New to S2 Homescreen questions - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my S2 today and love it. But I have a few questions.
1. When I delete items on my home screen and don't add any I get this dumb message that stays on the home screen that I can't get rid off it say
"Press and hold this page to add content"
Well I don't want anything on their, so how do I get rid of that?
Thanks..

Never seen that .

open the folder and long press the name and an edit box will pop up

When I do that it just drags the folder to the home screen. Its a folder I created to put all the bloatware into. I want to name it bloatware, but all it says is folder 1.

Edit
Add Folder
Drag Folder to Page
Enter Name Box Opens
TYPE NAME
Yes
Close
= named folder .

I have a different question re the home screen - can you set screen 3 to be the default screen the phone goes to when you press the home button? Kinda makes more since being able to scroll a screen left or right.. starting at 1 means you can only go one direction..

I'm sorry, what?? What are you talking about? Your post is so incoherent it's frustrating. How does this have anything to do with what falcon26 was asking?
@falcon26: This is apparently another one of AT&T's "bright" ideas, and I agree, I hate looking at it. I wish those fuktards at AT&T would stop wiping their stinky, sh!tty codemonkey fingers all over my device. I can't wait to get my Otterbox commuter so I can cover up the stupid AT&T logo on the front.
Ranting aside, I don't think this message displays on blank pages of the international variant of the SGH-i9100 (someone correct me if I'm mistaken). I'm sure there is a way to remove it, but I'm not sure what that is. I would definitely appreciate it if someone would chime in and offer a permanent solution (i.e. what code/picture to remove from whatever .xml/launcher file/directory, etc.), but in the mean time, I have a band-aid that works around this and ultimately accomplishes the same thing.
1. Go to https://market.android.com/details?id=org.hk.sticky
2. Install Sticky Widget
3. Add Sticky Widget to the screen you want to remove the "Press and hold this page to add content" message from.
4. When you add the widget a preferences screen will pop-up. Set the background to "Transparent" and press "Set".
4. Presto! No more idiot message. Just be mindful of where you put the widget so you don't press it by accident.
@micks_address:
1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button.
2. Press Edit. Thumbnails of all your homescreens will then appear in a matrix, with the "Remove" trashcan icon at the bottom.
3. Press the Menu button again.
4. Then press "Set as Home".
5. Press the thumbnail of the screen that you wish to become the default Home screen.
6. Press "Done"
7. Done

[Q] Folder shortcut for quick links?

Is it possible to put a folder shortcut in the quick links menu such as games folder or office mobile? It would be a lot more convenient to have just the folder instead of each game put up and would save space. I am using cookies home tab btw if that is important at all. I tried searching and didn't come up with anything useful.thanks for the help.

Thil here I didn't find a solution. I hope someone-els can help you out if there is a way/solution.

quickly read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576232
haven't given it a go...care to read and see if it may work?
cheers.
you will need resco explorer for my solution.
1. navigate to the folder you want to add to quicklinks
2. long press on that folder to get a popup
3. select "send to" in the popup
4.at the bottom of the menu you will see "startmenu as a shortcut" choose that
5. go back to sense starting page and press "menu" on the lower right side
6. choose "edit quicklinks"
you will now see that the folder you want to add is already there
hope that helped...

Right now the screen move left and right when swipping. Would like it locks in place.

I did remove all the empty screens. However the one page screen still moving itself a bit to left or right. How to completely lock? I think only scrolling wallpaper in TW in inter Note or ATT S2 can do it. Not our Note

[Q] contact icon is missing

I dont know what happen. I woke up one morning and the contact icon on the bottom of the home screen is gone. I usualy have four icons there. Phone contact messaging and application. But now i only have three. I still could see contact icon inside application. how do i fix it?
Open application drawer, menu, edit, long press the relevant icon and put it back? Or similar, I forget the exact order of things in TW.
how do i do that? im running on stock ics. I didnt root
I just told you? What's unclear and why are you going on about root?
In the 'Phone contact messaging and application', click on the application icon.
press the 'menu/options' button - this is the left of the 3 buttons at the bottom of the phone. this will pop-up a menu. Select 'Edit' from this menu.
You can now move all the icons about. You can move icons from page to page and also from the page to the 'Phone contact messaging and application'.
Once you have changed it to the way you want it, select the 'menu/options' button and select Save.
This has been already answered, but I thought I would make it a bit clearer. There is no requirement to root the phone for this as it is a standard feature of Android.

