[Q] I have 5 lines, all out of contract. What should I do? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Actually, I know what I want to do. I want to get 5 iphone4s' or something and sell them.
The question is, will at&t leave me alone when they find out that I'm not using any of these phones?

Wouldn't bother them. You already extended your contract. You will need to go to the store and get regular SIM as the ones in the phones will be active with the numbers you upgraded. Once you get the new SIMs you'll have to change your data packages back to what they were by changing back the IMEIs you had before the upgrade as well.

the IPhone 4 and 4s take completely different sims than the other phones they are like micro compared to normal sims. I have posted a pic of them. You will definately need to go get a normal sized sim...

Your responses make no sense when you take into account the fact that he already has 5 phones, which means he has 5 sim cards. Why would he need to get different sim cards to swap back? Oh, that's right. He wouldn't.
Are you just throwing out random facts for no reason?
Also, it is your choice to do whatever with the phones. AT&T can't restrict you on who or where the phone can go to.

Thanks for your feedback everyone.
As far as I know/remember, I didn't need to use the sim card they provided; the one I've been using worked.
I guess I'll be posting this on marketplace now

Here are the potential issues.
First you have to get 5 of them. In years past they have put 2 per customer restrictions on them, so you might be making 3 stops, or waiting for shipping. They sell so high because people have a hard time finding one in stock. The price will drop once they are easy to find. Even though they are a disappointing upgrade, they still have an apple on back, so they will sell lots and fast.
Next the SIMs, the pictures don't show a door on the 4S. With the sprint and vz phones being international the SIM might not come out, all phones may have one permanently. Your old 5 SIMs will immediately stop working. You will need to contact att to get them working again. With how busy the stores will be, this may be a very long phone call, during which time all your old phones wont work.
Next features. The data plans for iPhones won't work with any other phones. This will be part of your long call, switching 5 data plans back to the old style. Also the visual voicemail on the iPhone will deactivate the normal voicemail, and will have to be switched back and setup again. Also if you have a data+text combined data plan I have heard you lose that, and can't get it back. But the family plans have a different setup, and that may not apply. If you buy them online you may lose the unlimited data, if you have it, which you cab get back, but it requires some escalation at att to put it back.
So, if you can get 5 iPhones you'll make a quick Buck, but it is going to be a headache and takes hours of your time.

+1 ^^^^
And if you don't have data plan on one of your lines, you could be stuck with minimal $15/per line/per month * 24 months = $360 extra charges per line. If you bought from AT&T store, you may be able to drop the data afterwards. But if you purchased through 3rd party, you may be charged extra$$ if you change your plan within certain periods.

You need new Sims because there is a size difference. I support these on a daily basis. That's why I posted the pic of the 2 different sims.
I'm sure at&t will swap your sim out without too much pain

There you go, buy the a adapters, or just call att and have then reassign the SIM cards you already have. Somehow this solution seems harder than the free lengthy phone call.

Very interesting. I guess I should try one line and see what happens.
Or maybe I should get an att gs2 and sell it for less profit (and headache)

Or ... better yet, keep the SGS II, they are Amazing!! You will have a hard time letting it go once you play with it.
But, yes the SGS II uses the same data and set up as any android smartphone, so it should cause less changes to your account.

I've talked at length about this with people I know at att stores. The only stipulation from their end is that a smart phone continues to get used on each line.
The discount they give on their smart phones is based on making more money per month off you based on the smart phone internet charge. As long as that doesn't change they don't care, at least in a technical sense. They won't like it but they can't and won't stop you.
Money talks.

[Q] SGS2 and AT&T Media Net Plan

If I get the $10 unlimited media net plan on my SG2, all I have to say is that I'm now using a dumb phone (like a RAZR) and that's it?
Will they not catch on eventually like they did with my iPhone? Or if they can't catch on yet, if the SGS2 gets released in the U.S, will AT&T then have the phone in the database, and be able to switch plans?
I'm worried about losing my $30 unlimited smart phone plan right now. Thanks
I have a Galaxy S I9000M and I've been fine for 8 months.
I would assume the same with Galaxy S II but I don't know for sure. Hopefully you can find someone to verify.
A little research would have gave you your answer but here you go.
Att will never see the unlocked(uk) version of the sgs2 or anyother unlocked(overseas) in there database. Ive been running tmobile and overseas phones for 4 years now. Never had an issue and never will. 99.99% people dont even know what this phone is. You will never see change to your att account with any unlocked phone.
Iphone, some nexus 1s and very small % of dell streaks would give you problems with data. Hit the thanks if it helped you out.

