Chances of ICS 4.0 update for Amaze? - HTC Amaze 4G

The announcment of ICS 4.0 was just made if anyone isn't aware. What are the thoughts of ICS comming to the Amaze, and if so, how long before its actually implemented? Im curious to see how the "integrated" buttons on the screen are going to work out with phones that have phyisical captivate buttons. Its probibaly going to require a little modding in order to remove the "buttons" from the software and remap to the phisical buttons. Just another road-block to the destination of a fairly quick update! (Pun intended HTC!)

Sounds like an easy software change really.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA App

Hmm.. not so sure about that. The way they show-cased it at the event makes it seem as if the "buttons" are a heavy implimintation. For example when you watch a video the buttons disappear and the screen resizes itself to increase the screen size. And there are only three buttons that seem to change funtionwise, depending on what you are doing.

In other words: You'll know. Someday. We're going to dodge that question as long as possible. We have one of the worst histories of updating software for our devices.
For reference, the Flyer still doesn't have Honeycomb although there was a nearly fully functional leak months ago.

I think HTC is way better then other companies out there when it comes to upgrades, the biggest road block are the service providers in USA

HTC is faster than RIM when it comes to updates

Don't forget that Google requires 18 months of software support from release date of their certified devices.

I'm actually curious how they'll handle it this time around. They totally boned us with the original SGS; now that they've got the lead direct from Google for the next Nexus device maybe they'll actually not be completely useless? I'm not holding my breath though.

I'm pretty sure we'll have it even when its not official. Cyanogenmod or AOSP roms will do the trick, but if you want Sense with it, I don't know...

We will have sense 3.5 ported , CM9 hopefully & AOSP hopefully .
It's looking good ICS well at least the launcher .

I hope it get';s ported soon

In order for me to purchase another device it has to be rooted with s off already accomplished. I love the mt4g way to much right now.
Nah, even if it was rooted. Even though the specs are a little bit better than the Sensation I'd still rather get the Sensation because all of the good devs already jumped to the Sensation.
I'd be surprised if a lot of devs went to the Amaze. Probably going to be a similar situation with the SGS4G when all of the devs were already on the Vibrant, no point in getting the SGS4G.
Good phone though, just wish that's what HTC did with the Sensation. The 1GB of RAM and better camera is nice.
Nope. The specs are all that. I'd need more to make me jump to a new phone.
ill prolly pick it up, but not when it first comes out. i love my phone but id like to have something with a little bigger screen and soft keys
The device just looks so damn good though. I'm thinking about it hard.

Specs isn't the only important thing....The G2X had good HW, but had some hw flaws like bleeding among other things.
Personally, this close to the launch of Ice Cream Sandwich, I'd be inclined to wait until HTC's first ICS phone. Or until CM8 has a stable release for a device of choice
I'm gonna wait for the nexus prime.

Steve still works with CM, it's just a separate project now, it may have less work from cyan himself. However you can't forget that CM has a large amount of devs, Cyan has help from others so I doubt they would actually allow CM brand to die off like this.
Well perhaps working at Sammy will give Steve a chance to make sure ICS reaches other their other phones quickly
Considering that CM just announced it would support 10 new Sony Ericsson devices, I take that as a sign that we won't see CM winding down anytime soon.

Since Steve works with Sammy now I'm thinking that he could be learning new or different tweaks, Sammy should have some sort of ICS access (Sammy should have it by now) depending on his job position; so maybe he can work on CM8 slightly earlier. Personally I'm not to thrilled about ICS, after seeing that NexusS w/ "ICS"....It looked nothing like I thought, I figured Google would step it up to fend off iOS5/WP7.5(Mango). But it doesn't seem like much of a UI overhaul, but I'm sure the usability/features have been significantly changed.
I've been sitting on an upgrade since last month so I'm going to use in on the Amaze, even though I was planning to use it on the Sensation.

[Q] ICS?

