[Q] Who's gonna port ICS to SG2?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The release date is coming...
Samsung won't update our device to latest...of course
so, who's gonna port ICS AOSP build to our SGS2??

CyanogenMod (teamhacksung)

Ill wait for samsung version of ICS. Need samsung media codecs.

SGS II will recieve official ICS.
Samsung will give official updates do SGSII up to 18 months from the phone release date.
So yes, we get the official samsung ICS

Samsung are signed up to the Google update path .
All compatible products receive updates for at least 18 months from first build date .
jje

really?
dunno that...
but i think it's gonna be a big time to wait...until Sammy releases to SGS2

Maybe it will take a while for the US versions of the SGS2 to get updates (blame the networks for that), but the Euro version should get it reasonably soon.

CM9 for those who don't want to wait for an official Samsung TW rom, just be patient though teamhacksung will do their magic.

I for one am more excited for the Samsung ics than cyanogenmod. I've used cm6 and 7 across around 5 devices but I think Samsung got it 99% right with the gs2!
Ephumuris

that's nice...
it's almost unbelievable, when a new OS is released...
then ppl port it fastest to Nexus, and Nexus S devices...
i hope Cyanogen could really make a SGS2 version fastest too!!
and that ICS could fix AOS bug forever!!

I'm currently using CM7 on my GS2. This is the fastest rom ever. Definitely will go to CM9 by the time it's released already.

They'll do it.

SGS2 to get ICS Jan 2012?

Take this with a pinch of salt as it's far from official but:
Gaurav Hasabnis, an industry analyst and contributing editor of Fonearena.com posted on Twitter: “Something gonna come in Jan 2012. #sgs2 users gonna rejoice!”, followed by a second tweet: “Soon Mali400 gonna be in full use.”
The mentioned Mali 400 is the name of the GPU on the Samsung Galaxy S II. Rumors states Ice Cream Sandwich will utilize the the full potential of high-end smartphones better than previous Android OS, which leads us to believe that the ICS will be making its way to the Galaxy S2.

hell yeah .. now this is what i call awesome news
Hurray...I said January last week....
Hope this is true.. SGS2 will rock the smart phone business more!!!

Thank you for the heads up. Hope GS2 will not take a long time to upgrade like the Samsung did for Galaxy S.
seems to match up with this
http://www.lifeofandroid.com/news_detail/ice-cream-sandwich-to-debut-on-android-handsets-in-weeks/
The worldwide release of Android 4.0 will begin in time for Christmas with Google’s Nexus S smartphone meaning the new OS should be broadly available for all compatible handsets by early 2012.

Hope this is true and not a rumors........waiting
They hvn't even released the 2.3.4 update in India.Jan 2012 s too early a date for us i guess .

If they won't release it officially, I'm sure we'll get a custom rom with 4.0 running as soon as the Galaxy Nexus is launched But good news, anyway!
Just think. If it's January 'officially,' then it could be December (or earlier) for us!
That's a great news. Though I think we'll get ICS unofficially before that. Anyone?

Wow this is great news. Now android is a step closer to WP7 and iOS in handling resources. +1 HW acceleration
Even if we are not getting the official update, i am sure xda developers will cook one for us.

Didn't Samsung drop development of 2.3.4 as they started 2.3.5
I still haven't got any official updates from 2.3.3 on a SIM free handset here in the UK.
Samsung UK have also tweeted that there is no time frame for getting ICS on the SGSII (read in to that what you want)
Think custom roms will be the only way forwards on ICS for some time.
Well that announcement is about Official release, NOT unofficial one. 70% users use Official ROM and like them, existing use this and that. Without a Stock ROM there won't be any Custom ROMs? Would there be?
Count me in those 70%.
We'll sure have some custom rom runnig ICS before the official one but I wonder what they'll do about touchwizz...
Looking forward to it

When will Android 4.0.4 releast to galaxy 2s

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Search the forums.
Some AOSP roms are on it already, Samsung will probably take a while.
It should be soon, but from the looks of it.. Samsung kind of messed up ICS for the sgs2. Google some screenshots of it. I'm disappointed at samsung for messing it up.
My guess is that we will see an update to 4.0.4 from 4.0.3 in about late may - june time, but we will hopeful see some 4.0.4 leaks soon. Hope this helps you
how did samsung mess up? i'm not really up to date on ICS updates from samsung, so please do fill in...

Are we gettin' Jelly Bean?????

99.99% certain that we don't get it officially, but there is a high possibility that cm10 will find the way to our tab!
but as kilometers4 said we should wait for ics first.
If this is what all the posts in the forum are going to be about once we have ICS, please kill me now...

