n00b Question About Which ROM to Use - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At least I admit to being completely green here. Please be gentle.
I got my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 today. All I want is a recommendation on which ROM to put on this bad boy, please. I have already rooted it following the instructions found here. Rooting was a piece of cake.
When I look at all of the ROMs available, I am kind of confused as to which ones I can actually use with my model of tablet.
It is a model GT-P7500 which the following:
Android v3.1
Baseband P7500UBKG6
Kernel 2.6.36.3
[email protected] #1
Build number HMJ37.UBKG9 P7500UBKG9
Thank you very much for your suggestions. I am looking very forward to enjoying my tablet.
By the way, I did do some research, but get kind of confused because when I read about the different ROMs available, I am not sure which one can be used on my tablet. I don't want to mess up by attempting to install something that I am not supposed to. I figure it is better to ask for advise than it is to turn my tablet into a door stop.
Thank you all, again!

What tablet do you exactly have (there are variations of that tablet)?

Not to sound like a complete idiot, but what do you want to know, exactly? I posted what I thought would be needed, but am not sure where to find the "variation" info. I posted everything from the "about tablet" screen.
I appreciate you answering my question. Thank you.

It turns out that you have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 GT-P7500 (3G & WiFi). You could check out this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268099 or this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233328 .

Thank you very much. I will check those out.
Edit: I was looking at the ROMs at those two links provided. Unless I am mistaken, they are not for my tablet.
Or, do the ROMS work on any tablet, regardless of the build and baseband I currently have?

I'm not sure what you are asking. If you are asking if I am asking how to use ROMs, then in a sense, yes, I am.
I am not quite sure if I can apply just any ROM I want to. I noticed that when people post ROMs, they post which device they were made on. If my device is different, I am not sure if I can use the ROM or not. That is what I am asking.
When I look at the ROMs that are in the links above, they are not created using the same firmware that I have. I want to ask for advice before doing something stupid.
Thank you.

If a rom is not made for your device, do not ever try to flash it. Unless, of course, you want to turn your device into an expensive paper weight . If you flash a rom not made for your device, it will be bricked.

Thank you. That is what I was trying to find out. But, to clarify... I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1. Can I use any ROM made for a Galaxy Tab 10.1? Or, are there other parameters that also need to match? If so, what parameters?
I really appreciate the help you guys provide. Kudos!

Only if it is your version of the tab. Example - You should not flash a rom made for the Wifi-only model of the tab since you have the 3G+Wifi model.

Great! Thank you. I was under the impression that the ROM had to come from the same firmware version, etc. But, if it is just model specific, that is a huge help.
Thank you, again!!
Another question to help me understand. In one of the links posted above, the ROM instructions say:
Please note that your Base stock Rom should be JPKG6
then:

This is what is confusing to me. If I have a Wi-Fi/3G model (GT-P7500), and it is not based on JPKG6, according to the instructions, I should not use this ROM. But, in the last post you said that as long as the model is the same, it is OK.
Why the instruction to have base stock ROM, then?

New to I9100, couple of questions.

Hi everyone, I bought a galaxy s 2 I9100 from somebody Nd the phone is great. It is already rooted however it doesn't have clockworkmod recovery installed. How do I install it on my phone? And when I do can I install any I9100 rom or does it have to match my kernel version XWKDD? Thanks sorry I'm a noobie to this phone
The easiest way to get it is to flash Chainfire's CF-Root kernel.
But, just a word of advice: don't flash anything until you read and understand the basic procedures for flashing a ROM or kernel, etc., because it's NOT that difficult to understand, but you can mess up your phone by doing dumb things, most of which are already covered here. So, give yourself some time to absorb the basics before jumping in and getting yourself in trouble.

Ah, well, then you should be fine. The basics are the same for all the S2 variants. Just know not to flash any of the G series ROMs (and avoid Re-Partition in Odin) and you are all set.
Like I mentioned, it's not that complicated, as you apparently already know, but almost every time problems arise, it's from following advice from another forum, at least from what I've observed anyway. They'll say something about "I followed this guide...." and include a link to a four year old post in some other forum about the wrong model or something and act stunned when they brick their device because they followed the bad advice.

I'd suggest you start with a stock ROM, such as the latest KK5 and use the CF-Root kernel (as in my signature). You could always venture into custom ROM territory later, after you get a feel for it.
I tend to gravitate toward stock experience myself, and I love JKay's mod which works well with stock ROMs, but there are some terrific custom ROMs here to choose from, if you feel so inclined.