I know we don't have any ICS kernel sources yet but do you think we will get ICS before this August?
I thought I read somewhere that we were getting it in the next month or two. I would assume we would have a good working ICS port at the least in the next month or two. Can't speak for the devs here, but I thought that's what we were looking at. As for when ATT will push it out, that could be forever...I hate how long they take, but oh well.

Having used ICS on the captivate, it truly is an update worth switching devices for. However, I'm pretty happy with the I777 so I will just wait. Android updates that were actually really good: Froyo, Honeycomb, and ICS. The rest were just hyped too damn much and gingerbread is the worst of all of them (imho).

For one, it's not just ICS when Jellybean comes out, you're going to get it much quicker than anyone else. And also, it's the purest form of the Android version minus any bloatware each manufacturer puts on the phone, which can be either a pro or a con, but overall, the bloatware has been a con in the past.
IMO, Gingerbread was a very good update, Froyo didn't seem that special when I finally got it for my S7. The biggest improvement was non-broken radio firmware, which had nothing to do with Android version.
Gingerbread had significant power management improvements.

I love and appreciate all the work that the Devs have done for our phone, but if we don't get ICS soon I will be leaving this phone. What the hell is your problem? Name one phone other than the Nexus line that has received ICS officially.
HTC hasn't released any updates yet.
Motorola hasn't released any updates yet.
Sony has only released betas (I applaud them for putting out prereleases)
Asus has only pushed it to one tablet (easier to port HC tablets due to HC being a newer codebase and not having to deal with the RIL) and that was an utter disaster
So far, my experience with ICS is that it's not an improvement over Gingerbread. I haven't been able to see any significant positive improvement - some parts of the UI are a bit shinier, but the gapps user interface is clunker than it was in GB. ICS has some good improvements on tablets, but for phones - not so nice.

First of all I said that I APPRECIATE the devs!!!! And I never said that the roms were official. Almost all HTC and LG phones have ICS roms. I left t-mobile with the htc sensation and believe me that phone runs 300% better now that it is running ICS. And by the way Entropy it is no disrespect to any dev by what I said, I am rocking your Kernel right now (Excellent job). I am pissed at Samsung and them only. Our phone is supposed to be a flagship phone so what the hell is the holdup?
If you can't wait then just go get the G Nexus. These questions have been brought up and beaten to death. Just don't be surprised when Ics finally drops for our device and our Roms are superior than most. GS2 surely has the hardware to run prety much anything smoothly and dev community is strong here

That really sucks.
Seems like the gist of the message is that US carriers have so much individual bloatware to account for (sprint tv, nascar, vcast, etc) that an HTC or Samsung can't just roll out a generic ICS for each device. That's what sucks.
Almost makes me want to wait until november for the next nexus phone but I can't wait that long and Samsung seems to be on top of their game as far as upgrading to ICS before anyone else.
Yes, Samsung is on top of their game and I can also assure you that once Samsung ICS update.drops, so will their kernel source. There won't be any of the waiting 2-4 months BS that HTC is notorious for to release source.

I've just learned to take a deep breath and enjoy what we have, our devs are making some very good highly efficient sense roms. Ics is super cool don't get me wrong, but must of us are stuck on gingerbread for a while. Might as well find a good rom, flash some themes if need be and relax. Very happy with performance and battery life with the 2.17 base sense rom. Its surely good enough to hold me until the end of the year until ics finally drops.

I doubt its just about bloat... HTC sends a build to sprint and they send it back if it has bugs/w.e. And that process is continuous until everything is the way sprint/HTC wants it...
If it was just to add bloat we would have had leaks/ota by now...
(my views/what I heard about it)
I honestly am gonna blame HTC (no support for this phone/constant excuses regarding updates/source)
If they didnt have 50+ devices on the market to deal with (updates and bug fixes) im sure ICS would be here sooner...