No one can get you a definite answer since no one knows what AT&T will do next for sure. But I've been using non-AT&T phone on their media net plan for yrs without issue. If they add GS II to their database, then I will just sell it and move to the next phone.
With the X10a from Rogers, people were fine on AT&T for months. But then AT&T got their own X10 and bumped everyone to the pricey plans.

Yep, It can become a crap shoot when AT&T picks up a device. I made it years before they finally nabbed my on the N1, back to medianet now. While they have been claiming for years that they are going to crack down on unlocked phones they have have put very little effort into it and even then only with phones that they themselves picked up and the N1.
For the risk adverse note that they can add any device to their database as the numbers are in the public domain for all devices. This means they can sweep the network for any device. Not saying that they would, only that they could should they choose.
Realistically they have showed almost zero effort to find and adjust billing on unlocked phones and there is little to lose by switching to medianet since if you do end up getting caught all that happens is they automatically move you to smartphone. The only thing that would give me pause was having a grandfathered uncapped smartphone. Go to medianet and that is gone forever and even if it doesnt matter now it could loom large later. I do not believe I would risk losing that myself, not for this handset but because I might really wish I had it later.
I agree. On four of my lines I have non ATT phones with medianet but I have one with unlimited grandfathered and I want to keep it that way (I'm really hoping it carries over to LTE)

I was wondering if you or anyone else has gone over 3gb of data a month on the media net plan? I talked to a buddy that manages 2 different at&t stores and he told me they definitely know I am using a gs2 when I put the sim card in and if I use over 3gb of data they'll say something but they won't say anything if you stay under 3gb. Does this correlate with your experience?

[Q] Galaxy S2 White on AT&T media net

Is there anyone here using the White Galaxy S2 without any problem on AT&T media net plan? No flag to 2Gb plan?
My 1st one (it was sold.) was seen as blackberry on OLAM. Hope to get some info from here before buying another white one. I know Black one will work but I want a white one. Thanks a lot to all the white one users.
I actually opened a thread about this yesterday, I have a white s2 and it gets flagged as a blackberry. Today att is going to call me and see what could be done, I'm going to stick to my story that I'm using a nokia. I'll update my response after my call with them.

Yes, I received the call from one of their customer service representative. She was asking me questions to try and make sure I wasn't using a blackberry or smartphone. I stuck to my story that I was using a Nokia and explained how three other att smartphones on our family plan have data plans like they should but that if my "Nokia" needed a data plan I would have already put one on. She finally said ok, and said that I would keep the media net plan even though it said I had a blackberry in their system.
If you stick to your story and feed them some crap they'll let you keep it. I'm just glad I get to have unlimited $10 data

I experienced the same problem and its extremely frustrating. I called atnt, they agreed to remove the 2GB data plan and re-add the $10 plan. Its just day one so I have no idea if the changes will be permanent or if it'll just revert to the outrageous 2gb $25 plan again. Will keep you guys posted at the end of the month if i remember.
Blackberry curve.... what a joke
White i9100.... why can't you be hassle free like your black cousin
I'm fairly certain that it will happen again once the next automated imei sweep occurs.
I did a test and it seems that once you stick your sim in, OLAM shows the BB 8300 almost instantly and does not reset to the unknown generic flip phone when I put the sim in my HD2. I have to manually select "Not my phone/device?" in order to reset it. I'm thinking that if the automated sweeps occur on a specified schedule, I can avoid the hassle of having to change plans by using my HD2 during the sweeps.
I'm still waiting to buy another white one...really dunno why the white one is seeing as Blackberry tho....are they going to see all the new unlocked phone as blackberry for the future?...thank you guys for the update, and please keep us in the loop.

Upgrade Hardware Swap penalty . .. ?

My wife (iphone) and I (Nexus) both have unlimited on Verizon. She is eligble for an upgrade. I planned on upgrading her line to the note2 and going home and swapping them around to give me the Note2 and reactiving her iPhone on her account..thus techincally giving me the phone I want while keeping my unlmited...
i have read elsewhere that it needs to be on the upgraded line untouch for 6 months....?
Will this not work. . . . .. ?
Seems odd....can't find any documentation around that. . .

You're reply from other post:
This is wrong info bro. Do exactly what you said, get a new sim, and you can have the phone activated in less than an hr. It may cost you $5, but it'll work. I've heard sometimes VZW won't let you switch an unactivated upgrade to a new line because the sim is attached to the #, so I activated my phone on one of my other lines that I used the upgrade on, got a new sim and was good to go.

Thing that is funny is that I was told and.."oh, they can charge you the full retail price".
you can do it after 24hrs, That's how I got my Note 2, just swapped with the wife.
Only if you buy the phone from somewhere other then a corporate store. You HAVE to keep the keep the phone on the urgraded line for 181 days. So just stay away from best buy, wally world, etc. And it will be fine.

