Tv out thru headphone jack - HTC EVO 3D

I noticed that a bunch of roms have this feature in there changelogs so i bought the cord with a male 3.5mm jack and the colored RCA jacks on the other. I plugged in my evo and tried to play a movie and.all i could hear is audio. I was not able to view video on any of the format settings in the tv out menu.... If u have had sucess with this please let me know how u did it and what i may br doing wrong. Ive searched for a solution but couldnt find it. So thanks in advance for anyone who responds.

I'm going to chalk this one up as a "phantom mod" (something I just now made up) like the camera mods going around that offered 2mp fronts, 8mp main cams. Etc. Sure the option might be there, but that doesn't mean it was ever meant for our phone and just doesn't work.
Sure, they "unlocked" it. But our phones just aren't capable of doing it so it doesn't work.

I do agree mostly with felacio on my test. Most headphones are 2 stripes on the jack, I tested an av cable with 3 stripes (video, l, r). There is a cable on amazon that is 4 stripes that I have not tested. Until someone tests that cable out, I can not fully say that this is a phantom mod. Are we 100% sure the camera mod is not doing anything? I never really tested as I dont take pictures...i just think some mods will work in the right scenario like beats audio - not advertised, but it works - even if people say its not needed, it does work...if it didnt, we would get the same sound output whether we had it enabled or not, and it is definitely different than stock.

I made the Rever3nD Camera mod. Unlocked 2mp front, HDR, Scenes, Panoramic, and I later unlocked 8mp (never uploaded that version though). The only thing that really worked was the panorama shots. So I stopped working on it.
Beats does "work" as far as I can tell you can get the same result with DSP Manager but... Name recognition is a strong draw.

I agree that Beats is just a DSP setting. I don't think that it actually does more than what you can get with a good signal processor. The problem is that I don't think our phone has a good built-in processor. Also, I think it would take a good audiophile to recreate the beats feature exactly with just the DSP as I don't believe it is just increasing the bass and decreasing treble. So, while people have a problem with the name that comes with beats, it sure is easier to select that than try to get the same effect through the processor. I would love for an audio guru to figure out exactly what to set the DSP to so that we can get the same effect...maybe then we can add it as a preset instead of having it built-in to the ROM.
Thanks for clarifying the camera mod. I wasn't saying you were wrong, I just missed out on the discussion about it not working correctly. So much for having an 8mp camera. Still think taking 3d pictures is awesome, so no biggie.

HDMI resolution

Hi there,
I was checking the HDMI out on Xperia S and I came up with this. I changed the resoultions from 720p to 1080p , i didn't saw any difference. Does this really change the resolution of HDMI out? Anyone tried it?
The phone still outputs 720p scaled to 1080p. It just does the scaling for the tv. Duplicating a display is easy, running two would be a challenge for a phone GPU.
I tired 720p and 1080p, there was no difference i saw. my monitor is 23", maybe scaling would better work with 50". Right?

No, you misunderstand me. Its 720P either way because the screen on the phone is 720. It'll always be 720.
If you set it to 720P: Phone -720->Monitor-Upscales("stretches")-You see it.
If you set it to 1080P: Phone-Upscales-1080->Monitor-You see it.
Either way its just stretching 720p. At the same viewing distance it will look WORSE on the bigger screen. That said, I watched an SD movie with the gf the other night on a 50" tv using my XS. We were about 8 feet away and it looked fine. Using it on my desktop 22" it is kinda noticeable though. Not too bad though:
that was well explained. Thanks.

Does your TV go to 24p when you plug your phone in? I couldnt tell from your video, mine goes to 24p and has massive input lag which makes games unplayable!
Also if you play music does the equiliser have any effect on the sound? Mine has zero bass and the equiliser has no effect at all
Go to the service menu. There are advanced settings for HDMI out. You can set the resolution up to [email protected] hz.
The equalizer is an another story. It has nothing to do with equalizer. The phone applies some kind of high-pass filter for the HDMI out sound as if it thinks it plays the sound through its own external speakers. The cut-off frequency seems to be around 100 hz or so. This is some kind of software bug and I hope Sony will fix it!

