[Q] Anyone else's phone running hot? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?

Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!

yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem

I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

I only notice my battery gets hot when im charging while playing a game or sometimes watching a movie

Somehow 'Words with Friends' caused my phone to really warm up a lot. More so than I've seen with any other situation and on numerous occasions. Luckily I suck at that game and uninstalled it...

Mine is cool unless i put a thick case then itll burn up

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.

I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?

Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.

The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.

My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.

Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.

Running Hot?

My SG2 seems to run quite hot when doing pretty much anything that requires the screen to stay on, particularly the upper half of the device. I notice the screen itself is quite warm too but according to SetCPU the CPU doesn't go above 38-40 degrees.
Also, it might be my imagination but it doesn't seem to cool down until I do a reboot, suggesting it might be a running service.
Anyone else having a similar issue?
So no one has an issue with their device running hot?

Mine gets hot when i am gaming, or when its sat navving, but it cools down again once i stop doing whatever it was that was making it hot, but it does retain heat thus taking a while to cool.
The screen tends to get hot for me when i am using games/bright stuff, reading my book on there, black screen white text, it doesnt even get any warmer than it would from my hands.
The top gets warmer cos thats where the chips etc are (watch a teardown video, you will see the chips).
I've just noticed it getting quite a bit hotter than I would expect behind the camera (Not seen the breakdown, but I'm guessing thats where the CPU is) when I was playing a few games on it (Specifically Words with Friends and Angry Birds). Just wondering if this is normal in most peoples experience or if its going to burn the side of my leg off at some point?
It should be ok, i've gotten it to the point where touching the camera bit for extended periods of time would be very, very uncomfortable (think a hot, HOT bath) but that's only if you're doing something intensive, usually games.
Right, just been playing Gun Bros with it plugged into the charger, and not only did the battery drop while charging, but it was running at 50c and behind the camera is as hot as Sticks02 points out. Bit worrying really.
Mine still getting quite hot, and quite quickly when playing games. I notice the screen near the top is getting hot too, as well as the back near the camera. Anyone else's screen doing this?

I posted something similar on the modaco website lastweek.
1. Phone gets hot (top half only)
2. Then low battery warning message
3. finally complete shutdown of the phone
Now the phone tends switch of randomly and it's not even hot. I have the latest firmware installed.
Also I thought I'd mention that I did get the battery hot message once then the phone again shut down.
I think this is a software issue rather then hardware, time will tell.
Never had the phone switch off or the battery run down fast. Just the heat for me.

Hot battery

hi, I am running cm7 with stock kernel. Just recently my phone has been getting really hot. I checked the temp and its almost 110 degrees. I haven't installed anything recently either.
I can leave the phone sitting there not using it and it'll still be high. Should I install another kernel or do I need to change settings on my phone? I am using extended battery too.
Thanks.

Hmm any case on it? When its charging leave it face down too.
I have no case on it. Will searching for a signal cause the battery to get hot? My cell standby is at 54% and it says time without signal 67%

Mine got real hot after loading the latest CM7, while trying to sync all on 4G. It was smoking hot in my pocket, so I pulled it out, and took the Trident Aegis case off to help it cool down. I looked and noticed it was stuck at 3G but still trying to sync all.
I had to do the time consuming routine to get 4G every time I turn on the data, and my GPS was still not working, so the hot battery sealed the deal... back to BAMF 1.8 till the next CM7 release is ready to test.
I ran into this one time and found that turning off Wifi seemed to do the trick. It seemed as though constant searching for an available Wifi network caused my battery to get hot. This makes sense if you read how tethering causes some phones to get hot as well.
Thanks I guess the searching for a single is the culprit bc it doesn't get hot while charging.

I'm experiencing the same thing and the exact cause is a mystery to me. The battery definitely gets hotter than it did with BAMF stripped 2.1, yet I get much better battery life than I ever did with sense. This completely defies logic since the two things that will make a li-poly battery warm are a high C draw or charge, but a high C draw should correlate to poor battery life yet it doesn't. I'm starting to wonder if something other than the battery is causing the heat...

