[Q] About playing music from SD card using default music player - Sony Tablet S

Someone said the default music player can't play music from SD card directly. Is that true? I am considering which model (32GB or 16GB) should I buy.

I just tested this. You can play pretty much anything off of the ext sd card that your heart desires, without transferring anything. What I do is use 'es file explorer'. Open that up, and change your default "home" directory to "/" (without quotes) via the settings. This is the root directory of the system. There will be a folder called 'sdcard2'. Which is your external sd. Now you can browse for any file, and play any file you want. Of course, this folder will not be accessible if you just open the music/video player; unless you use the file transfer app. But just use a file explorer. Its the same thing!

But using a file explorer will not let you play all the songs at once. You can only play each song one by one...

This is true. So, you'd have to use the file transfer app for that. We need root!!! And all of these tedious issues would go away. I need to start running some adb commands. Lol!

Thanks both of you. Is that a android 3.X problem? or the app just search the specific music folder on internal storage, so it can play music from other directory.

What happens if you have an .m3u playlist file together with your mp3 list in the card, and open that one with an m3u app, for example?

Actually its a Sony issue. All of the other tablets that I've had (gtab, xoom, transformer) did not suffer from this issue. I believe that Sony did this to prevent users from "expanding" their storage. Its lame, but after root it would be an easy fix!
EDIT: Im pretty sure that third-party apps don't suffer from locating the ext sd card via their interfaces. I think its just the built-in Sony apps? Definitely not an android 3.x issue.

Hi,
Just tried this on my sony tablet, m3u opening is tricky but there's another, simpler way:
Install Astro Player Nova, for example
Then navigate to /mnt/sdcard2 and just select all mp3 files and let 'em rip!

Ok, guys you can play music or videos from the SD card but using a third party app like for music I use PowerAmp and for video Video MX and it works flawlessly.

still no good news about playing music SD card using the default music player??

Even more simple
With the Poweramp player you can select in the settings wich folders you want to be in your library included the one from your ext sd card. So you can play every album you have on it, shuffle it, make playlists etc...

Really stupid question...

Feel dumb cause I don't know this by now.... But is there any way to choose what folder my music plays out of? Because every time I listen to music it plays every sound there is on my card: music, ringtones, text tones, etc. And its incredibly annoying.

Perhaps organize the sounds, music, etc into separate folders on your SD card.
Music player should find the mp3's. This method works for me.
You can add a .nomedia file or search Play for a .nomedia manager.
I made a folder called music on sd card, its all that plays

The best thing to do is to connect to a computer and start organizing folders and then add .nomedia to the folders.

[Q] problem transferring music

I had this problem with my S2 as well; I connect my phone with usb debugging checked and copy paste all my music from the music folder on my PC to the music folder on my SD card.
I keep getting the error, " sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file"
Is there anyway to fix this or am I doing something wrong? The music is in mp3 format.
Can somebody please help me out? Thanks
Usb Debugging has nothing to do with normal file transfer.
What type of file extension are you trying to copy? Normal mp3 or some less common and/or proprietary format such as aac, flac, wma, ...

they are all MP3 format
Try copying your files to the phone throug Airdroid or another file transfer app.
Alternatively if you're rooted, you can use the Easy UMS app to mount your external sdcard on the computer.

I am rooted, where would I find the easy ums app? For now i will try using airdroid
So i copied and pasted my music to the sd card. Now when i try to play files, some work and some still give the same error message. Also when I click on a song, it automatically starts shuffling through the list but only stays on each song for a second. Im stumped!
I tried Isyncr and Isyncr wifi, both did not work. It shows that it has transferred 500 files but when I go to the music, theres only about 25 files there. The Isyncr process took about 25 minutes and it showed every song that was copied. But when i looked in the music and syncr folder, there were only about 25 songs, I dont understand why the rest were not copied????
It's to do with the media scanner not running. Download rescan media from market and run it and then give it a minute and try going back to music again and they should work. I don't know if there is a bug in the firmware but it's annoying.

Yes, I have exactly the same problems for a few of my mp3 files.
I maybe due to some permission issue with the files? Strangely, I can play
all the problematic mp3s directly from the file explorer but not from the player
or any other media players including winamp, real, BS Player etc.
Anyone got a solution for this?
Do the mp3 files have the same properties regarding bitrate...maybe it cannot play files with 320kbps or more or files vith VBR(varibile bit rate)

Well, no, they are all either 128k or 192k.
I also converted some flv files to mp3 with Real converter, the player also cannot play these converted mp3.

I too am on CM7 and put all my iTunes music on my X2. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to make your phone and iTunes sync directly with each other. What I do is I make a folder on my desktop and name it "Music", then I highlight all my songs in iTunes and drag and drop them into that folder on my desktop. I then plug in my phone and just copy that entire "Music" folder onto my phone's sd card using the simple drag and drop method. After that usually whatever music app you have can find the folder easily.

I have had issues transferring music to my phone as well. I've used windows media player, drag and drop and dropbox. Still won't play the music. It says it doesn't support this type of media. It seems it will only play mp3 files and not wma. Also I lose all of my album info and the songs show up as filenames and don't display the artist.

Yea very few media apps will play .wma files.
Give PowerAmp a shot, I think that will work. I know there is a paid version, not sure of there's a free version though.

[Q] Need an app that can browse a system directory and show MP3 metadata

Google Music stores it's my downloaded MP3 music on the internal phone memory on my Nexus4. I don't want to use any other player, I really like how Google Music gives me the best of both worlds, with regards to having my best stuff locally, and all music in the cloud.
However sometimes I want to copy a particular Mp3 from my phone to my computer. All the files are randomly numbered xxx.mp3, so I can't see which file is what track in MP3 explorer.
Anyone know an app that can browse a system directory (on a rooted phone), and show all the Mp3 metadata and allow copying of that file?

Music player won't read music on sd

I'm on a Stock sense ROM and I just added some new music to my phone, and I downloaded it from my phone. I used ES file Explorer to move the folder to my music folder (on my sd card), but my music player won't recognize the files. Any ideas?

Sometimes the phone can take a while scanning memory for media files. To speed this up, you can try opening an mp3 directly from ES File Explorer (tell it to open with your music app, of course), or you can try an app called "SDRescan." If those don't do it, my advice would be to delete the mp3s and re-sync them. I use Media Monkey, and as a heads up, I found that older versions of Media Monkey wouldn't sync everything properly, so I had to update to the newest version to remedy all problems.
