Dude why is this phone so crappy?....I've had enough - Motorola Photon 4G

had this phone for like 17 days now.
Rooted it. Use the wifi teather app alot but thing is it ALWAYS get hot, hot enough to cook eggs. Either that or it just randomly restarts. OR wifi teather lose connection so I have to restart it which is a sign that the phone will restart in a few more minutes....let's see what else, I have a car charger that went for a ATT phone but it works on the Photon thing is it doesn't even charge the phone. Here I am %5 battery left when getting off work so I hop into my car plug the phone up so it appears charging right? but soon as I get home and disconnect the phone it turns off with%0 whatttttt!! and one more thing that crappy keyboard. I hate how they have the "." symbol beside the tab bar, it's too freaking small.
I thought I was getting the good deal here when I gave my wife the Evo and me getting a brand new shinny phone. Ha. I think I'm going to get the 3D
Update#1: wow like 20 mins later and wow the wifi timed out already had to restart it. Yeah this is really making me appreciate the Evo. This is my first Motorola phone by the way.Last.
Update#2: Just found out you can't send SMS messages while you're on the phone. The Evo did it all the time. not MSM messages but plain old text messages........on top of that I called sprint to see about sending me a HTC Evo 3D but they told me I'd have to wait till my 30 days are up(Oct 16) before they can send me a phone out BECAUSE I'm in Alaska(Army) now and of course sprint don't have a walk in store here so I can't send the phone back in to the sprint store I got it from in GA, I'd be without a phone for like 3 weeks. So Sprint high above said they would send me a 3D after my 30 days are up.......Guess it gives me more time to think about all this. I do like the design and the Extra that it's a world phone but meh I guess I want need it unless this phone works over in Afghanistan. hmmmm.
update#3 Scratch the Evo 3D.........because I'm getting the Iphone 4gs. my 30 days will be up oct 16 then sprint will send me a replacement of my choice. $199 iphone 4gs I can't wait!!!. The Photon is great but I just prefer something else with a bit more life too it. Thanks guys.

This might be right, I believe the issue comes at a point where the settings
within the WiFiTeather app for Transmit Power is at %100.
You might want to try to reduce the Transmit power and see if that helps it.
About the issue with car charging, I don't believe your alone on this,
However seeing as though this post lacks detail information regarding Current Running apps,
Services being active like 4g/wifi/BT/GPS and the power/amp going to the phone from the charger,
it might be hard to give you a definitive answer.
I also have had this issue and I can't say that it's only the photon.
All in all good luck and maybe someone here that is more advanced in power consumption will be able to shine light on this.

You won't find a phone that doesn't get really hot when tethering for a good period of time. You cant blame the phone when an accessory that isn't made for it doesn't work with it.. There are many alternative keyboards available if the stock doesn't suit you. Have fun with your 3d.

The phone is plugged up when I run wifi tether. yeah I figured it was the power option under wifi tether settings but didnt want to change anything that would stop wifi tether from working......in the car I have pandora radio playing while charging=no charge. I'm always connected to 3g. pandora/web browser and wifi tether is like the only apps I use all day...

Get the gingerbread keyboard....the stock one isn't that great. And try a different car charger, I have a generic off brand one and I've never had an issue with it working.....

A co-worker had a blackberry microusb charger at work, now A: good news is my photon battery last very very long I can get through my nine hour work day with moderate use and still have < 10%. B: The blackberry charger although plugged in and a gave charging animation, never seem to actually raise the % of power. It may have slowed it but not by a whole lot.

Like xTMFxOffshore said, you can always use gingerbread keyboard or many others. Remember, this is Android not the iPhone, you can use a different keyboard, and a different launcher... Just switch to a new keyboard, (I prefer Smart Keyboard Pro, or A.I.Type Keyboard), and you might enjoy your phone again. If you don't like Motorola's launcher try the ever-so-customizable Go Launcher / Go Launcher Ex, or Launcher Pro, or just look in the Market for more launchers. If you don't Motorola's Dialer, look in the Market for a dialer such as Rocket Dialer, or Go Contacts/Go Contacts Ex. Same applies for Browser (I like Dolphin HD Browser personally), SMS application (I like GoSMS personally), Camera application (I like the stock Camera app personally), and much more. Look in the Market. Themes for Launchers, some SMS apps, some Dialers, (both such as GoSMS/GoContacts), set the tone for the application, and make it more enjoyable.
I had the same experience with the charger, except it was a home charger. Try buying on Amazon.com, Motorola Vehicle Power Adapter micro-USB Charger and have a new car charger that works.
As for wifi tethering, lilrepo and Acvice already addressed that above. Try the Wifi Tether 3.1, beta6 app, found on the website.
Now if you follow our tips, you can fall in love with the Photon all over again.
As for the random restarts, you may have a loose battery, call Motorola and explain that to them, and for motivation tell them about the charger, (you may have to say it won't charge), and remind them that you are covered by a 1 year warranty for all parts and accessories. They will ask for your serial number/IMEI found in the About section of your phone, and send one to your home address. If you get a new battery, break it in by first draining it until your phone shuts off, charging it to 100% while off, repeat those steps again, and it will be "broken in."
Another possibility for the random restarts, is overheat protection. Your Photon will turn off / restart to prevent overheat, or when the processor gets overloaded. Try not to charge your phone while using the tether app, as that makes it hotter.
One more tip: to keep and maintain a healthy battery on all phones, Once A Month: Drain your battery until the phone shuts off, then charge it to 100% while off.
Also remember, this phone is the best in signal and call clarity.
Remember to update your PRL once a month, to get better service.
Good luck, I hope I helped! Looking forward towards your reply.
PS- You may have a faulty phone, the first couple batches of Photons were kinda iffy. Go to your point of purchase or call/email them, and you may get a free replacement. If all else fails, contact Motorola.

