for pop retrieval, it'd work just as your other email addresses, in terms of how you view them (outlined below). Otherwise, perhaps forwarding is an option. For the email address I have forwarding, I set up filters (scans incoming emails for defined rules) to apply labels (e.g., when the sender or recipient is ______, apply this label). It's something you'd have to toy around with, but I've gotten mine set up pretty well.
All emails would show in your Gmail account inbox (with labels on each one, if you've done this) and you have the ability to specifically select a label to only see mail with that label. This is something you can do online or on your device via the Gmail app (viewing individual labels). I've tried just about every email client and I've found that this method is what works best for me.
Good luck.

I was set up like this as well for quite some time - and it worked well. Recently switched to using maildroid, which I like, but haven't customized to get more functionality than I had with gMail yet...

What's wrong with the stock mail client? Seems really nice to me. Should support all of those account types and you can switch folders very easily.

Back in my Captivate days, I found the stock email client to be unreliable. Ever since then, I've been avoiding it.

The problem is with stock email. My folders didn't go in order some + subfolders.... Moxier mail gives exactly the folder in order like the outlook also display the number for new email....like the MS Outlook in computer.
I just reinstalled Moxier mail and use stock mail for yahoo, gmail also. Oh well, no choice

Touchdown is a pretty good one, but you have to pay for it.

I used to use enhanced email on my cappy

The stock email client is very nice and seems to work very well with Exchange. From what I've seen so far:
1) Tasks will sync
2) Folders are supported, much nicer and easier than with the Captivate
3) Flags are supported
4) Various display options such as first line preview, threaded emails, etc
5) Out of Office settings can be made from phone.
6) You can search emails on the server, not just those on your phone
7) In landscape it'll do a preview pane on the right-hand side. Not bad.
Try it, you've got nothing to lose. Seems pretty nice so far. The only thing I am missing is the ability to "check" multiple emails and take an action on a group of them (e.g., delete them all). You need to do it one-by-one. But so far it works well.

Anybody know if the stock email client can be set up for "push only" so it doesn't poll every x minutes for new mail?

Another vote for enhanced email. You can bypass exchange security rules

Enhanced Email is what youre looking for. I'm a huge Exchange user and this program easily integrates and works just like it does on iphone. You can choose which folders to keep in sync and it will notify you whenever a new message arrives in sub-folders.

The only problem I have with the stock email app is that you can't "Select All" and delete. That capability, and the ability to forward emails by clicking on several contacts and adding them , as the stock program does, are two features I really like; however, I can't find an email program that has both capabilities.

I installed Enhance email. However, it looks alike stock mail (may be I haven't explorer it much). I do like Moxier mail because it's giving me the interface just like Outlook (folder is in order same as my work laptop). Unfortunately, Moxier mail only have 1 account. Wish i can add other acc then it should be PERFECT

Why is there an email and gmail

Exactly as the subject states. I get notifications for both, And honestly, the Gmail app sucks anyways, as it doesn't sync with my email for quote awhile.
You can disable your Gmail account from syncing on gmail, but you can't delete it as far as I know. You can also uninstall the app from root explorer, but I don't know the precautions of that since the market depends on a gmail account. It would be safe to backup.

I agree. The push notification works better than the stock app. I only use gmail, so its not an issue. That's not to say I don't have a hotmail, live, and yahoo email address, just that I only USE gmail.
The gmail app let's you label, archive and choose which folders sync how long. The stock email client doesn't do any of that.

All I can say is the Gmail App is great, however, I have not used the stock samsung email client as the last time I used it, sucked big time, some email clients *old eudora especially when I first got my Samsung Captivate last year* were getting gibberish from sending e-mails. I use MailDroid Pro and Gmail.. Since upgrading to the i777, I am still using maildroid pro and gmail app. I even get gmail messages in maildroid because of the ease of deleting messages I don't want to see!
HTH,
Charlie
personally, i like having separate notifications via separate apps for my exchange email and gmail... it works better for me that way.
Because the gmail app blows away the stock email app when used with gmail... Since I only use gmail, the other email app is one of the first things I nuke.

Really?
Man, I use GMail too, but the app for it sucks for me. It doesn't update everything nearly as quickly as the stock email client.
1. If I delete emails from my inbox (from a computer or something) it takes hours before it shows up in the GMail app, and vice versa as well.
2. It doesn't refresh the emails on launch, it seems to be quite random (and in the range of a few hours late anyway)
I can see how the stars and folder would be nice, though I don't use them. But still, the intense delay in communication really bugs. Or is it just me?

