[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 - Bootloop stuck, no recovery mode but do have download mode! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there!
I have read through all the Boot loop posts before anyone asks!
My phone is stuck on the Samsung galaxy s2 boot up with the yellow triangle and the black "!" inside (Boot loop). This happened after flashing the wrong kernel on the device first time. Here is the thing, no matter how many times I try to flash the Kernel which I think is "KH1" (99% sure) in download mode with Odin and all the right drivers installed right from Kies, it still won't work! I've tried stock kernels, insecure kernels... you name it I've tried it!
The phone it's self will go into DOWNLOAD mode (which works fine) , but not RECOVERY MODE at all!
I have been trying for days to fix it, but nothing on here will work.
Please some one get back to me and try to help me fix this problem as I want to use my galaxy s2 again. :/
Thanks, Sam.

A link to what? Neither in this thread nor your original post in the correct thread have you said what happens when you flash with Odin (what errors, what messages, what options you're picking), what ROMs you've tried (I try to flash the Kernel which I think is "KH1" (99% sure) sounds rather flakey).
The full, detailed instructions are in the very first post, here in case you missed it.
If it doesn't work when you follow the instructions to the letter, explain in full what does happen and someone might be able to help you.

Any ROMs?
pulser_g2 said:
Alternatively, it is possible to flash VillainROM 1.1 if you are not comfortable in wiping via recovery, or if you cannot do so for any reason (corrupted kernel etc), as it wipes all users data when installing. Simply ignore steps 2 to 4, and flash VillainROM 1.1 via ODIN instead of the stock ROM.
Any questions about boot loops? Ask them here rather than making new threads.

Tried it, didn't work. :/ I don't think I am using the right stock Kernel though. It said JKH1, but not sure if it is the stock one! Please find a link with a stock one that will work on my phone as none will! Thank you.

Assuming you really do have an I9100, stock ROMs are here [ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KG, KH1/2/3/4, KI1/2/3/4/8, KJ1/2 Download and you should probably be looking for a WIPE ROM, such as XXKI3:

This original (unmodified) Wipe Package with new bootloader has: PDA: XXKI3| Modem/phone: XXKI3| CSC: OXAKI3

These packages have the new bootloader removed and repacked with the old ones so you can safely reset the binary counter with a Jig.

Please make sure you're checking and double checking what you're choosing in Odin, that you have no Kies programs running etc, in other words, read Intratech's posts fully before flashing again!

What colour, at what point, is it ever a different colour, is anything happening on the phone? Have you tried different USB ports?
Have you checked task manager for kies related processes? (ctrl+shift+esc, processes), are the drivers correctly installed, what operating system are you using and which architecture? Have you tried it on a different computer?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and I have tried on a different computer but the phone won't connect at all on that one! (Windows 7 Ultimate 84 bit.)

If you try to flash a multi file firmware and checking re-partition it still fails? I had this by using one file firmwares. Go to Intratech's thread and download a multi file firmware with new bootloaders to get comletely stock. This can not fail.
I have found out that the most stable multi file is xxki3.
While flashing this that way you should not encounter any failures with Odin.

hi guys, any help would really be appreciated.. i think i have the exact same problem as op. let me articulate it in a slightly more clear manner:
1. i flashed an insecure kernel in order to get root access. somewhere along this process somehow something got messed up.
2. the phone is stuck in a bootloop. this shouldnt be a problem! simply flash stock rom/stock modem, enter recovery mode and do a reset!
3. uh-oh. recovery mode crashes instantly, and the endless bootcycle comes back.
4. ive tried using cwm recovery, stock recovery, both of these have failed.
5. download mode works completely fine (using odin 1.85)
im running the AT&T version of galaxy s2 i777, but posting on those forums havent really gotten a solution, with build version UCKH7. I've tried to find a "wipe" package for this build but although i can find stock PDA and stock MODEM, i cannot find stock CSC. in desperation, i have also tried flashing PDA/MODEM/stock PIT at the same time, but this also has not worked. someone on the i777 forums has recommended trying to flash a new bootloader, but im a little wary with taking that step. noone has done it before.
any ideas?
TL;DR: my phone is stuck in a boot loop, but unlike others, recovery mode crashes instantly before i can even explore any options, and reenters bootloop into main android.