I was actually told that from a non-corporate store (http://cellular-only.com)
I asked if it was a Verizon 'rule' or theirs and he said Verizon...
So, do the secondary retailers have their own user agreements. . .. . ?
Yes. Same rules as online mobile sellers. Look at the terms on wire fly.com

place like wirefly or amazon wireless will have such rule (including walmart / bestbuy etc).
but if you directly buy from verizon, you can swap it even immediately after.
which was what I did for some lines. no penalty and unlimited plan stays.

I did exactly what you want to do.
I used an upgrade on my daughter's line (she has a feature phone) and put the Note 2 on it.
I've done this whole thing before with other phones/numbers on my account and it's never been an issue. The guys said sure, we can use your daughter's upgrade and put the phone on your acct... so he started doing it.
I said wait a minute.. just to verify, you are NOT messing with my data plan right? He said, of course you'll lose unlimited.
UNACCEPTABLE!
He said.. the only way to do it is to put the Note 2 on her line.. and walk out of the store with it.. what you do after that is your business. In other words, they would not switch the SIM for me.
So, I let them activate her line with the Note 2.. left the store and swapped the SIM as I took my 2nd or 3rd step out of the store. lol No 60 mos, or 24 hours.
I was lazy and didn't re-activate my daughter's phone for a day or 2, so she had my Nexus. I then went online and switched her line back to her feature phone.
SO, yeah, it worked just fine. I now have an AMAZING phone and kept my unlimited data!

So whats the significance of this 24 hours then?
Is it possible to wait out the 24 hours and use the same SIM card to swap numbers?
Also, why do you keep discussing buying SIM cards? They're 100% free. You can walk into a store and get one, and a much easier way imho is to get one online. Just do everything yourself.
But please explain to me the above topics as I am doing EXACTLY what you did pretty much. I added 2 lines to my account, both have tiered 2 GB data plans, me and my wife have unlimited on our primary lines, we bought the Note 2's on the new lines and they arrive tomorrow.
My plan is to activate them on my primary lines with unlimited data and place 2 dummy phones on the new lines so I can remove the data plans.
Hows this process going to go then? Can I just activate the Note 2's using the provided SIM's for my primary lines? Or do I HAVE to activate them on the new lines first?

if you only have one sim they aren't able to switch the phone # attached to the sim instantly. it takes some time to be able to do it. the fix for this is go buy an sim card. obviously if you have one attached to your other phone already, do not have to worry about buying a new sim.
pretty much do this, turn them on, let them activate ( i tried to let vzw switch the imei # to my line before activating, and they said the phone HAS to be activated on the other line first ), then went to the store and bought a new sim/switched out the sim cards and i was able to use my phone.

Given New SIM at VZW Store, Get Unlmtd Data Back?

So when I got my phone I was given a new SIM card. After doing some reading it sounds like had I kept my old SIM card I could have kept my unlimited data. Anyway to get that back if I call and argue with them?
No your sim card makes no difference in keeping unlimited data. Its a feature in the billing system that auto removes if you put a 2 year contract on a line when you buy a new phoneand there is no one at the store who can put it back on

Right. But from what I've heard, if you keep your SIM card instead of using the one you get when you order online there's a glitch in the system that never changes from Unlimited to 2GB.
I have absolutely no source for my comment, but I can't imagine they would have kept your old SIM, and I find it even less probable that you will be able to talk to into giving it back to you if you did have it. They are trying aggressively to push us data suckers off unlimited data

Kind of what I figured. I just didn't know if I had an argument since they replaced my SIM without me saying anything.

either way you wouldn't win that argument based on a glitch in verizon's system you were knowingly trying to exploit.

Good Call.
IMO return phone to store, get unlimited back, order online and use your old sim. WIN
Until they realize the glitch and charge you out the ass

Yea if he's within 14 days that's what I would do (on day 9, so far I love this phone, I just hope we can unlock the bootloader and have some decent, current roms)
anyway, I am holding onto my unlimited data like a deathgrip, so I added a new line, with the note (ok, so I am spending $40 more a month in fees) and put my main line SIM into a 4620L hotspot I bought off ebay,. Win win!!
(I travel a lot so this is my main internet while on the go, It always stays with me and my phone, laptop, Vita, tablets and whatever has 4g instead of my phone being dedicated to doing that. Makes my life a lot easier)

ATT G2 SIM Unlock available

Just letting everyone know that currently ATT doesn't have the unlock codes available. However cellunlocker.net have used them whenever ATT fails me as of now has them LG-D800 for the model number.. Just got my code and the first one I was sent worked (Phone said unlock successful and rebooted) Just need to get home to test with my international Sim. Cost was only 7.99
Confirmed working, just popped in an international sim.