Apparently, it's just you.
Mine updates fine. I use both. The Gmail for the phone stuff and the other for work exchange email.
My gmail app is great as well. it updates quickly. you may want to check your settings.
i agree with the two above me... for gmail, when i read/delete an email from my computer the notification/email is gone from my phone within 5 seconds.
Don't Feed the Trolls!
Both Gmail and Stock email sucks, IMO. :Q
Gmail client
1. The biggest problem is, it only supported gmail. Everyone has several email accounts, don't you ? Then, you would need at least two email clients to read all of them.
2. No pinch zoom. Sometimes, the emails (in HTML format) exceeds the width of display, so you move to the right side to see them.
3. Sync is sometime slow, as indicated by other posts. I have encounter slow sync several times.
4. When composing new emails, it will prompt you matched recipients after you typed few letter. But, I would have to have an option to pick from Contact app.
Stock email
Most of let downs are due to Exchange support
1. In my corporate Exchange, I setup rules so that incoming emails will be moved to various folders. The stock email can only sync Inbox folder. You have to select that folder(e.g. "My other folder"), the email app will then refresh. But, it does not sync, as such, no notifications.
2. No "delete all" in Trash folder
3. In list view (the screen show preview of emails), to delete an emails, you need to press the email and hold it for few seconds. Then you select "delete". This is non-intuitive design. Gmail uses checkbox, and iPhone uses swipe delete.
4. Then, I feel there is "lag" when deleting the emails. Sometime, right after deleting the emails, the email app paused for few seconds before the app became responsive again. It's because the app is trying to refresh with server. But, it should do so in the background process. iOS's email is definitely much more responsive in this regard.
5. Similar to gmail, there is no way to pick recipients from Contact. You have type few letters, then you can pick from matched list. Don't get me wrong, picking from matched list is good. But, sometimes I just cannot recall recipient names. So bringing-up Contact app to pick recipients will definitely help.
How do you disable the gmail account from syncing (in the stand alone gmail app)?

Choosing delete from a context menu is very intuitive; I think what you mean to say is that is it not efficient. To delete multiple emails in a list view, just press MENU, choose DELETE, and then check off as many emails to delete as you'd like.

Well, it's probably me. At first, I did not know press-and-hold will bring up the context menu. That's why I think it's unintuitive.
But, you are right that I also meant that it's not efficient.
Overall, IMO, the Email/Contact/Calendar apps leave much to be desired , comparing to Blackberry's and iOS'.
Crap you guys were right, it was setup to update several hour's away by default, rather than emails 30-minute. But even after activity it wouldn't refresh in the background.
I am really glad I stirred up good conversation here, seeing everyone's points. Thank you all for your replies
Also, no troll here.
anyways, I decided to just get a paid email apparently that is pretty good, so we will see how that goes.

No much difference btween stock and Enhanced email. They both suck to handle folders. Also EE have less of sync schedules compare to stock
If you need an exchange email. I recommend Moxie Mail. Show folders in order + show new email indicators at the corners.

And the stock Touchwiz e-mail app won't delete e-mails from any of my IMAP servers. EE does it flawlessly. I just wish the UI was a little cleaner and professional. Some of the graphics are blurry and the oval "processing" icon isn't sized correctly, so it gets cropped on the sides when rotating.

First, EE don't show Exchange SUB-folder in order also you have no way to know the sub-folders got new email or not unless you click to open that sub-folder(just like stock email). Enlightened me how please?
Second, EE sync have exacly sync schedule as stock BUT don't even have OFF-PEAK schedule (days) like stock. Show me where to use OFF PEAK schedule in EE too please?

It's the graphics, not text formatting. It looks fine on devices with a smaller display, but because it's enlarged on the Note it makes the bitmap graphics blurry. Changing the formatting options did nothing for me but change the way the text looks. It's not that bad, I'll deal with it. I'm just glad I can delete my e-mails, lol.

ok I guess we use email 2 totally different ways. Considering I am the Manager over Network Operations and also the exchange server administrator over the corporation yeah I would think I do use exchange email.
You are correct on both accounts you dont get email alerts for sub-folders and cant set peak and off peak times but it does give you more scheduling options outside of that than the stock email app.
I usually dont put anything important in subfolders under my email box and allow my outlook client to sort into PST files when I launch my outlook client. This keeps the size of my exchange account smaller and its to me a pain in the ass to figure out which folder I am getting alerted on so it really dont matter to me about sub-folder email alerts. If I want to see if a particular email has been received I usually just go to that folder and look for it.
As for the peak non peak times I am not even interested in getting that granular with the schedules in the least as I need my emails about the same whether its 10pm or 10am my job doesnt dictate when I dont need emails as regular.
my comment to you wasnt to start a pissing match with you btw.
All I want to know is, HOW CAN I OPEN THE STOCK EMAIL APP SHOWING THE ACTUAL EMAILS versus the account screen first?