The only BIG issue I had was the silent calls but hey now thats fixed other than that hmmm.... its not .2 inches bigger and it doesn't have a Samoled+ screen oh and seriously I miss the notification toggles other than that the phone has been great.
Does seem however your phone is faulty out of the many people here only a few have real issues with the phone

Came from a BB 9650. I had an XPERT and hated it.
Got the Photon and had the same issues you have.
After the updates it was much better but still getting hot. I finally exchanged it and now running the same apps no more heat issues.
I had a problem with entering TXT or dialing and that was an app crashing the phone. Not sure what app but I went back to bare minimum including a fair number of apps and an exchange email client and no more issues.
I think you need to exchange the phone before you make a final decision.

My last 4 phones (Tilt, Fuze, Evo and Mopho) all get hot tethering, you are, more or less, draining the battery at a high rate of speed!. 2nd, there are a MILLION different options for another keybord, use one of the suggestions here or search until you find one YOU like. As far as restarts, one, you rooted it, two, its possible you have a broken phone?
Lastly (and trust me, I learned the HARD way!) Not all chargers are alike!! A friend of mine quit and left his BB charger and I figured I would use it for Evo. I could use that thing till the cows came home before I got maybe 30 or 40%? Even though the spec's looked the same, my chargers worked. Ended up using BB charger for bluetooth.

i would have to agree with everyone as well, my OG droid would get so hot i could barely even touch it, after about 15 minutes of WIFI tethering the battery would hit the 60c range and shortly turn off, even look at dedicated WIFI hotspots that are designed to be used constantly they get just as hot ( i had a mifi from Verizon, and i have a sprint 4g hotspot for work both get very hot)my mifi would slow to a crawwwwwl after about 6 hours of use till it cooled down. this is going to happen anytime you stick something like wifi in such a small form factor feel your wifi router at home its hot too and it at least has some notches for passive cooling. the fact of the matter is that all phones were not designed to do this long term. enjoy your 3d as its going to be the same deal for you.

Love the MoPho signature, that's bang'n! Also, I'm getting this kit on Thursday. I'm excited. I hear the radio is exceptional and being blanketed in 4G like I am, it would be nice to pull a consistent 12Mbps. I can pull 8Mbps consistently with the OG Epic 4G so, hopefully this is even better!

Thanks, it's custom made by myself... If you want something like this, PM me and I can work on something of your design... (when I get home.)
As for the 4G, Sprint is working hard with LightSquared on new 4G LTE, this may work with our phones, many users say no, but I've spoken to Motorola & Sprint Reps, and they have all said yes.
The radios are great! Call quality is superb! Motorola is best with these radio chips. We are packing a Tegra 2 dual core processor.

Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

My EVO 4G would get very hot after tethering for some time, it's gonna happen no matter what phone you get since (as said before) you're draining the battery at a high rate.
There are tons of keyboards on the Android Market, you just need to find the one you like best. I personally use Thumb Keyboard.

My HTC Evo used to cook my eggs when I would tether. It's just one of those things that come along with tethering. This phone does has it's flaws but crappy, I think not.

Don't do it man I came from the evo3d to the photon. The evo3d gets hot just from internet browsing and phone calls alone and don't get me started on how it gets when you use GPS the only things that the evo3d has on the photon is sense 3.0 and more custom roms and kernels photon has better signal, call quality, wayyyyy louder speaker, stock battery life and camera. This is android. remember you can change damn near anything on ur phone that you don't like
If you take the time to look for it.

