what happens to a stolen thunderbolt? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a friend had his thunderbolt stolen & already filed a police report & got his replacement so everything is fine with him now. I'm curious about the stolen phone itself though. I know it gets blacklisted on verizon but what about potential recovery? he never had any phone security apps installed and had that "phone finder" option disabled. can't they still track the phone via gps or something? just with all the security these days it makes me wonder how/if these thieves can even get away with it.

Yes. Go to the Google Market on the computer and have him install Lookout Plan B . This will push the app to the phone and will auto install. Then it will email him the location after a few minutes. This will only work if the thief did NOT do a factory reset/wipe, the phone is still on, and connected to the internet.

Are u sure you are not talking about taking your friends thunderbolt and using it till you get a new phone? next time he should just say he lost it people on here have lost phones got a replacment and a lie or not they ended up finding their phone and still use it as a backup. They just put in their new 4G card and use it to test roms and such. Not bad as a 100 buck replacment.
If your buddy really did get he phone stolen, track them down and deball them and video it with the stolen phone.

I thought that there was in fact a "master" blacklist for stolen phones that all carriers access. It's not as applicable with VZW, but consider GSM phones and how "transferable" they are.
That said, I thought that stealing cell phones was completely foolish (not that stealing wasn't already!).

They make a great mp3 player, movie player or WiFi mini pad even if you can never use them as a phone again. They are basically everything an Ipod touch is but bigger screen.

To the typical person who would buy a stolen cell phone, it's just "a phone" though. People who steal stuff typically don't take things for their own use either. I just gave to wonder when a thief goes to their "fence" with stuff if they even take the phones or just take it all and toss the phones in the garbage.

yeah exactly. replacement phone already came awhile ago.
whatever happened to the original is what I was curious about. I mean, if it ended up in someone's hands(with the bad esn) and they tried to re-activate it couldn't verizon track them down?
I had a phone stolen from me long ago & went through the same replacement process.
I remember trying to call my phone & some girl answered. she refused to give it back but offered to sell it to me.
Now that it's happened this time(although this time it went straight to voicemail upon calling)it just got me wondering.

It's simply not worth Verizon's time nor, in most areas, the police's time, to (actively) look for a cellphone.

So i used mine my tethering with the hd2 for 6 months straight and never had a problem. I often called to even check. They told me many times they do not check.
and btw the response after your question just isnt right.
I don't think they can tell if you're sucking all the bandwidth with your phone or a tethered computer, probably why they set a hard limit on the monthly bandwidth.

+1 yes pointless op commentary
TMO can tell when you exceed 5gigs........ that is all they look for. Remember now phones have the ability to download pretty fast so whether they are used for tethering or not is of no matter to TMO just the total download of data per month
5gb cap.
If you read the terms and service it says once you have past the 5gb cap you will get slower dl speeds which is nice of them as all other carriers charge you for the extra data used. That would be the only reason they would check it and I can say this after 5gb has been reached which I have noticed it does show in the dl speed after you reached your cap but hey at least they dont charge you like i said.
there is some sort of fingerprint associated to a desktop site vs a mobile site. if they wanted to be assholes, they probably could tell. but we're on tmobile, not ATT remember?
Mobile browsers can set their user agent to desktop browsers
The myth that other carriers charge you for going over the cap is false. Verizon and Sprint are truly unlimited while AT&T is the only company that will charge for overages. Now when Verizon drops LTE that might change things. Personally I have never gone over 5gb even though tried this last DEC. while on vacation. I only managed to accumulate 2.5gb.
I have known a couple of people recently who were using mobile ap or tethering on rooted devices, tmobile detected it and shut down their net until the next billing cycle. Not sure how tmo knew, but they did and the text these two recieved stated just that, tmo has detected unauthorized data usage/tethering and is shutting off services until so and so. Just a word to the wise.