[Q] custom roms for SGS2

hey have any of you guys installed a custom roms on the SGS2 i have the phone rooted and i was contimplating installing a custom rom just wanted you guys information on how safe it is to do so. I was acutally looking for a nice ICS custom rom but apparently i would need one for my kernel(XWKL1). What would happen if i install a custom rom of ICS ment for a different kernel would it brick my phone?
thanks in advance for any information.

probably but you are better off reading and learning before bricking your phone
ICS is yet to be released but we do have a buggy leaked ICS test rom you need to know how to recover before flashing .

Yes it is safe if you know what you're doing and for you that means don't go anywhere near an ICS ROM try a Gingerbread ROM first but before you do that read and read and search and search.
Just practising my speed typing....
wow thanks for such a quick reply so for example if i were to install the Omega rom i would need to get one for my kernel version only right? Then if would need to revert all i need to do is flash my old insecure kernel back and i would be back.
edit: - i didnt see B3311 post. ok i am a lil confused now if i were to install a custom rom ment for a differnt kernel would it work or would i brick my phone?
Kernel version doesen't matter.

And the key to all the reading is that you are less likely to brick your phone more likely to be able to recover from problems.

True but even with all the reading at least you will feel more comfortable about going about and rooting the phone and flashing a rom. That way at least you do not have to expect others to spoonfeed the information to you. Also when you flash a rom for the first time you will feel great about yourself cause you did it all by yourself than asking others to help you. Hope that makes sense.. and to what you said also you have a great point and i always read your posts when you help people JJe as you are one helpful guy.
Hey, I just contacted Google and advised them to remove the Google search widget that comes standard on every android phone's home screen.
It useless I told them, nobody seems to even notice or use it. Heck, why search when you can just ask?
Still waiting for there reply.

to be clear i never asked which rom was the best and which one to use. I have been reading up on all the different roms available i have narrowed it down to the ICS and the Omega rom and i know how to flash the roms the instructions there are quite clear my only query was about the kernel version for which i could not find a solution. Now i have another question since you guys are saying the kernel version does not matter then why are they country specific and suppose i use a kernel ment for USA would that mean when ics finally got released here for the sgs2 i would need to reflash my phone with the gingerbread 2.3.6 version before i could get the official ICS update from kies?

let me make this clear. Different variants of the s2 hence why you see different forums. If you have an international version then you are safe to flash whatever you want in this forum here. So if you see USA version I would steer clear it as it has nothing to do with the international version if that makes sense. Regarding your other question well yes flash BBL to stock official ROM and that is it

The kernal is not related to country or carrier. The csc is.
Practically all custom roms come with working kernals and modems for the rom.
As for getting the official upgrade, you can reflash your original firmware, but most here just download the new official firmwares from the Intratech thread or sites like sammobile and flash it with Odin. No need for kies. I don't use it at all except for when I first got the S1 in 2010.

Samsung Galaxy SII (M250K) - Turn it European..?

Hello,
First of all, thank you for the time you'll spend helping me figure this out.
I have an Samsung Galaxy S2, korean version, which only have English and Korean languages, besides all the specific things that come with it's particular ROM. It has version 4.0.4 at the moment.
What I'd like to know if it is possible for me to 'turn' it into an European version, installing a ROM 'designed' for that same model. If so, I'd appreciate if someone could guide me (or just point the right direction..) in how to do it, since I'm kinda new at the Android world. More of a iOS user until now
Any information needed about the phone, please let me know.
Thank you.
Best Regards,
Júlio

Welcome to the android world,
Have a look here, here and here. These might be useful to you.
Also use the Search option effectively. That is one powerful tool in XDA
Before you flash anything be sure of what you are doing. Good luck :good:
You may not believe it, but I've already red one or two (not sure now) of that topics, besides another good amount of pages all over the web. Anyway, I'll take a(nother) good look again at the links you posted, and let you know something when done.

Hey,
I'm having some troubles regarding the wifi signal on my GS2. Does anyone know if this is normal?
At work, I'm only two meters away from the router, and I NEVER get full signal. Instead, while working on wifi (like adding an e-mail account), it keeps losing signal and failing.

Which info should I look for to find the software? Baseband or Kernel or Build number? And how do I know am I using ICS or GINGERBREAD? What should I look out for or any important things that I have to take note?

Hum..let's say that while you are in 4.0.4 you are in danger (If you wanna modify your device, software related).
If you wanna play it safe, you got 2 options:
1) downgrade from 4.0.4 to 4.0.3
2) flash a safe kernel (like siyah).
Just start digging about all these, read some threads, some guides, watch some youtube videos of flashing and rooting.
After that, if you still want to root/flash your device, you'll find many guides & tutorials in the general forum. Just like this.
Modifying your device is not hard, you just have to know what you are doing and learn the what-not-to-do tips.

Gingerbread is just the previous version on ICS. Some consider it better, other consider it old. You just have to remain far from brick bug. Download gotbrickbug app from play store if you want a good old scare
Don't worry about the builds, just make sure that you flash an I9100 ROM.
Still, you're up for some reading first.