Are you 100% satisfy with your E3D? Why/why not?
Had mine for two weeks now...
Can't say I'm that happy. Random reboots, reception issues, and things like my battery discharging even though its plugged into my USB annoy me.
Stickin with it though, I have faith in this thing.
I am very satisfied with it in an "off-the-shelf" capacity. There is virtually no lag, and does everything I would expect from a non-rooted phone very well.
I don't have any of the issues though. No reboots, screen issues etc.
Once it is perm rooted it will be perfect.

Am I the only one with a perfect E3D? I've been reading threads from other site as well. A lot of people had problems. On the released date, I called sprint rep to upgrade. Ever since the day I received it, never had any problem, but for some reason still not satisfy. Maybe because there's no permanent root s-off?

Lmao mine takes about 6 to 7 hours to charge and it will sit at 99% and keep charging succks lol think its staying awake .
I was happy with the EVO but not Sprint. Sadly i blows in my area (or PR entirely) dropped calls, goes straight to roaming in the first floor of my house, average data speeds or 200kbps and a all time low of 7kbps etc. It wasnt worth the switch from TMO. Good thing they let me reactivate before 30 days of cancellation and its like it never happened im back at 5mbps land and my phone works at home now horray!!! Bummer since the 3VO was a nice peice of kit

I'm very happy no issues at All!! May be the green tint on the pics but it doesn't bother me.at all cuz of the Camera Effects u can change colors and stuff, battery life has been great
Ohhh I found a bug, my bootloader still says S-Off lol

For me i am Happy but would be happier if the stuff was better implemented, seriously HTC no Hardware Acceleration for 2D or Browser, They could have just taken the stuff from CM and put in, Also Animations aren't that smooth, when i plug in via USB the screen responsiveness goes down. 3D is something i am loving. Woulf be happier if they had put in a 8mpx camera in there to go with a 5mpx or just 2 8mpx
This phone gives me a boner every time I turn the screen on.
Everything is pretty much perfect except for the green tint thing and I'm hoping they'll fix that with a future software upgrade. If not, it's still not a deal breaker for me.

Rebooting, Overheating, and Problems (oh my!)

Morning, gentlemen.
I'd like to give you a break down of the 44~ hours I've had this phone as of right now and the troubles I've had with it. I'll preface this post with the fact that I work a corporate IT job and even as I may believe everything posted to be correct, please correct me if I state anything incorrectly. Thanks
I received the HTC Rezound around 3PM EST on Friday. Out of the box, I was unable to active the phone. I was coming from a 3G Droid X via an alternate line upgrade, and I had played with the Droid Bionic and had some issues activating there. I'll chalk up activating issues to needing to activate the 4G SIM card over the phone because of it being a corporate account. After 25 minutes on the phone with our Verizon representative, we were successful in activating the phone. Immediately afterwords, the phone rebooted. I believe that it did because of the PRI programming, but I'm also not terribly familiar with the back-end of the 4G activation.
At 3:30 PM EST it was at 35% out of the box after activation. I figured that I'd let it drain entirely to zero out the battery and charge it to 100% later on that night. After getting home and around 7:30 PM, the phone battery gave up and shut down. I plugged in the phone (HTC charger, HTC cable, surge protected outlet) and at 9:00 stood in front of the phone watching it go from off, to the HTC white boot screen, to the unlock screen where it would be completely frozen, and approx. 30 seconds later, would loop that process again and again until I pulled the battery. I go to pick up the phone and it's very hot. Not uncomfortable just yet, but hotter than any phone since the droid 1 had gotten in my hand. Pulled the battery, let it cool down, and booted to the HTC recovery (power + vol. Down) and wiped the phone. After booting, the battery was only at 14%. Strange since it had been on the charger, but I supposed bootlooping might hinder the ability to charge. After verifying that it was not bootlooping any further and using my old fascinate charger (same voltage, same microUSB connector), I went to bed.
Saturday morning 8AM, the phone was bootlooping again. Pulled the battery, let it boot up afterwords after and it was at 100% battery. Strange. Fast forward to 5PM: Phone has rebooted twice throughout the day maybe around noon and 2PM, but no looping. Battery was at 50%, and at 5:15 PM it begins to bootloop again. Pull battery, turn it back on, battery is at 9%. I plug it into the HTC charger using the HTC cable again to a grounded power strip. Plug it in at 5:30 PM and walk away.
At 7PM, I go to pick up the phone and it's bootlooping again and it is so hot it's literally uncomfortable to hold for more than literally a couple seconds. Immediately unplug it from the cable and pull the battery, also very uncomfortable to hold. I decide that the HTC charger is having many problems, and put it away so I don't use it by accident. I've uploaded a video on my Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1661452940302) so that you can see what the screen was doing after it heated up that much. I didn't have any other problems with the phone after one FINAL reboot for last night.
This morning, I placed it on the charger: Same deal of massive overheating and the screen doubling. EDIT: I've also noticed that for the most part, it overheats if it charges past 50%
Simply put: This is a beautiful phone, a wonderful speakerphone, great at texting. But seriously: I haven't seen anything else like ANY of this online anywhere yet. Anyone else seeing issues like these?
Thanks.
Dan Manners
Nope.
Try pulling the battery and putting it back. Do not power up. Connect to charger and let it full charge. Disconnect charger and boot it
If it is super hot during any of that take it back.

