You may need to go into the settings and enable video calling. Once you do that you should see the option to make video calls.

lol wow ya, that was it.. coming from the iphone where everything is dumbed down and easy thanks

Where is this in settings?? I don't see the option...sorry. Are you using the AT&T version or the International?

lol ya. for the life of me i cant understand why this would even be an option to disable?? and you would think it would at least be on by default and you can disable it if you want? i just switched from the iphone4 after a very disappointing announcement yesterday to the galaxy s II and i'm realizing that with android there is almost always a few more hoops to jump through to do the same thing. i'm gonna give it at least a solid week before making any judgements though

I believe the issue is that the AT&T version has a different model number and hasn't been properly enabled in the Skype app. Normally, on any device I have tried using the enable option in settings, it still doesn't use the front camera. However, on the AT&T SGS II, enabling this option allows the front camera to work.
I am sure once the Skype app officially supports the AT&T SGS II model, this option change will be unnecessary.

Yeah, tested it out this morning and I can't see to get my Front Facing Camera to work.
I can see my wife who is using her iPhone 4 but she can't see me. Hopefully Skype will update soon.

I was able to get my front cam working just using the enable setting. I have verified that others can see me as well. I'm not sure why yours is still not working if you have enabled it in settings.

Question about a video call with Skype and sgs2: if you move your hands, do they blur? I'm wondering about using this setup for sign language. Thank you.

All -
Not sure if this is the right thread, seemed to be the closest I could find. I got Skype and video calling to work, but I've noticed that when in a call, none of the buttons (mute, keypad, etc.) work. I often use skype when on conference calls to avoid the drain on minutes. I'm running 2.3.5 on an ATT skyrocket. Wondering if anyone else has that issue or knows of a work around?
thanks!

Does Skype recognize an internal microphone?
I've heard there is a problem:
"I had no problem installing the Skype app or logging into my account. But the app wouldn’t recognize the NOOK Tablet’s Microphone, which means it’s impossible to make voice calls. You can only use Skype as an instant messenger app on the NOOK Tablet."

I've got the latest Skype running but it has issues. It can send IM's without issue but voice phonecalls are buggy. When making an outgoing call to someone on a contact list the call is established but then drops immediately, and then an incoming call from the person you rang suddenly appears even though they didn't call you. For a while I had it answer a call and apparently seem to maintain it but on the Nook I couldn't hear the remote party - Skype seemed to be confused with the nofification volume and the media volume. When the notification volume was all the way down it muted the incoming sound completely. When the notification volume was up, that's when I couldn't get it to maintain a call. Very weird. Not really usable.
That was my experience anyway, would be interested in seeing what other people find with various versions.
Can you check which version of skype you are using so I can try it. The latest doesn't seem to recognize the microphone.

OK, so I thought I'd try this again and its a no go?! I had tested it initially with my wife's computer and she answered the call etc. Now it also drops calls as soon as picked up. My version is a "raider" version for this forum somewhere and not the lastest but a link for ppl having issues. Non the less, it's not working now
Which apk?
The android market says it is incompatible. I got an apk on the net, but it insisted on a mobile phone number.
It looks good, signs in and calls out but drops the call after about two rings. Does Skype need gps? I was thinking that if we could get a gps spoof running that might do it.
I was calling a landline which I had control of and it even rang so I'm close. I can tether to the gps on my phone but that defeats the purpose. I suppose I could do that to see if it's what skype wants.
actual apk

Wasn't sure I had it still - I have "com.skype.raider2-1.2.apk" in my downloads.
I've reinstalled it and it is acting the same as what i had installed.
Sorry I didn't keep more detail, but because it seemed to work, I didn't think much of it. I imagine now that I've done lots of other downloads, mods etc, something must of messed it up.
The most major one since then would have be the multi keyboard stuff. Either that or it was just a fluke that it worked. My wife is my participating witness tho
---------- Post added at 07:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:25 AM ----------
OK, a little more digging reveals two files. The raider2 one mentioned above and one named "Skype_2.0.0.47_v06.apk".
I tried to attach them but they are both over 9megs and the limit is 8M.
Having a gps signal didn't help. My theory was that Skype needed a location so that it billed properly.
Currently calls drop after two rings (which make it to the line being called) and advanced settings cause a force close.
It's too bad. being able to make the occasional call would really make this an even better vacation device for out of your home country.
---------- Post added at 09:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:23 AM ----------
A little bit of progress. The apk from this post rings the other number until connection then drops. Advanced settings still FC.