They won't shut you down if you pay for the service, however if you don't pay for it and are using the service on a rooted device, technically they could cancel your account entirely for breaking their tos. Think about it before you call bs next time.

So, I bought a photon on Craigslist. I'm a firm believer that there are good people in the world as well as bad people. I spoke to the guy on the phone and he was very cordial. When asked, he told me the esn was clean, and that I could call sprint and verify. Upon delivery, his sister told me to call sprint to verify it's clean. I told her it wouldn't be necessary. I figured someone who is out to scam, isn't going to risk losing out on $250. So with that done, I went home. I hopped on checkesn.com and it told me the esn was not cleared. I was in shock, so i decided to sign onto sprint. After some research, I found out that you could figure out if the esn was clear by trying to activate it through the web interface. Same result returned. I called sprint and they told me that the phone was still attached to the account and that I had to ask the owner to release the phone. After I texted the guy, He said it was his mistake, and that he must have given me the wrong photon. He said he would call and have it removed from that account. He texted me back saying that it was cleared. 2 hours later, and it's still not cleared. I don't think that he would go through the rigamaroo of responding to me, if he wasn't planning on resolving this. Now its starting to seem more and more like I'm going to be stuck with a photon for a paperweight... sigh

yeah, knowing myself though, I will find away to get his address from that number... and I can be a very mean and vindictive person. I'm just trying to change...
Maybe it's not his fault and the carrier screwed up. Before jumping to conclusions, I would find out as much info as possible, then if not satisfied, try asking the guy if he'll give you a refund. No need to be "vindictive", that'll only lead to more trouble. Especially if it's not the guys fault. Sounds like he has been trying to help and if he were trying to scam you, he would ignore you. And after all is said and done, if you don't get it resolved then chalk it up as experience. There is some personal responsibility in buying from sites like craigslist and ebay. You stated that the seller told you to call and check the ESN first and you declined. If you would have done so, you wouldn't be in the situation you're in. Seems the blame should not be laid on the seller in the end, but on you for not doing your due diligence.
Sadely, I'm with stonesaber, and trust me, Sprint's computers are not the top of the litter. Take it to the store and see what happens.
It's probably attached to an account with a balance. If it isn't cleared, you have grounds to charge him (obtaining property under false pretense, a felony). Perhaps remind him of this.

No, I met with his sister at a public place. I just called her and she said that she has another phone connected to the account, so this one should not be attached to the account. I read somewhere that you have to wait something like 30 days before you swap esn's ( Don't recall if this applied to vzw or sprint). She said to call sprint and tell them it was a gift, and I wanted to manually activate it. She said if that doesn't work, she would switch out the phone with the one that they originally intended to give me. I just feel like when I try to call her back, her phone will be disconnected as well...
Worst case scenario, I can sell it to someone overseas for them to use with their sim chip... Don't know if anyone would want to pay $250 for it though.

Since it's connected to an account, it'd be easy for you to get that money back via court. Also - Since it can be used on GSM networks, you could configure that and sell it as an unlocked GSM device, recoup some of your losses, if not all.

Now I know... Stay away from Craigslist... I called her back, and she said she would get it squared away in an hour. What I find peculiar is that she called the phone she sold me, and apologized, and said she would get it disconnected, if not, she would meet me to give me another phone. I told her I would call her back at 12. She insists that she will give me another phone, should she not be able to remedy the situation with this one. Fingers still crossed.
I hope it works out for ya. Be calm and let her know that if it's not resolved one way or another legal action will be required.. this kind of crap happens all the time. People are bums.

Thanks for the reply nemanracing, but sure enough, everything has been remedied! One question, which hopefully you can answer. Now that the phone is clear and good to go for activation, is there anyway Sprint will " change their mind" and deactivate the phone? I don't know what this lady did, but it says the esn is clear. Just want to make sure the bill doesnt get tacked onto my account some how.
You definitely won't be held liable for any balance accrued by another individual. If it activates, you should be good to go.