Works fine. No noticeable delay. That was a monitor (Dell ST2210) so no audio(used a pair of headphones to just play in the background for the camera).
When I used it on a 50" LG TV the sound seemed fine. Was just a movie but there was some music and I didnt hear anything unusual(I'm a DJ so I'd pick up on it rather quick).
From other threads it seems that some tvs just dont play nice, try a few others and see what happens.

Well it depends on TV speakers but normally you shouldn't be able to tell the ~100hz cut-off on the tv since the TV Speakers aren't exactly made for low frequency sound
I'm connecting my phone to the Sony DA2400ES AV Receiver which in turn connected to the tv and a good sound system. I was planning on using this phone to bit stream flac's LPCM through receiver since my receiver doesn't have a way to connect a media storage. But unfortunately the sound is FUBARed

Yeah, the reset sucks My phone had .67 since the day I bought it. The sound was the same.
On a side note. To my knowledge 24hz is a standard for movies (24 frames per second) so every TV should support 24hz. But on the PC monitors it is the other way. 60hz is a standard for LCD monitor and 24hz support is optional by specifications. So yea, it is possible that the phone, being connected to the monitor, first of all tries to set 24hz and fails, then sets 60hz.
I hope there will be some way in ICS to configure audio/video output and to save those settings.
Edit: Oh! I also forgot to mention that I started a topic on the HDMI audio issue on the official Sony Xperia forum and Sony representative confirmed this behavior. He also launched an investigation! As of now I cant post links here (need 6 posts) but if you check Sony forums and search for the topic named "HDMI audio problem (high-pass filter?!)" in the "Xperia S" directory, you should easily find it! Right now it is on the second page.
For a personal point of view I let the tv handle upscaling, it seems to do it better than the phone.
As for sound, that is plain nasty on hdmi. If I use a standard 3.5 mm lead it is great, even on the tv, but yeah, hdmi is just bad. No bass, it just sounds tinny and generally low quality.

Yep 24p is for movie playback, not all sets suport it though which leaves panning scenes looking ropey on blu-rays etc.
Im playing the sound though an expensive amp and speakers via the TV of course and have no low freq at all

Problem with head phone jack?

I can not get a good sound no matter what I do. I have always used power amp and never had a problem with sound. With my epic I always ran music thru my car stereo and it rocked. With this phone I got so mad today at how bad it sounded I just turned off.
I have tried every adjustment I could but no dice. It just sounds distorted no matter what I do. Do u think I have a defective one? Like I said my epic would rock and sounded so good so u would think this phone being the 3rd generation it would be better in sound quality also. I have tried the stock player to and it sounds worse.
Edit: forgot to mention I also had beats flashed onto the epic too.

Try the app from the play store called Volume+. I've used it only to modify the external speaker for better quality on other devices, but there are options to modify sound for the in call speaker & headset also. You'll want to select headset obviously as it just refers to audio out via the 3.5mm jack. I hope this helps you & your able to adjust the audio profile for better quality, as I've had success with this app, but I haven't used it on the gs3 yet?
I'll give that a try. I am also getting a buzzing at the beginning and around the
Middle of songs to. It's about a 1-2 s3 one buzz
Edit: just looked it up. Doesn't work on the Sprint version of the GS3 yet.

Ok, well there are other apps if you google search or search the play store & also look at the roms in your dev section & I will almost guarantee one of them has dsp manager or some sort of audio equalizer app included.
Now the buzzing noise is 95% one of two things. 1) The auxiliary outlet in your car stereo has an issue or it just gets a poor connection, this can happen sometimes in lower end after market head units or for other various reasons I'm sure.2) The auxiliary cable your using is causing it because of a short or because cheaper cables just get a ****ty connection & thus provide ****ty audio quality. Try buying a more expensive one and give it a shot as soon as you get to the parking lot, if the problem persists then you can walk right back in & tell them its not what you needed & get a refund. 3) Your phone has a bad 3.5mm jack. (This is possible, but probably the least likely)
Please report back what your results are after trying these few possible solutions. I think you'll have a viable fix here soon. I hope this helps out.
It's not a cheap deck lol it's Pioneer. The buzzing does it with the stock head phones and my after market jvc earbuds.
If I turn the volume up (headphones) halfway it's starts to sound distorted. With my epic I could rock the volume the whole way up with out any distortion.
I'm starting to wonder if it's the Jack. It's bad lol

I would take it back to Sprint it sounds like there is something wrong with the phone. Unless its the MP3 you are listening to is bad quality.