One other thing to add, my battery level went from full to low in less than 2.5 hours when this happened. While I believe it was the battery that got hot, in reality I am not 100% sure. I do know that after turning Wifi off and charging the battery, the problem did not return. I am now very careful to toggle Wifi Off/On as my needs dictate. I do this even though I have set Wifi to turn off after 15 minutes from the advanced Wifi menu option. The Wifi 15 minute timeout was in effect when my phone got hot, so I am fairly certain it did not work as it should have. Hope this helps...

Does your rooted NT battery heat up?

The bottom right side of my NT heats up during normal use. Also the battery seems to discharge really fast? Is this normal or am I being paranoid. My previous NT overheated really bad once so I excahnged it.
I have been using it for about 30 minutes now after a full charge and its at 90% charge left.

yes,I got the some problem
I can feel it obviously
Is it possible you have a run away app that's eating up CPU cycles? Check your battery history and see if something sticks out.

I have noticed the battery getting warm, but it's usually when I've been browsing for a while. It doesn't feel super hot (like my laptop does) but it's warm. I haven't noticed terrible battery life. If I let it sit idle, it goes to about 50% in 8 hours time. If this is an issue, I want to know about it. I'll have to restore it to factory settings and whatnot, but I don't want a faulty device.

No its normal and is because deep sleep doesn't work, hopefully once CM9 gets released deep sleep be fixed.

There were a number of posts from people who were seeing high battery temps after skipping the OOBE. Did those of you having problems in this thread skip OOBE, uninstall B&N apps yourself, and/or use compromise the B&N applications/services in any way?
Just got mine. I noticed that it does get warm but not too warm to cause panic. Mobile phones start getting warm too if you've been browsing over wifi for a while. Are most people running frosty nooks? Should it not feel even a little warm?
Or maybe you can rate the amount of heat, say from 1-10 how hot does yours get?
My rooted nook gets hot while playing Exitium for half an hour, but not when it's idling.
Not I
I use my Nook tablet quite extensively and I don't seem to feel an unusual amount of heat coming from it. 30 minutes of use and down to 90% is not unusual either. Otherwise, I would have to agree that there is probably an app running your CPU full tilt. Probably not your battery that is heating up either, if you look at the pictures of these pulled apart, you would see that if the battery was what was getting warm, it would be almost the whole back of your NT.

I was actually thinking the same thing. I think the warmth I'm feeling is actually coming from the wifi adapter inside, which would make sense because I notice it when I'm browsing the web for a long time or downloading a large file.
No issues with heating up here.

Only time mine heats up is if I have been streaming from my pc to the tablet via dlna server to watch videos which would either mean its the wifi chip or the cpu heating up.

Just to clarify, you're saying if it is sitting idle - not being used, and the screen is off - for eight hours, it will drop 50% of the battery? I just picked mine up, and after almost 11 hours sitting idle it only lost 5% of the battery. It sounds like you might have an app causing a wakelock.
No heat in mine and it does retain charge while sitting with screen off. I rarely turn it off and charge every day or two depending on use. I read somewhere it is not good to let the battery go completely dead.
Not sure what OOBE is but I have been turning it off to avoid it from overheating really bad like my first book.
Not really sure how to scale it but I would guess maybe a 5 if a 10 is where it wouldn't turn on and a 1 is its cold to the touch.
I used Indrects method.
How would I check to see if a app is doing something like that? Tgps?
I guess I could just leave it on for a day then check to see how the battary is after like 15 - 20 hours.

I skipped OOBE, I used NARS to root. I don't have this problem.
Never heated up for me, not once.
Overall I'm more than pleased with battery life. Watched 40 mins of youtube 720p video with jetvd yesterday (over wifi) and battery went down only by 10%. My SGS2 would've lost like 60%.