What exactly are you putting into each section in Odin, and which settings are checked? How long does the process take? Did you ever (either when you originally messed it up or while trying to fix it) choose any of the pit/repartition settings? What did you originally flash to cause the problem in the first place?
Is it possible to get screenshots with phone connected before flashing and one afterwards with all the options you're using shown?
This thread mentions something I asked earlier as the solution but you didn't respond to. Have you tried a different USB port and reinstalled the drivers (in Kies: tools -> install driver).
Kies also has a "firmware emergency recovery" though I've got no idea what that does, or if it's recommended to try.

It takes like 2 seconds on this one, other kernels which I flash take about 30 seconds then say PASS, but still boot loops. I haven't choose any of the pit/repartition settings. I just flashed the wrong kernel from trying to root the device for the first time, but this just put it into the boot loop.
I am just putting the "New_Bootloader_GT-I9100_OXA_I9100XXKI3_I9100XXKI3_I9100OXAKI3.tar" in into the PDA and then pressing start. I can't put a screen shot up here though as it won't let me.
I have tried different USB ports and reinstalled drivers. I also tried "firmware emergency recovery" but kies doesn't connect to my phone.

To OP, have you tried this? If all of your attempts thus far have involved a single file, and no repartition, if could be worth a try with one of the packages which has PDA/Phone/CSC as separate files (as on Intratech's description here: http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8290/odinxm.jpg). Failing that, you could try a ROM which comes with a PIT file to repartition the phone in case the partition table is somehow corrupt/damaged/incorrect, but you might want to consider that a last resort.

What's the status:
*unable to get in recovery modus
*able to get in download modus
*when I want to install another mod within odin it doesn't do anything, it completes installing in 1 second
it actually stops @ <ID:0/006> NAND Write Start!!

* installed CWM
* installed the cyanogen ROM
* installed font installer => rebooted => crashed (stuck on samsung screen)
* cleared data/cache in recovery modus
* tried to install stock ROM => stuck on samsung screen
* added pit file (read on the forum that it could help on bricked phones) , stock ROM and flashed with Odin
final result: no recovery modus, only download modus and unable to flash anything with Odin
If you can get to download mode you should certainly be able to flash with odin. That is download mode's sole purpose and afaik it is not affected by any rom installations.

the phone is recognized in Odin
I also think that the pit file messed it up (pit file was the one suggested for the SG3 => GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit)
when installing PDA file via Odin it stops @ <ID:0/006> NAND Write Start!!
on the phone
status balk on phone is completed but not rebooting (it actually does nothing in Odin I guess)
Why don`t you read BEFORE you flash anything instead of AFTERWARDS
BUT I GUESS ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU ARE NOT LIMITED BY ANY KNOWLEDGE.

Boot into odin and flash a complete stock rom with NO pit file. Follow the instructions provided on these forums for returning to stock.
Never ever flash a pit again.

In a german board this problem got solved by flashing with the right pit file (and a 3-part firmware).
They said, "mx.pit" or "GT-I9300_mx_20120329.pit" should work.
HERE you get the files.
Unfortunately the original poster was not very specified with reporting which he had flashed, but he said it flashed.
Another one pointed out, that you need a 3-part firmware when flashing with repartition. Is that the case? I don't know.
EDIT: It can be that the solution wasn't the correct pit file, but only the 3-part firmware. Maybe try to flash a 3-part firmware first without repartition.
Best Regards
Rob

This is pretty strange. You should be able to flash any of the international roms and have it work as they are interchangeable.
When you run the cyanogen zip is it throwing up an error or just flat resetting?
Tried redownloading the zip or using a different nightly?