[Q] TouchWiz 5 Home Screen Dock problems

Hi all newbie here and did a few searches and tried to look for help but could not find right info, also I hope I am in the right spot to post so please feel free to tell me if I am not in the right place. Currently running ICS 4.0.4 up-to-date at time of writing on Vodafone Australia but I don't think the country of service provider is the problem. I have a problem with my 'Home Screen Dock' NOT THE 'Lock Screen Dock' I can change icons on the lock screens no problems, All the help, forums and videos on changing the 'Home Screen Dock' Icons say to simply drag, drop[ and replace. All i wanted to do is change the stock "Internet" Icon with Chrome. Dragged the internet icon of and went to drag the Chrome one on but I can't as instead of the dock staying visible like on some videos it changes to the Delete Icon option. Cant find settings please help. Also I do not want to use a 3rd party launcher. I tried Apex and do like it but I use widgets and can't use widgets as my phone is not rooted. Please help arrrgghhh. Thanks in advance.
PS . I just have a blankspot where my internet Icon use to be.
Go into your app drawer.
Menu>Edit
Drag the Chrome icon down to the dock.

Thanks for your reply but I have tried that...the dock area only changes to for different Icon that you can drag your chosen icon onto in order to perform a function. these are from left to right "Create Folder" "New Page" "File Info" & "Delete"
Have you tried to hold on the Chrome Icon in the App drawer and put it on the home screen, THEN drag it to the empty space on the dock?

Yes I have and I get then get the same options expect it has text with each one i.e. *Icon with text"Create Folder" * *Icon with text "New Page"* etc
Has to be a step you are missing. I just tried it and it's working fine.

THanks for your help.... OK so here is what I do.
1) Unlock -> touch App Draw Icon. (Icon that says Apps with 16 little white squares)then I am on my last page/screen where I have a lonesome Chrome Icon.
2)Then I touch the Menu button (the glowing white button left of the physical home button).
3)Touch Edit (from the pop up menu *Edit with the pencil icon next to it)
4)The Page now has <::: Edit |Cancel|Save along the top of the screen under the notification bar. and no dock or anything at the bottom except for 6 . . . . . . white dots which represent my 6 screens.
5) Touch the Chrome Icon and drag downwards, but as soon as I press and hold the icon to drag at the bottom of the screen 4 icons appear that represent the function I described in my previous reply.
Please tell me I did something wrong. It should be so easy. Thanks btw.
1. Click on the App Drawer Icon
2. Press and hold on the Chrome Icon (that will move it to your desktop)
3. Now find it on your homescreen and press and hold it and drag it down to the empty space on the dock.
That's all there is to it.

Have you found the solution?
Hi,
I'm having the same problem, I was wondering if you've found the solution.
Also, since recently I'm having chrging problems with my S3 - sometimes it will charge, sometimes not - USB or Wall charger.
I tend to think these problems were introduced with latest software update.
I did factory reset, but problems still there.
Cheers.

TouchWiz used to allow me to follow the earlier procedure (it's how I docked "Maps" icon). This was back when I could also just drag and drop icons on the pages at will.
However there was an update from my telco (Telstra) and after that TouchWiz (as version 4.0.4) no longer allows changing of the bottom 'docked' row of icons. Even dragging and dropping icons generally is disabled it now requires use of the context menu to select "Edit page", first. The problem with that approach is that edit mode hides the dock row and replaces it with the icons "Create folder | Create page | App info | Delete". See attached screenshot.
So now I'm stuck with the useless blue-globe icon forever showing on my page, instead of being able to replace it with the very useful Chrome icon. Maybe Samsung did it accidentally (are they even the ones that develop TouchWiz?).
PS: If Micro$oft blocked the use of an alternate browsers, there would be loud screams of monopoly and anti-trust...
i to am also having the same problems, i am running stock Samsung Jelly Bean OS with a touchwiz home version 4.1.1. hope someone can find a way to fix this and to get our freedom back in it

Apparently this problem only effects Galaxy S4 GT-I9505
I found this solution:
you need to have root access (which is available on the xda forums)
you can unlock the dock icon edit function by going to /system/csc/other.xml and find
<CscFeature_Launcher_ReplaceHotseatAreaInEditMode> TRUE</CscFeature_Launcher_ReplaceHotseatAreaInEditMode>
Tried it using ex file explorer editor but nothing happened, restarted the device and the setting had reverted back to its original state, might have to do an adb push but the adb version I have installed is apparently outdated (keeps telling me the device is offline) so I'd need to update adb first
If anyone can give it a try to see if it actually works on rooted 4.2.2 with stock touchwiz, it would be really appreciated

Tons of thanks! :victory: Works great on GT-I9195T 4.2.2! Now, four left docked icons on homescreen could be moved.

I have been searching for help but found nothing.
My questions:
1. how do I get a blank front page ?
2. how do I create app folders on front page?
3. how do I fasten apps at the front?
4. how do I get rid of google on the first page?

1. You can't create a new blank page but you can drag widget or app to the new blank page at the far right.
2. Hold empty space on front page and you will see a checkmark on each app. Select the app you want to group then create folder.
3. You can lock home screen in the preferences -> home screen.
4. Hold empty space on front page, at the far left you can toggle on or off the google now page

Hi Mickey! Thank you very much for your answer. It certaintly send me on a heavy task as I moved some 130 apps to the blank pages, and it looks allright, except for the tiny "bobles" so i have to get new glasses Kurt