If you are asking for the Skype version, it's 2.6.501.97. If you need the apk file number.... uh, I'm still pretty new to android and even tho I can build and hack a pc, I'm having trouble naving my NT. I'm still looking for the file and I'll post it when I stumble over it.
Okay, I give up. How do I sent a chat message to someone? I can't find anywhere in Skype that has that option. Whenever I click on a contact, I only have the option to call them.
Anyone have any updates on this?

Hmm, skype video chat does work. Even does pretty good with the iPhone that a buddy has. This is just odd now....
Haven't tried skype but gtalk and tango are working fine.
I have tried Skype, Talk, and Google+ Hangout from my Rezound to a Rezound/Bionic/DInc2 and all of them work flawlessly. Not always best video quality, but they all work. Check your settings that you are actually sending video.
can you tell any us anymore information? was this over wifi? did you hear any audio? etc?
So I'm actually having this problem too.
I start google talk on the droid 3, click on the video icon next to somebody's name that supports vid chat. Screen goes black for a split second, then returns to the google talk contacts screen.
Interestingly, google hangout with google+ works great. As do tango and skype.
I'll post logcat output here in a bit.....

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm having this same issue on my new Galaxy S4. Did anyone ever resolve this?

[Q] Skype video on S3?

I cannot get video to work on Skype on my S3. Video is enabled in Skype Settings but still no joy. Has anyone else got this problem or know how to fix it? I can't find any thread about this. This is a deal breaker for me. If Skype doesn't work I will reluctantly return the S3 during my 14-day trial period.
Thanks
Works fine here. Just tested video calling 3G and WiFi with no problems.
Finger trouble or firmware version?
Skype v2.8.0.920
Edit:
The other party (Recipient) must also have video enabled.
You could also lower the video quality and test.

works fine here as well.
Thanks for the replies. Still a mystery. I have the latest firmware and the other party definitely has video enabled. I switched to other devices and it worked fine. The front camera does work but there's no option to select when I make a Skype call (over WiFi). If the other party calls me I can see the options but it still doesn't work and returns to a black screen. Lower-res test done as well but no luck.
I just can't see what's preventing a video call. I can do this quite successfully from my tablet, old phone and desktop but not the S3. I have uninstalled and downloaded the software again but it still doesn't work. Grrrrr!
Try a video call on Gtalk to test. Obviously check video is enabled in its settings for both parties.
If working, try wipe data/cache in settings/applications/downloaded or all/Skype. You well need to setup Skype settings, login etc again.
If still no good, reinstall Skype
Sent from my GT-I9300T using xda premium
I did clear the cache. And one other thing: I can't close Skype. I have to use a Force Stop to quit the application. I've tried this several times and it always remains running unlike any other program I close (eg, swiping to the left from the running programs list). It doesn't show up in the task manager as a running program but the icon is still there on the top left of the phone. I wonder if some other process/application is interfering with it.
It's reassuring that Skype is working for others. I'm on O2 - could they have set up something to prevent Skype working? That's not my experience with other phones from O2 and I doubt that is the problem.
So did you try Gtalk (to confirm the problem is just with the Skype app) and also reinstall fresh from Google Play?..........
To exit, just our press the [-> button on the top right hand corner of the main start page