I watched that video. I have NEVER seen anything like that and I have seen some weird stuff on my phone trying some weird modifications. (I have gotten massive screen tear and other stuff but that is due to the things I have done).
I would suggest returning the phone and getting a new one. I imagine that one is a lemon. You could try restoring the phone via the RUU in the shipped rom thread in the developement section but I think you should just return that one.
Unless you have messed with it aside from what you have told us (I doubt it though) I would return that one.
Easy
Return it.
My first Incredible did this, and my current incredible is doing this. Something in your phone is causing a thermal overload, which triggers a reboot, which gets only so far in the reboot until the thermal protection loads, it notices it is hot, and triggers a reboot [repeat].
In my case, the hardware radio (on both Dincs) was damaged/defective/finally gave way. 10 seconds on the internet will do this to me.
Return it. Do not diagnose it. Do not follow other peoples recommendations for testing. Return it. You must get rid of a phone like this.
Of course, this is one of my huge fears because I am leaving my Dinc for this phone; and now I am seeing that lemons are in this batch as well.

Definitely what I'm planning on doing. Debating on whether I want to hold of until tomorrow so I can show my boss though. I usually mess with my droid phones (Alternate roms, overclocking, undervolting, etc) and he always gets annoyed. For once, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX it's acting like this. I suppose it's Karma

Just show him that video haha. That convinced me immediately. If it is really getting that hot there is a real problem and I would be getting it out of my hands ASAP.
you either just got a faulty phone or a faulty battery. as the others are saying, return/exchange it.
I personally got a dead pixel and the touch screen is a tad off(I'll click on a link and it'll think I clicked on the link right above(or below).... not all the time though.
right now I'm just sitting in front of Verizon waiting for them to open.
Mine gets fairly warm, especially when working while being plugged.
My first phone had a problem with the bezel coming apart, but it also ran warmer then the second one I have, it was always warm in my pocket, the new one isn't.
If you guys use LTE OnOff you can turn off the antenna you don't need/use be it CDMA or LTE. It will run cooler and battery life will last longer.

I always leave it off, LTE really is overrated. A wonderful nicety, but I don't NEED it.
...
With total and complete respect for the immediately preceding couple of posters, I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH ... do not use tricks to cool your phone down.
You do not want to wind up on the other side of the 14 days with a phone which otherwise overheats from general use. DO NOT FOLLOW ADVICE SUCH AS TURNING OFF LTE.
Sure, if you have a working phone, and you think that will help your battery, then go for it. If you have thermal issues do NOT use bandaids.
(This has been a public service announcement).
LOL. I'm watching this very closely.
If the device isn't currently overheating turning LTE off isn't going to hurt it, lmao. They wouldn't bake in a feature that is going to make your phone melt down. Now, if you have problems CURRENTLY then you should warranty replace it. But 14 days doesn't have anything to do with it, you can call and warranty your phone anytime in the first year, 2 if you have the extended warranty. So it is NOT bad advice to turn it off if it is of no use to you. Don't scare people into killing their batteries just because they don't currently have an issue.
To the OP: I am currently on my SECOND DEFECTIVE Brand new Rezound.
The first one gave up on having any sort of vibrate function whatsoever (yes, the battery was pulled, factory reset, blah blah). Haptic feedback, softkey vibration, and all vibrations in general were completely dead. I took it back and got a brand new one since it's only 6 DAYS old. It only started having this problem this morning.
Got the new one at about 11AM today, and it starting having the power cycling issue that you're having about an hour ago. The phone is literally 7 HOURS old and wont stay on for more than 30 seconds before it reboots itself. I am VERY disappointed. Now I have to find the time to go in yet AGAIN to Verizon. I was on the phone with the tech and tried battery pulling it and factory data resetting it to no avail. It wouldn't even Factory Data Reset from HBOOT!
Sigh.

Why don't you go in and calibrate the keyboard if it's off?
OP
I think you should have added a "None of the above" as a selection for your poll. would have a lot more than 2 people.
My first phone and my second phone are set up the same, both factory reset both with LTE on and the second one makes little to no heat when idle, the first was warm all the time.