Sorry for being a crazy nut. I wasn't start any pissing match at all . I was disappointed with EE because i spend 10 bucks and it's just the same as stock (in my oppinion). For my Exchange email, a have lots of sub folder category that needed for my work and those need to show me if I get new emails. Also for sync schedule i just see 15m, 30m 1h, 4h... in EE exactly same as stock with no peak hours and selected day(I don't want to have push emails when i'm home (4 hours sync maybe). So Moxie Mail solve my problem: show sub-folder in correct order and sync/show my new mail in sub folder.

Hey there, I'm the developer of Enhanced Email and long time XDA member/contributor. Regarding your sub-folder issue, it sounds like you don't know how to enable sync on sub-folders from my app. You just long-press on any sub-folder and select "Toggle sync" from the context menu that appears. You'll begin receiving notifications for those folders now when new mail arrives.
Regarding the "folder hierarchy" issue, that is in the works. Technically, if you set up an IMAP account the folder hierarchy shows just fine. It only shows the list of folders flat for Exchange accounts due to Exchange not providing the tiered name in the folder properties like IMAP does. You have to actually create the tiered name by matching folder IDs to their names and following parent IDs till you reach the root folder. It's a mess but like I said it's in the works.

I believe it's called Moxier Mail, not Moxie. Just trying to make it easy for folks to find it. Not picking.

Hotmail with Exchange ActiveSync

Simply put, trying to get my Hotmail account working on my Note has been a nightmare. I've tried every app I can find and none seem to work with anything other than POP3. The stock eMail client on ICS 4.0.4 *kinda* works with the exchange server, with the problem of having to scroll to the bottom of every single eMail and click on "Load More Details". The way it handles combined view is also clunky and awkward. This is obviously unacceptable. Is this fixed in JB? Do I need to install a custom ROM? I read that the HTC Sense-based ROMs don't have this issue. All I want is to have IMAP/Exchange access to both my Hotmail and GMail accounts smoothly running in one app, and for some reason it's damn near impossible.
Nobody knows how to get email running properly on Android? For something that is so simple on an iPhone, Google/Samsung have really dropped the ball on one of the most basic and universal requirements of a smartphone.
Have you tried maildroid?

Try K9mail. Its free. It also does IMAP too.

i just use the stock email app. the yellow one. works fine since gingerbread
Tried Maildroid. Tried K9. Hotmail will only work as POP3, I've tried every setting possible for IMAP or Exchange and it just doesn't work. Stock eMail works with Exchange but I have to scroll to the bottom of the message through all the HTML code and click "Load More Details" on every email before I can read it. Apparently this is a new safety feature in Samsung products, possibly starting (and ending?) with ICS, I'm not entirely sure, but it stinks. My only option appears to be using separate dedicated clients for Hotmail and Gmail. The grouping is also clunky with "combined view" in the stock eMail app, requiring 3 clicks and scrolling to the bottom of each message in order to read a single Hotmail message. Insane.
Can anybody verify if the "Load More Details" issue is fixed in any or all of the JB roms? This seems to be an issue isolated to newer Samsung phones running ICS and it's hard to find any info on it.

Hmmm. I don't have to scroll.to the bottom and hit load more details on mine. Get 20 - 50 emAils a day through exchange. Have you checked your settings? There is one for a size limit that my be causing your problem.
I will check and see what it is.

Tried that already, doesn't work. Still need to click on "load more details" for every single email. Like I said, I read somewhere that this is a new security feature and we're supposed to just deal with it. Something about how they don't want images to be autoloaded because it confirms to phishers that the email has been viewed. I'd like to know if this is also the case with custom roms, or is it just a security "feature" from Samsung? Also, exchange is not working properly, seems that even the stock email is acting as POP3. Again, this is for Hotmail, which as I understand is more complicated to configure than other services because of the limitations by Microsoft or something.
I would appreciate any input from people that have experienced this issue, especially if they found a fix. I was trying to avoid rooting my phone and flashing a custom ROM but this may just be the tipping point...
I use enhanced email. When you set up the account, enter your email address and password and select "manual setup"
On the set up screen make sure for iser name you use your email address for the server use m.hotmail.com
Just follow the rest of the setup and you will have it
It is a paid app, but ir works with no worries. I have my corporate mail, live mail and outlook.com mail set up as push and it works great.
Hope this helps

Im currently using Gmail app, but i wanted to ask for your oppinion.. Im in dillema between gmail app and stock email app for @gmail.com mails..

