[Q] Update Or Not?!?! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys, my phone has: PDA: KG1 / PHONE: KG1 / CSC: KG2 (XEF)
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.3
KERNEL VERSION: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKG1-CLlabeltest_I9100XWKG1
my problem is when i run the software update of the phone it say that "NO UPDATE AVAILABLE" I try and with the kies software but tha same.
And know tha 2.3.4 came before a long time ago, and mine is at 2.3.3!!!
What do you suggest me to do?!?!?! to wait if my phone sometime will update?! or to do something else to get the official updates!!!
Thanks.

Well... if what you are talking about are the OTA updates on the phone... then its possible that it wont work because of your carrier, have you tried Kies?... and of course you could always use Odin

Yes i tried kies but it says that i have the latest update (2.3.3)!!!
sorry about the question what is odin?!?!?! ( i am new with android phones)

Well I don't know about what carrier or what country we are talking about. But here in Denmark we had 2.3.4 from KI4 undtil recently where they updated us to 2.3.5 KI8... But it sounds a little extreme for you to be stuck on 2.3.3

Don't update. Go out and play.

What if you don't get an update? I was a stubborn man with the same issue, but I broke when there was no update for my country officially, now if I could do that you also could, rather should update to 2.3.5. I hope you know the Odin method. And of course it's a worth upgrade.

Then install CM7. It's 2.3.7. I think you're big enough to take this decision yourself. If you're not, do a NAND backup, try a ROM and if you don't like it, you revert to your original one.
P.S.: those numbers don't worth much... you won't see a difference.

Firmwear

Hello, I just updated with kies, and re rooted, looking at this image dose it show im up to date? Is the "Build number" supposed to show XWKF3 or 7?
If you updated to KF3 then everything is ok. That's the firmware you have now, KF3.
So i am on the Latest Firmwear?, The one that supposedly fixed the battery problem

ok great. Thanks alot . But now say i wanted to try the leaked version . Is there a good tutorial for doing that?

You meant firmware, right?

It is kernel, not kernal.
It is Odin, not oden or eden.

Don't worry mate, 2.3.3 is the latest firmware in some countries so it just depends where you live. Not to mention that KIES never really works to be honest, it'd be much simpler to manually flash, good luck!

Ok, Strange :/. Well just use Odin, It won't void your warranty as long as you flash stock firmware. Check out Intratech's thread for the firmware. Like I said - If you ever get KIES working, it won't actually work (if that made sense).

[Q] official ics update for GT-I9100P?

While this is true, your typical I9100 ROM will probably NOT have NFC support built in. So if you flash it to your I9100P, chances are good you will not have NFC anymore. May or may not make a difference to you.

.... Probably? Only Samsung can officially answer that question.
EDIT: So if Samsung DOES officially release ICS through Kies (which by all indications, chances are quite good), you're still probably going to have to wait until they decide that your region is going to get it. This is one of the many reasons I've spurned using Kies. Kies is also somewhat unreliable for me. It only decided that my phone was connected to the computer about 1 out of 4 times. I much prefer using Odin and flashing the firmware myself.
Flashing an ICS Rom is the best thing that you can do to your phone. I know NFC probably is not going to work at first, but do you realy use it?

Rolling out in the UK this year so for example you can pay for small money purchases in shops by flashing your phone to a receiver. Bit like the oyster card on the London underground.

Can i flash it with for example "I9100XXLPB" 4.0.3 ??

But is it possible? or I will brick my phone?
Any help is appreciated.

Yes, it is possible. I9100 ROMs will indeed work on I9100P phones, but NFC won't work anymore... and it sounds like you already know this.
It's ALSO possible you can also brick your phone if you don't follow instructions.
ALL THAT SAID... If you are concerned about stability and NOT bricking your phone, then I suggest you do NOT flash ANY ICS based ROM, as it's not yet been officially released. That means any ICS based ROM is built off a leak, so stability is NOT guaranteed.
thank you for the explanation. I appreciate it.
by the way, even the radios(modems) are compatible/flashable?

Hi,
I also have the GT-i1900P Orange UK version.
Can you tell me which ROM did you flash? I need to debrand that Orange stuff since I'm on giffgaff. Would love to have some latest generic Samsung firmware but I'm a bit lost when it comes to ROMs. So far I've managed to remove simlock using Samsung Galaxy S unlocker and flash "CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip".
Thanks

You can flash any I9100 (NOTE: NOT an I9100G) firmware. Just know that you'll lose NFC if you do. But it looks like you already got this information in a different thread.