Try with latest Odin. 1.85 i think. Also, before you try, unistall the phone from the PC and be sure that you have the correct drivers installed. Another suggestion is to try a different USB port.
If you phone boots, you can try Mobile Odin, its on the Play Store. No so sure about this one because i have never used it, but i guess you could give it a shot.
Start Odin with "Run as administrator" privileges.

You should not be bothering with ClockworkMod Recovery at all if you are flashing with Odin.
Recovery is built into the kernel.
Do all suggested above and also make sure you have a good usb cable. Cables do go bad.

What were you running before you decided to flash this? Stock Gingerbread? Stock ICS? Were you rooted before or are you now attempting to gain root? If rooted, were you running a custom GB rom or an ICS one? Answers to these will help determine how best you can be helped.

It seems you need to Odin flash a rom with a kernel that includes CWM recovery.
You are new here so the first place to go are the stickies like here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301682
Work from there and READ, READ, READ!!! Learn what you need because there is a huge amount of "old timers" here that will not spoon feed you any information.
It has been so long since I had to root my phone from stock and load a kernel with CWM recovery. I will try my best to help but will be pretty busy tonight. There may be additional knowledgeable people helping you in the meantime.
Good luck!!
Edit: Firmware corrupted may be an incomplete download. Try downloading the file again. BTW: Don't bother trying to Odin flash CWM recovery....it is built into custom kernels.

Yes you can download the GAPPS to your phone and flash in CWM recovery.

You should be able to pull down the status bar after connecting your phone to the compute and it'll give you the option to use different storage modes to transfer.

[Q] [HELP] International S3 has a problem beyond my knowledge.

Greetings.
I know this forum can get quite annoyed with posts being repeated and the same question being asked many times over.
I would just like to say that I have searched this forum for the problem I have, however either the posts are beyond my knowledge or not directly related to my issues. If I have missed something please let me know.
First things first. My phone.
I have an International Samsung Galaxy S3
It is running Stock JellyBean 4.1.1 (O2 UK)
It has been rooted with Odin. (I only rooted because I wanted to use Titanium Backup). It has been rooted successfully for about 3 weeks.
I wish I could give the exact firmware and other figures but I can't access them on my phone.
The Problem
Today whilst working at my desk I decide to check my phone but when I look at it there is a message being displayed that states "Encryption Failed". There is some text saying that I need to factory reset my phone and then, below that is a reset button. I press the reset button, the phone reboots to exactly the same screen. I press it again... And again... And again.
Now it boots into CWM-based recovery. Figuring I don't want to screw this phone up further without finding out what the problem is, i restart the phone again. Now the phone just boots into the Samsung logo and then reboots and so the cycle continues.
I have no idea how this happened, it was so random and unexpected.
What should I do?
The good points
I can still get into CWM-Recovery
From reading previous posts I have downloaded Samsung toolkit but its well beyond my capabilities.
The bad points
I haven't a clue what to do
Having only just switched to android and learnt the basics about rooting, I really need some assistance with this problem.
Please, please, if there is anyone on XDA who can help point me in the right direction I would forever be grateful.

Thank you. I will look into how to do that. I've only ever rooted, never flashed any kind of ROM. I apologise for my noobness.
The one good thing about this is that I certainly will learn a lot more about my phone in a short space of time.
I will update when I have tried this.
Also will the 'backup and restore' or 'reboot recovery' in CWM be of any use?
Thanks again.

If you made a backup when you rooted with cwm recovery, then I would try to restore it 1st.

Unfortunately I didn't make a backup in CWM, so I cannot restore (I'll be sure too next time though).
Thanks for your suggestion.
Just to update.
Now the phone just gets stuck on the Samsung glowing screen and doesn't keep restarting. I still have access to CWM.
I'm still searching for the Official Jelly Bean ROM to download for my phone.

I have now opened Odin3 v1.85.
Interesting to note that the top black bar says 'Epic 4G'. I don't know if that is of any significance.
I've found the ROM which i relevant to my phone, i think (I9300XXDLIB)
Just to ask, I'm not needing to download any firmware? Different firmware versions were the major results i found when searching. I wouldn't be able to tell you what firmware I'm on, other than to say its Stock o2 UK firmware, whatever that maybe.
Thanks again for the replies.