Agreed.... Just shoot me now......
The rumour is that we get ICS in August 2012 or 15 months after official Google announcement. So if there is a chance to get JB, add another 15 months to the official Google announcement (is gonna happen in few days) and you have the Samsung release date of September 2013.
jb uses same drivers as ics... It's still android 4 it's like froyo and gb... so for sure cyanogenmod and aokp + kangers will release jb for us and samsung can go to h....

Afaik the driver model has not changed from Android 1.0 to 4.0, it's still all linux. 5 years old linux drivers work on new systems.

I am --- on my Nexus 7. Sold my Nook Color and my Galaxy Tab Plus is on Craigslist as I type. Not sure what to do with the GT10.1, though... I still love this tab (and unless the difference between ICS and JB is as big as between HC and ICS, I give two ****s if Samsung gives us the 4.1 update...).

Not true.. Or we could have a working camera in ics using hc drivers / kernel

This is because Samsung refuses to release the source code for the camera driver, so you cannot compile it with an alternate kernel. The driver would work for ICS if we had the source code.
Jb has been ripped already according to reports, so we shall see
Are you f'ing kidding me? I knew as soon as I saw the Google io release about jelly bean everyone would start asking this question.
A) how bout waiting for ICS first, then worry about an official update from 4 to 4.1.
B) According to Google it won't be much different, you can do all that 4.1 does with a launcher or a ROM
C). 4.1 will be an easier transition to accomplish whereas 3.5 to 4.0 is a harder undertaking thus the long wait.
D). With the injunction placed on the 10.1 in CA there will be no more galaxy tabs 10.1 for sale in the US anyway assuming Samsung doesn't win an appeal.
E). Its time to upgrade to a new tablet soon, ASUS has some amazing stuff and they are QUAD CORE! Compared to our two.
F). Once we get our cameras working on official ICS who cares anymore??? We will never get 5.0 officially so for me my tab ends at official ICS . CM9 is good now..cm10, cm 11 will suit your needs just the same.....
I am very sure we are gonna get jelly bean on our tab since the drivers for jelly bean and ice cream sandwich are the same, so Samsung only has to do very small things to get jelly bean to our tab. The reason why its taking so long for ice cream sandwich to come to our galaxy tab is that ics is a major revision and lots of drivers need to be updated.

The drivers are the same for Gingerbread, Honeycomb and ICS. There is no new driver model. These are all Linux drivers and the driver model does not change. Since Samsung has not released the Source Code for the Camera driver, and this Camera is not used for any other Tablet there is no Cyanogen camera support for the 10.1 tab.
The only reason there is no official ICS for Galaxy Tab 1 is the presence of Galaxy Tab 2 (with almost identical hardware, but a different camera), which has ICS. Samsung hopes to make some more money on users who don't want to wait and ditch the Tab 1 for the Tab 2.
Sammy will indeed update the tab to jelly bean in the year 2016, stand-by for further announcements. :highfive:
Guys this is Samsung's first flagship tablet....so Sammy 'll lose its already bad update release status completely if it lets down our tab.
With nexus tab given to azus Sammy 's got one less tablet to code for.
" THEN WHY THE F'kin HELL DOES SAMSUNG HOLD BACK UPDATES?????"
Damn frustated man.....

I believe once the JB is officially released the migration from AOKP/CM9 to it would be very smooth except for camera driver which has it's well known issue..
ICS
:good: What I heard lately Samsung announced Galaxy Tab 10.1 ICS upgrade and it's scheduled for July and August '12...

[Q] Any word on Stock 4.2.1 at this point?

I have not heard anything about it. Is there any word on such an update? Do you think we'll actually see one to take us to 4.2.1 officially?

I was reading something that in february we will get the 4.2 version.
I'm sure since the Note 2 shipped with JB and the GS3(even US variants) got updated I'm sure we'll see an update to 4.2 eventually. I wouldn't say anytime soon though because they just released the update to JB for the GS3 not too long ago. I know on my AT&T GS3 I have a fully functioning build of 4.2.1 with everything working for the most part, just not all the features of AOKP are integrated. Task650 in the AT&T and Samsung Galaxy S series is an amazing developer and I've been running his version of AOKP on my GS2 i777 and GS3-i747 since I've had the phone. Even though AOKP is offically supported for the AT&T gs3 by bajja or whatever his name is(sorry I know you deserve more respect than whatever his name is but I don't have time to look it up lol...so I appologize) Tasks build is the most popular and even includes some extras like the LG Optimus G lockscreen which is awesome. I wish he would build of a version of AOKP for the AT&T Gnote 2 lol.

It is still too soon to discuss about that
But rumours say 4.2 will be available in Q3 next year...
I believe that we will get an official update to 4.2
But this could also be our last official update.......

Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
They should already release it but there are some problems with TouchWiz... I'm thinking we just have to wait about one month more.
Some say sat. Sammobile has said a flagship is getting it in 48hrs S3 leak is already out so mite be s2:thumbup:
So we must wait. I believe that it will be soon.