I am evaluating. Even if I keep it, it remains to be seen if I will move away from the Nexus community. Open source spoils ya and I'm not too happy on how its locked down, even if it can be worked around.
Re: Beats
It takes upgraded speakers to withstand the amp, IME. I have a laptop with 6 speakers and a sub inside and the amp inside the laptop even pushes them to the edge sometimes. I've actually come close to blowing out some cheap skullcandy over the ear headphones
I have also found that some music sounds a lot better with Beats turned off (although the amp still has a part in that).
Sorry, but Beats Audio over the built in speaker is totally pointless. It will not make a blind bit of difference. I'd recommend one of these and at least then you wiill get decent sound if portability is a problem.

a beats speaker could give higher quality audio and higher output sounds, its about the same size of an in ear... and no thanks, i was just wondering because this is my first time with an htc phone, and the commercials always made it seem as if dr dre actually used his speakers and not jus endorsed each other lol
I used Klipsch Image one and Klipsch M40's when I had my One X and would always, I mean always, turn off the equalizer because it would just make the sound muddy and drown out the speakers with bass. From what I understand, this is really just a software equalizer for the headphones.
Still never understood how audio quality and Dr. Dre = Monster branded Beats by Dre.

Unlike the One X, this has upgraded hardware too.
From HTC's press release:
Authentic Sound
The DROID DNA by HTC has a unique, 2.55-volt, built-in headset amplifier and dedicated amp for the external rear-speaker to help boost the audio signal to deliver crystal clear sound with less distortion, even at maximum volume. The combination of amplified hardware and the rich, authentic, studio-quality sound of Beats Audio™ allows music to be heard the way the artist intended, and enhances the sound quality while playing games or watching video.

Not that it's necessarily a big deal. All speakers are connected to an amplifier. It could be a 1 watt amp or a 2,000 but all speakers need a decent amount of juice to make power them, relative to other components.

I'm getting this also on my new DNA . The thing is , it's a problem because you can't change the settings even with beats headphones in . I have four different types and the settings are not accessible with any of them plugged in, it still says the same thing, not accessible through speaker when the headphones are plugged in so something is messed up. If you can't change the beats settings with beats plugged in then what's the point of even having the freaking setting ? It's really annoying.

I have four different types and the settings are not accessible with any of them plugged in, it still says the same thing, not accessible through speaker when the headphones are plugged in so something is messed up. If you can't change the beats settings with beats plugged in then what's the point of even having the freaking setting ? It's really annoying.

Bad / low audio from this phone

Hey guys, does anyone have this issue? The audio from the loudspeaker is just crap, and also the position of it is away from the screen?? What sense does that make? I'm trying to watch a video, not broadcast the video's audio to everyone in my general area (except me).
Now that's a physical problem and can't be fixed. What I'm really mad / inraged about is the jack audio. Any type of headphones I plug into is extremely quite. Compared to my old phone (xperia play) I can't hear anything....is this normal? Does anyone else have any similar problems? I can't even wear these outside and listen to music, the wind and car noise is far louder. I'm forced to bring my old xperia play instead just to hear something (which btw, it's like twice as loud on this phone) and if that's going to be the case every day then it's time to sell this Evo 3D.
Another side note is that the range of the audio is also not very good, I can hear it struggle with high ranges as it makes "pops" in the audio...very disappointing..