I just used odin to try and install the new ROM but it failed.

Alright alright, let's start with some basic stuff here.
1)- Do you have a micro sd card in there? And a card reader to read/write content to it from your PC? (We can use this to flash another ROM directly from CWM).
2)- Did you enter download mode when attempting to flash with ODIN? (Powerdown + Home + Power button)?
Everyone should follow the layout of the first post when asking for help, makes it way easier for people to understand and help.

Hi,
1) Yes I have a micro SD card, which I can use to place files on from my PC.
2) Yes, I entered download mode when flashing to from Odin (The screen with the warning about installing custom software). I clicked ok, and then Odin detected my phone.
I'm currently downloading PDA:I9300XXDLIH & CSC:I9300O2UDLI3 as I'm aware the last ROM could have been the wrong one.
Any assistance would greatly appreciated.

If ODIN doesn't work after all, download Android Revolution or any other stock based ROM, place it in your external SD card, and flash it from CWM, Factory reset and that should work.

NAND Write Start stalls

First I read all the stickies and tried every installation to go back to stock but Odin just freezes up. Also tried different USB ports and and computers and same results. I can only go into download mode.
You may need to repartition. Not knowing the history of how your phone got to where it is now, I can't be sure. Can you give me a complete rundown of your issue?

How would I go about repartitioning the phone? I full wipe and flashed the new Shostock3 and it was doing fine. The next day when I woke up my phone had the sleep of death. The Galaxy S2 logo was stuck and I tried to get into recovery and it only showed half of the screen and was frozen. Now the screen says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
Go to the Download Repository. The link is in my sig.
First, try flashing full stock Gingerbread. Use the download under the heading I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries. This is the full distribution which contains the bootloaders. It doesn't matter whether you use the one-click downloader, or the tar.md5 file with Odin stand alone. If this flash completes, then you're recovered. Follow the guides to root and install a custom Gingerbread kernel, then flash back to SHOstock3 or whatever firmware you want.
If this flash does not complete, then download the I777 UCKH7 PIT and use that in Odin stand alone with the above tar.md5 file. Insert the tar in the PDA slot, the pit in the PIT slot, and check repartition, then flash.

Yes, I was hoping that the problem is not hardware, but it was a thought from the beginning, given the sequence of failure. Is the phone by chance still under warranty?
Let's don't give up yet, though.
Things to try, then try to flash the full firmware in between.
1. Use Odin stand alone to flash just the I777 secondary bootloader.
2. Use Odin stand alone to flash just the param.lfs.
Try the instructions in this post.

You can already get into download mode. I don't believe there is any difference in the download mode produced by a jig. A jig is really helpful if the wrong secondary bootloader was flashed by accident (or ignorance), and you can't get the phone into download mode any ohter way.

[Q] I9100G at least soft bricked

Hi everyone.
It's now been a few days that my I9100G is down. I've tried severals things found online : using a .pit file alone then flashing the firmware alone, .pit and firmware at the same time, using severals differents firware package, changing my cable, changing the USB port used, yes kies is closed, yes I've reinstalled the drivers.
I didn't tried with a x86 computer yet but I will this afternoon.
The symptoms
- Boot stuck on the logo.
- Recovery mode unavailable (I press the three buttons, I release them when the logo appear nad nothing more happend).
- Download more available.
What happends:
One day my phone suddently restart on his own. It happends to me. but when it start it was asking me to enter a password to decrypt it... but I don't remember having set this thing (and it's the first time it ever ask me that, even after a lot of reboots).
So, since I'm rooted and with CWM I boot into recovery and try a wipe. But since I don't want to lose everything I first try just a cache wipe. Then the problems started :
- after a first reboot, and since the wipe didn't changed anything, I tried to enter again in the recovery, but I get an error message (I don't remember which, I think it was something like an impossibility to mount some storage) and I get kicked off the recovery mode.
- I try to flash again a version of CWM for the I9100G.
- I can't enter at all in recovery mode anymore
- I try a full reinstalation using a all-in-one package of the firmware. It failed a different places:
- I9100GXXLSR_I9100GXXLSP_I9100GXEFLSR_HOME.tar.md5 usually fail during factoryfs.img
- I9100GXXKL5_I9100GXEFKL3_I9100GXXKL4_HOME.tar.md5 usually fail during modem.img
I start to run out of solutions and I'm in a great need of help now, I've tried all I could on my own.