[Q] Do you experience heating issue on your S3?

I've been using my i9300 S3 for a few days now and it seems to heat up on the lower back when using wifi/data extensively. It's not hot to cook an egg sort of thing, but it seems hotter than usual.
Any of you experience such issues?
Hello
I am first time android user. Even i noticed this. Please let me know if it's ok.
It feels normal to me though....but I guess extensive usage may increase heat, just like computers and other electronic devices
I noticed the heat issue a lot more when I just got the phone. It still warms up a bit but i would say it is normal.
Though it did get pretty hot on my last flight during take off that I had to turn it off. Didn't want my expensive phone to melt.

It's normal I wouldn't worry about it to much although it will get warmer if it is being charged while using the program.
I am facing a similar issue ! My question is what temperature is safe enough ? I mean I have used few battery info apps. I have got a temperature reading of around 42 - 43 degree Celsius ! Is it normal ?

Do you own a computer of any kind? Not even that, any electronic device... a TV, PC monitor, anything? Use it for a while, and then report back to me any changes in temperature....
Is quite normal as long as your palm doesn't feel uncomfortable with the heat.

S3 overheating
Krico is absolutely right. It happened this morning when I was charging thru a notebook using both devices at the same time. And the heat lingered on even though I unplugged it. So I switched it off and now it is back to normal. Tks.
The phone can get pretty hot using WIFI and 3g extensively or 3d games. This is normal, electrical components heat up after prolonged use, your computer heats up your tv heats up. As long as the phone isn't burning your hand or exceeding 60C you should be fine. My phone gets warm to the touch and noticeably heats up but doesn't get HOT, if your phone ever gets HOT, turn it off to avoid damage.
I use an app called temp cpu v2. It displays a few interesting stuff incl. battery temperature. There are probably other apps like this.
With wifi on I get around 26 degrees but it sometimes goes up to 50 (or a little more?) on 3d games using wifi.
While charging it gets a little hotter.

[Q] Phone very hot after charging/ use

I got and activated my DNA yesterday. Phone got very hot after charging (from the wall outlet ). I activated the phone and played with it a little and left it alone. Now it seems cooler.
Anyone else experience heat issues with the phone ? I am trying to determine if I got a defective piece or if it is a characteristic of this phone. I had a htc phone before which did Not have this problem.
Also, is the phone's temp displayed under some setting options ?
Thanks,
cornfool
Same with me. It gets much hotter during wireless charging though.
Sent from my Droid DNA. 1080p never looked so sweet
I noticed this as well, it gets very warm when charging (even more so with wireless charging), and it gets warm with even light use.
the HTC DROID DNA when activated and signed into Google email it will be a lot of data to get itself restored. I'm sure you guys at it Facebook or Google Plus that right there with Poul a lot of data to pull in contacts and contact information plus have settings. I got mine yesterday any got extremely high alarming hi but over tonight is cool down it's not fully no more data which is somewhere around 3 gigabytes last night this seems to be doing fine now
Check the ratings of the wakk outlet...many HTCs have prob of over heating...go power master shows temperature...

Now that I used the phone whole day today. I still see an issue of phone heating up quite a bit when being used for longer than say 15 to 20 mins. Even playing the amira game that is included for about 10 mins causes the phone to heat up quite a bit.
I am thinking I have a defective piece
Mini review:
Overall very responsive and fast. Battery life was not too bad, my usage scenario seemed to hold up fine. Not as good as iphone ofcourse but I can live with this.
gps was fine, chrome is smooth. Problem areas for me so far are
1. Heating up of the phone'
2. low light pictures show a lot of noise compared to gs3 and iphone 5
Thanks

you should install a battery widget that shows temp to be sure. My rezound still gets up to 115 or so on 4g, but doesn't effect the performance of the phone.

Mine does the same thing, but it's more like after 5 minutes of constant use it starts to get very warm.