I tried to go to Verizon today, but they refused to do anything since it's a corporate account and 48 hours old. I'm really up in the air about whether I'm going to stick with the Rezound or go back to the Droid X.

Wow, that's ridiculous. They had no issues whatsoever replacing mine (and the one I'm replacing tomorrow) because it's within the first 14 days of purchase. I guess it works differently for corporate accounts.
Honestly, though.. I can't imagine them saying anything other than "Sorry, we'll give you a new one". How can you be sold a product that is OBVIOUSLY defective (and certainly NOT cheap) and be told that there's nothing that can be done? It just doesn't make any sense to me.
I'm actually pretty upset that I keep having to go get replacements, even though they're new. I've been looking forward to getting this phone for a while and actually would like it to work correctly. It's just disappointing to see that 2/2 have been defective so far. Hopefully it ends there.

[Q] HTC Amaze Stock Charger and Battery Issues

My HTC Amaze will not hold a charge. I am using the stock included USB Wall plug and the Micro EXT 12 Pin Cable which only comes with the AMaze (it is also included with the Flyer Tablet). When I first plug in the phone to charge the charge light blinks orange for five minutes and then remains solid. When I return hours later the light is totally out (no green indicator light showing a full charge which I used to get). When I try to turn on the phone the Screen flashes for a split second but nothing happens.
I tried to troubleshoot by swapping in my HTC Sensation battery and that does power up the AMAZE. I have now switched the included Amaze charger with the one that came with the HTC Sensation. The orange power light comes on immediately although it only blinked with the other charger. I am worried that maybe the Power adapter is frying my batteries.
Does anyone know if these included chargers share the same specifications for the Sensation, Amaze etc??? Anyone else experience this problem??
The only thing I can think of is your version of Recovery. I know that the phone will not charge while it is turned off if you have not flashed the most recent version that includes the fix for this problem. Try turning the phone on and then plugging it in to the charger.

Is there a fix for this problem? Does the version of recovery affect the phones ability to charge when its turned off?
either recovery or faulty battery! what happens when you put amaze battery in to sensation?
HTC Amaze Battery
When I put the HTC amaze battery into the Sensation and try to charge it the light blinks. Then after 5 minutes goes solid orange. After hours the light shuts off and I unplug it and try to power up but NOTHING. Dead. I purchased two Anker batteries, tried to charge them in Sensation. One works fine but cannot be charged in the HTC Amaze. I have even tried it with both the White Amaze USB cable and both the HTC Amaze included charger and the Sensation included charger. ( I believe they are the same model). Could it be the USB connection is somehow not allowing the phone to charge?
Doesnt HTC warranty the battery for any period of time???

Yes, there is a fix if that is indeed the issue. Are you able to determine what version of recovery you are using? It could still be a faulty battery though.
Upgrading my phone from a SGS 4g
I heard that the Battery is a big issue on this phone.... can someone tell me if they fixed it with updates or is it still a problem because i really love the camera on this one and im really loving the design but there were other statements abt poor reception in some areas which leaves me in doubt.... Bottom line should i go for Galaxy s 2 over this???

After rooting and using custom roms I don't think there is any battery issues. IMO Battery life is great. Phone is still one if not the best and can be in the top best phones for a while, only thing right now is development. If your all about development then go with s2 if not then amaze. I'm happy with what I have

Tell me something, what is it that really drains the battery on the Amaze? Is it the 4G? Thing is, my device would be on WiFi for the majority of the day. I've seen some apps where you can auto switch network based on proximity. So I'd only be using 3G/4G while I'm in transit.
Also, is there a way to disable 3G/4G so as to only get EDGE?

When I walk in my house, my WiFi comes on and 4g turns off... No special app... I think its a feature of the ROM I use. Sometimes it doesn't kick in until I open my WiFi networks though. If you have WiFi on though when you aren't connected to a network, the constant scanning will drain your battery.
Also, other things that drain the battery:
Sense Widgets... Although attractive, huge battery Hog
Live Wallpapers - Duh
Overclocked Kernels... Faster performance = Faster drain
Heavy usage... When the screen is always on and the data network is constantly being used, it also drops.
On the new Energy ROM, its nice because when your phone is not being used, neither is your battery. My phone went 3 hours with only changing 1%.

Did somebody make a statistic - which SOFTWARE drain battery more quick on Amaze?
Are there any apps that select Wifi based on your GPS location? I'm just trying to figure out how I can get this phone and actually be able to use it without having to pull an arm and a leg.
Battery issues
hey guys, i've had an amaze for about a month now, and these last 2 weeks that i've had it, the phone will randomly shut off once a day when im at or around 50%. I'm not sure if this is a battery or a hardware issue. I have used a non-stock charger and cord to charge it 2 times a week so i'm not sure if this might have anything to do with it. I have the official unofficial ICS update, did a full wipe, relocked the bootloader and unlocked it again and basically put a clean ICS on it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Llama. It doesn't even use GPS, it uses cell towers to determine location, which your phone's doing already.

