how durable are the buttons - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used HTC hero for nearly 2 years, and at first I was worried about the buttons gets less responsive if I press more, but they are still working fine, not sure about the galaxy buttons... any ideas?

The build quality is pretty good on the S2. Button presses feels solid. (Much like the iphone 4 power button)

Home key responsiveness

Hi, I'm considering trading my razr for a rezound (mainly due to form factor).
One issue that I've noticed on all of the display models I've tried is that the home key doesn't always recognize my touch. Sometimes it would take quite a few tries before it would vibrate and do anything... maybe holding it longer or pressing down helped, but I suspect I was imagining that part. The other soft keys seemed fine.
Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Is this a known issue? Is there just a trick to it? I didn't see it mentioned here previously, but I've experienced this at at least 3 different stores, so it's not just one bad device. Concerns me as this is quite a frequently necessary function. When you're demoing a phone and can't get it to go to the damn home screen, it's hard to convince yourself to commit to that phone for the next two years...

Mine always works fine.

I've never had a problem either. Those demo phones get beat up sometimes, so I wouldn't go by that.

Home button broken?

Had my black s2 nearly two months and have noticed my home button is slightly indented and not level withe the screen like my friends white s2.
Anybody else have this problem or is it normal as the button still works.

The button may just be settling or you always press it on the spot where it tends to sag towards

Home key durability?

Just picked up a sgs2 from negri this week. I am coming from a nexus one which had a power button issues. Even though I didn't have the problem I was still cautious and used a reboot app which had options to reboot , turn off and reboot to recovery.
Now with sgs2, I noticed I am hitting the home key a lot and became worrisome. Have any of you guys have or had any problems with the home key?

I've had my s2 for over a year and am a very heavy user and it's still great

one year and going good
Eleven months and no problems, and I use the home button A LOT. The phone may not look the best built (that accolade goes to the iPhone 4...) but I haven't heard of any aesthetic hardware problems.
Thx guys. It makes me feel better that I got the sgs2.

Why do people love on screen buttons?

I know they can change with the apps which is cool and all but id much rather have the extra real estate that comes with capacitive ones. Plus, if an app freezes with onscreen buttons then you have no choice but to reboot the phone

Honestly, 6 in one, half dozen in the other.
My tablet has the soft keys and I really don't notice the difference as far as performance.
I think on some of the other device's where you see them all the time it can take away from the look, but on this phone they disappear so nicely when not in use I actually prefer them to the soft keys

Agreed why waste screen realistate

This. At least if you have hardware buttons, you also have the option for the on screen buttons. Not true the other way around. Plus, the way ours disappear so nicely like they aren't even there.
I think this thread really puts the real estate issue in perspective:

Look at how much more visible screen we have yet the LGOG and Nexus are the same basic size. I will take capacitive buttons over hardware and on screen buttons.
I won't buy a phone without some form of hardware buttons. Just don't like the on screen deal. Yes it's neat but when I buy a 4.7 inch screen that's what I want

Power Button

Can I just say, this power button is nice. It feels nice. When I click I feel like... BOOM. Success. Accomplishment. Happy feeling, it feels good to click. Even being an IR transmitter. It's nice.

I was worried it was gonna be too recessed but it's fine for me. And I'm uses to my lock button being on the top since I came from an iPhone. I actually prefer it this way. A lock button on the side of the device always seemed odd to me. Even if it is perfectly positioned so you don't have to move your fingers when locking and unlocking the device . Just looks odd to me.

Feels like they should have put it on the right side of the phone instead of the left don't you think?

I hate the fact that the power button and the charger port are located at same extremes so im always plugging in my charger at the power button.