10-day city trial?

Yesterday after I finished a phone call (I was driving) and hung up, I received a screen that was in all white with an ok button at the bottom that said something about a 10-day trial for city.
I didnt have a chance to read this as I hit the ok button thinking that I was going to be hitting the apps icon (I didnt expect this to pop up).
So, what is this? Am I automatically going to be charged after ten days? Do I need to call ATT to cancel this thing?
Thanks in advance...
*sigh* Im getting so pissed off at these ploys to try and get more money out of me. There are alot of free apps that will do this (or one time purchases) and why I would need to pay a service fee for this feature is beyond me.
Its an app that lets you try it for free for 10 days after that it will let you decide if you want to buy it or not
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
If you find it useful (which I sort of do), just clear data every 10 days and you'll have an infinite trial. It doesn't automatically charge you, so there's no risk of keeping it.
The app shows what city an incoming call is coming from. Really only useful for unidentified numbers, but still pretty useless to pay for. If you clear data every ten days, I suppose it would be ok to have, but idk if it's even worth that much hassle.

City ID is not just an app that you pay once. It's a monthly subscription service. If you didn't opt out after trial ended, you will be charged every month.

You'll see the charge on your AT&T bill. Not sure if this would happen to users on T-Mobile or other carriers.
Yes. It happened to me on my prior AT&T Android phone. What a scam!
I called AT&T after I saw the charge last year and they removed it and future charges. But what a hassle...I really can't believe a company like AT&T that tries to be professional allows that type of software.
Seems like the media complains about every other scam...why not this??
oh well.
Just make sure to check your AT&T bill.
This happened to me today..got the pop up but backed out of it. damn. I iked it when i first got the phone. No idea you had to pay!! I did however look in the mkt and i saw one that said no monthly fees......?
Almost all the bloatwae AT&T put on the phone require monthly subscription. A one time purchase doesn't warrant AT&T's trouble to put onto your phone.
All carriers do this.
This is one of the first apps I froze when I rooted my Note..
Lovely, yet another thing I need to look for... *sigh*.
Luckily, most of the bloatware is uninstallable without root so I have uninstalled alot of it. To my knowledge, the only thing left on my phone that costs is ATT Navigation (and this hidden CityID thing) which I was able to use Go Launcher to hide the app.
Hi,
just want to check, if I freeze this app using Titanium Backup within 10 days, I won't get a bill? or I need to call ATT for a cancellation? Thanks.

If you never see a prompt from City ID ask for you to continue using it, you are fine. You don't even need to freeze or uninstall it if you want. Just make sure you said 'NO' to the message box and it will go away.

Will switching to a dumb phone trigger a plan change?

Does anyone know if activating an older dumb phone in place of my FUBAR'd DX2 will cause my plan to change? I've got an old Voyager I could activate since I can't seem to get my DX2 to work properly. I will eventually get another Android device to replace but not for some time since I'm still without work. I at least need a working phone for potential job calls.
I'm pretty sure as long as you don't actually change anything about your plan, you should be straight. Changing your phone won't matter.
If tpu wont be using a smart phone you wont need the extra data package. If you don't have to keep it you can save quite a bit of money

That's the problem as switching to a dumb phone would change my data. Plus what worries me if I can and do change back to a dumb phone without a change and when I get a different smart phone through a 3rd party like Swappa/Ebay/etc. that I would be forced to change. I'm trying to hang on as long as possible to our unlimited data plan. Plus our bill would go up around $25/mo with the new plan. Rip-off!
I'm just going to keep my useless DX2 on the plan for now and pray I don't need to use my phone while away from home. It's going to suck having to pay for a phone that I can't use.
If its gonna be an issue you might be better off keeping the x2 until you upgrade or get a different smart phone.

When I talked to VZW earlier trying to see what they could do with my dying DX2 (nothing, of course) and I did ask them. Instead it turned into a "we can sell you a RAZR" and "switch you over to our new money-saving plan" sales pitch and kept skirting around the question. Typical. I think you're right. I'll just have to fight with this phone until I can get something else.
Verizon doesn't really care about customer needs. Them trying to sell you a phone with their garbage plan is typical. Just hold tight as long as you can. What's wrong with the x2 if you don't mind my asking?

If you went to an actual dumb phone, I don't know if they would let you keep your data package and that would alter your plan. If you get another phone from Ebay or wherever, that won't matter. You are not changing the plan at all. That's the same scenario I just went through with my Gnex. It was my brides time to upgrade. I got her upgraded phone switched to my account and she got my X2 swapped to hers. The plans didn't change and we both kept out plans as they were before.

Does anybody here work at Sprint?

I bought a phone off somebody on Craigslist and the phone is still attached to his account.
And now I can't get a hold of the person I bought it from because I deleted my texts as soon as I got the phone, and he also deleted his Craigslist add.
I have had the phone for 2 days now. It's still connected, meaning he hasn't deactivated the line yet. And because of this, I can't get it activated.
(Which also makes me believe this phone wasn't stolen and sold to me.. because it's still connected and not reported as a BAD ESN.) - Also I have received no calls or texts on this number since I got it (other than me trying it out to see if it's still connected.)
What I need from the Sprint Rep:
If I PM you the phone number of this phone, will you be able to find out the name or other numbers that are connected to this line, so I can call the person and get it removed?
That would violate pretty much everything lol....
Chances are, his account might end up being a write off. Sounds shady, some people activate, get full phone discount, and never pay their bill. Causing account to suspend. If that wasn't the case, he would have taken the device off his line .
Under system settings, About/Phone Identity/Current username. Should show an email associated with the phone. It's a @sprintpcs.com email, but its worth a shot.
Always, always, always call sprint and check the status of the phone you are buying off of Craigslist.
Sorry about your purchase man. Chances are the account is going to get suspended and he/she won't pay the bill and the phone will have a bad ESN linked to the account.. Good luck and I hope Sprint does something for you but I doubt they will.

When you buy a used phone there are some extra steps you need to take to get it activated. The current activation settings need to get wiped out, which do not get wiped when doing a standard factory reset. I helped the person I sold my og evo do this. You need your MSL code in order do this. There's an app on the market called MSL Reader that will get it if you root the phone. You should be able to root it without activating it.
Dial ##72786#
It will prompt you for a password. Enter the MSL Code
Press Menu, and then hit reset.
This will factory reset the phone and reset the network data so it can be activated.
This would be good practice to do this before selling your phone. It will wipe your name and phone number out of the phone, and make it easier for the receiving party to activate.
EDIT: Here's a link explaining it direct from sprint. Go down to the section about programming a used phone.
http://support.sprint.com/support/a...ox=program evo 4g lte&id16=program evo 4g lte
EDIT2: It also looks like you can try the manual program option mentioned in that link. Dial ##123456# replacing 123456 with your MSL Code, then follow the rest of the instructions.
Never hand over the cash until the phone is on your account at the Sprint store. I have seen it where it says it is clear but when it went to activate there was another problem with the phone account.

Well, the OP might just be following the wrong directions for activating a new phone instead of a used phone. He says there have been no calls or texts coming in. I would try making a call to see if it is in fact active.

I really do believe this was an account opened probably with no social just to make a quick few bucks.
I work for Sprint and see this all the time. Expect a deactivated phone with a bad esn in a few days.

This is what I'm afraid of. But I bought the phone literally BRAND NEW for only a $100 cash. So even if he was going to do what you said, wouldn't be end up losing out, as the phone+sign up fees would cost more?

Wasn't thinking when I got it. =[
I would take it to PagePlus and at least be on Verizon's network. =D
Damn, I wish I had my own personal Sprint rep to clear ESN's that have been reported as bad.