PS : I don't know if it's normal but I've flashed a couple time before and it never was awefuly long, here each tried take at least 1h-1h30. I would like to know if that's normal ^^
What exactly do you mean by that ?
Edit - Two things come to mind given the stages the flashes have been failing at; bad downloads & something PC side - temporary break in connection b/w phone & PC but not long enough for the PC OS to register, or dodgy USB ports. But that may/may not be ruled out depending on your answer to the above question.

Bad downloads : maybe, but that would mean that the 3 or 4 differents downloads I did (because I thought of that possibility and I've tried to re-download the roms) all were corrupted at some point ^^'
Connection problem : maybe too, but (yeah again a but) I don't touch my computer at all during the process expeciallt to avoid the connexion to be broke.
PS : all my .tar.md5 archives gives me the "error" "There is no correct records at the end of archive" when I check them with 7-zip
Ahhh OK. Win7 x64 wouldn't normally be an issue. Trying a 32 bit OS more than likely won't give you any different result on the same machine. Given everything you've already tried, you need to try a different machine. And if it were me, I'd try more than one, because the alternative is giving up & paying someone to fix it.
The error you get with 7Zip is normal for stock roms & doesn't affect anything, but very good idea to try checking the integrity of the download though. Try checking the zip before you unzip the tar.md5. If it says files are missing/broken, there's your problem. If not, go with trying on another machine. Also, search for Hopper8's "Odin troubleshooting' thread. As thorough as you've been to this point (and you have been very thorough), there might be something relatively minor mentioned in his thread that you may not have tried.

Yeah, I ment to use another computer ^^ I'm trying right now. Can you confirm me that a flashing can take one hour or more? (I'm not used to that amount of time)
And yeah, I don't want to give up and pay someone to do something I could do. I'm not a newbie in IT stuff, (even if I don't really know the architecture of an android phone and I don't know the use of the differents files in a rom).
7zip tell me that everything is ok about the downloaded .zip.
Thanks for the tip, I'm going to read that thread
No, a stock rom flash on the S2 should only take a couple of minutes tops. Normally in these situations, as long as you have download mode you can recover it, unless the NAND is messed up, then it's a JTAG (not always possible though) or in many cases a motherboard replacement. But forget that for now & only worry about that when you reach the end of the line so far as stuff you can try goes.
OK. So we can rule out bad download plus pretty much all the other stuff you've tried so far. Try on another machine & read his thread to make doubly sure there's not something really small/obvious we're both missing here.
ok, The ROM I've took come from sammobile so I guess it shouldn't take that amound of time.
That's factoryfs.img that take the most of the time ^^
I just realized that I forgot to launch Odin as administrator with windows 7 (my current try is on a x86 windows XP). But my previous (successfull ) flashes were like that too ^^'
I will continue to try on that other computer, but that will take some time to try all ports (since there is roughly 1h-1h30 to try to flash + the time for a full recharge of the battery <.<)
After having read a couple of threads here I realized that I took a .pit file from somewhere but haven't followed the step there :
[Fix] [Guide] [For Noobs] Recover from Corrupted Memory[USE EXTREME CAUTION]
But since I still not know how is organized an android phone I don't know if I've just used a generic thing that have just done nothing or if I could have messed up something. The file have this name : omap4_all_20110627_emmc.pit
I'm sorry for the double post : this is an update
The first try failed during factoryfs.img. I'm currently charging the phone for a next try.
So far I've tried
- I9100GXXLB1_I9100GATOKL1_ATO
- I9100GXXLSR_I9100GXEFLSR_XEF
- I9100GXXKL5_I9100GXEFKL3_XEF
Would anyone have any idea of which other rom I could try?
Shouldn't make any difference which rom you use, as long as it's an I9100G rom. Try every stock rom you're physically able to download; Sometimes with these situations you could try 10 flashes and they all fail, yet for whatever reason the 11th works. If I had a dollar for every occasion I've seen that happen on here over the past ~2 yrs, I'd have a fair bit of money - it's not super common, but it's not unheard of either.
So keep at it, perseverance might just recover it when trying every single thing you/everyone else on here can think of won't.
Okay, I'll keep going then ^^ may a custom rom work better?
I still don't understand why it take so much time ^^'
My guess is....at this point, you probably don't have root access, so a custom rom probably won't flash (can you even get into recovery mode?)
Read hopper8s guide and look for the link to the 3 part or test firmware. Most (if not all) single file firmwares simply overwrite what is already installed.....the test firmware will wipe the previous install and allow you to clean flash the firmware.....it *might* work where other firmwares haven't.......

