[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 hangs on Samsung logo at boot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I tried to install CyanogenMod7 on my phone, which failed miserably, and since I have been reading and trying all sorts of things, without success.
At the time it had CF-Root installed, and a ROM manager installed from Market.
I tried installing CM7 through the user interface, the phone rebooted, and then it hung at the Samsung logo screen, and has never gotten past that point again.
I have booted into Android Recovery System (3e) to attempt to install CM7 from there, but i cannot see my SD card in the ARS(3e). It claims to be showing the SD cars, and that it is in the /sdcard folder, but the contents of the folder are those of the internal storage.
So basically I am stuck at the boot logo, I can access Download Mode and Recovery Mode, but that's it.
Oh, and the SD card is 2 weeks old, and has been working perfectly.
Does anyone here have any advise on how I could get my phone up and running again?

It sounds like you haven't flashed the kernel.

I did flash the kernel by installing the CF-root for my device using ODIN.
I have since installed the stock kernel again, to see if that helped.

Usual steps are to follow the instructions .
You require a CWM 4 or above root and CWM .
jje

I was following the instructions, and I have done this before with other Android phones.
My problem is that when I am trying to select the Update.zip, the directory listing shows my internal storage, and not the SD card. So I am unable to select an OS to install.

REPEAT
You have
I have booted into Android Recovery System (3e)
You require CWM 4e
jje

The problem is repeating.
I have tried installing CVM 4e, but I am still left with a phone that hangs on the initial Samsung logo, and where I am unable to access the SD card from the CVM.

he is stuck on the bootloader screen and cannot access cwm 4e, the best he can do is the stock recovery 3e as he is trying to flash the update located on the external sdcard which can not be accessed from recovery 3e as it is not seen only internal sdcard can be seen in recovery mode.

Can you see your phone's directory when you are plugged into the computer.
If yes, move the update into the root of the internal sdcard and use which ever recovery you have to flash on to the phone>

I can not see the phones directory when I am plugged into the computer, but I copied CM7 onto the phones internal directory just in case. So it is there, but it has the original file name, and I get errors, when I try to install it from CVM 3e or 4e.
If by "recovery" you mean something other than CVM7, I have no way of accessing the phones internal storage, as far as I am aware of.

Boot loop thread has instructions go back to a clean stock rom and flash 4 e recovery and root .
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
i just followed those instructions to the letter and CM7 installed no problem .
Wiped phone clean installed a stock rom then rooted with cwm 4 e .

I have CM7 and MoDaCo on my internal storage. When I try to install the CM7, it fails with a (status 7), and when I install the MoDaCo it claims to install without errors, but when I reboot, the phone hangs on the Samsung boot screen logo.
I am wondering if there is something wrong with the rooting, or if it has failed? If so, is there a way to root the phone, while unable to boot into the os, and is there a way to restore the phone to it's original OS and ROM?

I had the Superuser App installed after I rooted it, so I guess it must have been properly rooted.
Then I unfortunately have no idea what to do from now on.

Anyone got any ideas?

The same
download mode
install stock rom
reboot set up phone power off
install cwm and root
End
Install whatever custom rom you want .

The "reboot set up phone power off" part I assume is there the phone boots into the Android OS, and I have to set it up, before I can use it.
The problem is, that I have several times tried installing the stock rom. There is no problem there, but the phone still only boots until the Samsung boot logo, and then it hangs. I never get to boot into the OS.
So I have three options when I turn on the phone:
* Boot into Download Mode
* Boot into CVM 4e
* Boot normally, and the phone hangs at the first boot screen.
And I still do not have access to the external SD card from the Recovery, so I am not able to add anything to the storage, for me to work with.
Essentially what I have, is an expensive paperweight

I only have CM7 and MoDaCo on internal storage, and they don't work. I have no way of putting anything else on the internal storage, since the phone does not show up in windows, when I connect it.

I find it difficult to follow .
You have CMW 4 recovery but you have are trying to carry out an impossible task with it .
If you have CWM 4 recovery and you boot into it you can go to mounts and storage .
Format sd card format system format data format cache return advanced wipe dalvik cache .
Phone is now empty no OS nothing .wiped the sd card .
Next step would be to flash a stock firmware through Odin .
If none of that works you need a service centre and hope its not expensive repair .
jje
Roms to flash are placed on internal sd card not external sd card .

Alternatively, you can do a proper hard reset with typing *2767*3855#
As this will wipe your internal SD-card, be sure to have everything in backup.
Then you can flash a stock ROM via Odin in download mode.

Can't seem to successfully flash with CWM anymore?!

I was running the latest CM7 nightly for a while (release 116). I decided to give CM9 a try. I wanted to go back to CM7 so I tried flashing back but something went wrong. I had backup so I tried restoring that in CWM but it gave me a checksum error.
So I tried out the vanilla ICS 4.0.3 (KP8) build using odin. Used it for a bit and then decided to go back to CM7. I flashed to my original OS using ODIN, rooted the phone. Now, whenever I try to flash anything in CWM, it installs but then just goes into a endless boot sequences. Tried flashing MIUI and CM7 with no luck.
I'm on a rooted KI3 release atm.
How can I completely wipe my phone? I've reformatted my external and usb storage with no luck.

Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Root with same CWM as backup .
Boot recovery restore backup .

Thanks! Following the processes. Wasn't able to unmount SD card to format it but /data /system and /cache formatted fine. *crosses fingers*
going to use a freshly downloaded copy of CM7 nightly too incase my old zip got corrupted somehow.
I can install my stock firmware and root it with odin.
But, once I try to install Rom Manager and update CWM recovery things start going wrong. It reboots into the regular android recovery console and fails to install the update.
But, if I battery pull and boot into recovery it boots into CWM recovery 4.0.0.5. I can apply the update.zip ROM manager downloaded. But, then when I try to flash anything it doesn't install properly and I get stuck in an endless boot loop. Can't even boot into recovery. Have to start all over again with ODIN.
Rom Manager is causing you grief.
Had a similar thing happen a while back. I wouldn't use it at all if I were you and stick to using CW Recovery. I don't know the why/how/wherefore, I just know that time I tried to use it, it broke recovery & put me in a bootloop same as you.

[Q] problems with ClockWorkMod in Galaxy I9100

Hi
I have a SGSII (i9100) which I have successfully rooted (all "permission" files work ok through Superuser). However, I don't seem to be able to install Clockworkmod or, if successful, then I can't boot normally.
When I try to install CWM via Odin3, it installs ok, but the phone then hangs on the triangle screen. I can boot into the CWM screen where it tells me that it cannot mount to system nor to the cache. Any attempt to reboot normally fails (i.e. it hangs on the triangle screen). Thanks to a kind member helping me, I have been able to recover each time by using the I9100XXKI3.ZIP package.
I have also downloaded Rom Manager and tried to flash CWM from there. That says that it has been successfull, but when I then boot to the recovery, it tells me that "E:failed to verify whole-file signature and e:signature verification failed". Consequently, no CWM, just the usual recovery screen.
Am I missing something? Can someone help, please? At the moment I have root, but can't install any custom roms.
Thanks, masterpointer
Try to flash kernel with cwm. That should do it
Sent from my sgs2 running cm9 using xda app
First thing rom manager is not compatible will the sgs2, second thing it's confusing when you say you restore a .zip as this is done via cwm? In order to get recovery via odin you need to be using an appropriate rooting kernel. When you did manage to get into cwm did you wipe cache and delvik etc?

Download cf root kernel and flash with odin, and you`ll have cwm recovery. Don`t use rom manager with sgs2, never.

that's exactly what I have done! CWM installs, but phone hangs on the triangle screen.

I did use an appropriate kernel. I wiped neither the cache nor the delvic cache before flashing, and after flashing I can't as the message says: "e:failure to mount \system" and several massages "e:falure to mount \cache\..."

I take your point regarding Rom Manager. but that aside, I have flashed CWM via Odin3 onto a rooted kernel and it does install, but phone hangs (freezes) on the triangle screen. I have tried several versions of CWM an several rooted kernels. They all install and they all freeze!

Boot in recovery, mount and storage, format system, data, cache. Pull battery out, after 2 min put it back, boot in download mode, start odin, flash stock rom, reboot, reboot again in download mode, then root with cf root kernel. Should solve you problem

yes, but therein lies the problem:
After I use cf-root (with KI4 kernel), the phone hangs (despite Odin3 showing everything ok)! And when i then boot into recovery, it says "e:failure to mount \system" and several massages "e:falure to mount \cache\..." and attempts to "mount" the listed items, all fail.

Thanks for your help, but as I said previously, I was unable to do any of your suggestions because as soon as I installed CWM, I was unable to mount the system and the cache.
However, since then I did some further research and came across a forum where several others had the same problem and one of them tried to use "Speedmod-kernel-s2-k2-21-Odin.tar" and, lo and behold, that worked for me as well!!!

[Q] Messed up ROM Flash: Stuck at boot

I'm a noob when it comes to flashing a rom. I'm no expert so I think I accidentaly messed it up.
I wanted to flash a rom, everything seemed alright but now my tablet wont boot. It's stuck at the "Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1" logo.
I CAN enter recovery mode and it recognizes usb (but I have no access to the internal SD with my computer). I tried flashing the stock rom with odin but I either messed that up too or it simply didn't work.
Anyways my CWM Recovery is gone now after I flashed the stock ROM
I did cache and data wipes before.
What can I do. If I would only have access to the internal sd. Then I would try to flash the CWM Recovery mode with odin again and flash the rom directly from the internal SD. But I think that's not an option

is there any solution?
should i go to moto customer care center and get ROM installed ?
i am so confused . please help me out :crying::crying:
Nothing to worry about.
I think, you have wiped both internal and external storage.
Just go to TWRP recovery, connect device to computer via USB, enable mount USB storage in TWRP and copy TWRP backup or any ROM to internal or external storage and flash.
Or you can copy TWRP backup or ROM files on memory card and flash.
thanks a ton buddy. it worked and now my phone works perfectly fine :good:
