[Q] To root or not to root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure if this as been asked recently, but I have a question specifically for Intratech, I was wondering what you currently have running on your S2, ie xwki8 with touchwiz launcher or something else and is it rooted?

Don't you think a pm to intratech would have sufficed instead of this inane thread?

I never understood why someone won't root a device. It's 10 seconds process, besides absolutely nothing will be changed but you will have the root access, so why not do it! And if that query is addressed to a particular member then you should send him a PM instead of creating a thread!

Im my opinion it's worth rooting your device.
To keep as close to stock as possible use one of chainfires (cfroot) stock but rooted kernels. By using a cf kernel all should be as stock but you will get cwm, busybox and root.
Once rooted you can enjoy all the cool benefits of apps that require root like titanium backup, setCPU,etc, etc. Not to mention all the benefits of cwm like backups and flashing from your device, etc.
Just go for it.

Just thought I’d bring a happy end to this inane thread.
I finally managed to get some time to mod my phone, so its now rooted & running cyanogenmod 7.1, which despite been a massive improvement on the stock rom i used to have, is regularly giving me force closures, which are usually fixed by a quick search of xda, im goin preserve with it for a week or so in the hope that they do a update to blitz the bugs, if not then im thinking about giving miui a try until the modding community can get their hands on the source code and release a stable version of ICS.
Thanks for the advice 'aceofclubs' you’re a credit to this forum.

some people are too rude in their replies...Don't they think that not everyone is a geek in smartphones? I know that they will be zero or less than zero in my own subject or speciality...
If any one doesn't want to reply, then better not to reply instead of humiliating reply.

[Q] Most Stable, most compatible, most feature filled ROM? <ABRUPTLY TERMINATED>
Hey guys,
I have a very quick question, I want to know a ROM that is most stable, that has a lot of tweaks within a tweak manager, cool effects and keeps ALL the Galaxy S II functions (Camera).
I've tried CM7.1, I guess it's a great ROM to replace old device's ROM, but there are many functions removed from the stock Samsung ROM (Task Manager when hold home) and the Camera app (most important for me).
I'm just looking for the most stable (least or no bugs), cool tweaks (CRT/Overglow effect/Overclocking) and one that keeps Camera app to the stock one.
Lastly, if I were to flash a custom ROM, would I be able to flash back my speedmod kernel?
Thanks all
Nicholas
p.s. I would also be very happy if it came with CWM5

My view is that if they ask that same question then they are incapable of flashing stuff and end up with a bricked phone .

Sorry, I know MANY ROMS out there, but I want to know by first hand experience about everyone's thoughts about many of the new ROMs and the most stable ones that recently came out. I just want people's opinions, and not a written guarantee on a forum post. I'm very sorry if I caused so much of a nuisance.
If you want people opinions, why dont you spend time reading through the threads of those particular roms, they will give you all the feedback you need....

As I clearly stated before, I have flashed CM7.1 and have not bricked. I don't think I'm incapable of flashing, as I flashed many phones recently, and I made many USB jigs for my phone and my friend's phone, I'm not that kind of Android newbie as you think I am, I used MANY Android secondary phones in the past since Android 1.6, and I flashed many different kinds of ROMs on many other devices ever since.
This thread is only asking for NEW opinions on the latest ROMs for the Galaxy S II, I want to know through experience if you like it or not, if it's good to use and if it still retains complete factory functionality.
Amazing.......I actually would of thought people who actually value their time, would just write one word like "VillainROM" or "CM" or "Cognition" and then make it to be 10 chars in total.
Thanks, what amazing people here.

Anyways, since this is on the first page, any new guys to custom ROMs, this is the HUGE list, heard from Darkside and JJE from dozens and dozens of posts that it really depends on your taste of ROMs so there really isn't a "best" ROM, this is the HUGE list of ROMs:

I'm pissed just like him when I see the same carbon copied thread: "hello guys, because i am a very important person, i deserve special treatment and I want you all to find me the best rom, which fulfills the following requirements: x,y,z."
Come on... there's the forum, there are 100 similar threads open, read the descriptions, do something.
Well, it is a very generic and most commonly asked question as I checked around the forum, it would be best if a ROM list was stickied, so these types of questions would be eliminated.

As opposed to actually opening dev section and reading what each custom rom does .
If you are to lazy to do that then you are flashing a rom with no understanding of what you are doing or why that = bricked phone newbies cries help post .

True that JJE, I would hate when that happens - when people don't know what they're doing, brick their phones, and then start a new thread asking for help. I understand.
I took four whole days looking at this forum, through almost 200 threads thoroughly, but most people I presume want to do it immediately and want to know the best ROMs at that very moment.
But anyways, the thread I linked was stickied and was very helpful.

I'm a semi noob who has flashed a few ROMs and have read through alot of the threads in the developers forum trying to find the 'perfect' ROM for me. I'm currently running VillainRom 3.0. It works fine. However, I understand what the creator of the thread is looking for. I would also like to know what other people think is a great ROM and a brief explanation of why they like it. All the ROM threads in the development forum are full of people asking why this or that doesn't work or how do I fix this? I find it hard to find a reason to use any particular ROM from the information in those threads. To cut a long story short, why don't the elitist ROM wankers keep their comments out of these 'Best ROM' threads, even if it's been asked before, and let people who want to share information do so.
Oh yeah so VillainROM 2.5 and 3.0 are good ROMs. They've worked fine for me, and from what I've read of other ROMs I haven't been convinced to change yet.

Looking for clean ICS ROM [rooted]

I have the AT&T model and I want a ICS stock root without all the garbage apps and shenanigans AT&T forces on your phone.
I already looked around in the ROM directory and I did find this thread which seems to match what I'm looking for: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752232
Is the ROM in this link a pre-rooted ROM?
But I need to be careful to keep my phone rooted as I don't live in America anymore and I don't want my phone to get locked or I cannot receive calls.
I am currently using a stock gingerbread ROM rooted.
I recommend Task's ASOP rom I have been using it for months through many updates and it just keeps getting better.

Search for creepyncrawly's guide to flashing. No offense, but you've got a lot to learn, buddy. And uh, I wouldn't post asking questions like "I want this kind of ROM" or "help me learn how to flash again" until you've read a lot, since people around here highly discourage that kind of thing. Just warning you in advance.
Fair enough,
In my defense though I did not ask for explanations in the thread, but links for me to read and figure it out myself : /
EDIT: I tried searching for creepyncrawly's guide and came out empty handed. These forum search functions never work properly, can someone just link me there?

If you're rooted you can skip to installing a custom kernel, yes. Make sure to read the flash counter though, it's important that you know how to do that.

Make sure you have clockwork mod installed, if you did not flash a custom kernel you may not have it. If you don't you may need to flash a custom kernel and then go from there. If you know how to get in recovery try to and see if clockwork mod shows up. If its the default recovery you will need to flash a custom kernel from there you can flash whatever rom you want.

This is a self-service forum. Asking people to provide links is just as bad as asking them to do the research for you. There are FAQs and Stickies that cover much of the basics and the search function to fill in the gaps. Even Google searches often return results that end up here. I'm glad you can read for yourself, so start finding things on your own and you'll get/cause a lot less grief in here.

Just read the first few pages of each thread that interests you, Itll help you and XDA as A whole. I've yet to brick my phone, I've gone thru numerous roms. I'm sort of in the same boat, I'm on UnNamed and now with official ICS out I'm looking at development and reading up again and it's getting confusing because I see AJs rom and it seems nice but I don't seem to see (correct me if I'm wrong) Entropy as active on kernel development and UnNamed has sort of been "abandoned" other than Ryudes project. I guess what a lot of people are hoping for is an "UnNamed" style ICS with a very stable stock based kernel, all stock flame aside, that's 100% daily driver capable. I like 2.3.4, does everything I need my phone to do daily, I rely heavily on gps and bluetooth for driving which are some of the issues I read about with the ported kernels, as well as various mic swap stuff which is intimidating to be completely honest. Does anyone know if there is work on something stock based with a DD style kernel? I know this is fairly new ground so I'm not wanting to come off as ungrateful for the work that is going on and that has been done.

I respect everyone's answers and tolerance. Please keep in mind though while this may be seem trivial to the advanced users this can be very confusing/overwhelming for noobs. I am grateful for the guidance provided thus far and can say I am making a solid effort to figure this out on my own.
I have successfully flashed the ICS ROM/Kernel provided by creepy with the help of the forum members. I did make a few mistakes though, I did not wipe the Dalvik cache or data, and did not bother performing a factory reset before hand. Either way, the phone is running fine aside from my wallpaper image not panning through desktop windows, apparently this has been discussed before; but searching the forums, google, and few pages of threads has been fruitless.

Yes, I agree that preparing to flash something on your phone when you start with no knowledge can be confusing, and overwhelming for some. There are clearly differences in how the mind works from one person to another. Some pick up technical issues fairly quickly, others (my wife, who is a musician with creative temprament, for instance) have difficulty even retaining the technical information they have already learned.
However, you flashed UCLE5 stock plus root from the OP of my thread in the development forum without first doing a wipe data/factory reset. So did you read through the text of the OP of that thread and fail to understand what was written there, or did you just not read it? If you are the type of person that doesn't grasp technical issues easily or at all, then you should not be messing with your phone. This is a ~$500.00 device which you could easily destroy if you do the wrong thing.
Or... you should take as long as you need to fully understand what you are doing, even if it takes weeks or months before you flash anything. Let go of instant gratification for once.
I sure hope you followed the OP of the thread and flashed a custom kernel. If you haven't, then whatever you do, Do Not Do A Wipe Data/Factory Reset while the UCLE5 kernel is still installed.
Further, you have started several different threads and posted in others, all about the same issue, which is very close to spamming the forums. Please make yourself aware of the rules of this place, and conform to them.
As far as the wallpaper issue, I find it hard to believe that you could search and find absolutely nothing on this. All the ICS leaks contain this bug, or feature. The new SGS III also has the exact same issue. You can set a portrait wallpaper but not a scrolling one. There are a multitude of wallpaper programs on the Google Play Store that will fix the issue. You can also install another launcher, such as Apex, to fix the issue.

*Sigh* I just don't see the point in arguing any more
Everytime I try to flash the rom, it tells me installation aborded after 2 or 3 seconds, I read the entire post from top to botom including the seperate post where he talks about bual-booting, and I haven't found my answer. I have looked on other forums, but haven't found a suitable answer.
Finally, I have one point I would like to clear, it clearly states in the siyah post that I CAN have asop primary/samsung secondary. I assumed samsung meant stock, but if I was wrong, could someone point that out?
You won't be dual booting a stock, unrooted rom. You need to get a 4.1.2, touchwiz based custom rom - that's rooted. I recommend latest wanam lite. You can find it in the android development sub forum
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
also like to add that you will find dual boot options in stweaks
I have efficiently managed to dual boot, and I am not having any problems with any of the 2 roms, which is great, I thought it would kind of slow me down but I'm reallt happy
There is one annoying thing though,I probably should have thought about this, but I don't have any data on my second rom (touch-wiz one) all I have is the all share cast data from January, so all I have are my contacts. I was wondering if I could put my 1st roms data on the 2nd one, or if I have to start fresh, since this isn't mentioned in the siyah post, I guess the answer must be clear, but I don't see it. :/
In conclusion, can I put my primary rom data on the secondary rom, if so how?
use titanium backup
Yep. Titanium.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Ummm... Noob question , I've been trying to work titanium,I've made the back-ups of all compatible apps and system data, but when I boot the second rom, I can't restore the datas, so I have no idea how to do this... :/

Completely new to rooting.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum. Even though I got my account created in 2006 on this website I never used it.
All over the internet and the forums people mention about rooting the phones. I never really cared about rooting my phone out of the fear of bricking it. So I always put that option away. Now its serious time to learn it, as I am understanding the real benefits of it.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Note LTE SGH -i717D which is from the carrier Telus in Canada. How do I start of with rooting on this device? What is the latest version of Android available for this device for rooting? Are the custom ROMS really flawless?
Somebody please kindly help me get rid of the starting trouble I have.
Thanks all.

Custom roms vary in stability. If they are based on source code they are going to be more stable than others. They will say "built from official source". Other roms can be just as stable depending on the developer and how much effort was put into the rom. You have to read the threads on the roms to compare issues if any, then pick the one you want to try.
The best advice I can give you is before you install or flash anything you verify it's for your device, and read the instructions at LEAST twice!
Welcome to xda ... I suggest you first read the xda rules. This is the general forum. Not for questions. There is a Q &A forum to ask questions in ... After searching.
That said ... Super everything thread is for you.

That link works basically for all i717's but the OP has a Canadian Note and it requires another step.

Whoa, that's freakin bizarre that it does an auto reinstall of the stock recovery. very creative.
Wow, Thanks to everybody who got involved. I didn't know that I had this many replies, I just got a notification for the first reply. Thanks a lot.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum.
Thanks all.

Admin, my intention isn't to hijack this thread. But I thought I'd ask prior to starting a new thread since I having the same concern, and before I get flamed. Please let me know which approach would be suitable to ask more questions while staying on topic.
I've been researching and reading tons of information everywhere. However I reached the conclusion that the more I read the more confusing it became. Whenever I thought I was ready to take the plunge, It's so overwhelming even figuring out what's current or what's outdated methods and files needed - I simply can't catch up without direct assistance.
OP: Thanks so much for starting this thread. For me, being a long time Android OS lover, yet entirely newbie when it comes to rooting jargons - I couldn't have said it any better - you took the words right out of my mouth!!!... The only tiny difference is that I have the SGH -i717R (Rogers).

Hi Lousk,
I know its really hard for a newbie to even think of where to start when it comes to rooting, because there are tons of information on rooting all over the internet and moreover confusion too. I learned it the hard way and I am glad to say now that I came out with flying colors. As with each official update, my device was getting totally sluggish, non responsive and out of all very little battery life. I couldn't stand this at all, one evening I sat on the internet, took the whole night before starting to do on anything with my device.
I didn't install any custom roms, but I rooted it which in turn helped me turn off a lot of services running in the background and also uninstall all the Samsung bloats, mainly the touchwiz. That thing is really resource hungry. Now my device is working at lightning speed and I have a feeling that it wont be obsolete in another 10 years.
I have all the files and also the instructions on rooting on my drive, unfortunately XDA is not allowing me to paste the link over here unless I have made 10 posts. They say it is just to prevent spams. If you are willing to give me your email id I can sent the link to you.
Go ahead and root your device to get the full potential of your unit.
Good luck,
Sumesh

[Q] General help with my SGS2!