This link shows the new 12 pin technology that MUST be used with the Amaze. This is a real pain, just purchased two HTC-Amaze phones and taking them back for the Galaxy.
I hate it when they change technology and make all your charging cords in your phones and your computers obsolete and don't tell you. Also, the Amaze is designed for European drivers. The charging cord plugs into the left-upper middle of the phone and it is dangerous to pick up to unplug wile driving because the cord hits the steering wheel. How do you spell DANGER? Really heavy and clunky phone too. Galaxy has bigger screen and is lighter - another reason to pass on the Amaze. Be careful with this phone if you aren't aware it is in a tech world of it's own. Just replacing the charging cords in our autos and computers cost more than the phone. Sheesh!

I use a standard micro USB to charge my Amaze. Works fine.
I think you may mean "designed for English drivers", since they are the only European country that drives on the left side of the street and thus have the driver on the right side. But in any case one is not supposed to be messing around with the power while driving anyway.

As mentioned, conventional microUSB cords work fine, and some of HTC's own documentation says so, some even recommend it. I do find I get a better/faster charge using HTC's cables, but they are functionally the same as microUSB. The odd connector is more secure, though -- it's longer and inserts further in the socket.
You should not be picking up or juggling your phone while driving. Period. End quote. Just don't.
I am also disappointed to the Nth degree with the Amaze, actually not so much the phone which is lovely and solid and attractive and loaded with hardware features, I'm furious with HTC's absolutely stupid mess with drivers, and refusal to quickly resolve issues with the software. It's October, 10 months after purchase, and I have problems with WiFi, Android Beam, Bluetooth, surprise shutdowns (just finding the phone has turned off by itself). In short, it's failed to function as a reliable phone.
I'll never buy from them again. Never. Ever. Google Nexus phones for me from now on, and not on a carrier contract either. I've been burned for the last time.

From what I've read, the shutdowns may be caused by the battery. You might want to try replacing the battery you are using. So far I have not found one better than the OEM.

Numerous problems with the new Evo LTE

I just got a new Evo 4g LTE from BestBuy 2 days ago. The second thing I did after getting the phone (first was to activate it) was to try and update the software, PRL, profile, etc. Nothing seemed to need an update. I even tried to update any of the apps, but everything was latest. I then took lot of pains to get it all set up for me. But I have started seeing multiple problems:-
1) The proximity sensor does not seem to be working. During a call, the screen would not turn ON when I bring the phone away from my ear. Also, screen won't stay ON while it's away from my ear. During (or when I just start) a call, it shuts off immediately. Sometimes when I press the power button the screen would come ON for less than 1 sec and switch back OFF. On those occasions, I have to press power button multiple times to finally get the screen to stay ON. I have a screen protector on it. Although I have read that removing the screen protector might help, I do not want to remove it as I would hate to scratch the screen on brn new phone.
2) The 3G speeds are too slow --- ~30kbps as compared to my original evo 4G which gave me ~200kbps in the same exact location(s) --- yes I did try it in various locations. These are the speeds without any case on the phones. And I am paying $10/month extra for "premium data service"??? I have tried updating the prl multiple times, but to no avail.
3) It keeps on loosing the wireless connection in the house. In some cases it's showing me poor signal strength when all other wireless devices, including original Evo 4G, shows good or excellent signal strength. This is with the 2.4GHz band. It almost never is able to connect to the 5GHz signal. This even without any case on the LTE phone.
4) The ringer on the phone is not loud enough. I have tried various different ringtones, but nothing seems to help. Even with the volume turned absolutely high it's not as loud as original Evo.
5) The colors on the screen are really bad -- especially the skin colors. The colors have a warm/reddish undertone.
6) The battery of Evo LTE does not even last 1 day without even having any resource hungary apps installed yet. Infact my old (original) Evo lasts longer than this new one. And no I do not have the extended battery on it. It still has it's original battery that came with it 2 years ago.
7) On original Evo, I could independently change the volume for the speaker-phone speaker and for the near-the-ear speaker. In Evo LTE, I am unable to do so. If I increase the 'In-call volume' while on speaker phone and then go back to non speaker-phone mode, the in ear volume is too high even though I did not change that volume.
8) While dialing a phone, the original Evo used to vibrate as soon as the phone started ringing. Sometimes it can take upto 30-40sec before the phone actually starts dialing. This feature of original Evo helped me a lot in multitasking as I used to use that as a cue to put the phone to the ear. But Evo LTE does not do that.
9) I would like to change the locking/unlocking mechanism of Evo LTE to same as that of original Evo as I am used to it and it was a lot simpler to use while driving.
10) One of the apps that I have on my evo 4g is no longer available on the google play store. I use it extensively and absolutely need it. Can you tell me how to get it?
By the way, the phone seems to be heating up quite a bit while using as well. I am not sure if it's by design or what. I just hope that it dos not reduce the life of the phone.
I have also tried some of the suggestions mentioned on this forum, but nothing has helped so far.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix these problems? Can Sprint reps help pass this along to their HTC counterparts for immediate fix? From what I have read online until now, a lot of people are having simillar problems and exchanging phones has not really helped. I guess Sprint/HTC rolled out these phones without proper testing.
I dunno dude, I am no expert, but I think your phone is defective.
I have had mine for 4 days now and I don't have any of these issues.
I have not had the time to really install many apps though.
I did a test yesterday at work where I listened to TuneIn Radio for about 2 hours and then spent the next6 hours using facebook and texting.
My Battery was at 46% after the 8~hrs of use.
Much better than my OG Evo w/ CM-Rom.
In your wifi settings, make sure you take it off from Auto and put it strictly on 2.4ghz.
My WiFi was dropping continuously until I did this.
I will agree with the skin colors being off. I have this photo of Olivia Wilde I had on my OG Evo that I just loved and I really don't like the way it looks on this Evo.
I also agree with the speaker not being as loud as the OG Evo.
But other than those few things, it sounds to me like you have a defective phone.
Is this your first time buying a phone on release day? Chill out man, stuff will get fixed. This happens with every phone. Old EVO had issues too, and they got ironed out by the time I picked up mine a year ago. Maybe you are used to getting phones that have their issues fixed already. Release day is today... Issues are to be expected.