In stock email you can attach all types of files. Which is impossible in gmail app that offer to attach only a video or a picture.

Other than that ? Can you decrease font in stock app ?
i use stock app because of other site's mail account.
but using gmail app seems to be nice, too
stock has support for air view (awesome), multiple accounts (gmail, yahoo, aol, etc), nice widget
Well, one thing that is keeping me off the stock is following :
I have student email on my university... And i merged that with gmail acc, and it is set up on gmail account so when i go compose new on gmail i can choose from which account to send... I cant do that on stock email app
R: Stock e-mail vs Gmail app
I have attached several times non-video, non-photo files, just using total commander as backend.

I don't get much time to play with my phone, but if I had time I'd uninstall that crappy Gmail app.
I can't say a single advantage of it over the stock email app. I like the email sent notification of stock email app if that's an advantage, I like smooth multi touch it provides, I like how the body of an mail is formatted and so on so on...
That update of Gmail app have saved it from at least 10000 uninstallation, if that's the word, Lol.

You've gotta be kidding me right?
Gmail 4.2.1 is the very definition of smoothness.
Stock email app is choppy as hell, even in this monster of fast and smooth phone.
Don't get me wrong, with the new MA5 update, stock email is much smoother than before, but still pales in comparison to Gmail

Two differences that I know of:
1. The gmail app syncs chats but the stock email app doesn't.
2. The email notification generated by gmail when a user receives a ping when he or she is offline is synced by the gmail app but not by the stock app.

Hi
How to remove or disable gmail app? i dont want to use it
I came from iPhone and i've noticed problems in both apps.
- Gmail: No unified inbox, conversation view can be better (like iOS stock Mail app)
- Mail: No conversation view at all (and it's definitely not a good thing) and no push mail from gmail
In my daily usage i use gmail for the push service and the conversation view. But i think that iOS mail app and Gmail for iOS are better.
I've used all the other mail clients for Android and every app has some problem.

You can use the m.google.com exchange server, although I don't know how much longer that will exist.
I hate the black background on Stock Email, if you driving in car you will have problems to read, that is better on white background wit black fonts like on gmail app! So i would like only getting white background on stock mail app! Everything elese works (but surely, on my HTC ONE X) it`s much smoother! I´m on Omega 11 in moment!

I hate conversation view and that's why I disabled it in Gmail settings, maybe that's why I don't see conversation view in Gmail app as well. How do you enable conversation view in Gmail app?
And the stock email app has an option of conversation view. You can see it by pressing menu. However I don't know what it does as I haven't used it yet.
And the email client in iOS is way better than any Android client I've ever used.

You could use 'negative colours' under Accessibility. It'll make the background white. Just make a shortcut of Accessibility option which is accessible via Post key.
Also you could use the lighter email text mod of Xposed, not bad.

You can attach any file type in gmail.
If you have a file explorer installed, click attach picture, choose your file explorer as the method and then pick the file you want.
A bit dumb that you have to do it that way but it works. Lol.
I use each alternatively depending on who I'm emailing.
Also my gmail pushes mail just fine

I personally disabled the stock email app and replaced it with Aqua Mail.
I find it perfect for what I need.
Gmail app only has a problem: can´t attached all file types, so I´m using both aplications; gmail app only with gmail account and stock email with hotmail account to attached all file types.

Looking for Email App?

I'm looking for an email app that will do (be) the following:
- Be able to handle multiple gmail accounts
- Be able to handle an exchange account
- Be able to view all emails in a "combined" way (maybe delineated by color, etc...)
- Be able to "push" all emails (not just exchange)
- Be easy to set up
- Be aesthetically pleasing (I know this is a matter of personal preference - that's why it's at the bottom of the list).
- Oh and "free" would be nice
I realize that this sounds a lot like the stock email app but I can't use that one, for reasons too long to go into here...
Thanks,
I'm not sure it can do enterprise, but try looking at K9.
I use Aqua mail pro... Does the trick for me

Hey bro. Happy Thanksgiving.
Look what I found in the general apps thread. Looks promising.
Edit: I tested it, and it works as promised. Through my Exchange 2010 account, Google Apps for business IMAP address and a pop3 account into the mix, and everything syncs quickly, supports push for all 3, combined inbox, looks nice.