I'm a little lost into the amount of rom available. Should I only try official roms? could I try other ones, if yes, which ones?
The worst part is that I don't remember which version was running on my phone. I was rooted, up to date I think, but that's all I remember, and I always see "only use this rom with a x.x.x rom" so <.<
also, after having tried so much time to reinstall it, does the indication "only use this rom with a x.x.x rom" still apply?
It doesn't matter which stock firmware you flash/whether it's specifically for your carrier or not. The aim is to get the phone working normally, so any stock I9100G firmware will do.
The suggestion to try a 3 part firmware is a good one, but I honestly don't know if there is such a thing for the I9100G as there is for the I9100.
You really need to start trying with a different PC and more than one if you can, because the alternative involves paying a Samsung service centre a not insignificant sum of money to fix your phone.
Done some google searching and it seems that there is no test firmware for your phone.....I WOULDN'T recommend using the one linked to in hopper8s thread.....the hardware in the phones (specifically the chipsets) are different......you'd probably kill your phone if you used it.
Below is a link to the latest firmware for your phone...

Thanks for all your answers.
I will then continue to try severals computers and severals roms.
I still wonder one thing :
would it be possible to install all the different parts separately? it always fail at the same step, is it possible to install the different parte one after the other? that would avoid me to have to wait 2h between two tries ^^
Also I wonder : what is the use of the .dll file I always find in the .zip ?
Edit : I just noticed something; in the latest version of Odin there is a option called "NAND erase all". would it be a good alternative to the 3-part test firmware?
I hate to do that but : little up about my last questions ^^'

Here is a bit of log from my last try with Odin :
thanks for reading
PS : I don't know if it's normal but I've flashed a couple time before and it never was awefuly long, here each tried take at least 1h-1h30. I would like to know if that's normal ^^

No, thats definitely not normal, I have an i9100 and it has never taken longer than a few mins to flash via odin. I did make the mistake once of trying to flash my wifes i9100 which i assumed was an i9100g because it was white, might be not applicable to you, but it may be worth checking you have an i9100g not an i9100 - just look under your battery!
Good luck.

Thanks ^^ but I am completly absolutely sure I have a i9100G ^^ because I already had problems before to find a way to root my phone ^^ and it say I9100G on the phone ;p I even tried to change it for a normal i9100 at the store I bought it but they told me they only had that version^^
Edit / news: I've tried to flash some part separately (from here :
[COLLECTIONS][MIRROR] Official Firmwares, Kernels, Modems, Bootloaders ). the bootloader don't fail, the kernel don't fail but the modem always fail while writing (now writing [...] -> blank line -> Received response from LOKE -> fail)
I don't know what to do now <.<
New question : have anyone any solution to allow me to have at least access to the recovery? is there any way to flash only the recovery? I made a lot of searches but couldn't find anything :/
If you can flash a custom kernel, you'll get (usually) CWM recovery.......then at that point you can do the full range of wipes and in theory flash custom roms.....