Android 5 "jellybean" for HTC flyer

So. What now?
There is few - non-complete - ICS roms for the htc flyer, but nothing good enough for daily use.
We didn't even get android 4 before android 5 was out... :crying:
Drew Garen is apparently working on ICS. Maybe he should be asked to try to work on Jellybean instead?
What do you think? Will it be harder to get Jellybean? Will it ever be done?
I think you should just give it up. What makes you think we ll get 4.1,if like you said we don't even have a good ics Rom. If you realy want buy a nexus 7. It's 199 so the price is very reasonable
I'm pretty confident that Chaos is going to get his ICS build perfected with everything working, I mean, look how far he has gotten so far. I wouldn't count on DG though. Too many broken promises.
As for Jellybean. The source code isn't even released yet. Just the update for the galaxy nexus and the sdk. Sdk ports will never be as good as source builds so forget about that. When the source is released for JB I don't think it will be too hard to get an AOSP build going seeing as we already have a good ICS build. The leap wasn't as big from ICS to JB as it was from GB to ICS. So in theory, we will probably get JB (I can't speak for the other developers) sometime after the source is released.
So just sit back, be patient and keep track of any news
This is getting silly. Really! I think it is best to just cut the loses & buy something new. I think the turn around for new OS'a is shortening. I mean ICS isn't even a year old. I've learnt my lesson.
My next contract will only be 12 months. & I will dump the limping HTC brand for something else. That way I won't be disappointed.

Anyways, thanks for all the replies!
Man everyone is obsessing over jelly bean...why? It's a minor update.. its a miracle chaos got ics running on this device, asking for jelly bean is a new monster. Id rather the focus be on getting ics perfect for the tablet than start over on a new monster. And idk about jelly beans New tablet mode, Id prefer the tablet ui that was introduced with honeycomb.
Thing is google cranks out new android versions quickly. People won't keep this tab forever, including developers. So the best possible experience that takes full advantage of the flyers hardware needs to be the goal not desperately trying to scrape together parts to get another version of android on the tab. Really I'm fine with honeycomb aside from the lag, and ioiwillio is working on that and so far so good

Jelly Bean does not have a landscape home screen, which is weird.
The emphasis on voice and search is getting too much for me too. I feel like Jelly Bean was designed to collect information about you. It is getting too big brotherish.
It sounds great to get a Nexus 7 maybe 16g at least. I don't know if they have sdcard slot, that would awesome. The HTC EVO View still has great potential as a school tool. I take it everywhere take notes, make beats, do homework, watch movies, listen to music, text everyone and email. I hardly carry my phone to school or laptop. I think its still very functional, even the Gingerbread works fine on this device. I can even code. It's definitively not a 12 core that I treasure so much as to not carry it outside my home in sunny Southern California.
I would rather use telepathy but I'm stuck in a Dark Age.
Big Bro indeed. As much as I like Google, their goal of collecting all information is frightening. Information is power - someone with too much power is a tyrant.
I would rather use telepathy but I'm stuck in a Dark Age.

This could be fixed i believe, (Not by me) as i don't really know much about the APK's at all. But i beleive it is possible, the same code from an ICS lockscreen apk would work and also i believe a lot of the ICS APK's would work as this is not a major API level only a slight step up, however i could be incorrect.
Yeah actually the 10 inch layout for jellybean is classic honeycomb style and they've already found out on the nexus tablet its just a matter of rooting and changing the dpi

According to what I have been reading an ICS kernel will work with a jellybean rom so I might start working on that soon

Yes. It seems like I am wrong about it anyway. There IS a landscape mode in the UI.
I am thinking about ordering one. It is a shame because the Flyer has better hardware in some respects (rear camera, SD slot, MHL support). But, Nexus 7 hardware is good enough and, most importantly, it has Google supporting it so we will surely get timely software updates for a while at least. Also, I am sure that there will be a ton of Dev activity becasue this is a Google product and will probably be at least moderately successful.
Hope the community of flyer grow stronger and stronger. Anyway it is not old enough to die, with all this, All the flyer will have a longer life:fingers-crossed:

We need a ICS kernel first, and I was pretty sure the framework changes were rather intensive.
From what I can gather, the changes between HC and ICS and hell compared to the minor update from ICS to JB. If we can get a working ICS build for the Flyer, JB will seem like a piece of cake.
Back to the UI discussion, I'm actually a fan of the layout on the Nexus 7. It's actually more of a traditional phone layout which would work much better on the Flyer if the soft keys were disabled and we could go back to the hardware keys. It would free up the bottom of the screen and give us more usable space.

I'm kinda thinking that too. Ideally what I think would be perfect for the flyer is a launcher with a honeycomb layout that auto rotates to both portrait and landscape and has no dock and the apps and search bar up top just like honeycomb. Then you have the notification bar up top, virtual keys disabled, and hardware keys enabled and bam perfect flyer layout!

Rezound most likely to get JB

http://www.htc.com/www/help/android41faq/ Looks like we're hopefully getting JB after all
then consider our ability to provide updates to products from 2011.

You reading the same thing I am, or are you projecting?
Not necessarily.... we meet the spec requirements, but they said that devices from 2011 would be met with consideration. Not exactly a guarantee. Plus, if we got sense 3.6 in the last update because our phone "couldn't handle" sense 4, why would they then update us to sense 4+? Okay, I'm ending my pessimistic post of the day now.

It would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath

I hope that we do get JB, but considering the Thunderbolt is still waiting for ICS, I can't say that I am too optimistic.
But HTC phones will sometimes get two upgrades. The incredible did.
It's really up to Verizon to let it through, I would think. So it's more of a maybe, but I'm not so optimistic that it will happen. Hopefully the Rezound will get JB, though. I'd love me some stock Sense 4 for a change.
Not to be a pessimist, but I feel that there is pretty much 0 chance we'll get an official jb update. There weren't enough rezounds sold for HTC to care, and vzw makes it even harder on them. They aren't going to go through the effort. All the focus is on s4 devices . I'm crossing my fingers that any msm8660 device gets a JB update from HTC so we can pull from it.

Why would HTC spend the money, time, and resources to create a JB ROM that runs Sense 3.6? They never promised more than ICS for the Rez as a selling point, so they owe us nothing.
They wouldn't give us a Sense 4 update because they have already stated in print that the Rezound doesn't have the hardware to run it. But that's only half true.
Of course, many of us are running some variation of Sense 4 now on our Rezounds. So while it is technically possible, some concessions had to be made. The Rezound can't do continuous camera shooting very well. Also, still image capture while shooting video is not possible. These features were a huge part of what made Sense 4 so great to HTC (conjecture on my part, but an educated guess based on the advertising), so their official stance on Sense 4 on the Rezound does make sense.
HTC releasing a 3.6 Jelly Bean Rom seems highly unlikely.
Hey the tb was updated to 3.6 in the leak from what like 2.1? But anyway we've technically already got 2 updates, 3 if you count the global leak...

He meant 2 android version bumps. The Dinc has had like 1,000 minor updates
I really don't think htc would even consider trying to update the rezound. It would require so much work. lets just hope chad can pull it off!

Yeah I know. Sorry if I came off as hateful or anything. I guess I was just curious as to how anyone who read that statement would interpret it to mean that they were most likely gonna update the Rez to JB.
I got the opposite impression. Guess it's just a glass half-full/empty thing.
If they did upgrade us to a JB (not Justin Bieber) then I'd be beyond excited and looking forward to what awesome surprises our glorious devs here would be able to come up with.

hey i see in your signature thing that youre underclocked and undervolted. does that -150 make a big difference in battery life?
An update to JB would convince me to buy another HTC device instead of going back to Samsung. I miss the OLED screen.