I find it hard to believe you came from an OG EVO given the fact you just joined xda.
The sensor is probably not bad it mostl likely is the screen zagg screen protector its not cut right it covers most of the sensor, the batter doesn't die fast but its been proven that google maps eats battery it has to many setting turned on the reddish color if u are using a screen protector will cause that to and the WiFi has different setting to change the strength

A lot of those will get ironed out with updates and time. Expected from a launch day phone.
My biggest pet peeve on the phone is #5. Their is something not right with the screen saturation. One X had this problem and HTC was supposedly putting out an update to fix it for that phone. I'm sure they'll do the same for us.
As for getting that app your missing. If your rooted you could back it up with Titanium backup then restore it on your phone. Or you could google the name of the app with "apk" and I"m sure you'll find it from a external source.
Could we get this thread deleted, moved or something?
This guy has posted this same exact thing in multiple threads and it's starting to wear thin.

I have not had any of these issues. I got the phone today and I have not put it down. I keep hearing about the prox sensor. I agree, it must be a zagg thing (I am going to roll with no screen cover for the first time). The prox has worked perfect every time. In fact, I just found out if you put the phone screen down in a call it automatically turns on speaker phone, (bad Ass).
It has taken me a little getting used to. My nexus S 4G was the perfect size phone. The 4" screen and the curved glass was the best for comfort. That being said, I do not think I could ever go back to a 4" screen after using this. My wife's iphone 4s looks like a toy compared to this beast. First HTC for me and I see why they have such a big following.
The screen and cam are wicked.
If updates will make this phone better, then bring them on. I am already happy stock out of the box.
#10... We can't read your mind..what app?
Don't feed the troll
Ok OP...since you have already posted the exact same thing elsewhere, I'm going to close this thread.
In the future, only post about an issue once, in one location.

Completely sudden, unexplained, and unreasonable death of Evo LTE.