Thanks, I'll check them out.
I've got what seems to be a fairly simple problem with Skype, so I thought I'd post here because Skype users are likely to read it ! :
Outgoing voice-only calls seem to work OK, but when I answer an incoming call, the GS3 screen goes completely black (regardless as to whether the phone was by my face or not).
I tried pressing buttons etc, didn't seem to be able to get it back until the caller hung up.
On a plus note, the call quality was great, but I really do need to be able to hang up the call!
Am I missing something obvious?
According to my tests, Skype video works when I'm connected to WiFi but I was never able to do the same under 3G.
I'm on a high bandwidth connection..but the person on the other side keeps saying that the video quality is ****ty. I have the Video Qualty setting on 'High'. The recieving quality is just great. Its only the video sent from my end. Is it the same for everyone? or just me?

No video call in Skype

I tried to use Skype last night and I wasn't able to make a video call. The camera button was there, but it had a red line through it and wouldn't let me select it. This was my first try with Skype so I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I had "enable video calls" selected in the settings. Is this an issue with it not supporting out displays....like it is with several other apps?

There is a modded version of Skype in the XDA Apps and Games section (I am mobile so I can't paste the link). It's the latest version of Skype but the dev has modded it to force enable video calling and a bunch of other excellent features. I am using it on my x920e and have used if for video calling. I've only used it over Wifi but it's supposed to work with 3G as well. Try it out and see if it works. If it doesn't then perhaps VZW has done something to block it.

new update from Tmobile

I just installed an update from tmobile something about bug fixes and security . Sorry was to busy to write down the details but hope it fixes the phantom touches..
UPDATE 2: Oh no, it actually made the phantom touches worse, now instead of just the top section where you have the camera droop the thumb coordinates would trigger buttons on that spot, but now with the update, according to the touch sensors from developer options it shows the left and right touch coordinates will trigger even more around the screen. I think it just broke this phone.
Can anyone pls confirm this. The update has made the phantom touches worse and now my phone is unusable to play games because it always triggers buttons I don't touch when I make certain movements playing the games or apps

Please enable developer options and then enable the two options, show touches and show touch data. On my V60 when I hold the phone horizontally as if to game using my left and right thumbs the touch data will show lines intersecting for each thumb press and the coordinates where the lines touch will show a circle indicating that point will trigger any onscreen button that it will touch. Can you pls try this, so I can see if I have a defective V60. Thanks

Thanks, I tried. Even had the phone replaced. T-Mobile thinks it might be the provisioning on my account, but I don't buy it since Google messages works. But I'm stumped, I can't even send a simple meme to someone on the stock app. I just says sending forever and never goes. I've tried wifi, 5g, 4g, resetting apn settings etc... Craziest dam thing

I get errors with screenshots that say can't send, then I retry and am presented with 2 options, retry with original size or send as MMS. The photos always go thru when I choose MMS. However, I have an issue with stock as well. Can't attach a gif, only sends a link, and no notification in AA unless it's a short code message. I'm getting real tired of having to switch to 3rd party to do those 2 things and then back again to see typing and delivery indicators and faster photo sharing.

You can use Google messages and get the RCS experience without switching back and forth. I would just prefer to use the stock app if it would work

The stock app is definitely much nicer then it used to be. I very much prefer it over Android messages when/if it's working. Thankfully like I said it just happened to start working for me again. Maybe it's just TMobile and google ironing out all the kinks who knows.

What's your favorite function or 2 of the stock app vs. Google Messenger?

I know the question wasn't aimed at me, but I like the ability to pin certain conversation to the top, schedule messages, and it just looks much nicer in my opinion

Those are two great options Google doesn't have. I use a scheduling app which is a nice work around.

Also google messages seems to be a pretty major battery drain at least it was for me in the past. Not sure if it is anymore.
I really wish they had a changelog for this update... Two of my main issues are the speakerphone phone calls cutting off and the auto brightness

How can you schedule messages on stock? I don't have an option for it

Nope, auto brightness is still broken
So far for me speakerphone seems to be fixed, haven't tested auto brightness to see if anything has changed.