The first thing anybody should be doing after rooting and before flashing an ICS BETA ROM is making an EFS backup(download release.zip)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
and then making a Nandroid backup just incase you need to get back to your previous Firmware.Without these 2 things you could loose your phone cos your flashing a BETA ROM.
EDIT:A good kernel for ICS is LP6 as LPB seems to have more bugs in some ROMs.

Hello,
I have done exactly as you did. Just that I also backed up my EFS!! If you screw your EFS that you screw the phone so better safe than sorry.
Then I went on flashing I9100XXLPB with ODIN (there were three files).., the same way you flashed CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KI3-42-v4.2-CWM4.zip
So far so good! on 4.0.3 , performance is great
got 4027 on quadrant benchmark
absolutely no crashes yet..
thanks everyone for the help...
it seems easy now once you do it yourself..

[Q] French XEF Firmware outdated?

Hi everyone,
After hours of searching / googling i've decided to ask my question here as im stuck (Im also a noob).
I received my international version GT-i9300 (XEF) which i have found to be 'French' version. Samsung Zeis amd Sammobile says the firmware is up to date PDA:LFB/PHONE:LFB/CSC:LF1 (XEF)
But i'm having the 'crackling' noise when listening to music problem. When the screen is off, i get a random crackle / static noise, which, from what i read, this problem was addressed? (something to do with a power saving feature not supplying enough power to the DAC or something like that...). Its not the end of the world, but its pretty distracting when your trying to listen to music.
Is the French firmware outdated? Has this problem already been fixed? Should i flash it with my local firmware (Australia XSA) or should i just wait for the JB update, proported to be released in October?
Thanks for any help you can give!

But thats what im saying, Keis is telling me it IS updated!? Why is the french firmware (XEF) so old?
OK so im thinking i might just flash this phone to my local country firmware, being australia (XSA i assume), but i have no idea what im doing...I read the sticky instructions on using odin to flash, it seems straight forward, but i dont know which firmware to use.
Can i use the latest firware on sammobile, or do i have to flash in order? (there are 3 firmwares, ALE6, ALF2 and BLH2 on sammobile for Australia XSA).
Also if i flash the phone, will it recieve updates as normal? I saw some guy showing how to reset the flash counter and was wondering if i'm going to mess up future updates if i flash it manually...
Sorry for the noob questions, im totally lost...wishing i had of just bought one locally :crying:

You can flash any whole firmware (no OTA files).
If it is a normal release then you should get normal updates.
You will need to use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.
Buying locally would have got you updates but currently Aus roms are locking the dock icons, so be glad you don't have one of those.
Thanks for the info Kangburra!
I'm new to Andriod flashing, this sounds a bit intense (resetting the counter / triangle away), i think maybe ill just wait for a french update, however the hell long thats going to be... If it wasnt for that static noise with music, i would have given this phone 10 out of 10..
CS
Since you didn't buy it locally, you have no warranty anyway, so what exactly are you worried about resetting the flash counters for?
Whilst Odin may initially seem intimidating it is really quite simple. If you really want an aussie firmware flash the LH2 you mentioned (putting the file in the PDA section of odin). Though you might as well just flash LI5 (latest JB leak )
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
You don't need to Triangle away, and it is only another app to install, if you are happy to follow the ODIN instructions you will be fine.
I agree with above, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835931

Im mainly concerned about getting myself into a whole bunch of [email protected] I agree, ODIN looks easy enough. But rooting, triangle away, etc. I can see its going to get complicated and ill be stumbling in the dark trying to work it out...Dont want to stuff up a 500 dollar phone is what im worried about...
I'd assume this french firmware will get JB at some stage, i could probably just wait for it i guess..

So i downloaded that JB firmware and updated the phone and it exploded! Ha. Seriously, once you know what file to use, its quite easy.
Been listening to music last 10 mins approx and havent heard the original static / crackle problem i was having with the outdated french firmware. I did noticed though that it still says XEF in Kies though. Does that matter? Probably not...
EDIT: also, Kies is telling my device does not support upgrading via Kies....does this mean i have to manually upgrade my phone whenever there is an update...?
Thanks for your help everyone, i appreciate it!

You installed a rom which will only be released in a month approximately (you're on a leaked version) so of course Kies doesn't know what to do with you =)
Flashing through Odin is always the fasted method as you've seen, so I'd recommend sticking with it anyway.
(Actually Kies uses the same method to update your device, just dumbed down without any options)

Ah k so Keis might just start working once the firmware has been released. Only reason i keep going on about Keis is that i'm probably not going to notice updates if a program doesnt tell me. Im not around these parts much Would be nice to have Keis auto-update. Oh well, shouldnt have to worry for 6 months now anyway lol