I just got my unlocked code for my G2 last night for the heck of it. My question is for me to input this, I have to insert an international sim card in it? Is there a way to just manually enter it without changing sims to test?

I'm pretty sure you just have to put in a non-AT&T Sim. Go to a T-Mobile store and ask to borrow a sim. That's what I do.

Correct. You can enter the code for the heck of it. Your phone will remain locked.

Worked. Thank you. No issues.
Took 11 minutes to receive my code. First try worked. Cost $9.99 on ATT D800.
Thanks much
May look into it

Thanks.
I have an ATT LG G2 w/ Straight Talk (I worked for years in the cellular industry so I figured I could avoid their CS issues 95% of the time). Working great, and no issues, but always looking at options. Had the Verizon unlimited plan, and realized I use data so little lately (most is on WiFi and only transit times are really on true data) that it made no sense to pay a ridiculous sum for what I used my phone for.
Have a T-MO SIM at home, they were like 1 buck shipped so I picked up a Micro and Nano just in case for a fast swap, so I may try their 70/7GB plan out and play a little more data heavy (my work re-reimburses 70 so anything up to there is a wash for me).
Ahhhh the joys of number porting, and GSM phones. Play w/ everything until you find the sweet spot.

This part confused me. You don't use much data but are going for a 7gb plan?
At any rate, how is Straight-Talk? I believe they recently started offering ATT network. I have used the tmo prepaid plan and that worked nicely.
Thanks
I don't use it normally, but that's just by habit. I may try being a little bit less data conscious w/ it if I try since my out of pocket isn't different between the two plans. I used to be a lot more data heavy, but with WiFi going everywhere I make it a point to drop onto trusted networks because it's easier on my battery (in addition to the obvious data savings). I was using under 2GB max monthly with my VZN Unlimited plan so it made no sense to pay over 2x what I am now with ST for it and I changed.
It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems. Their CS I've heard nightmares about, but I haven't had an issue. Their site freaked out and error'd during my PORT REQUEST and it billed my card 2x, and didn't port. I hit up their online person and they gave me a case and # to call. Called and within 30mins they had my port in process, 1 charge applied to it, and the other crediting back. So that particular instance was fine.
My only gripe is if you're an LTE speed purist as they appear to use a proxy that varies. I did a WHAT IS MY IP a minute ago and it was a service in FL (I'm in AZ) and another time I think it showed somewhere in CA. So they're using a proxy service which is going to cut your speeds depending on the hops back / forth / destination. Overall, though, for 45 bucks a month I have no complaints.
"It's solid. I went to it only because they switched on ATT LTE and have no problems."
This is what interested me, precisely. I am not worried about speed. Honestly, if I get more than 4 or 5 mbit, I am prefectly happy, since I don't do much on the phone that really requires high speeds...like torrenting
with TMO 4g, I was getting up to 12mbit. With att lte and my particular home location, I am lucky to see 12mbit (although in areas near me I have seen 52mbit). But, TMO has a few dead spots in my area that att doesn't. At some point I will probably eat the ETF and go to a prepaid.
Thanks for the info.

NP. I simply activated, threw on CleanROM, tossed in the new APN settings and I was good to go. LTE and MMS worked right away. You do need the new SIM card I'm hearing so it flags LTE ability in the system, but I was a new customer anyhow so that's what they sent (and had free shipping when I ordered it).
That's really all that matters... your personal experience. I dig Prepaid because I bought all my phones anyways (I really hate contracts because I'm technology finicky) so it seemed like a better option to change to a GSM carrier since I was being sent a phone for our game anyways and I just had to choose the phone / carrier. Now I can service bounce if I want, and not pay ridiculous VZN prices. Switching my wife to her own VZN plan (we've had it so long they had a single line 60 dollar plan for unlimited/unlimited/2GB) and giving her my iPhone 5 and then changing to ST we save like 50 a month. Even if I bump my plan we still save (not counting my work paying for 70 anyways). It was a no brainer.
Haven't had an Android phone for an extended period since the OG Droid on Verizon and I'm loving the LG G2 and where Android is now.

Yeah, I kept my previously used tmo sim just for unlocking. It expired and I would have to get a new one. As to buying on contract, doing the math, I can wait a couple months, cancel the contract, pay the etf and should be cheaper than buying it outright for almost $700. I have to be as cheap as possible these days
is this also work in india if phone is bought from usa?

Can confirm working. Plopped in my MetroPCS SIM and it's working like a charm. Cheapest SIM unlock I've ever found, short of doing it yourself (I'm looking at you T-mo GS3)