Hi guys! I'm a noob, and I have some questions

Hi guys!
First of all, I'm sorry if my english sounds wierd, not my main language.
I'm not here to ask witch rom or kernel are the best, just some help.
Recently I got an S2 - GT-I9100 with stock 4.1.2 room. I'm loving this phone, and I kinda like the samsung's rom even tough it consumes a lot of battery. I'm kinda curious about CyanogenMod and using moded kernels, but, I'm kinda afraid of messing up everything and brick my phone. Checked if I had the eemc firmware insane chip and I got it, so it makes me even more insecure of trying out new stuff.
Now for the questions:
I have this phone locked to a carrier, can I still flash it?
Can I flash it even if I have the eemc bug without any problems?
Can you guys recomend a really good newbie guide with each and every step to flash and install a new kernel? (I've looked around this website and the internet, but, those that I find kinda' dont explain everything in an easy way)
I've instaled clockworkmod on my phone, but it says it dosent suport it. why not?
Can I have a custom kernel with sammy's stock room?
thanks in advance.
1) Yes, you can flash custom firmware if your phone is carrier locked
2) Yes, you can flash your phone despite having a chip susceptible to the EMMC bug, which only affects phones running rooted stock 4.0.4 firmware
3) Do not attempt to flash anything to your phone until those guides make sense. Right now they look like they 'don't explain things in an easy way' because you obviously don't know a lot about Android, and in particular this phone. If you take the time to read/learn, the guides very quickly will become easy to understand & you'll know what you're doing. Flashing without knowing what you're doing leads to busted phones & dented wallets.
4) Without knowing exactly what you flashed, I have no idea. If you want to root your phone, there is a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has all the info you need. It honestly doesn't get any simpler than that thread. If you don't find it easy to understand, as I said above, don't do anything to your phone until you do.
5) Yes, you can run a custom kernel with a stock rom

If you flash Philz kernal for your software build its a safe kernal from the brick bug. If you download the zip file it will not only put the safe kernal on but also root it. Link below

What exactly is the EMMC bug?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If you're running rooted 4.0.4 stock & you do a factory reset, there's a fair chance you'll brick your phone. For the technical version, Google/XDA search is your friend.

Hi once more!
Can I ask you for some more help? I read the post about philz kernel, understood what I have to do and I want to thank you about trying to help me. I'm sorry to bother you once more, since I prefer to be certain.
Got the GT-I9100
I got stock 4.1.2
Baseband is I9100BULS1
Kernel version is 3.0.31-88955 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT KST 2013
Compilation Number is JZO54K.I9100XWLSD
So I guess the one that I need to download and install is:
<< 17.04.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.93.6 with CWM 6.0.3.1 based recovery >>
XWLSD (bootloop fixed)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/4cb3mf...3.6-signed.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/q642zb...4.93.6.tar.md5
Also I got SuperSU already installed, this means I have to unistall it and do this or can I install this kernel anyway?

No worries, Im happy to help.
If you already have superuser just download the "tar" file and flash it with odin as thats just the kernal.
Your build is LSD, download that one. which is philz 5.06.1
Your LSD build is quite old, have a look on samfilmware for your region as im sure you should get atleast LSW. Theres also LSZ and MS1 builds out.
Sorry here is the one you need

Sorry for being such a pain in the ass.
Well tbh, this phone is second hand, and the guy that sold it to me, had a custom rom on it but I asked him to flash it back to stock at the time. it came with stock 2.4 or something, but I updated it trough kies to 4.1.2. I looked around samfilmware and I only saw the build I have right now. I dont think I can update it
So I only need to get odin3, put the cellphone in dm, flash the new tar and thats it?

Hi once more, and thanks for everything! Well, I managed to lose my fear of trying it and managed to flash it using the instructions from philz tread. Everything went all right!
I live in portugal, and my carrier is vodafone, I think that the build I have is the most updated one.
Really, thanks for helping me with this!

Your next step is flashing a custom rom Have a look at the link below. Battery life is amazing on this rom.

But the EMMC bug doesn't affect any S II phones with JB roms does it?
Correct (4.0.4 being ICS). Even if you have a susceptible chip, the firmware has to have the bug which causes the chip to be scrambled/corrupted, which means anything before 4.0.4 or anything after (or anything custom for that matter) poses no problems.

I'm at work right now, so I can only do it after work. So I just need to, follow the instructions on the NEAT ROM post to flash it? They dont say how to backup your things tough but I searched in this forum and found how to do it-. So I only need to use the cwm to back it up. Does it back up EFS folder too?
You have been so far a really helpful dude, thanks mate! Was kinda afraid of posting something here, but turns out there is really nice people around here!
Btw if the mods want I can just PM you for some help instead of posting here.