Hi folks!
I want to buy a new SGS2, I'm coming from the Xperia arc Forums, and have some questions, cause Noob guides didn't really help me..!
So here we go:
1: On Sony devices theres a bootloader, and you can unlock it, but not every device can get unlocked, is it the same here?
2: What is the difference between "Original Android Development" and "Android Development"? The Arc Forums just have the 2nd one.
3: On Arc Forums you can flash kernels with a unlocked bootloader only, and flash firmwares with a program called "Flashtool" and Custom ROMs with CWM. My question: How can I flash firmwares to the SGS2? Is there such program too or what is it?
(I already found out how to root )
Well, that are all my questions for now! I hope you guys can help me!
Regards,
intel_c0re
Welcome to the S2 forums......
IMO the S2 (although not a cutting edge phone) is a nice phone.....
Samsung bootloaders are not locked....no ussue....
Root and cwm are usually contained in the same custom kernel.....some of which can be flashed from the stock recovery (search for PhilZ)
Other kernels (and firmwares) need to be flashed by a program called ODIN.....which I guess is similar to the program you mentioned......
ODIN seemed daunting at first...but if you do enough searching and reading (plenty of threads here) you won't go far wrong.
As for the difference between 'Android Development' and 'Original Android Development'......not entirely certain....there may have been a difference to begin with.....but what difference there was...seems to have been 'muddied' over time.......
Finally.....
I don't know what things were like over on the Sony forum, but here there's an unwritten but 'vigorously enforced' rule.....
Search, read, learn, understand then do.....
*some* folks here have a very short fuse when it comes to answering questions that "noobs" have created new threads for (without searching first).......remember the above rule; and you'll get a lot out of this forum.....
Good luck mate...
EDIT.....
If you buy the phone new, the FIRST thing to check is whether it's running ICS 4.0.4.
If it is, be very careful......
Search for emmc brickbug for details.....there's a 'stickyed' thread about it in one of the sections. Read it fully to understand the issue before doing ANYTHING to your phone.....

You don't need to root. Just flash a custom recovery, then wipe data+cache in recovery, and flash a ROM. As simple as that. No extra steps required.

Lol this forum is a lot more vicious than the Sony ones.
Read up about backing up your efs folder and get Odin set up on your PC so you can revert back to it....same as you would with flash tool.
Yes, and some people (particularly the ones with an IQ below 25) have a habit of always spoonfeeding everyone even the most basic information that's been posted here thousands of times before, and almost always in the preceding few days. Which actually increases the prevalence of busted phones, I.E people who learn stuff for themselves tend not have that happen.
This is one of the reasons why many (more & more these days) people here get so 'short', as much as n00bs asking the most dopey questions time & again and being too lazy to search through some threads.

You should go a little easy on the answering guy's(about the IQ 25 guy's I think most are newbies trying to increase post count.. Lol) , because as far as I am concerned google search produce's solutions for most problem (a little confusing yes, but anybody with a little patience can understand them), on that basis most questions asked here are "lazy" questions, but still most people are answering here because they want to, nobody is forcing anybody to do so after all, just some time ago you solved a guy's problem by suggesting him to use a Static IP, that solution can be easily found through Google, but still you choose to answer, people tend to be people and want everything to be easy, (why do you think a graphical interface is necessary nowadays) some are plain idiotic and will jump without thinking, I don't support spoonfeeding but giving a small description and suggesting to read is always a good answer.

Thanks to the guys who helped me here! If I get problems I'll post here, I hope you can still help me then!
I'll purchase the phone on Saturday and start working on it. I'm not sure because I couldn't watch in the settings and I never had a phone of the Galaxy series, so, is this GB or ICS? tbh it looks a bit GB for me but what do you think? I've posted an attachment.
Thank's for your attention!
So much butthurt in this thread (Particularly the OP who's a lazy n00b & some other guy who's of no consequence).

^^^^^ if only there were people like this guy when I first started on the s2!!! Luckily there are a few others who will also help out but things get easier over time. As for the lock screen, looks like GB but always worth checking in settings to be 100% custom themes can be found on play store and finally realise how many there are since my 3 year old has now taken over the s2 as a toy and changes everything daily

Friend, you should learn to show some respect, as the saying goes "give respect and get respect". Everybody was a noob once, I respect you, since I myself have learned a lot from you directly and in-directly, but showing disrespect to noobs as well as people who answer's is wrong, which as Sun90 said is bad for your stature, "to err is human" everybody makes mistakes nobody can be perfect all the time, if you find somebody is wrong or has made a mistake, politely correct them, who know's maybe the other party could be a genius who made a mistake, who are we to insult them? I really do hope you take this message the right way, as I mean no offence to you.
Keith, buddy I really appreciate what you are doing here, because pointing people in the right direction is always right. :good:
