[Q] Secondary Download Mode? Whats the deal? *PIC - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Every once in a while this "download mode" comes up. I had left my phone in my room and it died while i went quickly to the neighbors. When I came back, I found my phone in this download mode. Ive seen it before and I get to it randomly. Any insight?

When you turn on your phone by holding the vol+/- and power with the USB plugged in, this is what shows up. So I'm guessing that's what's happening.. I'm not sure. Wait for an expert on the subject.

heres the thing. My phone was completely untouched and the charger was not plugged in. Its a totally different download mode.

So, I've seen this particular download mode come up when I go into download using the adb reboot download command. The volume up-down method brings up the download mode with the number of flashes and the other warnings. Not sure what the difference is.

Is it a stock ROM or you have any other ROMs and a custom kernel? AFAIK, The only way to enter download mode other than the physical key combination is to let the kernel know before it is rebooting - like 'adb reboot download' and using some custom options found in other ROMS..

Sorry, i have Serendipity 8 and kernel is Entropy. Ive experienced the same on UnNamed as well. Not a big deal. Its just a pain having to pull the battery because its a tad hard to remove it from the case.

I think you don't need to pull the battery out. Keep pressing the power button until the phone switches off. Again press the power button so that the phone boots again..

I tried that with no luck lol

This does work to reboot the phone without pulling the battery. You can also hold the power button until you see the first boot logo.

I have no problem rebooting from download mode by holding the power button. Usually takes about 10-15 seconds to work.

[Q] Cant enter recovery mode or download mode!!!

Dont know if this is the right section but does anyone have any idea on what i can do? my phone cant get into recovery or download mode after flashing a rom. it just remains on the screen that says Vibrant and Samsung... no, it didnt have a lagfix so no voodoo was enabled....help please!! thank ya
Not the right section but...
Battery pull your phone then put it back
Plug in the USB
Hold both volume buttons down
THen press power button (while still holding volume up&down)
The screen should pop up with something (vibrant, phone!computer, etc)
Once that happens, let go of the power button (BUT NOT THE VOLUME!)
should get into download mode
Yea, i tried all of the little button combinations to get to either recovery or download..... nothin happened! im not new to this so i know about how to actually get there but its just not doing it now.....thanks anyway though!

this is the easiest method out there and should be sticked.
it doesnt matter if its connected to a wallcharger or pc, it will work no matter what.
works for me EVERY time.
I had the same issue yesterday after an ODIN flash failed. On the CM forum, I believe, was instructions, linked in the Vibrant Bible.
1. Pull SD and SIM
2. Plug USB to phone
3. Plug USB to PC
4. insert batter and wait for the icon to come up showing that your battery is charging
5. Hold Vol UP and DOWN, press power, hold power ONLY until the screen goes black, then release.
6. Continue to hold Vol Up and Down.
This SHOULD bring you into Download mode so you can connect ODIN again. Worked for me after a few tries. Don't give up, keep trying (Even though you want to either whack your forehead or throw the phone)
Another way I have seen it listed is to do all of the above until the inset battery part, and skip the waiting to see the battery charging icon. Hold the buttons with the USB connected, then insert the battery with the buttons pressed.
Hope that helps you out, as I know how frustrating it can be to have a soft brick on your hands.

hold power button or pull battery
im not willing to try it again at the moment to double check, but,
from my experince in the past it came back up in dl mode still if i did that.
could be that those times were when i had failed odins and stuff...
thanks
maybe lol
but if you go in normally like if you meant to go to recovery from extended power menu but pressed download mode by accident
just hold power for like 5 sec and it'll turn off or just pull the battery
I've had to do that a couple times. Just pull the battery. Haven't seen any ill-effects from it.
just whip that bad boy out and stick it back in!..... the battery you pervs.....
Lol seriously your not going to harm it by pulling the battery..... if the usb plug is still in it will stay lit up though

I've already asked this question somewhere. Most popular reply was keep cable plugged in, pull battery, disconnect cable, reboot
Edit: disconnect cable, insert battery, reboot. But you were probably smart enough to full in the blank

[RESOLVED] Hot Restart, now phone won't turn on! HELP!

The market was acting a little flaky on my Evo3D, so I thought I'd reboot the phone. I recently flashed ViperROM RC 1.3, so now I get the option to "Hot Restart". Sure, why not I thought. So I choose the "Hot Restart" option. And my phone never came back on.
Tried every combination I could think of, pulled the battery, held the power button down for a minute, held volume down and the power button.. Nothing happens. No flickering of the screen, no lights, nothing.
If I plug it into AC, the charge light comes on red, stays red for a few seconds, turns green, then turns off. The battery was fully charged when I tried to reboot it.
If I plug it into a PC, and issue an "adb devices", I get the following:
D:\Downloads>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT16CHX00895 recovery
Recovery?!?
I can adb shell into the phone, and it looks like I have root (I get a "/ #" prompt).
I can push/pull from the phone.
I tried all combinations of adb reboot (with and without bootloader or recovery), and while it does reboot the phone (and the screen DOES flicker at this point), it just goes dark and again and appears to shut down (but adb devices still shows it as in recovery mode).
After about a minute, the phone appears to go to full sleep mode, and adb disconnects.
I've searched google and xda-developers, and can't find ANYTHING about this.
Anyone have ANY ideas???
Getting desperate here folks!
Scott
This happened to me as well. I dont really remember how I got phone to turn on but I did. Try pulling battery for longer duration. I do know that I pulled the battery. I will try and think more of what I did when it happened to me. So you cant get into the bootloader or recovery?

adb reboot usually works for me when i get stuck during hot restart... pull the battery and wait 10-15 seconds then press the power button for like 3 seconds, put the battery back in and see if that helps

Thanks for your assistance.
I pulled the battery, let it sit for about 2 minutes, held the power button down for 15 seconds, put the batter back in, hit the power button again for 5 seconds. Nothing.

Sometimes you'll need to hold the power button down for more than ten seconds, with the battery in of course.

No, I can't get anything anything on the phone. Absolutely nothing happens when I hit the power button, no led's blink, the screen doesn't flicker, nothing.
ADB does appear to work. ADB REBOOT does make the phone reboot, and it does make the screen flicker, but then it just goes dead again.
Thanks for your help!

Try what the other poster said. When I read it I kind of remember holding the power button in for a little once I replaced the battery after the pull. I recall holding the power button for more than 5 sec, letting go then hit power again and it finally came on. If that doesnt work maybe you can pm the dev from viperrom and ask for help.

There was a thing where some people needed to pull their sdcard for some reason.... Once powered up without it you could shut down and restart and put it back and we're all good.... I needed to once, though the charge light never came on for me... Worth a shot

I have never used ADB before but could you push a PG86100 update zip if there was one on your sd card or does that have to be done through the bootloader?

Progress! Removing the sd card makes the
adb reboot bootloader
command work, so I can get into the bootloader now... but , if I select reboot, it goes back to doing the same thing.... and I select bootloader, and then recovery, it does the same thing.
Trying a bunch of other stuff, nothing's panning out yet.
Any ideas now that I can get into bootloader?
Thanks!

can you read anything on your sd card when you plug in the usb? I would guess not if you cant see the screen to choose storage instead of charge only. Sounds like somehow flashing a stock update.zip would get you going again, I just wouldnt know how to do it. Can you put your sd card in an adapter for pc to get the PG86100 image on it then place it back into your phone and run it from bootloader?

do a battery pull and hold down the power for 10 seconds with the battery out, put the battery back in and hold volume up and press and hold power until it turns on
if that doesnt work, flash a new recovery through adb and see if it boots up

So, hboot works, adb works...does fastboot work?
Either way, I'd flash a recovery and a rom....I was also thinking maybe refresh hboot, but, if you are getting to the bootloader I don't think it's corrupted, but, maybe the other parts are....
I'd start with recovery and a rom...if no luck there flash another hboot on top. I'm a big fan of the eng hboot.
Problem solved!
It was the battery, somehow. When I got home from work, I swapped out the chinese knockoff battery with the original stock battery, hit the power button, and it started right up. Swapped out for the same knockoff battery, and it won't start again. WTF?
Anyway, thanks everyone for your suggestions, I appreciate it!

RED brick?

Quick question guys, i was flashing the Linda voice on my vibrant, when all of a sudden it went to a blank red screen. did a battery pull but now its dead. it wont charge, wont go into download or recovery, odin doesnt work, nothing. Advice?
Press and hold power, then press Volume Up. You'll get red text. Plug your USB cable into your computer, then into your phone. Press and hold Volume up + Volume Down + Power until it reboots. Depress Power, it will reboot to Download mode. Flash away.

i tried this, along with trying a jig too. nothing appears whatsoever. just black screen.
button presses? u mean other than vol up down and power?
Connect usb+vup+vdown, then put battery in
Here try this...
Make sure you have ODIN OPEN with admin privileges!
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
You don't necessarily need the download mode image to be present. As long as you are getting the COM ID to light up yellow in ODIN, just flash back to stock like normal.
Tell me if this works for you!
N00B_IN_N33D THANK U! that worked, kinda. It got me into yellow download mode on my phone,(which is the 1st time screen has been back) but odin wont recognize it, so idk how 2 reflash to stock now without it

[Q] Power + Volume down = dead phone?

Dear XDA sages,
This morning, I turned on my Atrix. I was still a bit sleepy, and I must've held the volume rocker while pressing power.
For a very brief moment, I saw something that said "NVflash", then the screen turned black. I waited for a while, but nothing else happened. Ever since then, the screen has been blank, and it's seemingly just dead.
Now, pressing "power" won't shut it down, or boot it, or anything. I've plugged the phone in to charge, as that usually wakes it up, but not this time. The only other option I see now is to take the battery out, but I thought I'd ask around first lest I really brick my phone that way.
I should note that I was not attempting to flash or root or unlock anything, the phone is still on "stock" 2.2.2 FroYo, no modifications made.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

All you did was enter the boot menu by holding volume down while powering on. When NVflash showed up, if you keep pressing volume down you will go through the menu. You select an option by pressing volume up.

I didn't see anything of the boot menu, though, just a blank screen. Anyway, it's fixed now. Cheers!