My audio has always been fine, but maybe you could try using an EQ or something (might need to be rooted)

It's possible that my phone is faulty, but let me ask you this; what volume is your phone at when you think it's fine? I have to place mine at max to be "fine", not great, but fine. While the xperia play is at 50% being just fine.

I personally keep mine at 30% - 40%, it's a comfortable volume. Anything past 70% is a bit too loud. Do you think it may be your headphones..? Or it could possibly be a software issue like your ROM.

Originally I thought it was my rom, so I flashed another; same issue, so then I flashed the RUU...same issue. Tried different headphones, same issue, tried the same headphones on different devices...works completely fine at loud audio. Guess the phone is screwed. It already doesn't have any gsm radio connectivity.

Yeah, a hardware issue would make sense if nothing else is working.

Are you using the HTC headphones? Because after plugging in the original HTC headphones it came with, I found that these headphones are loud and working correctly. So it seems that any other 3rd party headphones will not duplicate the same result. That is unfortunately because I hate the htc ones, they don't cancel out background sound at all. They all have the exact same jack, 3 rings, same size, etc. But the HTC one is different. When plugging those headphones into my xperia it gives an error and says they aren't supported. So it's obvious that HTC put some type of technology into them that differs them from regular headphones.
Edit: Alright, so I tried yet another pair of headphones lying around and they work fine too. Is it possible that I tried the worlds only two headphones that don't work well with this phone? In any case, I'm no longer mad about the jack audio, it's obviously fine. But the loudspeaker is and always will be an issue, which sucks but oh well.

Nope, using third-party (JVC) headphones. Good to see you've got it sorted out though. Also I agree about the loudspeaker, it's a piece of crap. My old Evo 4G had a better one.
My phone is quite loud!
On mwakious Rom and it has tweaked audio settings.
It's gsm but maybe try the xloud mod available. Should improve audio volume

Audio - Output Level

I've got a couple of requests, both audio related. Hoping ROM and/or kernel developers might be able to help out...
1. A global gain setting/boost for the headphone jack. For those that use the headphone jack with, say, an Aux In to a car stereo, you really have to crank the stereo to get decent volume. It's probably a good 20-25% lower output than my iPhone 4. The Play Store boost options are unreliable and only work for apps that don't include their own built-in EQ.
2. Toggle to disable the LG feature that turns the volume down automatically "to save your ears" when you plug something into the jac. It's a good feature for headphone users, but a real annoyance for those using Aux In on another device. Plug in, crank the LGOG, crank the stereo and you've got a listenable signal.
Thanks.

If volume plus doesn't do it for you then Idk what to tell you. Other than it works fine over bluetooth and drives my giant sennheisers via 3.5mm with aplomb (w/volume plus)

I noticed mine sounds fine with headphones but when using the aux cable its super low.. not just volume but sound quality is definitely lacking... has anyone tried DSP on their rooted G yet?

Again, the booster apps only work for apps that don't include their own EQ. So it's fine for Pandora but not for, say, Subsonic.
Best way to do this would be with a system-level tweak. I had a Nook Color and they had extremely low audio levels. A dev added this feature and all worked great.
Clearly I'm not alone in being annoyed by this issue.

In the interim you could just not use subsonic and use a simpler music app...

I tried today with my Tones, didn't change a thing. None of the settings changed anything.
I'm pretty down about the volume issues too.., my only real beef with this bad Larry..I'm on base 0.7, running well, w/custom kernel too. One weird thing that got me confused is a few apps, all "audio" related, power amp(very few issues in 2+yrs) volume+ and 2-3 more won't open, nothing happens, been through every step that should be needed for fixin this, kinda boggled. Oh, I gotta check but on linpack, base .05, stock kernel, my phone killed it and snagged 4th and like 19th highest overall, the 19th was under clocked too multi thread, /Rob/Boston

Well,I found a fix for #2 in my original post. I wanted to find an app that would let me use the iPhone volume and track buttons on my workout headphones. I grabbed Headset Button Controller.
Turns out that it works great and includes a feature to automatically put the headphone jack to any specific volume level when something is plugged in. Perfect.