If my HTC EVO LTE was a human being and it had died the way it did, you bet your techie bottom that CSI and possibly Mulder and Scully from X Files would have been involved.
So with that being said:
It was a regular day. Woke up in the morning. Kissed my wife good morning, and grabbed my EVO to play around a bit. Then we headed to my in-laws business, of which we are in charge in the weekend. I usually take my laptop, so as I always do, I got easy tether going and proceeded to plug in my phone into my laptop. I have an application called droid wallet, which allows me to keep track of my finances. I intended to log something onto droid wallet, but I did not want to undo my tethering connection, so I simply reached behind the laptop without unplugging the phone and turned on the screen. I did so clumsily, and I accidentally turned the phone screen back off. When I attempted to turn it back on, it simply did not. I suddenly went, wtf? I kept on clicking the power button repeatedly, to no avail. I proceeded to unplug my phone from the computer. At this point, I realized the phone was not responding. I did long power button press, many short presses, everything I could think of. When I plugged it back into the charger, the charging light no longer triggered on. I hurried it to my local best buy (I got black tie protection) and they told me the phone was done for, and proceeded to give me a new one.
It was too late when i realized....at some point during the beginning of my vacation, my phone automatically switched to storing everything onto phone memory , and a whole trip's worth of pics and videos of a very meaningful vacation with my wife was completely gone.
Things like this are common with crappy build phones like samsung, as it has happened to most people. But HTC? They have never failed me like this. Do you guys have any idea wtf happened??
no comment on what might have happenned, but you should look into the picture auto-upload capabilities. I use the one from dropbox, but I think you can do it with google+ also.
this is the SAME issue that happened to my EVO YESTERDAY!!! the screen would jsut go off when i made a call, i couldnt power it back on and now i get NO charger light!!! ahh!
im going to the sprint store today to get a new one hopefully.
I think you screwed up and did it wrong. Maybe if you kissed your phone good morning and played around with your wife you wouldn't be having problems.

Did you try the power button plus the vol + and - buttons at the same time trick? The charger light wouldn't come on if it froze.

i didnt try that, but i think its a bit too late now. i have my new Evo and best buy kept the old one. I never tried that trick, but it was my understanding that that combination of buttons was to take a snapshot of the screen? or am i wrong?
And about the whole samsung vs HTC thing, let's just agree to disagree. No amount of arguing is going to convince me that Samsung is a better product, nor is it going to convince you that HTC is a better product. What I said I said based on personal experiences, and very extensive research. Im sure you have your reasons too. Im not a Samsung hater, either. I love their TVs and I have owned 2 of them. I just dont trust their phones. BUt I digress. Lets stay on topic, please, everyone.

you're right, no one can argue that. Hope the issue at hand is isolated to very few devices.

And everyone please, as the OP, I think I have the right to say please STFU already. No more Samsung vs HTC debates, I thought I was clear in my previous posts. I intended this thread as a troubleshooting thread, not a debate one about manufacturer reliability. I do apologize, because I did bring it up in the first place, but I also quickly shot it down. What I said in my OP post about was not meant to troll. It was just meant to express my disbelief in HTC failing me, as personally, it has never done so before.
with the above being said, I do have an important development:
One of the things i disliked about this phone in the two first weeks I had it is that it became really hot on my ear when I used it for more than five miutes. To the point that I had to pull it away and set it to speaker mode for a little while for it to cool off. I thought it was a common EVO LTE thing, but surpirse surprise, my brand new EVO does not have this heating issue at all. It called directv today to haggle down prices (successfully, if i might add) and I was on the phone with them for at least one hour +. No heating at all. THere was another poster on here (first page I think) who said they had the exact same thing happened to them. I would love to confirm if the "burning your ear in less than 10 min" issue is directly related to sudden deaths of this device??

FWIW, I work at a repair store and I had one of these returned EVO LTE's to work one. Phone was completely DOA, could not power on, no indication of charging when plugged in, triage laptop didn't react when it was plugged in, pressing and holding power button for 60 seconds didn't work, lights on four capacitive buttons didn't flash, etc etc.
I had another known good EVO LTE that was returned because of buyer's remorse so I popped it open, disconnected the battery (which I knew for sure had at least 50% charge), and swapped it into the dead LTE and same deal-- phone still refused to power on.

You rang?
Hi, this is your invitation to leave and go to the sgs3 section, from your friendly neighborhood Evo LTE moderator.
I'm going to allow this thread to stay open for the moment, on the chances that the trolling and flaming ends. Fair warning everyone, go away now.
@OP - sorry your thread has devolved into childish bickering. Hopefully this straightens things up.

OK first let me apologize for any side tracking of the thread. Sorry!
How do you pop it open? I'd love to be able to take the battery out.

Looked at a dead one "personal experience", under a lighted magnifier.
What I saw was a pin tip sized drop of solder, near the sdsocket. Seemed like an overheating issue, with what I assumed was a fuse. Though it could just have been a bad assembly which tested marginally with reduced burn in time. Just saying.

As mentionr earlier, Dropbox is the way to go. It's free or 2GB and easy to increase your free space. Enable auto upload and pictures and videos automatically upload to a "camera upload" folder. You specify if upload only on wi-fi or either wi-fi or 3G. It s SO convenient and definitely worth a look.
Go to dropbox.com or use http://db.tt/WYZmyfxT and I'll get free referral space.
Had this just happen to me... Was on the phone and it completely died on me. No charging light, power button hit long and short. Nothing worked.
But... The holding the volume and the power buttons at the same time trick worked. I am now back on and ready to go. Thank god, I just got this damn thing set up the way I like.
